President Shimon Peres met with the heads of the French Jewish community and a delegation of Imams

Until these imams address Islamic antisemitism and the Islamic texts and teachings that call for the slaughter of the Jews, this is all for show. This means nothing. Jews are fleeing Europe in droves. It is not safe to walk in many major European cities with any identifying Jewish symbols. Islamic anti-semitism poses the gravest existential threat to Jews all over the world.

I am glad that finally the government of Israel is acknowledging that the genocidal impetus is Islamic -- hence the meeting with the delegation of Imams -- but no one is talking about 800lb jihadi in the room: Islamic antisemitism. It's in the quran. And the fact that this is not being discussed invariably provides cover, because the silence is  sanction.

One of the imams said, "We teach the believers that human life is holier than the holy sites! Holier than Mecca, the Vatican or Jerusalem." Uh, he must be reading the Talmud.

More ishcabbibble. Of course the Imams wanted to know when "the Palestinians could be re-started." They just can't help themselves. This was a memorial for dead Jewish children at the hands of a jihadist, and it always comes back to the Jewish homeland and Islamic imperialism.

When President Peres said to the Imams, "Whoever was responsible for the murder of French citizens and Jewish children in Toulouse showed the ugly face of terror..." It's not the who, it's the what. And no one is touching that, and that is the problem.

President Shimon Peres, this morning (Sunday, 10 March 2013), in France, conducted a special meeting with the heads of the Jewish community of France and with a delegation of Imams including the heads of the Egyptian, African, Moroccan and Senegalese communities and heads of central mosques. The meeting took place the day before memorial events in France to mark one year since the terrorist attacks in Toulouse http://www.mfa.gov.il

During the meeting with the Imams, President Peres was pleased by their support for Israel, their moderate approach and tolerance towards other faith communities and their vocal, steadfast opposition to terror in all its forms. At the start of the meeting Imam Chalghoumi talked about the memorial events one year after the terrorist attacks in France (March 11th and March 15th) and said, "Tomorrow, March 11th, is a terrible day of mourning for us, a day on which terror struck from which we all suffered. I wanted to tell you, Mr. President, that we Muslims are victims like the Jews, of the same extremist who went on a journey of murder, who took the lives of children. We are here to say to our brothers the Jews and the French: We are all threatened by terror, hurt by terror and we all call with optimism for peace at the end of this terrible year. We teach the believers that human life is holier than the holy sites! Holier than Mecca, the Vatican or Jerusalem"

President Peres thanked the Imam for his words and expressed his appreciation, "Whoever was responsible for the murder of French citizens and Jewish children in Toulouse showed the ugly face of terror, and your words show the way of peace. You are leaders of an Islam which seeks peace, as we do. I am very grateful for your words, and I thank you for coming. I see in you brothers in this path, dialogue between us is important and valuable and that is why this meeting between us is so important. We will work together, for all the peoples of the world, for Israeli's and Palestinians, for peace in the world."

Pair held on suspicion of links to Mohamed Merah, who killed three Jewish children, a rabbi and three paratroopers

A man and a woman have been arrested in southern France on suspicion of links to an Islamic militant who killed Jewish schoolchildren and French paratroopers this year, the Paris prosecutor's office said on Tuesday.

The arrests, the first in the case since March, may throw new light on suspicions that Mohamed Merah did not act alone in the attacks, which left seven dead. Merah was later killed in a shootout with police.

One of Merah's brothers, Abdelkader, is already in custody on preliminary charges of complicity in the killings. Their oldest brother is among those who have suggested a third man may have played a role.

The man arrested on Tuesday was picked up in the city of Albi in southern France, and the woman – his ex-girlfriend – was arrested in Toulouse, the prosecutor's office said. It released no other details.

An official with the prosecutor's office, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the man was the key suspect.

The Sipa news agency said the man was suspected of helping obtain the scooter used in the attacks.

Merah told police during a standoff before his death that he carried out the killings of three paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi over a nine-day period in March.

Merah had travelled to Pakistan and Afghanistan and was under loose surveillance by French security services, which have since acknowledged lapses and promised to tighten up procedures.

While authorities initially described him as a "lone-wolf" terrorist, lawyers for victims' families were sceptical.

"We know that he didn't kill alone," lawyer Patrick Klugman, who represents some victims' families, said on LCI television. "We want everyone who helped him, who hid him … brought before justice."

