OVER 100 HOLOCAUST SCHOLARS URGE OBAMA: CANCEL INVITE TO SUDAN DELEGATION (thanks to Dan)

Washington, D.C. - One hundred and seven leading Holocaust and genocide scholars from around the world have sent a letter of protest to President Obama, urging him to cancel a planned visit to the United States by Sudanese leaders involved in the Darfur genocide.

The delegation will represent Sudanese president Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for his role in the Darfur genocide. Heading the delegation will be Bashir adviser Nafie Ali Nafie, a prominent participant in the mass killings.

The letter of protest was organized by The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, based in Washington, D.C. It is the latest in a series of Wyman Institute initiatives seeking U.S. action to stop the Darfur atrocities and bring Bashir to justice.

"We must make it clear to the perpetrators of genocide that the United States will treat them as outlaws and bring them to justice, not treat them as respected statesmen and bring them here for friendly visits," the letter of protest argues.

The letter continues: "[W]e have just marked the 70th anniversary of the tragic Bermuda conference of 1943, at which the United States and England pretended to take an interest in the victims of Nazi genocide, but then did nothing to intervene. Let us not repeat that tragic mistake. The victims of Darfur must not be abandoned as were the Jews of Europe."

The 107 signatories on the letter, who come from the United States, Germany, Canada, Israel, England, South Africa, and Sweden, include the most distinguished figures in the field of Holocaust and genocide studies. The signatories include:

* Prof. David S. Wyman, author of The Abandonment of the Jews: America and the Holocaust 1941-1945.
* Prof. Ben Kiernan, director of the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University.
* Prof. Yehuda Bauer, former director of Yad Vashem’s International Center for Holocaust Studies.
* Prof. Deborah Lipstadt of Emory University, author of History on Trial.
* Prof. Walter Reich, former director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Sharia Justice in Sudan: Christian Convert out of Islam Struggles to See Children under Harsh Islamic Law in Sudan

The stories are so overwhelmingly inhumane, and yet the world collectivley yawns and frets about islamophobia and "respect" for the sharia. Sheesh.

KHARTOUM, Sudan, February 26 (Morning Star News) – Mohammed Khidir Khalil Hassan, a Sudanese convert from Islam, has to be careful what songs he sings to his sons.
 
Nearly a year ago, after his wife left him and Christianity behind, a Sudanese court had ruled that as a convert from Islam he was forbidden to see his children, then ages 3 and 5. An appeals court overturned the ruling last October and allowed him visits, but he knows any pretext could be used to keep him from them.
 
During one recent visit, one of the boys asked him to sing a Christian praise song entitled “Hosanna,” but he refrained – knowing his ex-wife and her Muslim family could use that as evidence that he was trying to convert the children to Christianity and automatically cancel his visitation rights.
 
“I see no freedom at all,” he said, pointing out that his ex-wife and her mother closely monitor his visits. “Such a system needs to be confronted. We have to decide to work for change in Sudan.”
 
A Sudanese court had ruled in March 2012 that his wife, as a member of “the popular religion,” be awarded custody of the children. His wife had presented a copy of a U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees certificate showing Khalil’s testimony as a Christian, as they had obtained asylum in Egypt from religious persecution in Sudan. The certificate was proof enough for a Sudanese judge to rule that the marriage be annulled and the children handed over to the spouse professing Islam.
 
The ruling perhaps reflects the prevailing anti-Christianity hostility in the air since South Sudan seceded in July 2011. Harassment, violence and arrests of Christians have intensified since largely Christian South Sudan seceded and President Omar al-Bashir vowed to root the country more deeply in sharia (Islamic law).
 
Hassan now visits the boys twice a month, Friday and Saturday of the first and second week for four hours each.
 
“What surprises me is that my wife denied that she was or has ever been a Christian before, yet we had a Christian wedding and during the birth of our first born, women from the Dinka community came to celebrate with us, as well as offering to us Christian prayers,” he said.
 
Khalil, who converted to Christianity in 2001, had met Manal Hassan in 2007. At that time she said she was neither a Christian nor a Muslim. The bride’s Muslim family learned that Khalil was a Christian but had no objection to the marriage, he said.

New Video Published On YouTube Features Two Assassins Of U.S. Diplomat Granville Explaining Their Escape From Maximum Security Prison In Sudan

On January 3, 2013, the Ansar Al-Mujahideen jihadi forum published the first part of a video featuring 'Abd Al-Basit Al-Hajj Al-Hassan Hajj Hammad and Muhammad Makawi Ibrahim Muhammad, who were among those implicated in the assassination of U.S. diplomat John Michael Granville and his driver in 2008 in Khartoum, Sudan. In the video, which was produced by the Al-Hijratayn Media Foundation, 'Abd Al-Basit and Makawi, who were recently designated terrorists by the U.S. State Department, explain in detail how they escaped from the Kobar maximum security prison, an operation they said was inspired by and similar to the 2011 Al-Mukalla Prison escape, in which dozens of AQAP operatives fled through a subterranean tunnel.

