Filip Dewinter At Oriana Fallaci Memorial: Islam a Stagnant Pool

BTW, I saw Fallaci in  what I think was her last public appearance back in November 2005, if you missed that post - go here. Here's an excerpt of what I saw,

Because it is the soul the despot wants to put in chains. The despot wants to put the soul in shackles. "You are free not to think. Think as I do".

The Truth Inspires Fear".

"Europe overflows with the witch hunts.... hits any one going against Islam. It overflows the with  New Inquisition. Trying to muzzle. Oh yes, like your Ward Churchills, your Noam Chomskys, your Louis Farrakhans and your Michael Moore's etc. TRAITORS! against which all antidotes seem to fail. Combined Neo nazi islamo fascism" [Atlas note: Fallaci spit these names out with such repulsion and utter contempt........riveting]

The Deaf remain the deaf, the blind remain the blind and both of them end up with ............brand of shame.

Islam has no sense of justice. The crime? The crime of opinion. A crime now disguised as re-education of Islam. Religious racism xenophobia.

Like love, hate belongs to  human nature. Should there be a penal code for the persecution for "hate"? Can we judge? Yes! It can be judged but only on a moral basis. For instance the moral basis of religion, the Christian religion, is based on love, not on a political basis or a criminal basis..........."It grants me the right to love who I want but also the right to hate who I want."

On August 27, 2005, Fallaci had a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI at Castel Gandolfo with whom she found a kindred spirit and whom she believes understands the mortal threat faced by Christianity by the evil of Islamofascism. The Pope loves her work. "I feel less alone when I read the books of Ratzinger." I had asked Ms. Fallaci whether there was any contemporary leader she admired, and Pope Benedict XVI was evidently a man in whom she reposed some trust. "I am an atheist, and if an atheist and a pope think the same things, there must be something true. It's that simple! There must be some human truth here that is beyond religion." More here

Fallaci claims to be neither left nor right. She despises the left for the obvious reasons and holds the right in contempt for being weak. For not taking a hard stand and making the tough choices.

"Don't believe in a dialog with Islam. That's a naivete. It can only be a monologue. They do not believe in pluralism. There is no such thing as a "moderate Islam" and a Radical Islam. There is only one Islam."
I too believe this as much as it pains me to say it. I would like nothing better to believe that there is a side we can do business with, talk to. But that is self deluding.

Fallaci:"The real enemy is Islam and the most catastrophic threat is immigration not terror. It is immigration. And they do not integrate in Europe. Maybe in the USA but not in Europe. Those riots in France are a result of that very thing". The Chinese, Vietnamese etc immigrants are not rioting and tearing down the very fabric of society.

They [The Islamists] are very patient. And Clever.

This war needs boldness.

"WAKE UP WAKE UP. WE ARE AT WAR. WAR HAS BEEN DECLARED ON THE WEST AND WE MUST FIGHT. One or the other must perish."
And while it was painfully clear she was preaching to the converted, it was also painful that the choir was so small.

Flemish politician, and a leader in the Vlaams Belang party of Belgium, Filip Dewinter, delivered a sterling speech at a memorial for the late Orianna Fallaci, in Firenze last weekend.

Oriana Fallaci was an Italian journalist who passed away two years ago, who became famous for her interviews with a host of international celebrities, such as Henry Kissinger, the Shah of Iran and the Ayatollah Khomeini, etc.. She is also famous for her criticisms of the Pope and the Catholic Church, but also for her views on Islam, and on the present day politics of Europe that she saw as promoting its own colonization and Islamization by Muslim immigrants.

Filip Dewinter has drawn fire from every quarter for his views on Islam and an unfettered open ended immigration policy by the political mandarins in the higher echelons of power in both (the artificial construct) Belgium and on the EU level. Fallaci's insight on what is at stake for the Europe's future, is as relevant today as when she wrote and spoke about it herself. Don't let the multiculturalists fool you, it has never been about race or ethnicity, but about the threat of Islam's monoculture which Dewinter correctly describes as a "stagnant pool".