Samia Maktouf, lawyer for the father of one of the paratroopers, told Sipa that she was expecting more arrests of suspected accomplices "in France and abroad".

France's Le Monde newspaper says it has seen confidential documents of the police investigation into Toulouse gunman Mohamed Merah that suggest he was not working alone.

The papers showed he had made more than 1,800 calls to over 180 contacts in 20 different countries, Le Monde said.

Merah had also made several trips to the Middle East and Afghanistan.

Merah, 24, killed three soldiers and four Jewish people in March before being shot dead by police.

Le Monde's article cites confidential papers from the DCRI intelligence agency.

The BBC's Christian Fraser in Paris says the papers obtained by Le Monde cast light on a young man who was much more than an angry petty criminal that had "radicalised himself" - as suggested by the DCRI earlier in the investigation.

Between September 2010 and February 2011 the former garage mechanic made hundreds of calls to countries including Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Kazhakstan, Saudi Arabia, Bhutan and the UK.

Merah had become known to the intelligence services as early as 2009, after they had been following his sister, Souad, and his brother, Abdelkhadar, who are now both in police custody.

The papers show that intelligence services recorded a trip to a Salafist, or ultraconservative Sunni Islamist, school of obedience in Egypt.

In February 2011, German officials alerted French colleagues that Merah had travelled from Cairo, via Frankfurt, to Toulouse.

It was only in March 2011, after a long trip to Afghanistan, that Merah was placed under tighter surveillance.

One official quoted in the papers said Merah changed SIM cards, registered under his mother's name, frequently, and suggested the family was trying to protect him.

Merah, who himself claimed to have al-Qaeda affiliation, was also reported to have contacted one known Salafist in Toulouse and two others who recently left for Mauritania.

Merah was shot dead on 22 March after a huge manhunt culminated in a 32-hour stand-off with police at an apartment in Toulouse.

The Jewish victims included three children murdered at a school.

Merah's rampage, from 11 to 19 March, terrorised the region.

Transcripts of his jihad have been published in the media, much to the consternation of pundits and politicians. The transcripts should be published -- hiding the truth about Islamic doctrine disarms the populace.

Today the BBC ran select quotes from Merah's muslim rant. It's pretty clear that the notoriously anti-Jewish, pro-jihad BBC chose only the parts it thought justified the acts of this monster.

The French paper Liberation has printed an 173-page long transcript of conversations between the killer Mohamed Merah and police negotiators.

In extracts, Merah, who was shot dead after killing seven people, describes how the murders "soothed his heart".

The move has prompted an inquiry into breach of confidentiality of an investigation, AFP reports. The authorities are already investigating after a TV channel aired extracts from the tapes a week ago.

Merah, 23, killed three soldiers and four Jews, including three children, in several attacks in March.

'I felt better'

The transcript details Merah's ramblings with police as he was holed up in his home in Toulouse, in south-western France, shortly before his death. In it, the Islamist killer seeks to explains his attacks as revenge for conflict in Muslim lands.

"I had a precise goal in my choice of victims. I would never have killed children if you hadn't killed our children," he says.

"I kill soldiers in France because in Afghanistan, they are killing my brothers. I kill Jews because these same Jews are killing innocent people in Palestine."

"If I had killed civilians, the French people would have said, 'he's a just a crazy terrorist from al-Qaeda."

Merah told police his first murder was "difficult" but later killings "soothed him".

He added: "And because my heart was soothed, I wanted to do it again, and each time I struck again, I felt better and better."

The paper has reportedly justified its publication in the name of legitimate criticism of the police.

Earlier this month, relatives of Merah's victims said they were "outraged" after TF1 broadcast parts of the conversation, and their lawyers said they would seek an injunction to block further broadcasts.

Police also launched an inquiry to find out how the channel came to obtain the recordings.

France's Interior Minister Manuel Valls also condemned the decision, saying it showed a lack of respect to relatives of the victims.

He said he regretted that they were run at a time when court proceedings relating to the killings were still ongoing.

France Cabinet Approves Anti-Jihad measures

PARIS (AP) — France's conservative government unveiled new counterterrorism measures on Wednesday to punish those who visit extremist websites or travel to weapons-training camps abroad, in the wake of killings by an suspected Islamic extremist in southern France last month.

