It is no secret that public discourse in this country has become very shrill. Blogs on the left regularly feature vulgar diatribes against the right. Some on the right do the same. Keith Olbermann tells the President to "shut the hell up" on his television program. The New York Times publicly reveals the name of a CIA agent who did the dirty work of interrogating captured Al Qaeda operatives. The left says, "So, the right did it to Valerie Plame," treating as morally equivalent the disclosure of the spy no longer spying and the disclosure of one of the men Al Qaeda would love to behead.

Dismissive of the fact that it was Armitage all along.

While Congress has also descended into a more shrill style, until yesterday it had not crossed one line of civility that never should be crossed on either side.

David Addington is the Vice President's Chief of Staff. Yesterday, he testified before Congress.

During the course of the hearing, Congressman and Obama Superdelegate William Delahunt (MA-10) asked Mr. Addington about water boarding. Mr. Addington responded that he would not go into details because Al Qaeda is probably watching.

Congressman Delahunt's response was, "I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you."

Mr. Delahunt now denies he meant what he said. But what he clearly said was "I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you." Al Qaeda now knows the face of one of the men who relentlessly pursues its henchmen and deals with their interrogations. Mr. Addington volunteered for public service, not a death sentence with Congressional encouragement. Mr. Delahunt is both a vile liar and a cowardly lion willing to roar down at Mr. Addington while encouraging terrorists to do his dirty work in a war he has been ineffective at stopping.

The left, while attacking Charlie Black for stating the obvious -- that a terrorist incident helps the GOP politically because they are seen as more competent in the national security arena -- is defending this degradation of congressional discourse and vile swipe at Mr. Addington.

This discourse — a member of Congress glad Al Qaeda has a face it can pursue — is beneath the dignity of the Congress and beneath the dignity of civil discourse in this country.

If you do not call your Congressman today and demand the House of Representatives, at the very *least*, censure Congressman Delahunt, well damn us all. We have no right to carry on our fight.

NEWSWEAK SURRENDERS, POST AMERICA SUBMITS TO ISLAMIC CENTURY

In the latest edition of Newsweek, Fareed Zakaria writes, “The world has shifted from anti-Americanism to post-Americanism,” and goes on to describe the ‘rise of the rest’ of the world.

A Muslim, born in India, Zakaria also writes off terrorism and suggests that Americans are more likely to drown in their bathtubs than be the victim of a terrorist attack. He adds that deaths by organized violence is in a downtrend, that Al-Qaeda in Iraq is more anti-Shiite than anti-American, that Al-Qaeda “used to do terrorism, now they make videotapes”, and that such groups along with Iran are much less of a threat than Germany or Russia did during the 20th century. He also uses the crutch all Muslims and Muslim apologists lean on, “But it is increasingly clear that militants and suicide bombers make up a tiny portion of the world’s 1.3 billion Muslims.” Of course he offers no evidence for this fact nor does he pontificate on the hundreds of thousands of Muslims around the world, including the U.S., who regularly protest against non-Muslims, burn flags and effigies, and carry signs advocating death to non-Muslims.

While acknowledging America is still the most competitive economy in the world, Zakaria goes on to suggest that the solution to America’s woes are more immigration, and more acceptance of and participation in globalization, and to help bring the rising powers into the global economy rather than obsessing over our own short-term interests. “If China, India, Russia, Brazil all feel that they have a stake in the existing global order, there will be less danger of war, depression, panics, and breakdowns.”

If one looks at the Newsweek pictures and reads the words carefully, he/she may get the impression that some would prefer America relinquish all nationalism and pride for the sake of a new era where an economy of equally distributed wealth would lead to a peaceful, terror-free world.

‘It’s too tantalising, since there’s no shadow of a doubt we will reject any such suggestion,’ Frances Partridge wrote in her diary afterwards, adding the savagely deflating rider: ‘Now I suppose Churchill will again tell the world that we are going to die on the hills and on the seas, and then we shall proceed to do so.’

If this fascinating and upsetting book is the story of anything, it is above all the story of Winston Churchill telling the world that we are going to die on the hills and on the seas, and of people then doing so — and dying, too, in the forests and in the valleys, the ghettos and in the cities, in the air and in tunnels under the ground.