Highly ironic don't you think, that European multiculturalists are championing diversity with a policy that focuses on its own colonization by a people who cling to a monoculture ideology.(Read= no tolerance for others). KGS

If you read any interview, read this one. Bat Yeor, prescient, brilliant scholar who warned us over a decade ago of the coming caliphate in the seminal, groundbreaking work EURABIA (plagiarized by the most revered.).  When I first became aware of the Islamic threat (the first month I started blogging) I went to see  Yeor speak at Columbia University- I asked her, "what can we do, what can I do?" Is not the juridical conflict between shari'a law and European laws a slow-ticking bomb?

Bat Ye'or - It is true that we use the same words: justice, peace... But in shari'a, the law of Muslims, peace means submission, above all. Therefore Arab countries will not be able to envisage peace until Israel is subjugated. The concept of women's rights, of simply Human Rights, is different. There is a real antagonism between the two cultures for which I see no solution. Everything in the non-Muslim world is founded on separation of powers and democracy while in shari'a it is first and foremost the primacy of religious law. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a drop in the bucket in the aims of the of the organization of the Islamic Conference that seeks universal Islamization and the establishment of a planetary caliphate. The subversion of the universities, of the media, of the churches, the politics of compromise, of concessions will eventually result in the United States following the lead of Europe in the submission to Islam.

André Darmon - Do you think it would be justified for Israel to demand, as representative of the Jewish people, compensation for the real expulsions and the forced departures of the Jews from Arab lands?

Bat Ye'or - Completely! The Jews of Arab lands and the Jews of East Jerusalem, to take a local example, were chased out by the Arabs. You mustn't forget that during all the Israeli-Arab wars, the Palestinians always took the side of the Arab coalitions while the Jews in Arab countries always showed allegiance to their adopted country and did not join the enemies of the Arab countries.

André Darmon - Do you think you have completed your work on dhimmitude, both historical and present-day, and do you have another intellectual project on the books?

Bat Ye'or - First of all, I owed it to myself to relate the end, the death of a community, that of the Egyptian Jews, which I saw first hand. Dhimmitude is indeed my life's work but today it is still alive in the world when we look at, for example, the enslavement of Christians in Africa. But above all, I would have liked to be a novelist, because my experiences allowed me to meet exceptional people, situations of a an astonishing psychological depth, testimonials of great beauty, that would be material for a novel. That will be my next project, an historical novel.

Oriana Fallaci's interrogations of leaders such as Kissinger and Qaddafi make today's big-name interviewers look like powder puffs. Wondering when the questions got so soft, the author recounts his last visit with the tempestuous Italian journalist, who died in September, and her last—never published—scoop, a sit-down with the Pope.

Here is an excerpt from an interview with what our media culture calls a "world leader":

Dan Rather: Mr. President, I hope you will take this question in the spirit in which it's asked. First of all, I regret that I do not speak Arabic. Do you speak any … any English at all?
Saddam Hussein (through translator): Have some coffee.
Rather: I have coffee.
Hussein (through translator): Americans like coffee.
Rather: That's true. And this American likes coffee.

Oriana Fallaci: When I try to talk about you, here in Tehran, people lock themselves in a fearful silence. They don't even dare pronounce your name, Majesty. Why is that?
The Shah: Out of an excess of respect, I suppose.
Fallaci: I'd like to ask you: if I were an Iranian instead of an Italian, and lived here and thought as I do and wrote as I do, I mean if I were to criticize you, would you throw me in jail?
The Shah: Probably.

It's a great read in, of all places, Vanity Fair - here. Fallaci is a hero of mine and I was fortunate to see her in one of her last appearances here. And while Hitchens doesn't agree with her rage against Islamism, I do.

Oriana Fallaci, my Hero, Passes Away

     “I leave shreds of my soul on every experience.” - Oriana Fallaci

And so she did. She left shreds of her soul on my soul. I loved that woman.

Oriana passed away  in her beloved Firenze (which she said was destroyed and stolen by the barbarians.) My heart is broken. A warrior in the fight against militant Islam. G-d bless her soul.

Phyllis Chelser pointed out to me that despite Fallaci selling millions of books, she was not heroized by the Italian intellectual establishment who turned against her (and in her view became “fascists”.) She could not risk returning to either Italy or Switzerland due to the Islamic lawsuits against her which might have meant her imprisonment upon landing.

Europe is dead and Fallaci fought to revive the corpse.