Sarkozy's Cabinet gave its go-ahead to measures that would make it illegal to travel abroad to "indoctrination and weapons-training camps for terrorist ends" or to regularly visit websites that incite or praise deadly terrorism.

Sarkozy's government insists the measures are needed to fight the relatively new phenomenon of "lone wolf" terrorism by extremists who self-radicalize online via jihadist Web sites, and are hard for authorities to track.

Millions of jihadists are not "lone wolves"; they are part of the global Muslim army whose stated goal is to eliminate and destroy the West.

Another proposal would make it possible to use anti-terror laws to prosecute those seeking to recruit terrorists, even if their recruiting efforts fail.

The measures come amid the hyper-charged political atmosphere ahead of France's presidential and legislative elections in the coming weeks. Even the proposal's proponents admit they may not be taken up before elections reshape the National Assembly in June.

The Socialists — who could see gains in the elections — oppose the measure, arguing that France just needs to apply its counterterrorism laws better.

"We would have liked to have passed these measures before the presidential election," said government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse of the two-round election on April 22 and May 6.

PARIS — The attacks in France committed by Mohammed Merah, a French-born Muslim whose parents migrated from Algeria, have millions of Muslims living in the West worried about the potential consequences. In particular, women worry that they will become the focus of campaign politics.

Many friends who wear the hijab and live in Europe reported getting angry looks after the attacks, said Malika, 29, a German of Moroccan background who works in a bank and declined to have her last name published.

Angry looks! Horror of horrors! The other day I was at a Hertz counter and a Muslim clerk gave me a dirty look -- I don't think he recognized me, but perhaps just took me for a Jew -- and ostentatiously bypassed me for the person behind me in line. Will the New York Times write about me?

Mr. Merah, 23, had traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan and claimed affiliation with Al Qaeda. He killed seven people, three of them children.

“It is terrible what he has done, and there is nothing in Islam that justifies the killing of innocents, especially children,” said Naima, 26, who also spoke on the condition that her full identity be withheld.

The problem is that Muslim hardliners consider no non-Muslim to be innocent. And the Qur'an tells us that "the unbelievers among the People of the Book" -- that is, the Jews and Christians who reject Muhammad and Islam -- are not human beings worthy of respect although they differ from Muslims in conscience, but "the worst of creatures" (Qur'an 98:6).

Naima and other Muslims in France would no doubt strongly reject such a view, but we cannot know that for sure, since they do not address it, and no mainstream media journalist ever asks them to do so.

“But will we Muslims, and especially Muslim women, have to pay the price now?”

No. The rabbi and the children Merah murdered at the Jewish school in the name of Islam and jihad already paid the price.

Naima cited the debate in France over where Mr. Merah was to be buried — in the end, Algeria refused his body, and he was buried in Toulouse — as evidence of double standards about who is embraced as French and who remains firmly Muslim.

“When someone is like Zidane, a great sportsman, they say he’s French, and when one like Merah, who is a child of this society, runs nuts and kills people, they say he’s not one of us,” she said.

You mean you want to claim him?

Naima’s parents, like Mr. Merha’s [sic], came from Algeria. She grew up in the suburbs of Paris.

Naima and many other Muslims in Europe wonder whether they are caught in a vicious cycle in which increasing xenophobia helps radicalize a generation of Muslims born in France, and they ask whether attacks like Mr. Merah’s will further increase Islamophobia.

Notice that it is "xenophobia" that helps "radicalize" young Muslims. Texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah exhorting believers to wage war against unbelievers? No, those have nothing to do with this "radicalization," nothing whatsoever. It is entirely the fault of the West, despite the fact that Muslim leaders in Europe have repeatedly warned Muslims there not to assimilate, but to form ethnic/religious enclaves. The Muslim leader Dyab Abou Jahjah in Belgium said a few years back that "assimilation is cultural rape."

Mahvish Rukhsana Khan, an American lawyer living in Los Angeles and the author of the book “My Guantánamo Diary,” asserted that “French politics have generated anti-Islamic sentiment,” but that clearly Mr. Merah “needed his head checked.”

Yet again, there is no hint whatsoever that any Muslims could have done anything to be responsible for any "anti-Islamic sentiment," if any actually exists.

“Nothing justifies his heinous attacks,” she said.

Mr. Merah also stated that France had become increasingly anti-Muslim, citing the ban of the niqab, the veil over women’s faces....