According to the Sudanese news website askmorgan.net, the 41:30 minute video was published on YouTube on December 29, 2012, but later removed by the site because "its content violated YouTube's Terms of Service." The video was first announced on Ansar Al-Mujahideen on December 26, 2012. Four escapees are shown in the video: 'Abd Al-Basit is shown presenting the escape plan in footage taken inside the prison. Makawai is shown sitting on the floor, with a black and white Al-Qaeda banner in the background. The third escapee, Mohand Osman, is featured briefly, along with a statement that he immigrated to Somalia and was martyred there. 'Abd Al-Ra'uf Abu Zaid Muhammad Hamza, the only escapee arrested by Sudanese security forces following the jailbreak, is shown taking part in the operation. Another man, whose face is obscured, is introduced as "brother Mortada." While no further information is provided about Mortada, who appears in the video to be reciting verses from the Koran, it is possible that details about him will be provided in part two.

An interview with Adel 'Abd Al-Ghani, a lawyer who represented Granville's alleged killers, on Al-Arabiya's Sina'at Al-Mawt show was also included in the video. In the interview, 'Abd Al-Ghani states that it would impossible for anyone to escape from Kobar, a maximum security prison equipped with high-tech security equipment.

Though the video, unsurprisingly, does not disclose the escapees' current location, there is reason to believe they may be in Somalia, where a large number of Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadis have sought refuge over the years.

Sudan: Israeli 'spy vulture' nabbed during reconnaissance mission

A vulture captured by Sudanese authorities is actually an Israeli spy on a secret reconnaissance mission, a pro-government newspaper in the east African nation has claimed.

Government sources say the vulture, found in western Sudan, was tagged with a GPS-equipped camera to take and send pictures back to Israel, according to a December 8 story in the Alintibaha newspaper.

The bird also wore an ankle label reading "Hebrew University Jerusalem," "Israel Nature Service" and the contact details of an Israeli avian ecologist.

The ecologist, Ohad Hatzofe of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, has rejected the Sudanese government claims -- saying the vulture, which can fly up to 600 kilometers in a single day, was tagged with GPS equipment to study its migration pattern.

"The Sudanese accusations are untrue," Hatzofe told CNN. "The GPS gear on these vultures can only tell us where the birds are, nothing else."

 

Human Rights Day at the UN: Election of Islamic Slave-holding Mauritania as VP of UN Human Rights Council

The monsters at the UN strike again. Slavery under Islam is encouraged, and it is still very much alive and legal in Mauritania. Modern-day slavery and the silence of black leadership in the country exposes these demagogues for what they really are: ghouls. The word for slave in Arabic is black. Robert Spencer wrote:

Anti-slavery crusaders have great difficulty in some Muslim countries because slavery is rooted in the Qur’an and Muhammad’s example. Muhammad owned slaves, and the Qur’an takes the existence of slavery for granted, even as it enjoins the freeing of slaves under certain circumstances, such as the breaking of an oath: “Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom” (5:89).

But while the freeing of a slave or two here and there is encouraged, the institution itself is never questioned. The Qur’an even gives a man permission to have sexual relations with his slave girls as well as with his wives: “The believers must (eventually) win through, those who humble themselves in their prayers; who avoid vain talk; who are active in deeds of charity; who abstain from sex, except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess, for (in their case) they are free from blame…” (23:1-6). A Muslim is not to have sexual relations with a woman who is married to someone else – except a slave girl: “And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess. It is a decree of Allah for you” (4:24).

Slavery is still practiced more or less openly today in Sudan and Mauritania, and there is evidence that slavery still continues beneath the surface in some majority-Muslim countries as well -- notably Saudi Arabia, which only abolished slavery in 1962, Yemen and Oman, both of which ended legal slavery in 1970, and Niger, which didn’t abolish slavery until 2004. In Niger, the ban is widely ignored, and according to a Nigerian study, as many as one million people remain in bondage there.

And that collective negation of humanity, aka the UN, has become the de facto arm of the modern-day caliphate, the OC (Organization of Islamic Conference.)

GENEVA, Dec. 10 – UN Watch condemned today's election of Mauritania, a country that allows 800,000 of its citizens to live as slaves, as Vice-President of the UN Human Rights Council.

In addition, the Geneva-based group also announced the failure of its yearlong campaign, with 55 MPs and NGOs, to get UNESCO to remove Syria from its human rights committee.

The UN Human Rights Council met today in Geneva and elected Mauritania as its Vice-President and Rapporteur for the next year, the second highest position at the world's top human rights body.