The last time I saw Fallaci was at her last public appearance. David Horowitz  of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture and Editor in Chief of FrontPageMag  had presented Fallaci with the Anne Taylor award

I invite you, then, on this day of sadness and loss, to pay tribute to Oriana. There is no way we can make up for what we have lost in her. But the best way we can pay tribute to Oriana is by becoming Oriana. Let there be a hundred new Orianas today, a thousand new passionate and articulate and absolutely unbowed defenders of Western culture and civilization, with a fine contempt for all the many weapons of physical and psychological intimidation that the jihadists and their non-Muslim allies and tools in the Western media and government establishments use to try to silence and discredit us.

Buy her books. Give them to your friends and coworkers. Explain to them why she said -- as is quoted in the obituary linked above -- that "Europe becomes more and more a province of Islam, a colony of Islam." Explain to them why that matters for so much that they hold dear. Enlist them also in the anti-jihad resistance.

And when we prevail, we will be able to memorialize her fittingly, as a light that shone in our darkest days.

May her memory be eternal.

STAND WITH FALLACI OR FALL FOR ANYTHING

I am sure you have seen this monkey running on my left sidebar the past week. If you haven't clicked on it, do it now  and sign the petition. Stand with Fallaci, for all of our sake's.

Judge Armando Grasso of Bergamo acknowledged a suit against Oriana Fallaci filed by the president of Muslim Union of Italy. On June 6th the trial against a journalist and a publicist over insult of Islam by statements made in her book "The force of reason" will start. We want to express our concern about the decision made by the judge of Bergamo, since such practices can lead to restrictions of freedom of speech in the realm of European democracy with human rights being its largest achievement.

We believe that freedom of speech is a universal value and should not fall within political, cultural or religious interests. Oriana Fallaci has been fighting for the freedom of expression in her work as a journalist throughout her whole life. As we intend to protect the freedom of speech we want to express our solidarity with Oriana Fallaci. Being aware of contentiousness of her latest statements, we still stand against the trial which is infringing the freedom of expression.

Fallaci on Trial for Speaking Truth to Power

I predict that the only sound you'll hear coming from the left is deafening silence. The left abandoned true free speech some time ago. A pity, really. There was a time when even the most despicable communist or child molester could count on help from the ACLU to defend his rights.

UPDATE: FALLACI TRIAL DELAYED UNTL THE 26TH

The trial opened Monday in Bergamo, Italy, and quickly was adjourned, according to the Associated Press. It is set to resume June 26. The 75-year-old Fallaci, who also suffers from cancer, faces a possible three-year prison term.

This is the first time a judge has ordered a trial for "defamation of Islam," and some other judges are concerned.

Some intellectuals in her home country also have expressed contempt toward Fallaci. A Milan art gallery featured a portrait of a decapitated Fallaci in a recent exhibit of Giuseppe Veneziano's "American Beauty," a series of paintings designed to highlight the "weakness and perversity of the American way of life." Spencer calls the display an illustration of the "deep affinity between the Left and the forces of global jihad."

The brain damaged New Yorker (the once great, venerable, brilliantly written instittution turned lefty terror enabling tool) has an nterview with Orianna Fallaci here. It is unworthy of Fallaci and her work, and while Maragret Talbot tempered her contempt, Fallaci's much needed message was marginalized  and dishonestly portrayed. I hated it. Talbot's pull quotes from Fallaci's work were the ones that sounded worst out of context. It kicks off with

“Yesterday, I was hysterical,” the Italian journalist and novelist Oriana Fallaci said. She was telling me a story about a local dog owner and the liberties he’d allowed his animal to take in front of Fallaci’s town house, on the Upper East Side. Big mistake. “I no longer have the energy to get really angry, like I used to,” she added. It called to mind what the journalist Robert Scheer said about Fallaci after interviewing her for Playboy, in 1981: “For the first time in my life, I found myself feeling sorry for the likes of Khomeini, Qaddafi, the Shah of Iran, and Kissinger—all of whom had been the objects of her wrath—the people she described as interviewing ‘with a thousand feelings of rage.’ ”

So you get the flavuh of how they paint her.

I reqeusted an intervew with Fallaci months ago but I am not ginormous enough.  But thes mainstream media  pieces do Fallaci little good to advance the  cause of exposing Islam and the gravity their intentions.

