Who Caused the Arab Refugee Problem? Refugee: Arab Leaders Told Us to Flee in 1948 - Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook
In another corroboration by an Arab refugee that it was Arab leaders who were responsible for the flight of Arabs from the new State of Israel in 1948, an elderly woman, Asmaa Jabir Balasimah Um Hasan, told the PA newspaper Al-Ayyam on May 16, 2006, that it was Arab leaders and not Israel who told her and her neighbors to flee, for tactical military reasons. "They told us: 'The Jews attacked our region and it is better to evacuate the village and return after the battle is over.'"
    This confirms earlier statements that have appeared in the PA press. On April 30, 1999, an Arab viewer called PA TV and quoted his father and grandfather, complaining that in 1948 the Arab District Officer ordered all Arabs to leave Palestine or be labeled traitors. On March 19, 2001, columnist Fuad Abu Higla wrote in the official PA daily Al Hayat Al Jadida of Arab leaders "in the year of 1948, who forced us to leave, on the pretext of clearing the battlefields of civilians." It is well-known among Palestinians that Arab leaders bear responsibility for the mass flight of Arabs from Israel in 1948, and were the cause of the "refugee" problem. (Palestinian Media Watch)

Summabitches Vote to Boycott Israel Universities

Academic Anti-Semitism In Britain According to The National Review Online , the leading scholars at Britain's most prestigious universities are boycotting the work of Israeli academics in an attempt to lobby peace in the Middle East.

More than 4,900 of you answered our call to protest an anti-Israel boycott proposed by NATFHE, a British teacher's union.

I'm sorry to say that despite this overwhelming show of support for the Jewish state, NATFHE this weekend passed a resolution recommending that its members boycott Israeli academics. It is a bigoted measure that violates every principle of fair play and academic freedom. From Stand with Israel, mobilizing Christian support for Israel - bless these folks.

Phyillis Chesler writes a devastating essay on Academic Anti-Semitism,  Boycotting Israeli scholars in Britain’s universities here at the NRO;

The British have a marred history in their relations with the Jews. They murdered and expelled them from their island in the 13th century, and they refused to allow ships filled with Jews in flight from Hitler to land in British “Palestine” in the 20th century.

Although Britain once colonized the entire Arab world, British poets and adventurers romanticized Arab men as nobly and sexily savage. British diplomats and businessmen overlooked Arab barbarism for the sake of oil. Politically correct British intellectuals romanticized Arabs in another way, as the “victims” of European colonialism—for which they blamed, you guessed it, the Jews and the Jewish state. Sometimes, such Stalinized and Palestinianized British thinkers managed to note that Arabs were ruled by cruel despots who impoverished and terrorized their own people—but they blamed it on the American CIA.

In 2000, the Arab League, Iran, and the Palestinians unleashed a savage and lethal intifada against Israeli civilians, 80 percent of whom are Jews whose parents and grand-parents survived pogroms, the Holocaust, mass expulsion from Arab lands and at least five or six wars of self-defense in Israel. From the fall of 2000 until the late spring of 2003, Israelis experienced something akin to 9/11 almost every month, sometimes every other week. This is why they built the security fence, called by some the “apartheid wall.” Allegedly civilized “chatterers” characterized Israelis under siege as “worse than Nazis” whose “genocidal policies” justified the rash of Palestinian serial suicide killings. Such academics did not condemn the exterminationist Islamist propaganda which turned countless adolescents into brainwashed, brutal killers.

British academics responded to the military, terrorist, and propaganda war against the Jews by launching divestment and boycott campaigns against Israel in general and against Israeli academics in particular. Thus, in 2002, 123 British academics published an Open Letter in the London Guardian calling for a “moratorium” on all cultural and research links with Israel. In 2004-2005, the British Association of University Teachers (AUT)—which has never moved to boycott academics from countries such as China, Iran, or Sudan—voted to boycott two Israeli universities for their alleged complicity in their government's military policies. After a tremendous struggle, that vote was overturned.

Similar divestment and boycott campaigns against Israel—and only against Israel—were launched elsewhere. Ford Foundation-funded organizations took part in conferences that demonized Israel and America from the Palestinian point of view. In 2005, the Association of American University Professors (AAUP) found that “the Zionist lobby” exerted a “pernicious” influence against Arabs and Muslims on American campuses. Early in 2006, two professors, Harvard’s Stephen Walt and the University of Chicago’s Charles Mearsheimer heartily agreed. Their shoddy position paper was comprehensively and effectively critiqued, which, in the view of their supporters, proved that the “Zionist lobby” really does rule the world.

A “silent” boycott has already begun in which some British academics have refused to write for Israeli journals and refused to publish or review the work of Israeli academics and creative artists in British journals. In my view, those who do so have effectively cut themselves off from the international community of scholars. According to the president of SPME, Ed Beck, “this boycott offends tolerant and fair-minded people from across the political spectrum.”

The NATHFE boycott motion passed by a vote of 106 to 71 with 21 abstentions.T  This is a very small number, and it may be that they speak for a minority of obsessively like-minded academics. In addition, next week, NATHFE will dissolve and merge with another British union (AUT). At that point, this boycott may no longer legally “count.”

It counts as a propaganda victory for intolerance nonetheless. And it appeases Islamism and bring Europe one step closer to becoming Eurabia—which endangers both America and Israel. Read it all

CUPE on Israel: The Echoes of Dark Evils

The next time labour leaders in Canada want to know why there is such antipathy to their agenda in many quarters, they need look no further than the Canadian Union of Public Employee’s Ontario wing. This past weekend some 896 delegates representing 200,000 workers voted in convention to pass a resolution boycotting Israel, a social democracy with the most unionized political jurisdiction in the world.

With all of labour’s supposed grievances, why the urgency on this issue? Because according to CUPE(Ont.) Israel does not " recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination." Let us put aside the fact that Israel was the only country to recognize the future Arab state of Palestine after partition in 1947; put aside the fact that within one week of the 1967 war when Israel defended itself from invasion by five Arab states and still offered total withdrawal and recognition in return for peace and was greeted with the Arab states’ Khartoum resolution of “No negotiation; no recognition; no peace”; put aside the fact that Israel has recognized Palestinian self-determination at Oslo, at Madrid and at Camp David and been refused each time by Palestinian leadership; what makes this resolution so egregious in nature - such an affront to truth and transparency - is that it comes at a time when the Palestinian Authority’s own President has challenged the Hamas government to renounce violence and recognize Israel or face a referendum. President Abbas’ own actions put the lie to the pretense that this CUPE (Ont.) initiative was done in the tradition of labour’s fight for universal social justice. The Palestinians don’t question Israel’s acceptance of their right to self-determination. They question only their own capacity to manifest it.

It’s time to call a spade a spade. CUPE (Ont.)’s action is, at worst, a primordial example of a hypocrisy unmasked revealing the true face of anti-Zionism as anti-Semitism, and, at best, a knee-jerk Canadian antipathy to any American ally. An antipathy that at its heart is fuelled by a self-doubt driven by a jealousy of others self-belief.

 

US Congressmen Propose Resolution to Recognize Jewish Middle East Refugees

It's about time, I can't imagine what took so long............. all those good folks in Pennsylvania - vote Santorum. Get off your asses and get out the vote for him, he is a mighty mighty man. And Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida? A warrior. Sorry, I can't stand Nadler, too leftarded but I salute him and Lantos on this.

(IsraelNN.com) Four US Senators and four Congressmen, representing both Democrats and Republicans, have introduced landmark resolutions on Middle East refugees in the United States Senate and in the House of Representatives.

The resolutions urge President George Bush to ensure that in all international forums, when the issue of "Middle East refugees" is discussed, representatives of the United States should ensure "that any explicit reference to Palestinian refugees is matched by a similar explicit reference to Jewish and other refugees, as a matter of law and equity."

This bi-partisan effort is being spearheaded by Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA), Norm Coleman (R-MN), Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). On the House side, supporters include Congressmen Tom Lantos (D-CA) , Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and Michael Ferguson (R-NJ). Hat tip Robert D

France: Terrorizing Jews, Police Told not to Intervene

BREAKING NEWS: I am struggling with the translation of this terrible story in Paris, Sunday May 28. In the Jewish district called Le Marais, members of a Black Tribal band, Tribu K, spread terror, police slow to respond...From Metula New Agency and Primo Europe and France Ethos.

Yesterday Sunday, at 5 p.m. 30, thirty members of a sect black which calls openly with violence anti-semite, “Tribe KA”, unloaded in the Street of the Rose trees, the heart of the Jewish district of Paris, armed with bats and other blunt objects.

During twenty minutes, they surveyed the street by intimidating the passers by, and while calling with the brawl: “where is the Bétar? How the Jews come to fight if they dare it! ”.

The Jews of the Street of the Rose trees do not have, naturally, militia deprived at their disposal and were not in a position to answer these provocations. The police force in uniform, called quickly, appeared twenty minutes after the beginning of the event.

The tradesmen reproached to the police officers the slowness of their intervention. These reproaches took a more accusing turn when a senior police officer awkwardly affirmed: “we knew that they were going to come - and in fact, that had been announced on Internet site of the “tribe” - but we had instruction of in top not to intervene”. The community of the Street of the Rose trees, fearing to be badly protected by the police force, then entered in effervescence and started to speak to organize its own militia.

The translation may be forced but the bottom line is the cops knew!  The cops knew the Jews were to be terrorized and were advised not to intervene. So now the Jewish community is going to attempt to organize its own 'militia.'

I asked Nidra Poller about this. She told me to

take a look at the site www.tribuka.com.  Even though you don't understand French, watch the first video for ten or fifteen minutes, and you will see what we are dealing with.  It's the last dregs of negritude, and instead of standing up to the ones who really did oppress Blacks over the centuries, they have chosen Jews as their prime target.  They are in the same gutter as Dieudonné.

The police are now investigating, the mayor of the arrondissement came to show her concern.  But, as reported, when the militia was running up and down the street crying out its murderous rage, the police didn't come.

MORE RIOTING: In related news. Transport Minister Dominique Perben said last night's incidents were a reminder of last November's rioting. "The question of the suburbs is a question for the entire political class," he said on I-tele television this morning. "We must have the courage to look things in the face."  The Islamic riots , mayhem and car burning  are back in France here;

PARIS: Around a hundred youths clashed with French police overnight after setting fire to cars and rubbish bins in a Paris suburb that was the scene of violent riots last November, a local official said today.

Seven police officers were slightly injured and six youths were arrested in a neighbourhood of Seine-Saint-Denis in confrontations that started around 2030 GMT on Monday evening (8.30am NZT Tues), according to a security official from the suburb to the north of the French capital.

The youths began burning cars in reaction to a police operation in which a young man was arrested several hours earlier. Officials said they did not yet know how many cars had been burnt.

There were also incidents in the neighbouring area of Clichy-Sous-Bois, where last year's riots began after two youngsters died while they were apparently fleeing police. In the three weeks of rioting that followed around France, youths clashed with police in poor suburbs which are home to large immigrant populations.

Around 100 youths fought with police and torched cars and rubbish bins in a Paris suburb last night, close to the site of last November's Clichy-Sous-Bois riots.

French media reported that seven police were injured and six youths arrested in the clashes in Montfermeil, in the northern Seine-Saint-Denis region.

Youths wearing masks threw objects at officers and attacked them with baseball bats in the clashes, which began around 8.30pm after the arrest of a young man in a police operation earlier in the day. Police said the violence ended shortly after midnight.

Negative Contingent at Olmert's Speech

In reporting on Israeli PM Olmert's speech to Congress, you noted the presence of a contingent who sat there with their hands folded, refusing to applaud.  You said you would follow up and try to identify them.  Have you made any progress in this yet?