“Between having entire families massacred in Kandahar by a sociopath U.S. soldier, drones wiping out entire families or bombs dropping on weddings,” Mrs. Khan said, “there are multiple sources to anger toward Western countries.”

Yes, and no reasons at all for what Mrs. Khan would term "Islamophobia." Just never mind all those jihad terror attacks committed in the name of Islam.

Mrs. [Yvonne] Ridley said: “Western governments must start to take responsibility for their actions abroad, and these actions are not usually with the consent or in the agreement of their own citizens who elected them.”

Yes, yes, Western governments must start to take responsibility. But do Muslims need to start taking responsibility for how jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to incite to violence? Of course not!

Devout French Muslims Vow to Avenge JIhadi Merah's death, Muslim Cleric: Calls Sarkozy 'Despicable' Over Toulouse Shooter Merah's Burial In France, 'Pig' and 'Jew,' Calls Jews 'Enemies of Allah,' and Justifies Merah's Actions

France's interior minister says that some Muslim groups in France want to avenge the death of a jihadist who mowed down Jewish children at a Jewish day school and murdered French soldiers (who were Muslim) for fighting for the infidel.

Claude Gueant, speaking on French radio Europe 1 Friday, said that authorities have observed increased "desire" and "enthusiasm" among such groups to avenge the death of Mohamed Merah, a Frenchman of Algerian descent, who died in a standoff with police last month. (AP)

This is beyond the pale, but Islamic Jew-hatred is a religious mandate. This rhetoric is mirrored all over the world -- from islamic revolutions in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Somalia, etc.

Islamic supremacist  groups in the US, i.e. CAIR, and pro-Khomeinist Reza Aslan share, espouse, and advance the very same teachings and motivations that the Jew-killing jihadi, Muhamad Merah had. Close your eyes and CAIR, Aslan and Merah are interchangeable.

Hamas-linked CAIR, one of the top five Threats to Freedom on AFDI's Threats to Freedom Index, has frequently echoed the same rhetoric about Israel and the Palestinians that Mohamed Merah used as justifications for his murders of Jewish children and a rabbi in Toulouse. Mousa Marzook, a senior member of Hamas, was a founder of the Islamic Association for Palestine, CAIR's parent group. CAIR's cofounder Nihad Awad has declared his support for Hamas, and CAIR frequently echoes Hamas propaganda regarding alleged Israeli atrocities. CAIR and Mohamed Merah share the same ideological perspective on Israel -- one which, Merah proved, can easily lead to the murder of innocents.

What is being done to denounce, expunge the Islamic Jew hatred commanded in the quran and/or the  Jew hatred and blood libels manufactured in Islamic media that act to incite to violence and genocide?

Suspected Islamist militants arrested in France were plotting to kidnap a Jewish judge, sources close to the investigation told French media. Of the 19 people arrested across the country on Friday, 16 remain in custody and the first court hearings are due to be held shortly.

France expelled two foreign-born radical Islamists on Monday.

An Islamist gunman, Mohamed Merah, killed seven people in south-western France last month before being shot. A lawyer for his Algerian father says she has evidence his son pleaded his innocence in talks with police besieging his flat in Toulouse.

A French police source suggested the allegation did not square with the facts of the siege.

Right to appeal

Sources close to the investigation told French media that some of the suspects seized in Friday's dawn raids had been planning to kidnap Jewish magistrate Albert Levy in the eastern city of Lyon.

Mr Levy and his family are now under police protection.

The head of France's Central Directorate for Domestic Intelligence (DCRI), Bernard Squarcini, said earlier that the suspects were French nationals involved in "collective war-like training, linked to a violent, religious indoctrination".

Some belonged to a banned extremist group, Forsane Alizza, and had been involved in paintball gun games, he added.

Police also seized a number of weapons including four Kalashnikov rifles, eight other rifles and "seven or eight" handguns, along with tear gas canisters and a taser, Mr Squarcini said.

French anti-terrorism legislation allows for suspects to be held for four days, and some of the suspects may be charged on Tuesday.

On Monday, the French interior ministry announced two men had been expelled on grounds of state security and public safety, and had returned to their countries of origin.

One of these, Malian imam Almany Baradji, had reportedly preached anti-Semitism and advocated the full face veil for women - which is illegal in France.