The Bullshit about Bin Laden

Not surprising to hear the Saudis giving voice to the Democratic party's tactic of distraction and deception;

Of course I want to see Bin Laden hung by his balls but this war is so much bigger than Bin Laden,that it is largely a symbolic kill. And that is what we should be talking about, this world war, and talking of it -constantly. Bin Laden and his hatchet men are merely the tip of the latest manifestation of Islam's war against the West.

The enemy is not one guy, or a handful of nuts. The enemy is the millions cheering after 9/11. Orianna Fallaci said  in The Rage and The Pride (written right after 9/11);

From Afghanistan to Sudan, from Palestine to Pakistan, from Malaysia to Iran, from Egypt to Iraq [before we removed the butcher Hussein], from Algeria to Senegal, from Syria to Kenya, from Libya to Chad, from Lebanon to Morocco, from Indonesia to Yemen, from Saudi Arabia to Somalia, the hate for the West swells like a fire fed by the wind. And the followers of Islamic Fundamentalism multiply like protozoa of a cell which splits to become two cells then four then eight the sixteen then thirty two to infinity.

You who are not aware only have to

look at the images that TV brings us every day. The multitudes that impregnate the streets of Islamabad, the squares of Nairobi, the mosques of Tehran. The ferocious faces, the threatening fists. The fires that burn the American flag and the photos of Bush.

TV reporter interviewing old man in Nairobi;

Reporter: "Who is, for you, Osama Bin Laden?"

""A hero, our hero."

Reporter:"And what happens if he dies?"

"We find another one," the old man answered, still joyfully. In other words, the one who guides them is only the tip of the iceberg.

Thus, the real protagonist of this war is not Bin Laden. This is a war which is designed to destroy our civilization. Our way of life. The way we live, laugh, love, dress, read.

Saudi Arabia weighing in on capturing Osama, one of their own Wahhabists is laughable.  Saudi Arabia where anyone with a Bible in hand or a cross around his neck was (and is) treated like a scum to be put to death.

How dare that decrepit "medieval feud which enslaves us with its fucking oil"? More Saudi oppression here.

And the Democrats calling for Bin Laden's capture as though that puts an end to the latest  violent battle in the centuries long war is idiotic. And they are taking the American people for morons.

The Democrats are wrong. Dead wrong.

UPDATE: Many Arabs Favor Nuclear Iran - Jonathan Wright
Some Arabs, mainly outside the Gulf, are positively enthusiastic about Iran's nuclear program, even if it acquires nuclear weapons. The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest opposition group, said this week it saw no harm in Iran developing nuclear arms. Analysts said they detected a surprising level of sympathy and support for Iran in the region. "Some think the Iranians are on the way to acquiring it (nuclear weapons capability) and are quite excited," said Hesham Kassem, editor of the independent Cairo newspaper Al Masry Al Youm. Mohamed el-Sayed Said, deputy director of the Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, a Cairo think tank, said: "People are very, very warm about it (Iran's nuclear program)." (Reuters)

It is semantics. I am the pacifist. I want to live free or die. It is clear to me the battle we face is for  freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and anyone that infringes upon that is declaring war. Turn the other cheek? And then what? 

Past generations have fought the battle of ideas and won. Freedom triumphed. Every generation must fight their battle for freedom, this is ours.

Oriana Fallaci in her brilliant new book, The Force of Reason states it plainly,, the force of reason as it were, the true nature of war;

If you ponder a little, you conclude that every deed of ours is an act of war. Each of our actions is a form of war waged against someone or something. Professional and political rivalry, for instance, are a form of war. Elections are a form of war. Competition in all of its facets is a form of war. And certain sports are full blown war. Including soccer which I have never liked because the sight of 22 guys stealing a ball from each other, kicking and kneeing each other, kicking and kneeing each other, disturbs me deeply. Fallaci's Crime: Thought, Reason

The new Fallaci book, treatise really,  is a MUST READ, yesterday. We must put it on the bookshelves of our children and our left-wing-war-loving (always under the guise of peace) professors.

The censure and legal proceedings against Fallaci in Eurabia is incomprehensible. It is beyond the grasp of the American mind.