Just for knowing, I have been all over this and still have not come up with any answers. Apparently there was no seating for Olmert's speech, though I think it strange that this six to eight rows of like minded Israel haters all sat together. I have been unable to track down a seating diagram of any kind.

I have not forgotten - many of you have emailed me regarding this question. If there is anyone out there that can assist me I would greatly appreciate it .......... cspan may be my only hope. Buying a copy of their video and zooming in.............

Jew Hunting in Paris, Nazism in Germany

This is not going away no matter how much the French try to pretend it doesn't exist. From my favorite Euro-blog, No Pasaran here;

The natives are restless and they is goin' a huntin'. 'Tribu Ka', composed of Elijah Muhammad wannabees and cheap French knock-offs of the Black Panthers, recently went Jew hunting in Paris and documented their little escapade.

The report starts off talking about Jewish groups' deceptive methods and details the Tribu Ka's expedition into some gyms located in the rue Trévise in Paris -- all this to locate and identify Jewish Defense League members in retribution for some imagined slights supposedly taking place during the recent march in memory of Ilan Halimi, that Jewish cellphone salesman.

The report ends with a warning threat that the Jews will be identified and followed and will be obliged to leave their hiding places like roaches fleeing the light of truth and justice.

It should be noted that 'Tribu Ka' is associated with French comic Dieudonné and are part of the growing anti-Semite axis (including Holocaust negationists) which gravitates around the Théâtre de la Main d'Or, theatre owned and operated by Dieudonné's production company.

Neo-Nazi Violence on the Rise in Germany

With the World Cup just a few weeks away, stories about neo-Nazi violence in Germany are suddenly everywhere. On Monday, new figures suggest that far-right crime in the country is on the rise -- much of it in former East Germany.

Right-wing extremism is on the rise in Germany. Clashes with anti-fascist groups are also increasing. It's hardly the issue that Germany wanted to see in the headlines during the last few weeks before the World Cup kicks off in Munich on June 9. But stories on neo-Nazi violence, suddenly, are everywhere. On Monday, new figures showing a rise in right-wing violence in 2005 poured fuel on the fire.

German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said on Monday he was very worried about the steep rise in far-right crime and appealed to Germans never to look the other way when they see someone being attacked. "There mustn't be any no-go areas in Germany," he told a news conference at which he presented the 2005 report of the domestic intelligence service, the Bundesverfassungsschutz. (hat tip Daryl)

As you know, in just a few days Britain's largest university teacher's union will vote on a proposed resolution to boycott Israel. The NATFHE (National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education) is telling its members that Israeli policies are "apartheid policies," calls Israel's security fence an "exclusion wall" and accuses Israel of "discriminatory educational practices."

Last year, when another group of British academics proposed an Israel boycott, your emails to leadership helped turn the tide in Israel's favor. And we need your help again today.

Iranian students set up fund dedicated to Israel's destruction.

Encouraged by regime, students call fund 'symbolic move' in support of Palestinians Associated Press

A group of Iranian students announced Sunday at an event attended by a high-ranking member of the elite Revolutionary Guard that they were setting up a fund to destroy Israel.

Although the initiative's name - "The Student Fund for Demolishing Israel" - brings to mind President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's call last year to destroy the Jewish state, an organizer said its goal was to support the cash-strapped Palestinian government.

Some 300 students attended the event hosted by a group calling itself the Movement of Justice-seeking Students at the University of Tehran.

"This is a symbolic move to attract public attention to the Palestinian cause at a time when Western countries have halted financial support to the Hamas-led government," Javad Miri, the group's spokesman, told The Associated Press.

The first rocket was fired by Palestinian terrorists from northern Gaza shortly after 7:30 AM, landing at the Gevim Junction just south of Sderot. Two women were treated at the site for shock.

The drama being played out between Hamas and the West grows stranger by the minute, exposing the cultural toxins that are weakening our resolve in the fight against jihad. The murderous aims of Hamas are clear, as their spokesmen and sympathizers do not hesitate to remind us. Nor is their commitment to jihad against Israel and the West a minority obsession of a lunatic fringe. Just recently the religious leaders of several Muslim countries issued a statement of support for the goal of Hamas to drive Israel into the sea: “The right to historical Palestine is an eternal right, and no soul can relinquish it, neither in an agreement, a document or a promise.” They added that nobody can ban “jihad for the liberation of Palestine” or “damn the jihadists.”

And contradicting those Westerners who still believe the whole crisis is about Palestinian nationalist aspirations, a Sudanese cleric said, “Palestine is a religious issue, not just a political one, and affects all Muslims.” A representative for Hamas agreed: “This meeting has reverted the Palestinian issue to its rightful depth as an Arab and Islamic issue.” The upshot of the declaration is that there will be no “land for peace,” no recognition of Israel’s right to exist, no signing on to “roadmaps” or other desperate Western attempts to avoid facing one simple fact: Israel is the beleaguered Western salient in the frontlines of the war against jihad.

Yet even as Hamas and the religious leadership of Muslim nations tell us their intentions, we Westerners refuse to listen. Instead of facing the existential threat to our way of life, we continue to wring our hands over the hardships of the Palestinian people, with the result that our refusal to allow Western money into the hands of murderers gets ever more wobbly. Despite the fact that Hamas was democratically elected, which means that a critical mass of Palestinian Arabs agree with Hamas’ aims, we seem to think the Palestinians are somehow being held hostage by some alien ruling clique. Having created the myth of large numbers of Palestinians willing to accept Israel and merely wanting a state of their own, we ignore the mountains of evidence — the Palestinians dancing in the streets after 9/11, the ubiquitous posters idolizing homicide bombers, the preschool pageants replete with three-year-olds wrapped in toy explosive belts — suggesting that such moderates are few. Nor will we accept that years of support for the corrupt thug Arafat, and now for the terrorist faction Hamas, reveal a widespread willingness on the part of many Palestinians to endure political, economic, and social dysfunction as an acceptable price to pay for holding on to their bitter hatred of Israel.

The most absurd response to the cut-off of funds to these terrorists, who want to destroy not just Israel but us as well, is that we are “punishing” the Palestinians for their democratic choice. We forget that the flip side to democratic choice is responsibility for that choice. During our own Civil War, Southerners made a democratic choice to secede from the Union and test their right to do so by force of arms. The Confederate soldiers in the field were sustained in their fight by the moral and material support of their families back home, who wrote them letters of encouragement, held public rallies and celebrations honoring them, and worked on farms and factories providing them with food and weapons.

General Sherman understood this dynamic between soldier and civilian, and conceived his March to the Sea as a psychological as well as military action: “I propose to demonstrate the vulnerability of the South and make its inhabitants feel that war and individual ruin are synonymous terms,” he wrote. So too in a letter to the mayor of Atlanta: “Now that war comes home to you, you feel very different. You deprecate its horrors, but did not feel them when you sent carloads of soldiers and ammunition, and molded shells and shot, to carry war into Kentucky and Tennessee, to desolate the homes of hundreds and thousands of good people who only asked to live in peace at their old homes, and under the Government of their inheritance.”

As hard as life has been for some Palestinians because of their support for terrorists, continuing Western aid over the years, and continuing Western restraint of Israel at the expense of her citizens, have both propped up Palestinian society just enough to keep Palestinians from feeling the full consequences of their stubborn hatred of Israel and refusal to acknowledge with deeds rather than mere words Israel’s right to exist. So too has the West’s willingness to accept empty declarations and carefully hedged “condemnations” of terrorism on the part of so-called moderates like the terrorist Mahmoud Abbas. After Oslo was followed by the intifada, after the great refusal at Camp David, only the most deluded or naïve could fail to see the duplicity of these protestations routinely contradicted whenever Arafat spoke in Arabic. Agreements and summits and road maps were all mere tactical feints that had nothing to do with the permanent long-term strategic goal of destroying Israel.

Yet here we go again, demanding that a terrorist organization make insincere, tactical statements so we can hang on to our pretense that a Palestinian state will solve the whole crisis, and that Israel’s refusal to sacrifice its citizens and its existence is the prime mover of Muslim discontent with the West. Apparently we didn’t learn our lesson from Arafat and the P.L.O., who did precisely what we are demanding Hamas do: pretend to accept Israel’s right to exist and to abjure terrorism, all the while that the strategic goal of Israel’s destruction continues to be pursued, with terrorism when tactically necessary. So far Hamas refuses to play that rhetorical game. Perhaps they think that with the U.S. engaged in Iraq and confronting a belligerent Iran, they have the opportunity to take a more aggressive tack. And no doubt they are banking on the European instinct for appeasement and its deep-seated dislike of Israel to shake loose the money that will continue to prop them up.

And it seems their gamble will pay off. Fig-leaf mechanisms for getting money to the Palestinians are already in the works. The failure of Hamas to act like a legitimate government will be papered over with Western money, just as the Palestinian Authority’s failure and corruption were. Money being fungible, funds that should go to schools and hospitals and economic development will go to weapons, explosives, and the salaries of armed gangs. The contempt of the jihadists for Westerners, who will subsidize those eager to destroy the West, will grow only more intense, and their conviction that they will ultimately prevail will be held only more firmly.

Noam Chomsky: U.S. A Terrorist Country

Bottom line? Chomsky should not be allowed back into this country. He is an enemy, a traitor. Let his live in Syria, where he belongs and where he would clearly find like minded animals

(IsraelNN.com) American Professor Noam Chomsky recently visited Hizbullah headquarters in Lebanon and said that United States is a terrorist country under its own definitions, according to the terrorist organization Al Manar television network.

Chomsky met with Hizbullah secretary general Hassan Nasrallah and justified its possession of weapons as a deterrent to possible aggression, according to Al Manar and reported by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). He added, "If the U.S. were to stick to the clear and precise definition of terrorism in its code of laws, it would be the leading terrorist state."

Nothing more abhorrent than an American-hating-American or a Jew-hating-Jew.

Jew Hate, America Hate Speeches at UC Irvine

The parade of radical, hateful speakers brought to UC Irvine this week were of the most extremist variety. 
Their insults included "Israel the 4th Reich," "Holocaust in the Holy Land," "Apartheid Israel" etc. Statements made by speakers included historical mythology that continuously demonized Israel with a steady drum beat. StandWithUs staff were there, all week, supporting the local community of students, faculty and community members who chose to stand up to the hatred and misinformation. The last speaker, Imam Abdel Malik Ali, is a firebrand rhetorician who uses street slang to vilify Jews and to rouse his audiences to fight for the victory of Islam in America. “We ain’t gonna lose. We must implement Islam as a totality,” in which “Allah controls every place - the home, the classroom, the science lab, the halls of Congress,” he told a Berkeley MSA conference in 2004. Nor does he insist that this victory for Islam be done peacefully. “In America, you’re mostly fighting with your tongue. But you should also learn how to fight with the sword."His goal is to see Sharia law instituted in America, and he acknowledges that "There will be some poop-butts who will not want to live under sharia law and will leave.”

It is unclear why the MSU invited such guests or how a public University justifies funding their speeches. But it is clear that these speakers will widen the divide between Americans and radical Islamists and between Muslims and Jews and that they represent the ugliest, fringe element in today’s culture wars. The MSU only marginalizes itself-and, unfortunately, Islam— by putting on such programs. Here

IRAN: Jews, Christians Must Wear "Special Badges"

Ahmadinejad has vowed, “To stop Christianity in this country” [i.e., Iran] here and his recent “letter”  to President Bush emulates the jihad war precept (originally formulated by the Muslim prophet Muhammad) of calling infidel powers—often Christian powers—to accept Islam, prior to initiating a jihad war against them. hat tip Andrew.

Make no mistake, this is not about Joooooooos. This is against all non Muslims and non practicing Muslims. The yellow badge is back.

A yellow badge, also referred to as a Jewish badge, is a mandatory mark or a piece of cloth of specific geometric shape, worn on the outer garment in order to distinguish a Jew. Jews in Germany were forced to wear these yellow badges.