The standard squawk of protest will be that Baker is indulging the unforgivable sin of ‘moral equivalence’. I don’t think he is — though he wades in exceptionally deep waters. He is indulging, we can say, in ‘moral comparison’. He is interested above all in trying to find a way to step to one side of the endless rhetorical circles by which ends justify means, and the means of the other side justify making your means your ends. He is interested in the self-affirming pathology of violence, and in the ways that a war, waged by all means deemed necessary by its leaders, became on both sides a racist war of extermination.

Beyond any doubt, there were crazed symmetries, because both sides believed that the answer to violence was more violence. Canting references to ‘peace-loving’ nations driven to take up arms by intolerable aggression were belied by the bloodthirsty reality. ‘Peace offensive’ is a term used with great pungency here; as is talk of the ‘moral effect’ on civilians of indiscriminate bombing. The one common enemy Churchill and Hitler had were people who didn’t want to kill at all. Pacifists and humanitarians were regarded on both sides as a pernicious threat — to be suppressed in print and interned in person.

The two chief evils Human Smoke addresses in most detail are both things that the Allies took the lead on: bombardment and blockade. Both were methods of war aimed at civilians. Both caused incredible suffering. Both were sold on a series of lies. Both did not work. The response in both cases was to step them up.

As refugees and civilian populations in Belgium, Poland, Norway and Holland faced starvation, Churchill refused to let food relief through the blockade. He told Parliament that fats would be used by the enemy to make bombs, potatoes used to make fuel, and that — less plausibly — ‘the plastic materials now so largely used in the construction of aircraft are made of milk’.

Even before the 2001 terrorist attacks, American-born imam Anwar al-Aulaqi drew the attention of federal authorities because of his possible connections to al-Qaeda. Their interest grew after 9/11, when it turned out that three of the hijackers had spent time at his mosques in California and Falls Church, but he was allowed to leave the country in 2002.

New information later surfaced about his contacts with extremists while in the United States. Now, U.S. officials are saying for the first time that they believe that Aulaqi worked with al-Qaeda networks in the Persian Gulf after leaving Northern Virginia. In mid-2006, Aulaqi was detained in Yemen at the request of the United States. To the dismay of U.S. authorities, Aulaqi was released in December.

"There is good reason to believe Anwar Aulaqi has been involved in very serious terrorist activities since leaving the United States, including plotting attacks against America and our allies," said a U.S. counterterrorism official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Senators Introduce Semper Fi Act of 2008

Bill Stops Berkeley Earmarks and Transfers Funds to Marine Corps

February 6th, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina), Saxby Chambliss (R-Georgia), Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-Oklahoma), John Cornyn (R-Texas), James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), and David Vitter (R-Louisiana) introduced the Semper Fi Act of 2008. The bill would rescind over $2 million in hidden earmarks for Berkeley, California in the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill, and transfer the funds to the Marine Corps. U.S. Congressman John Campbell (R-California) is introducing a companion bill in the House of Representatives.

Last week, the City Council of Berkeley voted to oust Marine Corps recruiters from their downtown office, saying the Marines were "uninvited and unwelcome intruders." Berkeley officials also voted to give the radical protest group Code Pink space outside the recruitment office and urged them to "impede, passively or actively" the work of Marine Corps recruiters. One earmark provides $243,000 in taxpayer dollars for the organization Chez Panisse to create gourmet organic school lunches in the Berkeley School District. Chez Panisse is dedicated to "environmental harmony" and their menu features "Comté cheese soufflé with mâche salad," "Meyer lemon éclairs with huckleberry coulis," and "Chicory salad with creamy anchovy vinaigrette and olive toast."

Another earmark would spend $975,000 in taxpayer dollars for the University of California in Berkeley Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service, to create a new endowment and cataloging the papers of Congressman Robert Matsui. U.C. Berkeley currently already has a $3.5 billion endowment. Senator DeMint: "Berkeley needs to learn that their actions have consequences. Patriotic American taxpayers won't sit quietly while Berkeley insults our brave Marines and tries to run them out of town. Berkeley City Council members have shown complete ingratitude to our military and their families, and the city doesn't deserve a single dime of special pet project handouts."