"It is obscene for the U.N. to use the occasion of Human Rights Day, when we commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to elect the world's worst enabler of slavery to this prestigious post," said Hillel Neuer, UN Watch executive director.

"The U.N. is making an arsonist head of the fire department. It defies both morality and common sense."

According to a recent report by the Guardian, "up to 800,000 people in a nation of 3.5 million remain chattels," with power and wealth overwhelmingly concentrated among lighter-skinned Moors, "leaving slave-descended darker-skinned Moors and black Africans on the edges of society."

In today's session, Poland was elected president, while Ecuador, Maldives, and Switzerland were also elected as vice-presidents.

Neuer also objected to Ecuador's election, citing its "notorious record of censoring independent journalists and shutting down newspapers."

UN Watch expressed regret that while the dictatorship of Belarus took the floor in today's meeting to criticize the election of Poland, none of the democracies said a word about the election of Mauritania or Ecuador.

12/1/2012 Sudan (CanadaFreePress) - The threat of genocide looms in Sudan as Christian and non-Arab communities in three regions have been targeted by President General Omar al-Bashir, a notorious leader well known for the systematic slaughter of those who oppose Islamisation.

When the mainly Christian south seceded from the predominantly Islamic north in 2011, the government of Sudan began to persecute “southerners” (those who are politically and culturally aligned with the south) living in the north, stripping them of their citizenship and denying them rights.

The attempts by the Khartoum government to drive out the ‘infidels’ or ‘blacks’ (as it refers to them) from the oil-rich areas of Abyei and South Kordofan, in which tens of thousands were killed in 2011, appear to be continuing. Recent aerial bombardments have completely demolished homes and farms (including crops) in these predominantly Christian areas. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced, acute malnutrition and famine have become widespread, and access to humanitarian aid has been denied.

In his weekly address to the nation last week commemorating the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, President Obama claimed that "we've strengthened our alliances while improving our security here at home." He boasted that more than 3-1/2 years into his presidency, "our country is stronger, safer and more respected in the world."

Those assertions would be fodder for the most blistering attacks from the mainstream media if this president were a conservative Republican instead of the furthest-to-the-left Democrat ever to sit in the Oval Office.

Less than a week after making such claims, the U.S. State Department had placed itself in an all-out crisis posture few Americans can ever remember happening before as mob attacks on U.S. embassies in the Middle East and North Africa expanded

KHARTOUM, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Sudan on Saturday rejected an official U.S. request to allow the entry of U.S. Marine infantry troops to its territories to enhance the protection around its embassy in Sudan following recent bloody protests in Khartoum.

"The U.S. State Department has filed an official request to Sudan to allow entry of a team of U.S. marines under the pretext of enhancing the protection around the American embassy," Al-Obaid Ahmed Mirawih, spokesman of Sudan's Foreign Ministry, told Xinhua.

"Ali Karti, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, apologized on the request and reiterated that the Sudanese authorities are capable of protecting all the diplomatic missions in Khartoum," he added.

On Friday, massive demonstrations broke out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum where thousands of protesters attacked the German and British embassies in Khartoum and then attempted to storm the U.S. embassy in protest against a movie that insults the Prophet Mohamed and which has triggered protests across the Arab and Islamic countries.

At least three protesters were killed during the protest on Friday near the U.S. embassy when they were hit by a police vehicle, while some 50 other civilians and policemen were injured.

In the meantime, U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden was reported to have called his Sudanese counterpart Ali Osman Mohamed Taha on Friday and urged him to ensure the protection of the diplomats in Khartoum.

The election of a Sudanese warlord accused of genocide to the United Nations Human Rights Council is now virtually guaranteed, since he has the full backing of the world body's African delegation. (FOX news)

Millions dead in jihadi wars in Darfur and southern Sudan, and this is the UN's pick for a seat on the "Human Rights" council, which includes Muslim slave-state Mauritania. The candidacies of Venezuela and Pakistan are also being protested by UN Watch and other human rights groups. 

One of Barack Hussein's first acts as President was to reverse President Bush's policy and seek a seat on the UN Human Rights council back in March of 2009. The Bush administration rightly shunned the United Nations' human rights body to protest the influence of repressive states. Obama's reversal is part of his  perverse and depraved transformation of American foreign policy. Once a force for good and freedom, we have become the very thing our nation once held in the utmost contempt.

Rights group UN Watch urges Ban Ki-moon, rights chief Navi Pillay to speak out

GENEVA, July 12 - Geneva-based human rights group UN Watch urged United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay to urgently speak out against the African-backed bid by Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir, indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court, for a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council.

 Last week, the U.S. failed to get the council to pass a condemnation of what it said was a Syrian candidacy for 2014.

The NGO UN Watch also called on US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the EU's Catherine Ashton to denounce and fight against Sudan's candidacy.