The color yellow had been maligned since feudal times. Horses that were yellowish were considered worthless throughout society (as seen in the obsolete phrase, to curry Fauvel, a conventional name of a yellow horse). All other colors were used by knights on their shields, so yellow was left to brand the Jews.

IRAN EYES BADGES FOR JEWS AND CHRISTIANS

Human rights groups are raising alarms over a new law passed by the Iranian parliament that would require the country's Jews and Christians to wear coloured badges to identify them and other religious minorities as non-Muslims."

Iranian expatriates living in Canada yesterday confirmed reports that the Iranian parliament, called the Islamic Majlis, passed a law this week setting a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear almost identical "standard Islamic garments."

The law, which must still be approved by Iran's "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect, also establishes special insignia to be worn by non-Muslims.

Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.hat tip Jay

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has written to Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, protesting the Iranian law and calling on the international community to bring pressure on Iran to drop the measure.

The Presbyterians are calling upon their allies.

A main focus of the conference was encouraging "divestment" (which was also called "morally responsible investment") campaigns against Israel.  Speakers stressed that it was "now more important than ever" for Western sympathizers to move from mere pro-Palestinian pronouncements to such concrete action.  Ateek enthused that movements for Israel divestment were afoot in the Episcopal Church, the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ (UCC), a couple Roman Catholic religious orders, the United Church of Canada, the Methodist Church of Great Britain, and the WCC.  He reported that after the 2004 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) adopted its controversial resolution to divest from selected companies doing business in Israel, Sabeel sent an appeal to other Western church leaders encouraging them to take similar action.  However, Ateek admitted to being greatly worried that churches would back away from divestment under pressure from opponents, as the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was already "under great attack" for its divestment measure.

Who is really under attack here fellas? huh?

UPDATE: Bruce says "Laugh at me all you want, but I keep a bag of jewels and dual-nationality passports for my wife and children to help them if they ever need to and can escape a pogrom here in the United States. UPDATE: Iranian expatriates insist that the "National Uniform Law" authorized by the Iranian parliament a few days ago, which is aimed at getting “Western” style clothing off the streets and advancing more traditional “Islamic” attire, also includes a clause obligating Iranian Jews to wear a yellow ribbon.

Despite a report in a Canadian newpaper that the badge story may not be accurate I will not retract it. Because it is the objective of Iran, the objective of Islam to convert all non Muslims  to Islam or die  (or live as dhimmis.)

Chavez and Livingstone, Dance of Evil

In the continuing alienation of the Brits from America, the grave implications  of which Melanie Phillips could not stress strongly enough yesterday, Ahmadinejad's lover, Hugo Chavez met with know Jew hater and communist, London mayor Livingstone (Atlas reades are familiar with his malevolence here and most assuredly here) for a Hate America fest. I have long contended that anti-America  coalition is a Jew hating one. It's about values.

The two ideologies exhibit similar pathologies, appeal to similar constituencies, and are manipulated for similar purposes. They are, in reality, two sides of the same counterfeit coin, as Natan Sharansky has long argued. More here

    If anybody doubts the depths of anti-Americanism to which those who dominate the public square in Britain have sunk, consider the case of Hugo Chavez. The Venezuelan president came to London this week on a very public “private” visit, ostensibly to talk to oil companies and to offer cheap fuel for the poor, but in reality to pursue his propaganda offensive against the United States. Mr. Chavez is riding the wave of anti-Americanism that still shows no sign of breaking.

    Brits flatter themselves that they know more about the world than Americans, but it was a British prime minister (Neville Chamberlain) who notoriously justified his policy of appeasement as the solution to “a quarrel in a far away country between people of whom we know nothing.”

    Americans know what to expect from Mr. Chavez. Condoleezza Rice has warned against his “Latin brand of populism that has taken countries down the drain,” but the only thing Britons know about Mr. Chavez — in the unlikely event that they have heard of him at all — is that he hates President Bush.     At a carefully staged “rapturous reception” at City Hall on Monday, the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, embraced his charismatic guest,basking in reflected notoriety.Mr.Chavez seems unfamiliar with the British habit of understatement. In the course of one rambling speech, he described Mr. Bush as “the biggest perpetrator of genocide the world has known … an assassin … the worst criminal in the human race … an immoral man who should be put in jail by an international court.”

    Mr. Chavez reserved his particular venom for American policy in the Middle East, warning of a nuclear war between Iran and Israel.War with Iran would result in an oil price hike to $100 a barrel that would impoverish the West and cause people in London to die in winter, according to the Venezuelan president.     Bashing Bush alone is enough to endear him to the likes of Mr. Livingstone. But there is also a sentimentality where Latin American demagogues are concerned that is bound up with the socialist youth of the Sixties Generation. Once they had Che Guevara posters on their walls, demonstrated about Chile, and sent money to the Sandinistas. Even now, they still read Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende; they still buy fair trade coffee from Nicaragua, and, 10 years ago, they exulted when the aged Augusto Pinochet was arrested in London.

At a rally on Sunday in the Camden district of North London, these aging revolutionaries were out in force, led by B-list celebrities such as Bianca Jagger. Mr. Livingstone praised Mr. Chavez as the only man capable of taking on the “gangster regime” in Washington. New York Sun

Melanie Phillips:"Disintegration not Integration"

Made my way into town today to meet and listen to  Melanie Phillips, author of the most compelling book on Islamic fundamentalism, violence and intimidation in the West, Londonistan.

It was a small elegant lunch given by the Middle East Forum. I was secretly pleased to be meeting a great intellect and truth teller, a woman  I greatly admire,  in  the most magnificent edifice in all New York - The majestic Chrysler Building. Mmmmm.........pure, brilliant,  style.

When I worked at the Daily News, another glorious monument to man's aesthetic, I would walk that block to admire Chrysler's beauty, never tiring of it. And still, it rises seductively, gorgeously, singularly into that competitive Manhattan sky, and you have to pause and bask in its unabashed exquisiteness. I love that building.

It is a beautiful day in Manhattan and there is  a wistfulness in my joy. Always the same sadness. These beautiful days are eerily reminscent of September 11th, and I never shake that feeling. Never.

I was fortunate enough to ride up that wonderful art deco elevator with the erudite Deputy Consul-General for the British Consulate and so we chatted, dined and debated the impending ramifications of Radical Islam gone wild. Jon does not appear to be quite as worried as yours truly. Sweet, but denying. I am sure we will continue to debate.

The suicide bombings carried out in London in 2005 by British Muslims revealed an enormous fifth column of Islamist terrorists and sympathizers. Under the noses of British intelligence, London had become the European hub for the promotion, recruitment and financing of Islamic terror and extremism – so much so that exasperated European security agencies mockingly dubbed Britain “Londonistan.”

Melanie Phillips posits that the advance of the global jihad is being facilitated by a wholesale collapse of western values and national identity within Europe and in which Britain is taking the lead. Paralyzed by minority rights and the terror of Islamist violence, Phillips argues that the British establishment is even now failing to confront the religious fanaticism in its midst and is choosing instead to appease it. Meanwhile, the post-modernist onslaught upon the concept of truth itself has produced such confusion that, instead of standing up to the ideas that threaten democracy, many in Britain now subscribe to the false narrative of those who are laying siege to their society. This disorientation of the once-implacable British bulldog has major lessons and warnings for America as well.

Daniel Pipes hosted and wasted no time introducing Phillips to speak. Phillips is tall, lithe, beautiful. She was angles and edges, no fleshiness.She started right off in the political context. Here are some of her notable remarks (although all of it was notable):

Tony Blair: "He has said he will stand down before the next election. The question for the United States and for others also is whether the succeeding Prime Minister will  be as staunch a friend to America as he [Blair] has been and as staunch in the alliance in the defense of the West. I am suggesting to that is the very important question that is now troubling me.

Clearly the special relatonship between Britain and America is very much in Britain's interests.  From the point of view America being its great protector, but it's also important to what we mean to America -- the kind of moral, psychological support that Britian gives along with everything else.

I am suggesting to you that there are now very powerful trends in Britain that are making that alliance increasingly problematic.

People in America will think that because Blair is such a staunch supporter of America that Britian is very much on her side. I am afraid this is absolutely not the case.

I am saying Britian is actually a weak link in the alliance because of  a cultural enfeeblement that has taken place.

This should be of particular concern to us here in the States.

Britian is more important [to America than Europe] because of its central role in the alliance

So what has happened that is causing me such concern

[...] There has been over the past 20 to 30 years an evisceration of British National identity and values which has created a cultural and moral vaccum being exploited by Radical Islamism which has come to fill that vacuum.

"Britian has lost belief, really, in itself as a nation and furthermore in the idea of the nation itself. The nation itself is seen as the cause of all ills in the world from prejudice, discrimination to war. Legitimacy resides instead in super national institutions, values and laws. So institutions such as the United Nations, the European Union, the International Criminal Court and values such as the doctrine of International  human rights and minority rights are considered to be more legitimate because they are not rooted in the particular. The particular is discriminatory by defintion. The particular is rooted in a majority culture. The majority culture is by nature exclusivist and therefore discriminatory. They're essentially racist."

Wild.

Much of Britain's rot is the grave consequence of unregulated immigration. Turning a blind eye to the jihadis flooding that country in the 1990's was a great blow to the proverbial head. Once Britain lost control of its borders, it could not maintain security. Why were they so hospitable? Partly it was Britain's excessive deference to freedom of speech and the pragmatic (some would say cynical) point of view that in Britain, today's dissident is tomorrow's Prime Minister.

"Immigrants are coming into a culture which no longer cares to integrate them because to integrate minorities into a culture you've go to believe there is a culture for them to be integrated into. Instead Britain believes the majority culture -- the definition of it -- is illegitimate. Therefore it's a multicultural country, for there is no culture for them to be integrated into."

 "Instead of doing integration, Britain now does disintegration in every sense."

Phillips dissection of Britain's cultural collapse is clinical, surgical, scary. I found the most devastating examination to be the following;

"The deconstruction of TRUTH. Postmodernism, if you like, in which the whole idea of objectivity is regarded a an unsophisticated and ignorant construction. And that therefore all that  is relative. And if you go down that road, and you open the way to lies taking the place of truth, and you open the way to, through the minority rights situation, a moral inversion."

That is truth to power, read that again. (Toohey lives). This madness taking place.

[...] truth and lies - in which because minorities can do no wrong even when they are committing mass murder through suicide bombings, because they are essentially victims of the majority. It is the majority's fault.

"The inherent disintegration of the culture of the country has meshed in a disatrous way with the deformation of thought at the heart of Islamic radicalism."

The governing class response? Appeasement.

If you ride a tiger, you must expect to get eaten and Britain is in the process of being eaten."

Essentially what England needs is a "counter counter revolution."

And while Phillip's blames Britain's church for the appeasement, she sees hope in the rise of the evangelical, Black evangelical churches, as a counterweight;

" I believe the churches that are most robust are Evangelical churches, which are very largely Black churches, and in a way that's the strength almost the potential salavation here, that the rise of evangelicalism in Britian, which is at the moment at a fairly low level, but it's increasing."

The good news? This woman with such a clear idea of the present danger is "insanely optimistic" and doesn't wish to go off the cultural cliff. The problem of course is Britain hasn't realized yet (!) how dangerously close to the cliff Britain is.

Controlling the world through this sort of blackmail. It preys on weakness, and it preys on weakness which doesn't  confront lies, and it doesn't show that it's prepared to when attacked, are not prepared to defend themselves.