I mean Switzerland. That Switzerland where the sons of Allah are now more numerous and more arrogant than at Mecca. And where in 1995 the Article 261b of the Criminal Code was written for their benefit. (The Article which allows a Muslim immigrant to win any ideological or private lawsuit by invoking religious racism and racial discrimination. [As in]    "He- didn't- -chase-me- -because- -I'm- -a- thief-  -but- because- I'm- a- Muslim"

Quoting the Article 261b, in fact, through the Swiss Embassy in Rome in November 2002 the Berne Federal Office of Justice [oh these names, these euphemisms -Atlas]  dared to ask the Italian government to extradite me or to open legal proceedings against me for the content [of her book] The Rage and The Pride. Proceedings requested by Muslim groups like the Islamic Center of Berne, the Somali Association of Geneva, the SOS Racism of Lausanne and Islamic immigrants living in the town of Neuchatel.[...]

Judgments, they said, sustained by ideas which "endanger public peace [that fucking word again, they use that word like a $2 whore - Atlas] and generate hate among those who believe in the clash of civilizations".

The request was denied because the Italian constitution guarantees the right to free thought but what was even more incredulous was this;

[...] Switzerland is not the only country where I risk to end behind bars. Most of Europe, in fact, has become a possible threat. Do you know why? Because the European Union exercises a perversion called European Arrest Warrant. Of course the sick irony is Fallaci has been indicted by a judge in her native Italy under provisions of the Italian Penal Code which proscribe the "vilipendio," or "vilification," of "any religion admitted by the state."  And so she resides in the states.

Interestingly enough, Fallaci seemed perplexed that a leftist Jewish association  "Licra" supported a trial against her in Paris. A trial promoted for xenophobia, blasphemy, instigation to hatred of Islam. She should not have been shocked. These Jews here and here are Jews in name only, I assure you, it's right vs. wrong left.

The book is riveting. It's truth unadorned. So let this serve as a warning, I  continue to excerpt this book, and Cassandra will not be talking to the wind. EURABIA UPDATE: Infidel Bloggers Alliance wrote in tonight that the Telegraph relieved editor Sarah Sands of her duties as editor after only nine months. Now she is claiming that she was released because of an article that she published unfavorable to Islam

Sarah Sands was fired as editor of the Sunday Telegraph on March 7, 2006.
Now she claims that it was because she published an "Islamophobic" article... which was later yanked!

Sarah Sands will be replaced by Patience Wheatcroft as editor of The Sunday Telegraph.

The Sunday Herald reported that Sarah Sands had been removed but gave no reason for her departure from the Telegraph.

You gotta love the left, the self appointed left wing police. They won't carry a book by one of the great courageous voices of our time.  Oriana Fallaci!  Fallaci, who has been screaming into the noxious void of Eurabia (along with Bat Ye'or), warning of the coming rage of  war by Radical Islamofascists and yet bookstores are attempting to silence her by not carrying her book. Bennish, that two-bit tool,  goes back to teaching High School on Monday, goes back  to influencing and swaying fine young minds with his ignorant commie diatribes but no Fallaci. Just savor the absurd details of this for a minute. City Lights [San Francisco book store] has a long and proud history of supporting banned authors - owner Lawrence Ferlinghetti was indicted (and acquitted) for obscenity in 1957 for selling Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," and a photo in the store's main room shows Ferlinghetti proudly posing next to a sign reading, "BANNED BOOKS." City Lights also has been featured in the ACLU's annual Banned Books Week events.

Yet the store won't carry Fallaci - who is being sued in Italy for insulting religion because of her latest book, and also continues to fight the good fight against those who think that the appropriate response to offensive books and cartoons is violent rioting.

It's particularly repugnant that someone who fought against actual fascism in World War II should be deemed a fascist by a snotty San Francisco clerk.

Strangest of all is the scenario of such a person's disliking an author for defending Western civilization against radical Islam - when one of the first things those poor persecuted Islamists would do, if they ever (Allah forbid) came to power in the United States, is crush suspected homosexuals like him beneath walls.

Yet those most oppressed by political Islam continue to defend it, even (perhaps especially) in the wake of the Danish cartoon furor. I've heard that in Europe this phenomenon is now called the Copenhagen Syndrome and that some of its arguments really are amazing.