"Electing Sudan to the U.N. body mandated to promote and protect human rights worldwide is like putting Jack the Ripper in charge of a women's shelter," said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.

UN Watch already heads an international campaign of MPs and human rights groups opposing the candidacies of Venezuela and Pakistan.

The U.N.'s African group of states agreed behind closed doors to endorse the candidacies of Ethiopia, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Sudan. Because Africa has arranged for five countries to run for the same amount of allotted seats, Sudan's election is virtually assured.

"Technically," said Neuer, "Sudan must still receive an absolute majority of 97 affirmative country votes in the U.N. General Assembly's November election for new human rights council members. However, in the history of these ballots, names presented on a closed slate have never been rejected. It's just the way U.N. ambassadors work. And the fact is that Sudan has been chosen to head various U.N. groupings, so its election to the UNHRC, however outrageous, is a real possibility."

Neuer said that UN rights chief Navi Pillay, who hails from South Africa, could make a big difference by speaking out. "We need her to be the moral voice here, to urge other African countries to put their names forward, and to call for unequivocal opposition to Sudan's scandalous bid. Her role is crucial."

"Just a year after the human rights council sought to exorcise the ghosts of its past by suspending Col. Muammar Qaddafi's Libya -- which infamously chaired the body in 2003, and was reelected a member in 2010 -- it is now set to replace him with a tyrant wanted for genocide by the International Criminal Court. For how long must we have the inmates running the asylum?"

Neuer said that Sudan clearly failed to meet the criteria of UNGA Resolution 60/251, which established the UN Human Rights Council in 2006. General Assembly members are obliged to elect states to the Council by "tak[ing] into account the candidates’ contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights and their voluntary pledges and commitments made thereto." The resolution also provides that consideration ought to be given to whether the candidate can meet the obligations of Council membership, which include (a) to "uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights" and (b) to "fully cooperate with the Council."

"The U.N. and the cause of human rights will be severely damaged if Al-Bashir's Sudanese regime wins a seat," said Neuer. 

UN Watch also called on the U.S. and the EU to lead a vigorous campaign to defeat Sudan's candidacy, and to ensure there will be competition on the African slate of candidates.

"Last year, the democracies fought a successful campaign to defeat Syria, by persuading other countries to compete. Yet they said and did absolutely nothing in 2010 on Libya -- perhaps due to lucrative oil and business deals -- and Qaddafi won by a landslide. It's vital this year that the US and the EU announce early that they are opposed to having the oppressive Sudanese regime of Al-Bashir Assad judging the world on human rights," said Neuer.

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - A Sudanese woman accused of adultery has been sentenced to death by stoning and is being held shackled with her six-month-old baby in jail, activists said on Wednesday, in the second such sentence in the past few months in the country.

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said last month that Sudan would adopt a "100 percent" Islamic constitution, prompting concerns the country would apply Islamic law more strictly after the secession of mostly non-Muslim South Sudan a year ago.

A court in the capital Khartoum sentenced 23-year-old Laila Ibrahim Issa Jamool on July 10 to death by stoning for adultery, said Sudanese human rights activist Fahima Hashim who has been following her and other such cases.

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), a women's rights group, said it had assigned lawyers who had appealed against the conviction and sentence. Jamool's husband had accused her of adultery, it said.

"The appeal is understood to take not less than one-and-a-half months before a response can be got from the court of appeal. During all this time, Mrs Jamool will still be shackled in Omdurman (near Khartoum) women's prison together with her six-month (old) child," SIHA said in a statement.

The baby is in poor health it said, without giving further details.

Officials in Sudan's justice and information ministries were not available for comment.

Sharia law: Second Woman Sentenced to Death By Stoning in Sudan

A Sudanese woman was found guilty of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning by an Islamic court in Sudan. Human rights activists are appealing to the United Nations for relief, but the United Nations has endorsed the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights, which is a "human rights" declaration devised by Islamic countries; it endorses the Sharia. And Sharia contains the law mandating stoning for adultery. So who are they appealing to? The Organization of Islamic Cooperation will make sure that the UN does nothing. And the Arab League? The Arab League is the Muslim League -- they're not going to lift a finger against stoning for adultery.

Khartoum — Earlier this month a Sudanese woman was found guilty of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning by a court in the capital Khartoum, a regional women's rights group said Monday.

SIHA Network reported that on 10 July 2012, Judge Imad Shamoun sentenced Laila Ibrahim Issa Jamool, 23, to death by stoning for adultery at Al-Nasir Criminal Court under Article 146 of the Sudanese Penal Code 1991.

"Mrs. Jamool, is now being detained, shackled at the ankles with her six-month old baby at her side. The child is understood to be in poor health and Mrs. Jamool is in need of psycho-social support for her distress", SIHA said.