Until the West starts to undo this appeasement culture that it's been in,  then that is going to continue. I am very taken bythe argument put forward  by Alan Dershowitz in his book I've forgotten the title, his book  about terrorism in which he made a devastating point that right from the very beginning of the hijacking epidemic by Palestinians back in the early sixties, late fifties even, the very first plane that was hijacked. The reaction of the world set the tenor for what was going to come and sealed the world's fate. The reaction of the world was not, this act is completely unsupportable and these people therefore are pariahs.It was 'oh my goodness, we must address the root causes of this.'

UPDATE: Additional thoughts before I give the kids dinner. Phillips was reluctant to discuss Iran and issues she was not completed immersed in (Britain is her expertise) but she was struck by what Ayann Hirsi Ali said last week while she was still a Dutch politician;

Parpahrasing Hirsi Ali, Phillips said, the West, the free world is making a mistake if it thinks the choice in Iran is between peace and war, the choice is between war with Ahmadinejad who does not have a nuclear weapon and war with Ahmadinejad who does have a nuclear weapon. I think that's a very realistic way of putting it.

Fight the UK Boycott of Israeli Universities

UK Academics to Back Sweeping Boycott of Israeli Universities
The largest university and college lecturers union in Britain is likely to decide shortly to recommend that its 67,000 members boycott Israeli lecturers and academic institutions that do not publicly declare their opposition to Israeli policy in the territories. The boycott motion will be brought to a vote at the annual conference of the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE) to be held May 27-29. (Ha'aretz)

Specifics aside, the new boycott proposal tells us more than we want to know about the people who feel the need to propose it. More than anything, it tells us that for them, it doesn't really matter what Israel is, or does.
    There's now a democratically elected Palestinian government whose ruling party's platform endorses the extermination of the Jewish state and continued terrorism against Israeli civilians. The Palestinians are still shelling Israel with Kassam rockets, up to eight a day. They're still blowing up innocent people at felafel stands in Tel Aviv. BERLIN  – A serious anti-Semitic assault took place in Berlin last week, when an Israeli medical student was attacked at night by a group of young women after they heard her talking in Hebrew on her mobile phone. The Israeli [JEWISH] woman was beaten and wounded.

This isn't new. When I was visiting Germany regularly in the 80s there was always alot of security around any Jewish related place or event. Just as now, the violence was attributed to Moslems. Germany has made an effort, in good faith, to deal with its demons. However, it seems Moslem anti-semitism is more openly expressed in countries with a history of anti-semitism.

One time, an orthodox colleague of mine suggested I visit a Jewish old age home nearby where he had once spent Shabbat. I will never forget the look of fear in the eyes of the caretaker when I walked up to the door. They lived in fear of an attack and I was suspect until I explained why I was there.

"the Paper" Gets Rubber Stamped

There was never any doubt that 'the paper' was an intellectually dishonest, Jew hating and dangerous. Dangerous because it exists and that's all that bigots, thugs and haters of Jews really need, a fallacious document  to advertise, aggrandize, and shuck to eager Jew hating parasites.'The paper'  lifted fallacies and lies off known anti-Semitic sites and gave it the Harvard imprimatur. Severely criticized as inaccurate and wrongheaded,  it no longer sports the Harvard or Kennedy School of Government logos that previously appeared on the report's front page. But that's like the judge yelling strike that from the record after the jury has heard and booked an egregious lie. Now the London review of Books has assigned further academic and intellectual accreditation by publishing it, given further life and legs to this modern day Protocols of Zion.

WASHINGTON—Editors of the London Review of Books are standing by their decision to publish a paper by Harvard academic dean Stephen Walt and University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer, entitled The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy. The paper promotes the false and reactionary theory that U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East is manipulated by a Jewish lobby with support from a network of “neoconservative gentiles.”

An edited version of the Harvard paper appeared in the March 23 London Review of Books. Despite receiving what they describe as “a great many letters” criticizing its publication, some of which they reproduced, the editors of the literary journal said in the April 20 issue they stand by their decision to publish it. They also announced they will run a reply by Walt and Mearsheimer to the letters in the magazine’s next issue.

The magazine’s editors also noted that some of the letters congratulating the authors of the paper are of an “anti-Semitic nature.” One of them applauded Walt and Mearsheimer for having exposed a “secret Jewish conspiracy,” and its author felt the need to spell it “JEWISH conspiracy.” Nonetheless they asserted that what the letters supporting and opposing the article have in common is that they “come from people who appear not to have read the piece, and who seem incapable of distinguishing between criticism of Israeli or U.S. government policy and anti-Semitism.”

One of the letters was from Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz. Among other points, he took exception to two of the paper’s central arguments—the United States has become a target of “terrorism” because of its support for Israel and that Washington and Tel Aviv have different, if not conflicting, interests in the Middle East. 'The paper" and like endeavors are cloying malevolent attempts to alienate America from the Jews.  This is not possible, unless you separate America from the very tenets that define her - life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. NEVER AGAIN, Charles Krauthammer

When 6 million European Jews were killed in the Holocaust, only two main centers of Jewish life remained: America and Israel. That binary star system remains today, but a tipping point has just been reached. With every year, as the Jewish population continues to rise in Israel and decline in America (and in the rest of the Diaspora), Israel increasingly becomes, as it was at the time of Jesus, the center of the Jewish world.

An epic restoration, and one of the most improbable. To take just one of the remarkable achievements of the return: Hebrew is the only "dead" language in recorded history to have been brought back to daily use as the living language of a nation. But there is a price and a danger to this transformation. It radically alters the prospects for Jewish survival.

For 2,000 years, Jews found protection in dispersion — protection not for individual communities, which were routinely persecuted and massacred, but protection for the Jewish people as a whole. Decimated here, they could survive there. They could be persecuted in Spain and find refuge in Constantinople. They could be massacred in the Rhineland during the Crusades or in the Ukraine during the Khmelnytsky Insurrection of 1648-49 and yet survive in the rest of Europe.

Hitler put an end to that illusion. He demonstrated that modern anti-Semitism married to modern technology — railroads, disciplined bureaucracies, gas chambers that kill with industrial efficiency — could take a scattered people and "concentrate" them for annihilation.

The establishment of Israel was a Jewish declaration to a world that had allowed the Holocaust to happen — after Hitler had made his intentions perfectly clear — that the Jews would henceforth resort to self-protection and self-reliance. And so they have, building a Jewish army, the first in 2,000 years, that prevailed in three great wars of survival (1948-49, 1967 and 1973).

But in a cruel historical irony, doing so required concentration — putting all the eggs back in one basket, a tiny territory hard by the Mediterranean, eight miles wide at its waist. A tempting target for those who would finish Hitler's work.

His successors now reside in Tehran. The world has paid ample attention to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's declaration that Israel must be destroyed. Less attention has been paid to Iranian leaders' pronouncements on exactly how Israel would be "eliminated by one storm," as Ahmadinejad has promised.

Former president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the presumed moderate of this gang, has explained that "the use of a nuclear bomb in Israel will leave nothing on the ground, whereas it will only damage the world of Islam." The logic is impeccable, the intention clear: A nuclear attack would effectively destroy tiny Israel, while any retaliation launched by a dying Israel would have no major effect on an Islamic civilization of a billion people stretching from Mauritania to Indonesia.

As it races to acquire nuclear weapons, Iran makes clear that if there is any trouble, the Jews will be the first to suffer. "We have announced that wherever [in Iran] America does make any mischief, the first place we target will be Israel," said Gen. Mohammad Ebrahim Dehghani, a top Revolutionary Guards commander. Hitler was only slightly more direct when he announced seven months before invading Poland that, if there was another war, "the result will be . . . the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe." Penn Censor Prof's Past Articles Condemned Art Censorship

So the Penn State professor who censored a student's artwork because of a perceived sympathy to Israel has a written history history of condemning censorship of the arts. Volokh is reporting it all here.
Hmmmm, what could have  motivated Garoian to censor Shulman's artwork then? I hazard to guess.

Ironically, Professor Garoian, responsible for censorship in this incident, previously wrote a series of articles condemning censorship of the arts, including at Penn State!]

A very strong statement by the director of the Penn State Hillel, Tuvia Abramson:

Following eight days of misinformation by the School of Visual Arts and the Penn State University spokesman, which resulted in misleading information, I have decided today to issue an official statement as the executive director of Penn State Hillel.

[...] In my 23 years in Hillel on three different campuses, I have not seen an act so blatant as the act of censorship, discrimination, and anti-Semitism like the one which applies to Joshua Stulman.

This was not a single act. This was systematic abuse and intimidation which was applied by the School of Visual Arts to coerce the student and force him to cancel his art exhibition all because of its political content.

The message of Joshua's exhibit was this: When you preach hate, teach hate, and indoctrinate children with hate, you will have terror. When you use the airways and the political system to reinforce hate, you create a mechanism by which these children will learn how and when to destroy innocent life.

This message was blocked by the director of the School of Visual Arts and its faculty without discussion or review of most of the artwork with the student Joshua Stulman. The director issued a statement canceling the exhibit stating the cancellation was based on Penn State's Policy AD42 about Zero Tolerance for Hate and that Joshua's work did not promote a democratic dialogue or cultural diversity.

The second reason stated for canceling the exhibit was due to the sponsorship of Hillel for the reception on opening night.

Both of these statements were false, misleading, and were never discussed prior to receiving the letter of cancellation. They were fake excuses to find justification to shut up the exhibit because of its political content, which did not go along with the political opinion or agenda of Professor Charles Garoian and art lecturer and advisor Robert Yarber.

Church Divestment in Israel

There are more than two dozen overtures on divestment (ranging from endorsement to revocation), providing an opportunity for General Assembly commissioners to actually do their jobs and deliberate on the issue, perhaps, God forbid, even requiring complete and fair information. (Yes, I know this would be a departure from time honored tradition when it comes to Middle East issues . . . but it might be time for a change). UN Ultimatum Expires Friday Afternoon

“What we do know about Iran’s ballistic missiles program is they have been working very hard with North Korea and others to extend their range and accuracy, and that’s a concern,” the American ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, told The New York Sun.

The United States, France and Britain say that if Tehran does not meet the deadline, they will make the enrichment demand and other conditions compulsory and they want punitive measures to stay on the table.

    But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said no Security Council resolution could make Iran give up its nuclear program.

The Iranian nation won't give a damn about such useless resolutions," Ahmadinejad told thousands of people in Khorramdareh in northwestern Iran.

The Security Council is awaiting the arrival of a report by the nuclear watchdog chief, Mohamed ElBaradei, which is expected to be critical of Iran. Diplomats at the United Nations said yesterday that the new missile threat could add weight to arguments of European and American officials who are attempting to persuade their colleagues from China and Russia not to veto a resolution that would set in motion punitive measures against Iran’s defiant leaders.

“In order to be credible, the Security Council,of course,has to act,” Rice said The council “is the primary and most important institution for the maintenance of peace and stability and security, and it cannot have its will and its word simply ignored by a member state,” she said, referring to Iran.

I received this insightful email from Marcin in Poland in response to my post on The Decline of Arabism, The Rise of Islamic Iran. You must read it.

This disturbing development actually dovetails nicely with what Prof.  Marek Edelman (the youngest and only surviving leader of the Warsaw  Ghetto uprising) said in an interview with the weekly "Przekrój" when  questioned about his support for the war in Iraq. He said that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has nothing to do with Palestinians.  Take the Palestinian autonomy. They have no industry, no commerce, no  schools, insufficient clean water, no medical facilities. Really,  they have nothing which makes a modern society worthy of the name.  They do, however, have guns, ammo and explosives aplenty. Which of  course means that someone is supplying them with these things (but  not with life's basic necessities). This has only one possible  conclusion: that someone wants unrest in the region for political and/ or economic gain. Please note that they want UNREST and not for the  PA to win. If they wanted them to win, they'd give them tanks,  warplanes etc., all those things needed to fight a modern military.  Instead they give them toys, baubles to keep them pestering Israel,  without posing an overwhelming threat to the latter. At the same time  they rely on Israel not to go in and obliterate the PA, using Western  fear of political correctness as a weapon against it. Meanwhile, the  lack of life necessities is a powerful prod to the Palis urging them  to keep on killing "for social justice". Unrest is forever, while a  win for one side or the other is a termination of the status quo.