Senator Cornyn: "The Berkeley City Council insulted our troops and offended people across the country. If the U.S. Marines are not good enough for Berkeley, neither are taxpayer dollars Congress would have sent there this year. That city closed its doors on the same individuals taking bullets on the front lines while fighting for the safety and freedom of families in Berkeley and throughout America." Senator Vitter: "The actions of the City Council of Berkeley are in stark contrast to beliefs of the vast majority of Americans who recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of our U.S. Marines. This is simply unacceptable and those funds could be better utilized by the Marine Corps."

Dr. Coburn: "The actions by the city of Berkeley are deplorable and insulting to those who are serving and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the very freedoms that are being exercised to insult them. I know I stand with the majority of Americans in thanking our service men and women for their selfless service to our nation." Senator Inhofe: "Unfortunately, those on the Berkeley city council do not seem to understand the sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Marine Corps. By interfering with military recruiting, the city of Berkeley is hampering our ability to protect this nation. While the city of Berkeley and the protestors are free to say whatever they like, free speech is not a protection from consequence."

Senator Chambliss: "We need to send a strong message that our military personnel deserve our strongest support. Georgia is a proud military state, and my constituents will be out outraged to know that during a time of war, their taxpayers dollars have been used to reward folks who have insulted and disparaged those who defend this nation every day."

Earlier this week, I sighed heavily when yet another high minded intellectual, David Frum,  following in Dinesh's footsteps, had switched gears and gone on to attack the very people that will lead us to victory in the war on the Jihad. The greatest historians of our time, once again getting nailed to the cross, for telling the truth. Kill the messenger. As if the counter jihad movement wasn't small enough!

When I ran Robert's rebuttal, I wrote here, " David Frum has entered the jihad fray hoping to project his Western thinking onto what he would like the  Koran to be. Isn't that special? And tiresome. This is not Frum's milieu and it shows. I have been studying and covering this single subject intensively for 3 years now after coming to it after 9/11/01. I won't pretend to know as much as Spencer, Yeor, Bostom, Warraq, but I do know that they provide empirical evidence. They do the work to substantiate their deductions. It's not theory. It's fact and they back it up."

I blame Bernard Lewis for a lot of bad information, bogus intel and  fallacious deductions. Considered the world's leading scholar on Islam, he is an apologist and in many cases confused,dithering even,  if not  a liar.  His historical inaccuracies are well documented but his positions are enormously influential to world leaders and opinion makers so the harm he does is incalculable.

Bat Ye’or: Rejoinder to David Frum

David Frum's piece is here; my response is here. And now the great historian Bat Ye’or has kindly sent me this response:

In his latest article, “Ancient Holy Books, Modern Dilemmas” (posted January 8, 2008), David Frum poses as a referee in a disputation, pretending there are two alleged extremes, whereas he ignores the rules and the meaning of the subject itself. This hoax has often been used by Sages who pontificate: “As usual, the truth is in the middle.” But often this scenario of two opposed extremisms allows the Sages to pride themselves on what is only the appearance of wisdom. Moreover, this catch-phrase is meaningless, because truth is not found at a linear distance between two extremes. Between the Nazi genocidal policy toward the Jews and the victims’ affirmation of their right to live there is no middle-way solution. Would we discuss how many Jews it would be right for the Nazis to exterminate? Between slavery and human equality, there is no middle position. Between the dehumanization of dhimmitude and the inalienable right to freedom, dignity and equality, there is no meeting in the middle. Would one haggle over the amount due for protecting one’s life and rights?

David Frum describes my work as a study of Islam, whereas it is research into a neglected and specific domain involving Islamic theology, jurisprudence and history in relation to non-Muslims. Within this particular field, I only examined the Jewish and Christian aspect, not that of the Zoroastrians and other religious denominations. It is therefore not an assessment of Islam in general. Even more, in none of my writing is there the implication that Islam must disappear for the sake of peace. Maybe Frum has hidden his own thought, which he unconsciously projects on Robert Spencer and myself, while contrasting our alleged somber designs with his own generous wisdom -- which is not, in the least, very original. It hangs on the usual love paradigm of interfaith dialogue, dhimmi biased vision, and subvention of billions of dollars, while waiting with humble timidity for a powerful Muslim majority to reinterpret the Koran as a book of universal love and peace. I do not object to that, except that meanwhile, Muslim reformers even in Europe must hide to save their lives, while terrorism claims countless innocent victims throughout the globe, and tomorrow we might be facing a global nuclear jihad.