This is the second case of its kind this year. In April, Intisar Sharif Abdullah confessed to adultery after being beaten by her own brother and was sentenced to death by stoning. In both cases the women did not have access to a lawyer and were nursing children of breast feeding age, which is illegal under Sudanese and international law.

Article 36(3) of the 2005 Interim Constitution of Sudan states:

"No death penalty shall be executed upon pregnant or lactating women, save after two years of lactation."

Mrs. Abdullah was eventually released after an appeal with the retrial court finding a "lack of evidence" against her.

Responding to Mrs. Jamool's sentence SIHA - the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa - issued a statement demanding her immediate and unconditional release and the end to the criminalisation of women for adultery in Sudan. The group asked the Ministry of Justice and other relevant institutions to investigate and overturn the judgment.

SIHA's statement outlined that the case was "problematic" under both Sudanese and international law, calling on the "human rights community, The African Union, The Arab League, and United Nations and to oppose this practice and leverage its influence to prevent this act of brutality."

Under the United Nations Convention on Torture (1984) stoning is classed as cruel, inhuman and degrading. International human rights legislation that Sudan has signed prohibits stoning as a method of execution, according to SIHA's statement.

Critically, the human rights group said, "this has been taking place in absence of legal representation for Mrs. Jamool and after only three court sessions, inclusive of a referral to a higher court than that of first instance, Mrs. Jamool was sentenced to death by stoning."

Sudan is one of the few countries which retains the death penalty for adultery. However, its application has not been recorded in recent years. Many of Sudan's Public Order Laws (based on the government's interpretation of Islamic Shari'a Law) are inconsistently applied.

President Omar al-Bashir said recently that Sudan's new constitution would be "100% Islamic" following the secession of the largely Christian South of the country last year.

The legal procedures in Mrs. Jamool's case, SIHA said, are in clear violation of due process and Sudan's interim constitution:

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said on Saturday Sudan's next constitution would be "100 percent Islamic" to set an example for neighboring countries, some of which have seen religious parties gain power after popular uprisings.

The secession of mostly non-Muslim South Sudan a year ago sparked predictions that Sudan, which hosted former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, would start implementing Islamic law more strictly.

In a speech to leaders of the mystical Islamic Sufi tradition in Khartoum, Bashir suggested Sudan's new, post-secession constitution could help guide the region's political transformation.

"We want to present a constitution that serves as a template to those around us. And our template is clear, a 100 percent Islamic constitution, without communism or secularism or Western (influences)," said Bashir.

"And we tell non-Muslims, nothing will preserve your rights except for Islamic sharia because it is just," he said.

Following the 1989 coup that brought Bashir to power, Sudan introduced laws that took sharia as their main source.

Already, floggings are a common punishment in Sudan for crimes like drinking alcohol and adultery.

Sentences of stoning are rare, although in May a Sudanese woman was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, sparking condemnation from human rights lawyers. Similar sentences in the past have not been carried out.

Bashir has been in power for the last 23 years and is one of Africa's longest-serving leaders. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Darfur, charges the government says are politically motivated and baseless.

Sudan's opposition parties have called for strikes, sit-ins and demonstrations to topple Bashir's government, throwing their weight behind recent anti-austerity protests, which have also involved calls for greater freedoms.

However, they have not yet sent their supporters out to the streets.

Or worse yet, Arabic is now mandatory in a Harlem public school. More proof of the epic failure of African American leadership.

This speaks to the power of disinformation and propaganda, and the effects of the brutal enforcement of the blasphemy laws under Islam (do not criticize Islam, under penalty of death). The truth remains hidden. Unfathomable human rights abuses and shocking war crimes remain largely unknown to the masses -- not to the millions of victims, but they have been silenced.

In Mauritania, one activist speaks out, but even the NGOs and "Human Rights" organizations that pretend to speak for him denounce his actions in accordance with sharia law. What worthless quislings.

NOUAKCHOTT - Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid, a prominent anti-slavery activist in this northwestern African nation, is sitting in jail. The president of the Initiative for the Resurgence of Abolitionism (IRA) in Mauritania was arrested on April 29 with ten other people – relatives, IRA leaders and ordinary activists -- accused of “violating Mauritanian Islamic values” after an anti-slavery demonstration.

Though denied by authorities, slavery is still a common practice in Mauritania. Amnesty International is asking for the release of these “prisoners of conscience.”

On April 27, Biram, a descendant of slaves, gathered a group of activists for a collective Muslim prayer held outside, as slavery is a taboo subject in places of worship. It is a political act. After the prayers, he set fire to pages from books from the Maliki School of Islamic law, books that talk about servants’ rights and masters’ duties. These ancient books that promote slavery are still studied today.

Biram took great care not to burn the pages mentioning the Koran, Allah or Muhammad. But he was arrested a few hours later with great violence, thanks to an impressive number of elite forces.