Now, to get back to your article, we have known for a long time that  like the Saudis, the Mad Mullahs of Iran have been supplying the PA  and as it turns out other terrorists with all forms of arms and money  (which was promptly spent on weapons). This means that like the  Saudis they have an interest in the PA being a thorn in the side of  Israel and of the entire region., most likely to maintain  artificially high oil prices and has made Iran very wealthy, since  they are the #4 world oil producer. It has also enabled them to  become a regional powerbroker and a military power as well. Now, not  content with being a grey eminence, the leopard is showing his true  spots. The Iranian government feels powerful enough to issue  challenges to the West, which it has always done, but also to its  immediate neighbors. This means that they feel reasonably confident  that they would end up on top, if the whole festering heap of the  Middle East were to collapse; as it would during a general war in the  region.

Thus,

A) they have a military capability which is unknown to us ie.  being closer to nukes than we think, or/and

B) they are greatly  overconfident in their military power and disdainful of any Western  military response. This is a bad thing, in particular the latter  option. A dilettante confident in his knowledge and skill will  actually launch a war much sooner than a professional who is aware of  the risks and realities (vide Hitler vs. Stalin). And if the two  options both held true, as they might, then a dilettante with nukes  is even worse. Of course, we know Iran would lose in the end, but  this would involve the entire Western world, and at what cost?

This is indeed horrible news.

Melanie Phillips is running a splendid piece here by former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar,which "reminds us of what a tragic day it was for both Spain and the defence of the free world when the Spanish buckled under the threat of terror and replaced him by an appeasement-minded government. Aznar is one of the few present or former world leaders who really gets it. NATO, he says, needs to articulate a new mission: to combat jihadism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and concentrate its efforts upon fighting terror. Obvious. In pursuit of this aim, he says, it should open its doors to those nations that share its values and invite Japan, Australia, and Israel to become full members".

As you can imagine, many people in Europe and in NATO were shocked by the idea of inviting Israel, although they took as a natural fact the establishment of closer cooperation with Japan and Australia, which indeed is a big change for NATO. Some people from Israel also objected to having Israel as a formal ally in NATO. But treating Israel as if it were not an integral part of the Western world is a big mistake that will affect our ability to prevail in this long war against jihadism. I think it is in our mutual interests to have Israel as a formal ally...

The West cannot fight this radical tide without Israel. Israelis might decide that for their own security they had better follow the traditional policy of relying just on themselves. But Islamic extremism is more a tsunami than a tide, and in front of this powerful force we better stand together. In Europe, more and more people better understand the Israeli position each day. If you agree that the world faces a global threat, it is necessary to organize a strong response to this threat. For me, Israel is a vital part of the Western world. Israel is becoming more and more important to the Western world for stability, prosperity, and freedom...

I don't believe in appeasement against terrorism. I don't believe in negotiation with terrorism. I believe in the necessity to fight against terrorists. It is a very serious mistake to negotiate with terrorism. Terrorists should be frightened and defeated, and this is possible. No other policy exists for me.

It’s not often one hears a member of the political or intellectual class articulate so clearly and unequivocally such a moral, progressive and eminently realistic position.

"If Sweden cannot take part in a peacekeeping exercise because Israel participates in it, then we can hardly see Sweden take part in peacemaking in our region," the embassy said in a statement.

It also criticised Stockholm for approving a forthcoming visit by members of the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas, at the invitation of Swedish associations.

Last year I wrote an article about how Swedish society is disintegrating and is in danger of collapsing, at least in certain areas and regions. The country that gave us Bergman, ABBA and Volvo could become known as the Bosnia of northern Europe. The “Swedish model” would no longer refer to a stable and peaceful state with an advanced economy, but to a Eurabian horror story of utopian multiculturalism, socialist mismanagement and runaway immigration. Some thought I was exaggerating, and that talk of the possibility of a future civil war in Sweden was pure paranoia. Was it?

In a new sociological survey (pdf in Swedish, with brief English introduction) entitled “Vi krigar mot svenskarna” (“We’re waging a war against the Swedes”), young immigrants in the troubled city of Malmö have been interviewed about why they are involved in crime. Although it is not stated, most of the immigrant perpetrators are Muslims. In one of the rare instances where the Swedish media actually revealed the truth, the newspaper Aftonbladet reported several years ago that 9 out of 10 of the most criminal ethnic groups in Sweden came from Muslim countries. This must be borne in mind whilst reading the following newspaper article:

SWEDISH MUSLIMS WANT SEPERATE LAW

The Swedish Muslim Association, Sveriges muslimska förbund (SMuF), the largest Muslim organisation in Sweden, has written a letter to all the parties in the Swedish parliament to demand that separate legislation be introduced for Muslims. SmuF has 70,000 members and claims to represent the 470,000 Muslim immigrants living in the country. Sweden has a total population of 9 million. One in every 19 people in Sweden is a Muslim. It is the fastest growing segment of the population.

ISRAEL CONDEMNS BURNING OF FLAG

Israel's ambassador in Rome has condemned the burning of two Israeli flags during a march to commemorate Italy's liberation at the end of WWII.

Ehud Gol said he was filled with "shame and rage" as a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators set the flags alight on the fringe of Tuesday's march in Milan.

Protesters shouted "Intifada" and "Free Palestine", according to media reports.

Centre-left leader Romano Prodi, who narrowly won Italy's election this month, strongly condemned the incident.

Mr Prodi's centre-right rivals accused him of hypocrisy, saying his broad coalition included anti-Israel activists.

'Anti-Jewish resurgence'

The anti-Israel demonstrations were reportedly prompted by the presence of Israeli flags in honour of the Jewish Brigade, whose members died helping to liberate Italy.

"As a Jew and an Israeli, I was filled with shame and anger at the sight of the barbarous behaviour of the 'fascists' of the extreme left, who defiled the sanctity of the Liberation Day holiday," Mr Gol said in a statement.

Regarding Josh Stulman's exhibit on the culture of terrorism in the Palestinian territories, as per this email letter to Ed Beck of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East:

Thank you for your note expressing concern over the proposed art exhibit. President Spanier is out of town and his schedule will make it unlikely that he can respond in a timely manner so I am responding on his behalf, but I will be sure that he sees your note. I certainly understand your concern, because there has been much confusion on this issue in the media. First, and most importantly, the "administration" does not condone censorship of artwork and had no role in this matter. Indeed, we have worked diligently with the art department to help find a way to ensure that the student has an opportunity to display his work.

On Monday the student was again notified by email and in person that the space was available for his use the rest of this week and that two people from the department were also available to help him set it up. I was informed last night that the student does not feel ready to proceed at this time and would prefer to wait until the fall. We have assured him that the University will help to facilitate the exhibit whenever he is ready.

So let me reiterate that in no way is Penn State blocking the presentation of his work because of its content. [emphasis mine - Atlas]

• There are no words to adequately condemn the despicable attack in Tel Aviv, not only because it is contrary to the interests of the Palestinian people, but, most importantly, because of the philosophy behind it that is destroying the Palestinian people.

Antisemitism at Penn State

First take a moment -  and write the good Professor a note. Don't be rude. Don't threaten. Be firm and respectful and forthright. And pass this on to as many people as possible.

Do not let this man have a moment's peace. My letter:

Dear Mr. Garoian,

   There are moments in life when one is so close to a situation they cannot see the forest for the trees. This, I fear, is the cause of your recent blindness.

   As a leader, role model and educator your actions are a template for our children. I think you have done a great disservice to yourself, your fine institution and the children you serve by canceling the young Master Shulman's exhibit "Portraits of Terror."

   It would be one thing, if Mr. Shulman was the murderer ( ie  John Wayne Gacy). But Shulman's retelling of history in his art is a noble, admirable undertaking. Why would an educator and role model attempt to stifle or shut down an aspiring artist?

    Please step back, take a deep breath and consider the dastardly path you have chosen. Moral compass notwithstanding, this is a bad decision. I implore you to please reconsider.

PENN STATE CENSORS EXHIBIT

For Penn State student Josh Stulman, years of hard work ended in disappointment yesterday when the university cancelled his upcoming art exhibit for violation of Penn State's policies on nondiscrimination, harassment and hate.

Three days before his 10-piece exhibit -- Portraits of Terror -- was scheduled to open at the Patterson Building, Stulman (senior-painting and anthropology) received an e-mail message from the School of Visual Arts that said his exhibit on images of terrorism "did not promote cultural diversity" or "opportunities for democratic dialogue" and the display would be cancelled.

The exhibit, Stulman said, which is based mainly on the conflict in Palestinian territories, raises questions concerning the destruction of Jewish religious shrines, anti-Semitic propaganda and cartoons in Palestinian newspapers, the disregard for rules of engagement and treatment of prisoners, and the indoctrination of youth into terrorist acts.

"I'm being censored and the reason for censoring me doesn't make sense," Stulman said.

Charles Garoian, professor and director of the School of Visual Arts, said Stulman's controversial images did not mesh with the university's educational mission.

How about killing babies in pizzerias? Does that mesh with the university's mission, tool?

The decision to cancel the exhibit came after reviewing Penn State's Policy AD42: Statement on Nondiscrimination and Harassment and Penn State's Zero Tolerance Policy for Hate, he wrote.

Garoian could not be reached by The Daily Collegian for further comment by press time yesterday.

"We always encourage those who are offended by free speech to use their own constitutional right to free speech to make their concerns known," Mahon wrote. "This is an educational institution and people should embrace opportunities to inform one another and the public. ... We don't have a right to hide art."

Stulman said the exhibit, which is sponsored by Penn State Hillel, aims to create awareness on campus about the senselessness of terrorism and drew inspiration from images that have appeared in the public through newspapers and television.

He said he was shocked at the university's decision to cancel the exhibit and that he has tried to meet with Garoian on numerous occasions to discuss his artwork.

"It's not about hate. I don't hate Muslims. This is not about Islam," Stulman said. "This is about terrorism impacting the Palestinian way of life and Israel way of life."

Stulman said advertisements for the event were defaced in the Patterson and School of Visual Arts buildings, one of which had a large swastika on it.

Stulman, who is Jewish, said he felt threatened and abused by the Nazi symbol and is concerned for his artwork and his personal well-being.

"We don't have a political agenda except to support the voice of Jewish students," he said.

Dear Professor Garoian,

May I address you as a fellow academic, albeit one working in the United Kingdom, whose original field is Arabic, Persian and Islamic Studies? The reason for my writing is that I have just learned of your decision to ban an exhibition of art centred around Palestinian terrorism, the work of a Penn State student called Josh Stulman.

I understand that your decision to cancel Mr Stulman's exhibit was made on the grounds that it 'did not promote cultural diversity' or 'opportunities for democratic dialogue'. This seems perfectly bizarre to me. I believe that the exhibition was concerned with the social and cultural impact of Palestinian terrorism on two societies, Palestinian and Israeli. In what way would that not promote 'cultural diversity'? Israel, which is daily threatened and harmed by that terrorism is - and I say this on the basis of close knowledge of the situation - is one of the most racially, religiously, and culturally diverse nations in the world, and certain many times more diverse in all these respects than any of its neighbours for a long way round. To convey the nature of a singularly vicious form of hatred (both racially and religiously 'justified') that has corrupted Palestinian culture to a frightening degree and has damaged one of the world's most open and vibrant societies seems to me a very legitimate thing.