Inexplicably David Frum of the American Enterprise Institute—hardly an authority on Islamic doctrine, or history—has nevertheless lashed out——albeit inaccurately, and within the constraints of his own crude understanding—at two contemporary scholars, Bat Ye’or and Robert Spencer. A serious, respected writer/essayist on jihad terrorism sent me this assessment:

I don’t know why I should be surprised at this kind of thing any more, but I am. Frum really should have known better.

His criticism makes it sound as if you [AB] and Bat Ye’or and Spencer simply read the Koran and the Life of Mohammad, and inferred the nature of Islam from these isolated texts. As I said in my book—I would have no problem if Muslims decided to go back and read jihad out of the Koran; it would be okay if they pretended jihad had never played any important role in the expansion of Islam. I would rejoice if Muslims really behaved as Frum thinks he would behave if he were a Muslim! But it ain’t gonna happen.

Secularized Westerner intellectuals like Frum simply cannot imagine what it is like to be possessed by a living faith that commands its faithful to expand the community of the faithful by violent methods. This kind of fanaticism, as I argue in my book, is outside their imaginative scope. So whenever contemporary scholars like you, Bat Ye’or, or Spencer point out what every schoolboy once knew about Islam, you are the ones who are treated like extremists. When your first book came out I was astonished that anyone thought it was controversial. You didn’t make up the idea of jihad—you simply documented the historical Muslim theory and practice of it. And yet that is considered as “going too far.” The same thing can be said of Bat Ye’or work. If the two of you were merely investigating a historically transcended and outmoded form of Islam, I suppose you could be blamed for failing to let the dead bury the dead. But today people are still dying and killing in the name of Islam—but we are forbidden even to see the truth, let alone speak it.

3 ex-wives of Muslim bakery founder allege elaborate welfare scam SF Gate.com hat tip Clyde

As the late Yusuf Bey built Your Black Muslim Bakery into an empire of
wealth and influence, he also orchestrated a systematic welfare fraud scheme at his Oakland compound, three of his former wives have testified.

   By the wives' sworn account, Bey directed many of the 100 women whom he considered his wives to make fraudulent applications for government aid programs intended to assist poor families, then diverted the benefits to himself.

   Bey's alleged fraud scheme began in the 1970s and continued in some form until his death in 2003, according to the women, who gave depositions in a negligence lawsuit against Alameda County that was settled out of court earlier this year.

   The allegations prompted an extensive investigation by county officials, but incomplete county records and the complicated nature of the alleged scheme were key reasons the investigation stalled, and no civil suit to recover money was filed, said Alameda County Counsel Richard E. Winnie.    The revenue - thousands of dollars per month, perhaps more than $1 million over the course of the scheme, testimony in the case suggests - helped inflate the clout of Your Black Muslim Bakery, a business Bey proselytized as an icon of economic self-sufficiency.

The depositions and other evidence obtained by The Chronicle allege:

   -- Bey's wives fraudulently obtained Aid to Families with Dependent Children payments and General Assistance monies that were then diverted into bakery coffers.

   -- Bey family members fraudulently collected Section 8 vouchers - designed to help the poor with rent payments - despite owning houses in the Bay Area.

   -- Bey's children fraudulently received medical coverage through Medi-Cal, a program for the state's neediest residents.

   In all, roughly 100 women and many of the 46 children Bey is thought to have fathered were involved in the fraud scheme, according to the wives - a category, the depositions say, that included girls whom Bey allegedly raped and impregnated.

U.S. Intelligence Officials Will Probe Leak of Bin Laden Video WaPo hat tip Wolf

U.S. intelligence officials will investigate allegations that the government improperly leaked a secretly obtained Osama bin Laden video, alerting al-Qaeda to a security gap in the terrorist group's internal communications network that it was able to shut, an intelligence spokesman said yesterday.