Since then, Mauritanian NGOs like Mauritanian Human Rights Watch, SOS Slaves, and the Mauritanian Human Rights League, have denounced this book-burning as “provocative and ill advised.” They nevertheless ask for the immediate release of Biram and his relatives “so that they can have a trial as soon as possible, according to international standards.” After a month in custody, the prisoners were charged with threatening state security. Three of the ten activists -- but not Biram -- have been released.

For Amnesty International, freedom of speech includes “forms of expressions which can be considered as deeply shocking.” And indeed Biram’s autodafé shocked even his closest friends. “Biram is out of control; he is going too far and it harms the cause he defends," a close relative confides. "But it’s not a reason to harass him.”

In February 2011, the Mauritanian President pardoned Biram and five other IRA members after they were sent to prison for political activism. Some in Nouakchott worry that legal authorities could characterize the book-burning as a “terrorist act,” and inflict severe punishment.

“As Islamist groups are taking over in neighboring Mali, the Mauritanian government might try to pander to religious Mauritanians. Biram would be the perfect scapegoat,” says a Human Rights activist. The Mauritanian Human Rights action group concurs, wondering if “the hysterical crowd marching through the streets, screaming about blasphemy and asking for Biram’s death” is spontaneous or not. The public television showed the book-burning images over and over, reporting on the “fury of the huge masses.”

A delegation met with President Aziz to ask for a “doctrinal punishment against the IRA apostates.” What worries Boubacar Messaoud, president of SOS Slaves, is that the President is promising to apply Sharia law in Mauritania although he has always been a regional leader in the fight against al-Qaeda. A number of NGOs are denouncing a “growing Talibanization of society.” There are accounts of radical Islamism [sic] spreading in mosques of densely populated neighborhoods, where imams are getting the attention of unemployed youths.

The Mauritanian President, elected in the summer of 2010 after leading a coup d’état in 2009, is faced with a growing political opposition, who is asking for his resignation. In a regional context of crisis, the Mauritanian society is divided, caught between Black Africa (where the slaves hailed) and the Arab-Berber area (the Moors, who were the slaves’ masters).

Slavery is a sensitive subject. “For the authorities, this problem vanished when slavery was abolished in 1981 and since its criminalization in the penal code, in 2007. We speak about it in the past tense, we tell the story of a grandmother who was a slave. Today slaves might not be controlled through violence, but they are all around us, guarding camels and cleaning up the streets, even though we deny it,” denounces Boubacar Messaoud.

Following are excerpts from a report on the movement for abolishing slavery in Mauritania, which aired on Al-Arabiya TV on April 30, 2012 :

Reporter : The issue of slavery has taken center stage in Mauritania once again. A human rights organization fighting slavery burnt books of the Maliki school of jurisprudence, prevailing in Mauritania, claiming that they provide a religious justification for continuing slavery. The act took place at the end of a special prayer of slaves, which emphasized their right to lead Muslims in prayer. The burning of the books sparked fury among the public.

Sheik Hamad Ould Al-Tah, head of the Islamic Scholars Association in Mauritania : There has not been much slavery in Mauritania for a long while. A fatwa that was issued by the country's scholars, and was ratified by the authorities, abolished slavery.

Reporter : Demonstrations erupted throughout the country in condemnation of what was perceived as an affront to [Islam's] sanctities. The president of Mauritania met with the protestors, and promised to implement the [penalties] of Islamic law upon the leaders of the manumission movement, who burnt the books. The president ordered them arrested and handed over to the courts.

The anti-slavery movement apologized to the Mauritanians for the burning of the Maliki books. The movement explained that this was a symbolic act, in order to draw attention to jurisprudent views legitimizing slavery.

Human rights activist : We hereby apologize to the people of Mauritania and to all good Muslims who felt affronted by this act. We call upon them all to contemplate the feelings and dignity of the thousands of slaves.

Reporter : The activists deemed the reactions to the burning of the books to be extremist, and said that [the protestors] failed to see the connection between some religious texts and the suffering of slaves in Mauritania.

Anti-slavery activist Abeid Ould Amigin : I cannot accept the claim that slavery does not exist. After all, a slave-owner was found guilty, a few months ago, of enslaving two minors. I cannot accept that slavery does not exist, when the state legislated a law in 2007 criminalizing slavery. A state does not legislate laws for things that do not exist.

Muslim Mobs Set Church ablaze in Sudan: Church, school in ruins

Muslims burn and destroy the central church located in Khartoum’s Al-Jerif neighbourhood. The Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church, which has a congregation partly comprised of Southerners, is part of a larger compound that houses a number of other services, including a school. The structure was left in a shambles after Muslim mobs by the hundreds stormed the premises on Saturday, April 21. Whole rooms were ransacked, materials looted and part of the grounds set ablaze. This is Islam.