But I also have to ask why on earth a work of art, however didactic in intent, has to conform to a rigid doctrine that it should 'promote cultural diversity'. That sort of ruling sounds like something from a totalitarian system like China under Mao or Russia under Stalin, or, indeed, countries like Saudi Arabia or Iran today which, in case you have not noticed, not only hate Israel and Jews, but spend a lot of money to promote terrorism against her.

You say the exhibit would not provide 'opportunities for democratic dialogue'. First, how do you know whether this would be the case or not? Since the exhibition was to take place on university grounds, I have to assume that the normal rules of open dialogue would have applied. Was Mr Stulman in some way preventing other students or staff from debating the merits of his work, from holding meetings on campus, say, or from writing online comments, or anything else? Since I assume he was not doing this, it seems to me that your action in banning the exhibit is an abuse of academic standards. The academy, as you well know, is a place in which ideas are put forward and - sometimes strongly - debated and disagreed with. Or does Penn State now allow one side of an argument to be put forward? If so, I must tell the more opinionated of my students to enrol there.

Since you are in favour of cultural diversity, I take it you also approve of diversity of argument. American campuses (much more than ours in the UK) are repeatedly venues for anti-Israel speakers, meetings, and exhibits. Why, then, should one student exhibiting images about Palestinian terror rock the boat so much?

If this had been a Muslim/Arab/Iranian student who wanted to put up an exhibition on the evils of the 'Zionist entity', would you, I wonder, have banned the event?

I will ask you now to do some hard thinking. Reflect on the meaning of the academy, the open exchange of opinions, and the profound significance of Palestinian terrorism as a subject for artistic expression. If you disagree with Mr Stulman's take on the matter, please just argue with him. Do not, at the risk of losing all credibility and honour as a university teacher, censor him. You are living in America, a country that has, as one of its many claims to fame, rights to free expression that are enshrined in the First Amendment. Please confirm me in my opinion that Americans still live up to the high standards imposed by their remarkable Constitution. We don't have one over here: you have that privilege. Please honour it.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust Day (Yom HaShoah in Hebrew) is today Tuesday, April 25 (and began last evening). Holocaust Day commemorates the martyrs and heroes who died under the Nazis.
The State of Israel will take time out Monday evening to remember the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, marking the start of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The annual state ceremony will begin in Israel at 8 p.m. at Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority.

Iran Invoked at Holocaust Remembrance. Israel's consul general in New York said Sunday that the world needs to take a tougher stance with Iran and warned that a "strong" and "determined" Israel will never allow another Jewish Holocaust.

[...] pledged a commitment to keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who denies the Holocaust and has repeatedly expressed his desire for Israel’s destruction.

   “This is not an Israeli issue,” the consul general of Israel, Arye Mekel, told more than 1,000 attendees at a Holocaust Remembrance Day event at Hunter College. “This is a world problem. The world must stop Iran.”

   Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah, is observed worldwide tomorrow.    Mr. Mekel urged the U.N. to impose economic and political sanctions against Iran. “Let’s be clear,” he said. “That country cannot, cannot have nuclear weapons.”

Norbert Friedman, an 84-year-old Krakow native who survived 11 concentration and death camps, said yesterday that promises to prevent future holocausts are “only empty words unless they’re followed up with deeds.”

   Stressing the contemporary relevance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, UN ambassador Mr. Bolton said the potential for a “nuclear holocaust” looms as Iran pursues its nuclear program, despite international pressure.    “Holocaust remembrance is not simply for the past, but for the present and the future as well,” Mr. Bolton said. “I’m honored to be part of that struggle.”

   With its frequent condemnations of Israel, the U.N. has “disappointed the ideals” of those who established the transnational body after World War II, Mr. Bolton said. New York Sun here

Glenn Reynolds reminds us that today is Holocaust Remembrance Day, and links to a rather incongruous looking link at a blog called Atlas Shrugs. The link is distressing on more than one level; it starts out with a picture of an attractive woman's face pasted on a sexy Superwoman costume ... evidently the blog's proprietress (I for one can't find her name). And right next to it is the worst of the worst of Holocaust imagery. I suppose some people have not seen this, or perhaps need a reminder that not every bit of unpleasantness on God's earth is the same as the genocide that eliminated the Jews from Eastern, and most of Western, Europe half a century ago. Maybe the fact that the pictures essentially depict my extended family as rotting flesh makes me a little touchy about them and with Ms. Atlas's rather insensitive juxtaposition of her cartoonish visage (not to mention the questionable allusion to Ayn Rand, of all people, in this context) however.

I tried to leave a comment, but it was deleted because I have not been approved for commenting ..................so I shall leave  it here (paraphrasing - I didn't save it);

If I have offended your sensibilities it was not my intention. The terror depicted in these few photos are a mere glimpse at the sheer horror the Jews suffered during WW II.

Today the Holocaust is spoken of casually, dismissively and leaders of  nation states deny the Holocaust ever took place . Millions of people living under those brutal dictators believe it.

Those images may sicken you but they are happening now, just yesterday in the resort town of  Dahab, Egypt and last week Tel Aviv. Hamas offends me, Hizbollah offends me, Islamic Jihad offends me,  Jew hatred offends me, blowing up babies in pizzerias offends me.

We are living in a world where proclamations are made by the President of Iran to "wipe Israel off the map" and says it repeatedly as recently as yesterday.

We are living in a world where just this past Sunday, the Islamic Thinkers Society were chanting "THE MUSHROOM CLOUD IS ON ITS WAY," AND "THE REAL HOLOCAUST IS ON ITS WAY" on the streets of this great city.

These are dangerous, grave times for Jews and freedom loving peoples.

You "suppose some people have not seen this". Ron, these images and those oft hidden images of 9/11 must be seen, must be viewed or the stories become just that -- stories. The media has abandoned its role of public servant delivering the urgent news of the day and instead is wielding its power to advance its own agenda.

Why Atlas Shrugs? Given the global chess board, Atlas cannot, must not shrug, not now (not ever). I am sure Rand would agree.

Israel fell silent for victims of the Nazi Holocaust as leaders of the Jewish state accused Iran and its hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of following in the footsteps of Adolf Hitler, AFP reported.

Shimon Peres, Israel's former prime minister, drew a direct comparison between Ahmadinejad and the leader of Nazi Germany in an interview from Poland where he was to lead the March of the Living.

"This is the first man since Hitler to stand up and say that the Jewish people must be exterminated," the Nobel peace prize winner told public radio.

Palestinians were apparently planning a mass murder for Holocaust Day: Officials: Holocaust Day attack foiled.

IDF soldiers detained Monday a terrorist planning to carry out a suicide bombing in Israel.

The would-be bomber was nabbed near the community of Adam, north of Jerusalem, without his explosive belt, which he was supposed to receive later on. Security officials later told Ynet: “A terror attack on Holocaust Day or the next day was prevented.” Hat tip Bruce H

I confronted her at the door, tears streaming down my face. Her instant maternal alarm quickly dissolved when she learned the source of my distress.

Slowly, I became fiercely pro-Israel. I even considered converting to Judaism as a kind of reparation. Of course, I never said this out loud. I lived in a Catholic ghetto; though I never ever heard any anti-Semitic remarks, I was on an island of Catholics in a sea of Southern Baptists. Jews — as evidenced by Israel — were admirable but exotic.

As I matured and witnessed and cheered Israel’s survival, I learned more about the rich history of Jews in America. I read with a shiver of pride George Washington’s Letter to the Jewish congregation in Rhode Island. Heartened by Israel’s “Never Again”, I knew with certainty that “Never in America” was an absolute. I read Jewish biographies like Harry Golden’s For Two Cents Plain, books about urban Jewish childhoods. I envied the survival instincts of these, my religious forebears.

(IHC News, 23 April 2006) Skinheads in the Ukranian city of Dnepropetrovsk decided to mark Hitler’s birthday by stabbing a Jew just after the Passover holiday last Thursday 20 April 2006.

At first, the skinheads tried to attack a group of yeshiva (seminary) students but after they escaped, they targeted twenty-year-old Haim Gorbov, a Ukranian citizen and visiting student from northern Israel.

The perpetrators first broke a bottle over Gorbov’s head but when they realized he was unhurt, stabbed him in the chest and fled.

“The rise in antisemitic activity demands immediate and determined preventative action,” said President of the Union of Jewish Communities in Russia, Lev Laviev.

“Whoever doesn't invest in fighting skinheads who are attacking minorities will have to deal with them when they increase the level of violence towards the whole of Ukrainian society,” Laviev said.

A previous attack two months ago, was thwarted by security guards but the latest incident is another sign in the growing rate of antisemitic and racial incidents in the region that Jewish officials say are not being dealt with properly by authorities.

A New York rally by the Islamic Thinkers Society outside the Israeli consulate yesterday featured chants of "The mushroom cloud is on its way! The real holocaust is on its way!"

The demonstration by the Queens-based group was monitored by the Investigative Project on Terrorism whose members noted signs including "Islam will Dominate" and a picture with an Islamic flag flying over the White House. More here

Recently, Rabbi Jonathan Miller hosted Bosnia's Grand Mufti Mustafa Ceric to speak at Temple Emanu-El so we Jews and Christians might "make room in our hearts and souls for others who believe differently from us." The rabbi should have done some research first.

Ceric recently called on the world to stand by Syria, a state that sponsors terrorism against Israel and U.S. forces in Iraq. During the March 2004 pogroms in Kosovo against Orthodox Christian Serbs by Albanian Muslims - in which 19 people were killed, dozens of churches and cemeteries desecrated, and close to 4,000 of Kosovo's minority Serbs displaced - BBC.com reported Ceric "expressed concern about the rise of anti-Islamic hysteria in the West." He added there was "no such thing as Islamic terrorism," and said there were no charities linked to al-Qaida operating in Bosnia.

That a rabbi would invite a terror enabler to ingratiate himself and his religion to a Judeo-Christian audience is a disgrace. The American Jewish Committee's counter-terrorism division has warned about Islamists using interfaith to gain legitimacy, noting Muslim organizations have learned "interfaith dialogue is a good way to spread the ideology," and adding, "these organizations come to the Jewish community to talk about `interfaith,' while they still teach anti-Western and anti-Christian doctrines to their followers."

      That aside, the vision of a Muslim cleric lecturing fair-minded American audiences on being open to other faiths borders on the obscene. If Jews continue doing PR for movements that wish them ill, they'll find themselves in a position similar to what they were in during World War II. At that time, Jerusalem Mufti Hajj Amin al-Husseini met with Hitler to offer support. Thousands of Bosnian Muslims answered the mufti's call to volunteer for service in the Waffen SS. When we finally arrive at the logical conclusion of the current state of affairs, in which Jews are fleeing Europe once again and 6 million in Israel are threatened with "erasure" from the map, it won't be because "the world" looked the other way. It'll be because of my fellow Jews' own fatal ignorance.

Never again? What a joke. Shame on this so-called rabbi, and shame on every Jew and Christian in the audience who applauded the speaker on cue.

Outrage and disbelief as world soccer body condemns Israel, not Hamas

FIFA has condemned Israel for an air strike on an empty soccer field in the Gaza Strip that was used for training exercises by Islamic Jihad and the al-Aqsa martyrs brigade. This strike did not cause any injuries. But at the same time FIFA has refused to condemn a Palestinian rocket attack on an Israeli soccer field last week which did cause injuries.

With the soccer World Cup, which takes place only once every four years, just weeks away, it is a time of mounting emotion for the hundreds of millions of people across the globe who passionately follow the game. As FIFA meets in the next few days to decide what action to take against Israel, the double standards involved could not be more obvious.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israeli-made bullets bought by the U.S. Army to plug a shortfall should be used for training only, not to fight Muslim guerrillas in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. lawmakers told Army generals on Thursday.

Since the Army has other stockpiled ammunition, "by no means, under any circumstances should a round (from Israel) be utilized," said Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, the top Democrat on a House of Representatives Armed Services subcommittee with jurisdiction over land forces.