But even worse, his cold-blooded murders are winning him sympathy from Muslims and leftist useful idiots around the world.

Will the Muslim community in France, famous for its rampages and car burnings, decry Mohamed Merah’s murderous deeds and Islamic Jew-hatred in general? Don’t bet on it. Millions of Muslims worldwide share Mohamed Merah’s genocidal inclinations. The hatred of Israel is commanded in Islam. The very existence of Israel is offensive to practicing Muslims. That should be no surprise, since the Quran, which calls the Jews the worst enemies of the Muslims (5:82), commands that Muslims wage war against them (9:29). A hadith adds that Muhammad said: “The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say, ‘O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him’” (Bukhari 4.52.177).

Mohamed Merah was no lone jihadist. There is an army of millions. Monstrous. Even the “peaceful” people on the “humanitarian” flotilla that confronted the IDF in summer 2010 was chanting a genocidal war cry invoking Muhammad’s massacre of Jews at the Khybar oasis in Arabia: “Khybar, Khybar, O Jews, the army of Muhammad shall return.”

So it was no surprise when Agence France-Presse reported Friday: “Facebook on Thursday removed a page that paid homage to the young Frenchman who died in a shootout with police after killing seven people, officials said.” “Frenchman”? He was a Muslim who would almost certainly have denied being French at all. “The page,” AFP stated, “which bore a picture of the self-proclaimed al-Qaida militant and was titled ‘Homage to Mohamed Merah,’ was ‘liked’ by more than 1,800 people before it was removed just hours after it appeared, they said. Many visitors left comments that were hostile to the police or favorable to Islamic extremism.”

More proof that Merah was no “lone gunman,” but a representative of the hopes and desires of far more Muslims than the mainstream media are willing to admit, came when scores of young Muslims gathered in Toulouse to honor Merah’s memory. (If that doesn’t sound like much, remember that a recent demonstration of “moderate Muslims” drew only 36, despite receiving enthusiastic international publicity.)

At the pro-Merah demonstration, a woman wearing a burqa said: “What we ask today is that we stop demonizing Mohamed, that’s it, he died.” She paid lip service to Merah’s victims: “We share the pain and suffering of the families because it is the same pain for us here.” But then she excused his murders: “I think what influenced him is what he had seen in his many travels. He could not manage all that. He was still a teenager in his head, despite his 23 years.”

Most teenagers, even those who are just teenagers in their heads, don’t massacre Jews while screaming “Allahu akbar.” This is jihad. This is Islamic Jew-hatred, prescribed and commanded by the Quran. This demonstration reveals the enemy within our own borders and shores. Imagine marching for this cold-blooded killer (in a cloth coffin, aka a burqa, no less). This is the most anti-human ideology on the face of the earth, and it is winning over entire nations and regions across the world.

Merah is winning over non-Muslim anti-Semites as well. The Daily Mail reported that “in disturbing scenes at Gustave Flaubert High School in Rouen, Normandy, Lorraine Collin, 56, described the 23-year-old who murdered seven including three children as himself being the ‘victim of an unhappy childhood.’”

French police discovered an Islamist network, four months ago in Nice, which recruited 30 Muslim youth to fight coalition forces in Afghanistan, according to a Tuesday-morning report by Kol Yisrael government radio.

Arrested in the case was Omar Diabi, a Muslim preacher born in Senegal, who was a member of an organization that was banned at the beginning of the month. Mohammad Merah, who murdered seven people in the Toulouse area - including a teacher and four children at the Otzar Hatorah synagogue, was a member of the organization, as was his brother, who is under investigation in the case. The French authorities reacted angrily to the threat of "indecent" complaint against Paris made by the father of the young Jihadist Mohamed Merah, author of seven murders and killed by police last week.

Filmed by Mohamed Merah with a miniature camera strapped on him, video editing, "stored on a memory stick," was contained in an envelope mailed Wednesday and sent to the Paris office of Al Jazeera, according to police sources. "This is a video montage of images of different killings with music and verses from the Koran," he told AFP one of these sources. Al Jazeera has to decide Tuesday at a summit meeting in Qatar in the dissemination of these images or not, said the chain BFMTV Tarrouche Zied, Paris bureau chief of Al Jazeera.