From the book, Immortality, author, Milan Kundera writes,

"...who is the pioneer of modern journalism? Not Hemingway who wrote of his experiences in the trenches, not Orwell who spent a year of his life with the Parisian poor, not Egon Erwin Kisch the expert on Prague prostitutes, but Oriana Fallaci who in the years 1969 to 1972 published a series of interviews with the most famous politicians of the time. Those interviews were more than mere conversations; they were duels. Before the powerful politicians realized that they were fighting under unequal conditions--for she was allowed to ask questions but they were not--they were already on the floor of the ring, KO'ed."

This evening David Horowitz [his introductory speech here] of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture and Editor in Chief of FrontPageMag  presented Fallaci with the Anne Taylor award (Anne Taylor was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel - no joke). The speech will not be made public or published as Fallaci wants it for her last book she is currently writing. She said she "hopes her book helps her die a little less when I do die". And although she was supposed to receive this award at the Biltmore in February there was serious doubt she would make it..........The following remarks are from my fierce scribbling. In a word, Fallaci was wild. Smart determined, and intent on getting the message out there that we are underestimating the enemy. Playing nice guy, playing PC, killing all signs of religion (ie Christmas) will be the end of us.

"I do not believe the West will win."  Her fatalism is pure and unashamed.

The crowd to my surprise, was small. A peculiar mix of concerned, scholarly,  erudite and  moneyed. Not what I would call a "sexy" crowd (as in passionate), but Fallaci had more sex appeal and passion than the whole of the city.

I was fortunate enough to sit with Richard Poe of FrontPageMag and his lovely wife, and to my left Susan, a quick witted down-to-earth lawyer (!) who writes sporadically for the NRO who was joined by her equally involved hub. Susan just sent me this excellent NRO piece on Fallaci, read it before continuing on.

And to add to my delight I had  the great fortune to spent some precious, delicious time with Phylis Chesler. I shall  interview her later this week on her new book, The Death of Feminism

Because it is the soul the despot wants to put in chains. The despot wants to put the soul in shackles. "You are free not to think. Think as I do".

I had asked Ms. Fallaci whether there was any contemporary leader she admired, and Pope Benedict XVI was evidently a man in whom she reposed some trust. Fallaci claims to be neither left nor right. She despises the left for the obvious reasons and holds the right in contempt for being weak. For not taking a hard stand and making the tough choices.

"Don't believe in a dialog with Islam. That's a naivete. It can only be a monologue. They do not believe in pluralism. There is no such thing as a "moderate Islam" and a Radical Islam. There is only one Islam."

I too believe this as much as it pains me to say it. I would like nothing better to believe that there is a side we can do business with, talk to. But that is self deluding.

This war needs boldness.

In her mid-70s, stricken with a cancer that, for the moment, permits only the consumption of liquids -one of the most renowned journalists of the modern era has been indicted by a judge in her native Italy under provisions of the Italian Penal Code which proscribe the "vilipendio," or "vilification," of "any religion admitted by the state."

In her case, the religion deemed vilified is Islam, and the vilification was perpetrated, apparently, in a book she wrote last year -- and which has sold many more than a million copies all over Europe -- called "The Force of Reason." Its astringent thesis is that the Old Continent is on the verge of becoming a dominion of Islam, and that the people of the West have surrendered themselves fecklessly to the "sons of Allah." So, in a nutshell, Oriana Fallaci faces up to two years' imprisonment for her beliefs -- which is one reason why she has chosen to stay put in New York. Let us give thanks for the First Amendment.

Ms. Fallaci speaks in a passionate growl: "Europe is no longer Europe, it is 'Eurabia,' a colony of Islam, where the Islamic invasion does not proceed only in a physical sense, but also in a mental and cultural sense. Servility to the invaders has poisoned democracy, with obvious consequences for the freedom of thought, and for the concept itself of liberty."

From the book, Immortality, author, Milan Kundera writes,

"...who is the pioneer of modern journalism? Not Hemingway who wrote of his experiences in the trenches, not Orwell who spent a year of his life with the Parisian poor, not Egon Erwin Kisch the expert on Prague prostitutes, but Oriana Fallaci who in the years 1969 to 1972 published a series of interviews with the most famous politicians of the time. Those interviews were more than mere conversations; they were duels. Before the powerful politicians realized that they were fighting under unequal conditions--for she was allowed to ask questions but they were not--they were already on the floor of the ring, KO'ed."