The Army contracted with Israel Military Industries Ltd. in December for $70 million in small-caliber ammunition.

The Israeli firm was one of only two worldwide that could meet U.S. technical specifications and delivery needs, said Brig. Gen. Paul Izzo, the Army's program executive officer for ammunition. The other was East Alton, Illinois-based Winchester Ammunition, which also received a $70 million contract.

A former Florida college professor, Sami Al-Arian, has pleaded guilty to aiding Palestinian Islamic Jihad and agreed to serve more jail time before being deported, according to records made public today by a federal court in Tampa.

Al-Arian admitted to a variety of facts about his support for a terrorist group responsible for killing dozens of people in Israel, Gaza, and the West bank, chiefly through suicide bombings. In the agreement, Al-Arian conceded he "was associated with" and "performed services for" Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

An Arab is Murdered

An Arab resident was murdered yesterday in East Jerusalem, a week after selling his house to a Jew.The Israeli Web site Y-Net reported from Palestinian Arab sources that the killing was claimed by operatives of the Al-Aqsa Brigades, which are the militant faction of Fatah.

Two key suspects in the barbaric slaying of a young Jewish man in France have turned themselves in to police, judicial officials said Tuesday.

The men, whose names were not released, were fingered by other members of a gang accused in the kidnapping, torture and killing of Ilan Halimi earlier this year. Halimi's murder revived concerns about anti-Semitism in France.

One suspect turned himself in Monday to police in Bobigny, northeast of Paris, officials said. A second turned himself in directly to the criminal brigade in Paris

All were described as being close to the main suspect, Youssouf Fofana. Other gang members have told investigators that Fofana was responsible, authorities said. 

Authorities found 23-year-old Halimi naked, handcuffed and covered with burn marks near railroad tracks in the Essonne region south of Paris on February 13. He died on the way to the hospital after being held captive for more than three weeks.

Critics accused police of initially ignoring anti-Semitic motives in the crime, which caught the attention of senior government officials and prompted fear of renewed anti-Semitism in France.

But it is clear that plenty of people did know, both that Mr. Halimi was being tortured and that he was Jewish. The police, according to lawyers with access to the investigation files, think at least 20 people participated in his abduction and the subsequent, amateurish negotiations for ransom NYT 3/06

..In the days since the dying Halimi was discovered, some journalists have been making ugly discoveries. The gang of thugs (they called themselves "the Barbarians") had sequestered the young man in an apartment that had been rented by the doorman of the building. The doorman knew what had been happening but did nothing. Many other residents in the building had heard a man screaming, but had decided to mind their own business instead of calling for help, even anonymously. "When you live here, you think about yourself and only about yourself," one of them said.

The screams must have been loud because the torture was especially atrocious: the thugs cut bits off the flesh of the young man, they cut his fingers and ears, they burned him with acid, and in the end poured flammable liquid on him and set him on fire.

Watching France slip slide into oblivion, into it's already forgotten past,  is like watching a really bad movie. You can't take your eyes off it but you wish it would just end already.

Iran Says Israel Behind Danish Cartoons Because of "Anger Over Hamas' Win"

The furious international row over the publication of cartoons satirising the prophet Muhammad intensified  when Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, claimed it was an Israeli conspiracy motivated by anger over Hamas's win in the Palestinian elections.

Huh? But but but, the toons ran in September 2005, the Hamas election was January 26th.
Why split hairs, right? Let's not let facts get in the way of incitement to kill Jews.

More Cartoon Related News: Radical Islamic Sudanese authorities refuse to allow the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)  to continue their humanitarian aid operation in the state of South Darfur in Western Sudan.

Monday this week, NRC was informed by the Sudanese authorities that the organisation’s cooperation agreement with the Sudanese authorities on camp coordination in Kalma camp would not be renewed. NRC was also informed that its presence in South Darfur was not wanted, and NRC was asked to leave the state. No reasons were given by the authorities as to why NRC had to leave the state of South Darfur.

NRC has been coordinating relief work in Kalma camp in cooperation with the local authorities in South Darfur since mid 2004. Kalma camp is the largest camp for internally displaced persons in Sudan with almost 100,000 people.

 

In Sweden: "Kill the Jews"

Swedish Chancellor of Justice: Muslim calls for "Death to Jews" are just part of the debate on the Middle East

Earlier this year Swedish Chancellor of Justice Mr Göran Lambertz decided to discontinue his department's pre-trial investigation into the Grand Mosque of Stockholm, where audio cassettes with highly inflammatory anti-Semitic content were being sold. After Swedish radio programmer Dagens Eko unveiled the contents of the cassettes in November 2005, a charge of racial incitement was filed with the police against the Stockholm mosque.

The Swedish Chancellor of Justice responded by closing the pre-trial investigation on the grounds that "the lecture did admittedly feature statements that are highly degrading to Jews (among other things, they are consistently referred to as the brothers of apes and pigs)" but pointing out that such statements "should be judged differently – and therefore be regarded as permissible - because they were used by one side in an ongoing and far-reaching conflict where calls to arms and insults are part of the everyday climate in the rhetoric that surrounds this conflict".

There are several comments to be made regarding the Chancellor's remarkable statement. One is that it is important to remember in this election year that there is a sizeable Muslim minority in Sweden (Muslims number 400,000 souls in Sweden out of a total population of 9 million, whereas there are about 16,000 Jews living in that country).

Another is that at the mosque, a curse was pronounced on all Jews everywhere and the audiences were encouraged to participate in Jihad (holy war) against Jews, highlighting suicide bombers as an effective weapon and praising them as martyrs. The Middle East was not singled out. This would therefore appear to be a clear case of racial incitement.

Yet the Chancellor of Justice opines that owing to the Middle East conflict, "such expressions, despite their content, cannot be regarded as racial incitement according to Swedish law". One might indeed wonder how the phrase "kill the Jews" needs to be expressed in order to be regarded as sufficient incitement to kill the Jews, according to the Chancellor, who finds nothing inflammatory in the statement.

What part of "kill the Jews" is the Chancellor cool with, exactly -Atlas?

Notwithstanding the above, the Chancellor is on very shaky legal ground indeed. Sweden already has a legal precedent that Mr Lambertz has chosen to ignore: a case was successfully brought on grounds of anti-Semitic incitement in 1989 in the District Court and again in the Court of Appeal (1990) against Radio Islam's legally responsible publisher Ahmed Rami. Legal proceedings had been instituted by the then-current Chancellor of Justice and Rami was convicted on 17 counts.

One consistent theme in these recent audio cassettes is a Hadith (an Islamic tradition that is regarded as a direct quote from Muhammad). This Hadith claims that there can be no peace anywhere in the world until the last Jew has been killed:

What it represents is the struggle between good and evil. The traditional Jew-peaceful, studious, dedicated to procreation, family and life of worship and simplicity. He is concerned with being benevolent hence the Kosher way of killing animals-without suffering. He does not deviate from faith in God and belief that God, if he is good, will take care of him. On the other side is the trayf  - the more  likely to use physical force, have many wives, or at least does not stay with one family and may beget a few, less concern in procreation rather more concern in pleasure. Kills even for his faith or in the name of his faith. More physical than studious and much less faithful to family and religion.Inflicts pain without remorse and enjoys the disrespect for other living creatures.

Therefore for the strife between good and evil to continue and exist - the fundamental basis and core for this existence  the traditional Jew must survive. If he dies the good is gone and evil takes over the world. The struggle must continue as this is the setup and fabric of this world.

The conquering of Israel is in theory. That piece of beach holds no oil, gold, or any other valuable resources. It however, holds the Jewish people. The world knows that getting the land is meaningless, it is getting the Jew that will be the victory for the forces of evil. However, if the Jew dies they die too as their survival depends on this constant struggle because without it they will lose the meaning and purpose of their existence. And so it goes, a never ending struggle which is the very essence of life as we know it."

Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud al-Zahar, a senior Hamas leader who is the new Palestinian top diplomat, on Saturday defended Hamas' ultimate goal of destroying Israel and founding an Islamic state. "I dream of hanging a huge map of the world on the wall at my Gaza home which does not show Israel on it," he said. "Our dream [is] to have our independent state on all historic Palestine (including Israel)." "This dream will become real one day. Jew Hating Cartoons Skyrocket in Arab Press

When in doubt, blame the Joooooooooos. Don't even think of printing  cartoons depicting anything evoking the truth about Islam, but the Jews are fair game and the band plays on.

Arab press more anti-Semitic than ever

The Muhammad cartoon controversy greatly increased the amount of anti-Semitic material in Arab and Muslim newspapers , according to a report issued by the Anti-Defamation League over the weekend.

The report highlighted cartoons and opinion pieces that demonized Jews, Israel and the Holocaust in media across the Arab world and in Iran.

The publications cited depicted Jews in "outrageous and deeply anti-Semitic caricatures and themes, including anti-Semitic conspiracy theories of Jews plotting to control US foreign policy and dominate the world," the report said.

For example, in the government daily Al-Ittihad from the United Arab Emirates, a cartoon of a Jew holding the world at bay with a gun labeled "the Holocaust" was published on January 24. And, in an apparent reference to the Muhammad cartoons, on February 16 the Bahraini Akhbar al-Khalij ran a picture of an inkpot marked with a Star of David accompanied by a pen writing "cartoons harming Allah's messenger."

While anti-Semitic tropes have long filled the Arab media, ADL Israel office spokesman Arieh O'Sullivan said the intensity of such material "skyrocketed" when Muslim rage exploded over the controversial Muhammad depictions carried in the Danish press and elsewhere.

MEMRI claims to be an independent nonpartisan research institution. One of the co-founders of the organization, Yigal Carmon, is a retired Israeli military intelligence Colonel. Checking the MEMRI website, I found it served up blatant, unbalanced propaganda and was littered with inflammatory articles aimed to incite hate and bigotry toward any person whom MEMRI considers anti-Israeli or anti-Zionist.

Oh how they despise the truth tellers.

Academics as well as professional journalists have repeatedly censured the organization's quality and integrity. Brian Whitaker of the Guardian questioned the honesty of some "translations" posted by MEMRI. Whitaker, specifically, referred to an interview with the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Ekrima Sabri by Al-Ahram Al-Arabi in Oct. 2000 - the same interview quoted by the ADL, the AJC and Carroll.

Whoa. I thought I was reading Al Jyzra.

Ekrima Sabri, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine, the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League sprang into action to disrupt the visit. Both groups immediately sent letters accusing the Grand Mufti of being anti-Semitic and asking co-sponsors to withdraw their support. A press release was sent to the media denouncing the visit. The finishing touches were in News columns by Vincent Carroll (March 7) and Dave Kopel (March 11) that simply seconded the pro-Israeli lobby sentiment. All of their "evidence" seemed to be a regurgitation of the same quotes and accusations. This leads me to suppose that the critics either carbon-copied each other's statements or that they acquired most of their "translation" from one special source: The Middle East Media Research Institute.

Sabri's actions are well documented here. The following excerpts from the weekly Friday sermon delivered by Palestinian Authority [PA] appointed "Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine" Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, at the Al-Aqsa  Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on July 11, 1997. The sermon was broadcast on the PA's official radio station, Voice of Palestine.

"Oh Allah, destroy America, for she is ruled by Zionist Jews...

"Allah will paint the White House black!  Clinton is fulfilling his father's will to identify with Israel...

"The Muslims say to Britain, to France and to all the infidel nations that Jerusalem is Arab.  We shall not respect anyone else's wishes regarding her.  The only relevant party is the Islamic nation, which will not allow infidel nations to interfere...

"The homes the Jews are building will become Arab property, with Allah's help...