Personally, Alain Juppe said Tuesday that he preferred the string refrain from doing so. "I think this incitement to violence, murder, on brain often fragile or disturbed is detestable," he said.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — Dozens of French Muslims are training with the Taliban in northwestern Pakistan, raising fears of future attacks following the shooting deaths of seven people in southern France allegedly by a man who spent time in the region, Pakistani intelligence officials said Saturday.

Authorities are investigating whether Mohamed Merah, the Frenchman of Algerian descent who is suspected of killing three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three French paratroopers in Toulouse this month, was among the training group, the officials said.

Merah was killed in a dramatic gunfight with police Thursday after a 32-hour standoff at his Toulouse apartment. The 23-year-old former auto body worker traveled twice to Afghanistan in 2010 and to Pakistan in 2011, and said he trained with al-Qaida in the Pakistani militant stronghold of Waziristan.

Approximately 85 Frenchmen have been training with the Pakistani Taliban in the North Waziristan tribal area for the past three years, according to the intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Most of the men have dual nationality with France and North African countries.

The Frenchmen operate under the name Jihad-e-Islami and are being trained to use explosives and other weapons at camps near the town of Miran Shah and in the Datta Khel area, the officials said. They are led by a French commander who goes by the name Abu Tarek. Five of the men returned to France in January 2011 to find new recruits, according to the officials. It’s unclear whether Merah was among that group.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy promised a crackdown on French citizens found to have trained in terror camps abroad.

“Anyone who goes abroad to follow ideological courses that lead to terrorism will be criminally punished. The response will be prison,” he said in a campaign speech Saturday.

A senior French official close to the investigation into the shootings told The Associated Press on Friday that despite Merah’s claims of al-Qaida links, there was no sign he had “trained or been in contact with organized groups or jihadists.”

A militant commander, Ahmed Marwat, claimed in a phone call with the AP on Saturday that Merah was affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban in Waziristan, but provided no details. Marwat said he was part of the Jundullah wing of the Pakistani Taliban.

The Pakistani Taliban, which is closely allied with al-Qaida, has carried out hundreds of attacks in Pakistan over the past several years that have killed thousands of people. Taliban leaders say they want to oust the U.S.-backed government and install a hardline Islamist regime. They also have international jihadi ambitions and trained the Pakistani-American who tried to detonate a car bomb in New York City’s Times Square in 2010.

The main sanctuary for the Pakistani Taliban is the restive tribal region along the Afghan border, especially North and South Waziristan. Despite a large military offensive in South Waziristan in 2009, the government has very little control over the area.

Western officials have been concerned for years about Muslim militants with European citizenship visiting northwestern Pakistan, possibly training for missions that could include terror attacks in Europe where they would act as “lone wolves” or on the orders of others. In 2010 alone, dozens were believed to be there.

Mohammed Merah, 23, who was killed when police commandos stormed his flat in Toulouse last week, is said to have met UK-based jihadists on a visit to Afghanistan. His codename – ‘Youssef Toulouse’ – was passed to British security agents.

The disclosures came as the girlfriend of one of Merah’s victims said she intended to marry her partner in a posthumous ceremony.

Merah’s brother Abdelkader, 29, and his 30-year-old wife, who has not been named, face charges of ‘conspiracy to commit terrorist acts’.

Abdelkader has boasted of feeling ‘very proud’ of his brother, who killed three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers.

Merah had been tracked by French authorities since he broke out of an Afghan prison in 2008. He worked as a mechanic in France, but returned to the Middle East to train with the Taliban. He is thought to have gone to Pakistan in 2010 and reached the Afghan  capital Kabul that November. He was picked up by US security agents and sent back to France.

Detectives believe Merah and his brother, an international terrorist suspect, were involved in two Islamist organisations, Forsane Alizza  (The Knights of Pride) and Al Qaeda splinter group Jund al-Khilafah.

A security source in Paris said: ‘Not only were members of these groups in touch with British jihadists while in Europe, they would also have met them in Afghanistan.’

One of the groups was formed with the aim of targeting Western interests in Europe and sending recruits to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was a ‘structured organisation’ that maintained links with similar networks in Britain, the source said. In 2009 several of its members were found guilty of terror-related offences.

The French authorities are facing growing criticism over Merah, a known fundamentalist who was on the US no-fly list and had attended an Al Qaeda training camp, being left to carry out his crimes. 

An autopsy found that he had 22 bullets in his body after being shot outside his council flat.