This ABC report equivocates between the north and south when it is the Islamic north, the aggressor, that has been persecuting, enslaving and slaughtering the South for decades, mirroring all of the jihad wars across the world. The moral equivocation of mainstream media.

Muslim Mob Burns Catholic Church in Sudan Capital ABC News

A Muslim mob set ablaze a Catholic church frequented by Southern Sudanese in the capital Khartoum, witnesses and media reports said on Sunday.

The church in Khartoum's Al-Jiraif district was built on a disputed plot of land, but the Saturday night incident appeared to be part of the fallout from ongoing hostilities between Sudan and South Sudan over control of an oil town on their ill-defined border.

Sudan and South Sudan have been drawing closer to a full-scale war in recent months over the unresolved issues of sharing oil revenues and the disputed border.

Last week, South Sudanese troops seized Heglig, which the southerners call Panthou, sending Sudanese troops fleeing. The Khartoum government later claimed to have regained control of the town.

The witnesses and several newspapers said a mob of several hundred shouting insults at southerners torched the church. Fire engines could not put out the fire, they said.

One newspaper, Al-Sahafah, said the church was part of a complex that included a school and dormitories. Ethiopian refugees living in the Sudanese capital also used the church.

The mostly Christian and animist South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011, some six years after a peace deal ended more than two decades of war between the two sides. Tens of thousands of southerners remain in Sudan, a legacy of the civil war that drove hundreds of thousands to seek relative safety in the north of what was then a single Sudanese nation.

Vice President Ali Osman Taha rejected suggestions by South Sudan for the deployment of international forces in Heglig, saying in a television interview that the area was internationally recognized as Sudanese territory.

Islamic North Sudan Declares War on South Sudan

After millions of were slaughtered in the jihad against Darfur and Southern Sudan by the Islamic North, the South voted for their freedom, and got it! Did you really think the Islamic supremacists in Northern Sudan were going to accept the will of the people and let the South live free?

The vicious jihadist President of Northern Sudan has declared war on the newly free South and "accused the South of implementing the agenda of foreign countries which backed its secession bid, at the expense of its own people." 99% of the people of Southern Sudan voted for secession. That's the real 99%.

Bashir is a bloodthirsty savage. And the West must take a stand to defeat jihad wherever and whenever it tries to impose iot bloody reign on free people.

Obama should condemn this fierce jihad and aid the South immediately, but don't hold your breath.

Sudan President Declares War On South Sudan YaLibnan (hat tip Danios)

Sudan’s president, Omar al-Bashir, Thursday declared war on South Sudan, vowing to topple its government.

The move comes after Sudan’s parliament passed a resolution branding South Sudan’s ruling party an enemy that “must be fought until it is defeated.”

Sudan and South Sudan are embroiled in the worst clashes along their poorly defined border since the secession of the South last summer. The United Nations Security Council is considering sanctions on both countries in an attempt to end the violence, and demanded South Sudanese forces withdraw from their occupation of the 60,000-barrels-a-day oil field Heglig oil field. Both countries continue to ignore calls to end the fighting.

On a visit Thursday to the oil-rich, restive border state of South Kordofan, Bashir rallied his troops, which are now engaged on three fronts with South Sudan.

“Heglig isn’t the end, it is the beginning, and we shall go all the way to [South Sudanese capital] Juba,” Bashir told a rally.

South Sudan’s army spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, dismissed Bashir’s threat, saying that the South’s army would keep Sudan’s aggression at bay.

“If they didn’t defeat us when we were a green army, how will they defeat us now,” he said.

Sudan and South Sudan have been at odds for 20 years, a time that included two civil wars believed to have claimed the lives of more than two million people. The South’s secession left several issues unresolved, including how to share oil revenue and production between the reserve-rich South and the north, center of refineries, ports and other infrastructure.

Battles around Heglig continued Thursday, with Sudanese planes continuing aerial bombardments, damaging oil wells and buildings, according to Col. Aguer. South Sudan said it repulsed a Sudanese ground attack on Heglig Wednesday evening, forcing Sudanese troops to retreat to Kersana, some 40 kilometers north of the oil field.

Troops also engaged around Bahr el Ghazal and South Sudan captured a base used by Sudan to train militias. These claims couldn’t be verified independently. Both countries accuse each other of sponsoring proxy rebels in the others territory.

Bashir accuses the South of implementing the agenda of foreign countries which backed its secession bid, at the expense of its own people.

South Sudan has called for talks to end the current dispute, with Information Minister Barnaba Benjamin saying that its people would never look at Sudan as its enemy due to their “long history and long common border.”

Many say hard-liners with a history of taking rigid negotiating positions seem to be running the show in both Sudan and South Sudan, a situation that may stymie attempts for a peaceful settlement of post secession disputes.