Ross Feinstein, a spokesman for the director of national intelligence, said officials are looking into the leak allegation by the SITE Intelligence Group, which passed the video on to the White House and the director of national intelligence's office before its leak.

"At this point, we don't think there was a leak from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence or the National Counterterrorism Center," Feinstein said.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino, responding to a description of the leak in yesterday's editions of The Washington Post, told reporters that "this was a cause of concern that the information was leaked. And I would have to refer to the DNI's office in regards to any possible investigation into that leak."

VIRGINIA JIHADI APPOINTEE RESIGNS AFTER VIDEOS Investigative Project

RICHMOND, Va. — A member of the state's Commission of Immigration resigned Thursday, a few hours after Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was told about online videos showing the appointee condemning Israel and advocating "the jihad way."

Kaine issued a statement saying he had accepted the resignation of Dr. Esam S. Omeish. He said Omeish offered to resign because he didn't want anything to distract the work of the commission.

In a video that appears on YouTube, Omeish, who is president of the Muslim American Society and chief of the division of general surgery at INOVA Alexandria Hospital, is shown at an August 2006 rally in Washington denouncing an invasion of Lebanon by the "Israeli war machine."

Omeish also accuses Israel of genocide and massacres against Palestinians and said the "Israeli agenda" controls Congress.

In a separate, undated video, Omeish tells a crowd of Washington-area Muslims: "...you have learned the way, that you have known that the jihad way is the way to liberate your land." That video was credited to Investigative Project, a Washington-based organization that investigates radical Islamic organizations.

A caller to Kaine's program on WRVA radio in Richmond asked the governor Thursday morning about the Omeish appointment and the video.

"That is news to me, what you say, and it's something we will check out," Kaine told the caller, identified on the air only by the name Kent.

Putz! Vet before appointing!

Kaine spokesman Kevin Hall said the governor tried to call Omeish afterward and also watched the videos. In the statement released later Thursday, Kaine said he was concerned by what he heard on the videos.

Mahdi Bray , a spokesman for the MAS, said Omeish was not available for comment.

Omeish was among 10 appointments Kaine made on Aug. 2 to a 20-member panel created this year by the General Assembly to assess the benefits and costs of immigration and the effects on federal immigration policies on the state. The commission met in Richmond for the first time Tuesday.

(Coral Springs, FL) The Muslim Foundation of America.(MFA) has removed from its website a flyer containing a picture of Congressman Keith Ellison, advertising him as the Grand Marshal of its upcoming 22nd annual Muslim Day Parade taking place in New York City. The flyer was posted to the homepage of the group’s site, last week. A photo of a mosque has taken its place.

The change of content on the MFA site has fueled speculation that the Congressman had cancelled his appearance due to recent reports about the extremism of individuals and groups that are or have been associated with the parade. Past Marshals of the parade have been found to be Islamist radicals. They include unindicted co-conspirator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Siraj Wahhaj, and accused death squad leader of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide, Ashrafuzzaman Khan. As well, many of the organizations co-sponsoring the parade have various ties to militant Islamic groups.

Joe Kaufman, the Chairman of Americans Against Hate (AAH), stated, “It seems odd that the organizers of the parade would advertise Congressman Ellison’s participation in the parade for nearly a week, if he had no intention of being involved in the event. Regardless, though, we will not be changing our plans to protest both the parade and Ellison.”

Americans Against Hate’s protest will be taking place in New York City on September 9th.

Protestors are asked to arrive at 12:30 PM. The protest will begin shortly thereafter. Joe Kaufman will be speaking at the event.

DHIMMICRAT BLOOMBERG REJECTS CAMPAIGN TO CANCEL ISLAMISTS PARADE

City Hall has been bombarded with phone calls, letters and e-mails generated by an Internet campaign aimed at stopping Sunday's 22nd annual United American Muslim Day Parade along Madison Avenue, city officials said.

Many of the blogs and online news sites decrying the parade as a threat to national security also targeted the opening of the Arab-language Khalil Gibran middle school in Brooklyn earlier this week. One of the Web sites is calling for a protest rally at Madison Avenue and 26th Street, a block south of where the parade ends.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg responded to the critics with a form letter in which he noted that Muslims are a "vital part of our city."