This evening David Horowitz [his introductory speech here] of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture and Editor in Chief of FrontPageMag  presented Fallaci with the Anne Taylor award (Anne Taylor was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel - no joke). The speech will not be made public or published as Fallaci wants it for her last book she is currently writing. She said she "hopes her book helps her die a little less when I do die". And although she was supposed to receive this award at the Biltmore in February there was serious doubt she would make it..........The following remarks are from my fierce scribbling. In a word, Fallaci was wild. Smart determined, and intent on getting the message out there that we are underestimating the enemy. Playing nice guy, playing PC, killing all signs of religion (ie Christmas) will be the end of us.

"I do not believe the West will win."  Her fatalism is pure and unashamed.

The crowd to my surprise, was small. A peculiar mix of concerned,  scholarly,  erudite and  moneyed. Not what I would call a "sexy" crowd (as in passionate), but Fallaci had more sex appeal and passion than the whole of the city.
I was fortunate enough to sit with Richard Poe of FrontPageMag and his lovely wife, and to my left Susan, a quick witted down-to-earth lawyer (!) who writes sporadically for the NRO who was joined by her equally involved hub. Susan just sent me this excellent NRO piece on Fallaci, read it before continuing on.

And to add to my delight I had  the great fortune to spent some precious, delicious time with Phyllis Chesler. I shall  interview her later this week on her new book, The Death of Feminism

Oriana Fallaci -  frail, tiny hit that podium running. She looked up at us and said "you are my comrade in arms. Our opponents are leftists. Conservative are too genteel. You are warriors and warriors can not get tired."

"The secret of happiness is freedom, the secret of freedom is courage". In describing despotism, Fallaci said the despot ignores the body and attacks the soul. Because it is the soul the despot wants to put in chains. The despot wants to put the soul in shackles. "You are free not to think. Think as I do".

Combined Neo nazi islamo fascism" [Atlas note: Fallaci spit these names out with such repulsion and utter contempt........riveting]

The Deaf remain the deaf, the blind remain the blind and both of them end up with ............brand of shame.

Islam has no sense of justice. The crime? The crime of opinion. A crime now disguised as re-education of Islam. Religious racism xenophobia.

Like love, hate belongs to  human nature. Should there be a penal code for the persecution for "hate"? Can we judge? Yes! It can be judged but only on a moral basis. For instance the moral basis of religion, the Christian religion, is based on love, not on a political basis or a criminal basis..........."It grants me the right to love who I want but also the right to hate who I want."

"It is my sacrosanct right! Those that hate me try to silence me with penal codes."

"And the West directs a hate towards itself. The West has lost its spirituality.It stands silent in the slander of Islam. "The censure of Europe".
"Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder," the historian Arnold Toynbee wrote.

On August 27, 2005, Fallaci had a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI at Castel Gandolfo with whom she found a kindred spirit and whom she believes understands the mortal threat faced by Christianity by the evil of Islamofascism. The Pope loves her work. "I feel less alone when I read the books of Ratzinger." I had asked Ms. Fallaci whether there was any contemporary leader she admired, and Pope Benedict XVI was evidently a man in whom she reposed some trust. "I am an atheist, and if an atheist and a pope think the same things, there must be something true. It's that simple! There must be some human truth here that is beyond religion." More here

Fallaci claims to be neither left nor right. She despises the left for the obvious reasons and holds the right in contempt for being weak. For not taking a hard stand and making the tough choices.

"Don't believe in a dialog with Islam. That's a naivete. It can only be a monologue. They do not believe in pluralism. There is no such thing as a "moderate Islam" and a Radical Islam. There is only one Islam."
I too believe this as much as it pains me to say it. I would like nothing better to believe that there is a side we can do business with, talk to. But that is self deluding.

Fallaci:"The real enemy is Islam and the most catastrophic threat is immigration not terror. It is immigration. And they do not integrate in Europe. Maybe in the USA but not in Europe. Those riots in France are a result of that very thing". The Chinese, Vietnamese etc immigrants are not rioting and tearing down the very fabric of society.

They [The Islamists] are very patient. And Clever.

This war needs boldness.

"WAKE UP WAKE UP. WE ARE AT WAR. WAR HAS BEEN DECLARED ON THE WEST AND WE MUST FIGHT. One or the other must perish."

and so she has spoken. And while it was painfully clear she was preaching to the converted, it was also painful that the choir was so small.