JUBA, South Sudan, April 6 (CDN) — Christians from South Sudan who have until Easter Sunday (April 8) to try to become citizens of Sudan or be deported fear authorities will use the occasion to rid the country of Christianity, church leaders said.

More than 500,000 citizens of southern ethnic origin who have been living in Sudan for decades – some of them born there – will be considered foreigners after Sunday. Human rights organizations have called on Khartoum to grant them more time to either leave or apply for citizenship.

Christian leaders expressed concern that local media such as the daily Al Intibaha newspaper have been stoking hatred against predominantly Christian southern Sudanese, describing them as “cancer cells in the body of Sudan, the land of the Arab and Islam,” and calling on the government to deport them.

“The local media are becoming very hostile toward us who are still in the north,” one Christian told Compass by phone on condition of anonymity.

Gov. Ahmad Abbass of Sennar state in central Sudan vowed to deport southern Sudanese from his state “without regret,” according to Alsahafa, an Arabic daily. Banners have appeared in Khartoum streets calling on the government and Muslims in general to harass and expel southern Sudanese, some of whom are also Muslims.

“Why are they still here? The government should expel them from the country,” one banner asserts....

As Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has pledged to base the new Sudan more deeply on sharia (Islamic law), ethnic southerners are faced with a difficult choice, Elizabeth Kendal writes in the Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin.

“The message essentially is this: Submit to sharia or get out,” she writes. “Churches may well be targeted immediately and aggressively, starting 9 April. All across the Sudan, churches have been emptying as ethnic southerners – including those born and raised in the north – flee south. This could eventually become a pretext for closing them.”

At the same time, police have been mistreating some of the more than 113,000 southern Sudanese who are living in open spaces in Khartoum after having fled conflict in South Sudan. Officers have removed their make-shift housing, including temporary latrines, according to Jovana Luka, deputy chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in South Sudan, who recently returned from Khartoum....

Northern Sudan is Islamic. After decades of jihad genocide and unspeakable horrors on the Southern Sudanese (Black Christians, Animist, secular Muslims) and two million slaughtered, southern Sudan voted for their independence last year from the Muslim north: "99% Vote for Independence in Southern Sudan: "Free at Last!"

Despite this, the Muslim North has continued to wage war against the South. You knew when the Christian South Sudan voted for freedom (secession) from the Islamic North Sudan that the Muslims would wage war against the Christians and non-Muslims in the South. And so they have.

As UN workers prepared to unload a helicopter full of food for more than 20,000 refugees in a camp in South Sudan Thursday, a series of horrifying thuds erupted, as a large plane swooped overhead, dropping bombs.

Witnesses say the plane dropped at least four bombs, with one landing in the yard of a makeshift school for 300 children gathered for an afternoon class. Thankfully, the explosive didn’t detonate. But other bombs did explode, and a local official reported at least 12 deaths.

The Christian aid group Samaritan’s Purse reported that its workers in the camp were safe after Thursday’s attack. The relief agency manages distribution of food and other supplies in the sprawling refugee camp. (The area is so remote and swampy, aid workers airdropped supplies to the refugees until Samaritan’s Purse cleared a landing strip.)

Authorities believe that military planes from Northern Sudan executed the bombardment on the Yida camp near the border with South Sudan. The two countries formally separated when South Sudan declared its independence on July 9. But conflicts over the disputed North-South border have left nearly 230,000 South Sudanese residents fleeing attacks from a Northern government determined to maintain control of the oil-rich borderlands.

Thousands of those refugees have fled to camps in South Sudan and Ethiopia, including the freshly attacked Yida camp some 10 miles south of the border. By Thursday afternoon, White House officials called the bombing “outrageous,” and demanded that Sudan’s government cease attacks on its southern neighbor.

It was the second bombing in less than a week. Three days earlier, military planes bombed the South Sudanese town of Queffa, killing at least seven. The government of Northern Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming rebels near the border, but South Sudanese President Salva Kiir said the allegations are an excuse for the north to attack.

“All these accusations are actually a prelude from Khartoum to justify their pending actions against South Sudan,” he said. “When Bashir [the president of Sudan] invades South Sudan, he will say he took the action to revenge what was being done to him.”

A U.S.-based satellite monitoring group expressed growing concerns over a widening campaign against South Sudan on Friday: The Satellite Sentinel Project reported that aerial photos show Sudanese forces enhancing their bases near the North-South border. Those enhancements include adding three helicopter gunships and an Antonov—the plane that witnesses described after Thursday’s attack.

Leonard Leo of the Washington, D.C.-based United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) condemned the recent attacks and called the bombings “clearly an outgrowth of Sudan’s hostility against religious freedom.” During 20 years of civil war that spanned 1983 to 2005, the Muslim-based government in the North tried to force the predominantly Christian South to submit to Islamic law.