"It would be a terrible mistake for anyone to implicate a whole group of innocent individuals -- no matter what their faith -- with the terrible acts committed on September 11, 2001," the mayor wrote.

Organizers called the parade a chance for Muslims to share their culture with other New Yorkers and predicted that the protest campaign would swell the ranks of attendees.

Sayyid Syeed, former Secretary General of ISNA, and current National Director of its Office of Interfaith Relations, is also on the list as a “records custodian” to testify about “bank records of the Holy Land Foundation.” Syeed is appearing as a representative of the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT), also named by the HLF prosecutors as a Muslim Brotherhood group and an un-indicted co-conspirator in the case. NAIT, a subsidiary of ISNA, holds the deeds to more than 25% of the mosques and Islamic centers around the U.S. What NAIT does not control, it attempts to acquire, even against the wishes of the mosque’s membership (free registration required) and sometimes by force.

The Justice Department is co-sponsoring a convention held by the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) — an unindicted co-conspirator in an ongoing federal terrorist funding case — a move that is raising concerns among the Justice's rank and file.

Justice lawyers have objected to the affiliation with ISNA, fearing it will undermine the case against the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development in Dallas.

"There is outrage among lawyers that the Department of Justice is funding a group named as a co-conspirator in a terrorist financing case," said a Justice lawyer who spoke to The Washington Times on the condition of anonymity.

According to an e-mail from Susana Lorenzo-Giguere, acting deputy chief of the Voting Rights Division, the sponsorship will involve sending government lawyers to man a booth for the Labor Day weekend event in Illinois.

"This is an important outreach opportunity, and a chance to reach a community that is at once very much discriminated against, and very wary of the national government and its willingness to protect them," Mrs. Lorenzo-Giguere said in an e-mail obtained by The Washington Times.

"It would be a great step forward to break through those barriers. And Chicago is lovely this time of year," Mrs. Lorenzo-Giguere said.]

How can Mrs. Lorenzo-Giguere know what the weather if she wears the burka? She's only steps away from that now.

ISNA is one of more than 300 unindicted co-conspirators in a case against the Holy Land Foundation, whose top officers are accused of raising money for Hamas.

Justice spokesman Erik Ablin said the agency participates in the annual convention to educate Muslims about their civil rights.

(TAMPA, FL, 8/24/07) €“ The Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Tampa) announced today that a local television station has dropped a program that promoted hatred of Islam and Muslims.

Uh oh, Keller must have recited passages from the Koran.

CAIR-Tampa said WTOG-TV (CW 44) dropped “Live Prayer with Bill Keller” after the station and its parent company CBS received a letter from and had discussions with the Islamic civil rights and advocacy group.

Keller told the St. Petersburg Times: "Ultimately, it was pressure by CAIR that intimidated these people into taking me off the air. It was not mutually agreeable. They told me they were taking me off the air, period."

Earlier this month, CAIR asked CBS executives to remove Keller's nightly talk show from WTOG-TV Ch. 44, a CBS-owned station that airs the CW network locally. The group was upset about a spate of recent broadcasts by Keller that disparaged Islam and the prophet Mohammad.

WTOG station manager Laura Caruso said the decision to end Keller's contract was a mutual decision and had nothing to do with complaints from individuals or groups.

Burnett Sr: "Withhold my son's name from 9/11 Islamic Memorial"

Alex, intrepid blogger on the Islamic Memorial to the Flight 83, writes that Post Gazette reporter Paula Ward’s had an article today on Tom Burnett Sr.’s protest of the crescent design. In it she does some real legwork, getting a bunch of insane comments from several of the principles. I just put up a post that exposes their various lies and willful blindness.

Nearly two years after the design of the United Flight 93 Memorial was changed to eliminate any perceived Islamic symbolism, the father of one of the people killed in the crash has asked that his son's name be withheld from the monument.

"It's something I'd rather not do, but I can't get anyone to listen," said Tom Burnett Sr., of Northfield, Minn. "In a sense, I'm asking for a call to action."

Mr. Burnett, who served on the Stage II jury that picked the winning design originally named "Crescent of Embrace," said that he raised his concerns about using a crescent-shaped grouping of red maple trees around the crash site then.

"It's almost as though it's intentional," he said. "This design should not invoke any Islamic impression of any sort."

He called the crescent a well-known, widely accepted Muslim symbol that doesn't belong in a memorial honoring the 40 passengers and crew members who were killed on the flight headed from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco, on Sept. 11, 2001, in their efforts to thwart an attack on the capital.

When the concerns about the use of the crescent first arose, the designer of the memorial, Paul Murdoch, willingly changed the shape to an almost full circle.

But criticism, largely driven by online blogs, has continued.

Thank Gd for the blogs, that's all I can say.

Mr. Burnett has based many of his concerns in the theories put forth by conservative blogger, Alec Rawls, who has also written a book, "Crescent of Betrayal," on the matter.

On Mr. Rawls' Web site, errortheory.blogspot.com, he cites a number of examples of how he believes the Flight 93 memorial is really a monument to terrorists.

Among his allegations:

• "A person facing into the giant central crescent of the Flight 93 Memorial is facing Mecca."
• There are 44 glass blocks being used in the design, representing the 40 passengers and four terrorists who hijacked the plane.
• The 93-foot tall Tower of Voices, which will include wind chimes to represent those who died, is an Islamic sundial. "Shadow calculations confirm that, on any day of the year, when the tower shadow reaches the inner arc of trees, it will be time for Islamic afternoon prayers."

Alex continues to expose the many Islamic and terrorist memorializing features in the chosen memorial design. This is an ongoing fight. Those brave Americans who died fighting the Islamic terrorists on flight 93 did not die in vain. Several important developments.

One of the local newspapers, the Johnstown Tribune Democrat, finally fact checked my claim that a person facing directly into the the giant central crescent of the Crescent of Embrace design will be facing almost exactly at Mecca. (This central crescent remains completely intact in the Bowl of Embrace redesign, which only added a few trees to the rear left of a person facing into the giant crescent.)

This fact checking is trivially easy to do. I gave reporter Kirk Swauger the address of a Muslim websit, Islam.com, that has a Mecca direction calculator. While I was on the phone with him, Kirk set the calculator to Somerset PA and clicked on "view qibla direction." He placed the resulting Mecca direction graphic over the Crescent of Embrace site-plan PDF (recreated below) and said: "Yup. It points to Mecca":

The green circle, marked with the qibla for Somerset, is from Islam.com. A person standing at the midpoint between the most obtruding tips of the crescent structure and facing into the center of the crescent (red arrow), will be facing almost exactly at Mecca.

I have documented the Tribune Democrat's long resistance to fact checking my cliams, followed by its refusal publish its own fact checking of my claim that the Crescent/Bowl design has 44 inscribed memorial glass blocks emplaced along the flight path (matching the number of passengers, crew, and terrorists). But in the end the Trib-Dem finally came through. Many thanks to Kirk Swauger for checking the orientation of the crescent, and to editor Chip Minemyer for publishing it:

His claims seem to be backed up by coordinates for the direction of qibla from Somerset that can be found on Islam.com. When superimposed over the crescent in the memorial design, the midpoint points over the Arctic Circle, through Europe toward Mecca.

Kirk also quoted me on the meaning of this Mecca oriented crescent:

“A crescent that Muslims face into is called a mihrab. It’s the central feature on which every mosque is built,” said Rawls, who says his book is scheduled to be released next month by World Ahead Publishing.

Senator Charles Schumer announced today that democrats will oppose the Constitution.

The Politico reported:

New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer, a powerful member of the Democratic leadership, said Friday the Senate should not confirm another U.S. Supreme Court nominee under President Bush "except in extraordinary circumstances."

"We should reverse the presumption of confirmation," Schumer told the American Constitution Society convention in Washington. "The Supreme Court is dangerously out of balance. We cannot afford to see Justice Stevens replaced by another Roberts, or Justice Ginsburg by another Alito."

Schumer's assertion comes as Democrats and liberal advocacy groups are increasingly complaining that the Supreme Court with Bush's nominees – Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito – has moved quicker than expected to overturn legal precedents.

Here we have Schumer announcing that democrats will change Article 2 Section 2 of the Constitution and take over the responsibility of appointing justices to the Supreme Court.

And, Congressional democrats wonder why they have the lowest approval ratings on record?