"Allah shall take revenge on behalf of his prophet against the colonialist settlers who are sons of monkeys and pigs....Forgive us, Muhamad, for the acts of these sons of monkeys and pigs, who sought to harm your sanctity."

Let's take a look at the Muslim "author" of this piece of trash run by the  Rocky Mountain News (hometown paper of  Ward Churchill). Rima Barakat,  a Palestinian Muslim has said of the Danish  Cartoons here,

The cartoons were very offensive, but we have to rise above this and recognize we have challenges as Muslims that are greater than cartoons.'

Challenges? Like what? Barakat  has done 'workshops' on the "Palestinian Right to Return" aka a ruse for the elimination of Israel.  This workshop, btw, was part of  the same two day conference  as the Cindy and Craig Corrie performance workshop, parents of Rachel Corrie.

Clearly Rima would like to discredit MEMRI, arguably the most significant,  critical sourcea of intel to the lay West. MEMRI pulls back the curtain. We finally have access to what is being broadcast in Arabic to the often cited Arab Street in the MIddle East.

Apparently The Rocky Mountain News is a willing tool to the evil propagandists. Shame on you, dogs. They take their cues from the big boys eh?

According to Mearsheimer and Walt, the Lobby (they always use a capital L) is so vast it unites not just Jews but "prominent Christian evangelicals like Gary Bauer, Jerry Falwell, Ralph Reed, and Pat Robertson, as well as Dick Armey and     Tom DeLay," not to mention a group they charmingly dub "neoconservative gentiles," such as "John Bolton, the late Wall Street Journal editor Robert Bartley, former Secretary of Education William Bennett, former U.N. Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick, and columnist George Will." The Lobby also infected the policies of the Clinton administration and dictates policy not just at magazines like this one, but also at the New York Times and most think tanks in Washington. In short, anyone of significance who has ever disagreed with Mearsheimer and Walt's neorealist foreign policy prescriptions is suspect, especially the Jews.

In real life, of course, the individuals and groups they identify have divergent and in some cases mutually hostile views about the conduct of U.S. foreign policy. Hawks when it comes to the Middle East tend to be hawkish about the rest of the world, too. Many of the Iraq interventionists also backed intervention on behalf of Bosnian Muslims, not to mention U.S. aid and comfort to Tibetan Buddhists, Confucians in Taiwan, and animists in Rwanda. Israeli views, for that matter, are all over the map about what the Bush administration is and should be up to in the Middle East and Iraq. Honest scholars of U.S. policy in the Middle East will be amused to learn that the word     OPEC appears only once in the 83-page paper and that "AIPAC and its allies . . . have no serious opponents in the lobbying world." Men perspire and ladies glow, goes the adage. So Arabs, we suppose, don't lobby, they just bestow gifts, like the $20 million Saudi prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abd al-Aziz Al-Saud recently gave to the Kennedy School.

But really: Scholars who uncritically offer as evidence for their thesis a malicious blog by the Nation's Eric Alterman purporting to identify 61 "columnists and commentators who can be counted upon to support Israel reflexively and without qualification" hardly merit a serious rebuttal. Mearsheimer and Walt are following a well-worn, yet still slippery trail. As our contributor Stephen Schwartz likes to say, there is never anything new in the inventory at the Anti-Jew Store.

Hamas Festival Promotes Terror and Violence Among Children

The Hamas terror organization, which will take control of the Palestinian Authority this week, has been promoting the use of children to perpetrate violence and terror.

The Hamas placed pictures of children in combat roles and combat dress on its web site for one week. The pictures were taken at a “Palestinian Children’s Festival” in Yemen. The Yeminite press reported on the festival. Yemen News said, “A Hamas representative [in Yemen] Jamal Issa … stated that the Palestinian children fight alongside the adults in the resistance." The pictures, reproduced below, can also be seen on the website of Palestinian Media Watch, or on a website reporting on news and events in the Palestinian Authority.

This picture shows a girl wearing a sash with the name Reem Riyashi on it. Reem Riyashi was a woman suicide terrorist who killed four Israelis.

Israel better snap out of their pre-election apathy and weigh their candidates very carefully. This is the most dangerous time in modern Israel's history.

 

Suicidal, Antisemitic Churches May Burn in ....

Consoling the Cartoon Mob

As angry Muslim rioters sent Christians to a martyr's death during last month's riots over cartoons depicting Muhammad, leftist-led Christian groups in the West chose to console the murderers.

[...]many left-leaning church groups such as the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches responded with indignation about the Danish newspaper's publication of the cartoons -- with nary a word about their persecuted co-religionists.

The National Council of Churches (NCC) of the U.S.A. reacted by standing in "solidarity" with U.S. Islamic groups, who "exercised disciplined restraint," i.e., by not rioting or killing Americans over the cartoons.

"In the context of a widespread and growing Islamophobia in both Europe and the United States, the offense is not only an affront to deeply held religious convictions, but an irresponsible case of cultural stereotyping," Premawardhana solemnly intoned. "We applaud the Norwegian press for its courage to offer an apology to the world-wide Muslim community and lift up their example for others to follow."

With similar equanimity, a statement from the Swiss-based World Council of Churches' assembly in Brazil last month shared the pain of Muslims distressed over the cartoons, but did not mention the Christians assaulted in the Muslim riots.

"As people of faith we understand the pain caused by the disregard of something considered precious to faith," the WCC declared. "We deplore the publications of the cartoons. We also join with the voices of many Muslim leaders in deploring the violent reactions to the publications."

The WCC grabbed the opportunity to wax philosophic over the cartoon issue. "The real tension in our world is not between religions and beliefs but between aggressive, intolerant and manipulative secular and religious ideologies," the church council lamented. "Such ideologies are used to legitimize the use of violence, the exclusion of minorities and political domination." We can be fairly sure that the "ideologies" most distressing to the WCC are not extreme Islam but conservative Christianity, Zionism, and U.S. foreign policy.

The Anti-Semitism of the Presbyterian Church, USA

With the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA scheduled to convene in June for the first time since the 2004 GA passed a notorious anti-Israel divestment resolution, supporters and detractors of  divestment are discussing whether the Church’s decision was anti-Semitic, or – somehow -  anti-Israel without being anti-Semitic. [Strawman, anti Israel is antiJ ew- Atlas] Curiously, despite the storm caused by the divestment vote, most Presbyterians remain unaware of the extent to which the PCUSA leadership has involved itself in old-fashioned theological anti-Semitism.

The anti-Semitic alliances undertaken by the national church are particularly surprising  in light of the well-known open-minded and unbiased attitudes of the overwhelming majority of Presbyterians.

One of the resolutions passed at the 2004 General Assembly included a list of recommended theological “resources.” The most troubling “resource” on the list is the Sabeel Center for Liberation Theology. Presbyterians are familiar with liberation theology, an approach that emerged after the Second Vatican Council, focusing on Jesus as liberator of the poor and oppressed. Fact-finding or fiction-finding pilgrimages?

Beware any Christian pilgrimage which includes a ‘fact-finding mission’! ‘Fact-finding missions’ and propaganda campaigns feature in no Christian pilgrimages anywhere except the Holy Land. Lourdes, Guadalupe, Santiago de Compostela, Fatima, Walsingham – no politicized ‘fact-finding’ or exposure to ‘indigenous’ Christians there. When I visited Walsingham, many of my fellow pilgrims were of African origin, and an offer of a chance to meet ‘indigenous’ (presumably white English) Christians in the area would have looked like racism.

It’s gotten worse. Before we had hope. We told ourselves, they’re unaware. If we can get them to look at this clearly, we can persuade them. Now we’ve persuaded them, and they do nothing.
The level of appeasement is depressing: every time the Muslims get angry, the French trip over themselves to calm their passions. It’s far worse now. I am losing hope for France.
Even the French communities in good neighborhoods, with fancy Kosher restaurants nearby, are feeling the cold wind blow.
Now, in market places, in schools, even when it doesn’t involve immigrants, Jew is used as an epithet. You can even call a Chinese “dirty Jew” if you want to insult him.

A few Jewish students went to a meeting on Palestine at one of the more radical campuses in Paris, Jussieu. The feral hatreds, the wild enthusiasm for Hamas, the loud consensus that Israel should not exist… one has a sense that the morally revolting behavior that Oriana Fallaci denounced in September 2001 is alive and well at the French fac. There are still enthusiasts of indiscriminate Arab aggression, people for whom the Palestinians are a chosen people whom one loves and from whom one demands no restraint. And in the rest of Europe, is it the same? Are global Jihadi forces welcomed and redoubled by the anti-Zionist left all over Europe? Can the continent survive such madness? hat tip Drea

The Atlas Interview: Phyllis Chesler, "Daring Lover of the Truth"

Ex-left wing goddess, one time Muslim bride, anti-cultural relativist, and as Bat Ye'or called her "daring lover of the truth". I was unfamiliar with Phyllis Chesler until I heard her speak at The The Middle East & Academic Integrity on the American Campus Conference At Columbia University over a year ago. Her remarks blew me away and  the more she revealed the louder she was heckled by Pro-Palestinian inciters in the room. Inciters, thugs  - these fools had their phones play loud music, their walkie talkies go off , but Chesler never flinched, stumbled or faltered. She gave it right back and made sure her story was told. I subsequently have written about her numerous times and strongly recommend you review her extensive body of work. Brave, brilliant, and sagacious, I jumped at the chance to interview her.

If one does not believe that America "deserved" 9/11; if one does not view America as the true "terrorist"; if one does not believe that Arabs and Muslims are being persecuted in America for "racist" reasons; and if one does not simultaneously believe that the Jews are "imagining" or "exaggerating" anti-Semitism — then one is not welcome on such list-serv groups. On the other hand, the "Left" is aggressively secular and anti-religious; considers pornography to be "protected" hate speech; considers prostitution and trafficking to be forms of "sex work" which should be de-criminalized or legalized; views paternal sole-custody of children as the feminist solution to the problems that mothers have when they juggle child care and career responsibilities; believes that men and women are actually the "same"; has absolutely no foreign policy except that of opposing whatever President Bush and America do or ever have done — they really might as well be French; and has no universal feminist policy vis-à-vis jihadic Islam and its Muslim victims. The "right" has opposite views on these subjects. Although some "right-wingers" have diverse views on abortion, civil rights for gay people, the role of multi-national corporations in a time of war, the importance of intellectual and ideological diversity; the dangers of appeasing the Islam, etc. there are few "left wingers" who are at all diverse on their issues.

Volokh Takes The Neocon to Task on Harvard Culpability in Walt-Gate

UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh takes the Neocon to task for the recent post “Harvard Running From its Own Dean’s Report”. Volokh, whom I have known for years and have the highest respect for, does not disagree with the Neocon’s analysis of Mr. Stephen Walt’s paper, however, he strongly disagrees with my assessment of Harvard’s culpability in the matter as an institution. The Neocon must bow to Professor Volokh’s Superior knowledge in this area, although I do put up a good fight. Here is the exchange.

And frankly, respect reshmect (!) Mr. V is splitting hairs and citing "insider trade knowledge" when in fact the world at large is attributing that report to Harvard.

Camera organization has good news to report! A controversial research report, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, by Harvard professor Stephen Walt and University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer, that criticizes the “Israel lobby” for allegedly distorting the foreign policy of the United States to the detriment of U.S. interests, and which has been severely criticized as inaccurate and wrongheaded, no longer sports the Harvard or Kennedy School of Government logos that previously appeared on the report's front page.

In a further sign that Harvard and the University of Chicago are distancing themselves from Professors Walt and Mearsheimer, the report also no longer includes the pro-forma disclaimer used for all other research reports on that Harvard website. In its place is a far stronger disclaimer, in much larger type. The original disclaimer read:

The views expressed in the KSG Faculty Research Working Paper Series are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of the John F. Kennedy School of Government or Harvard University. Copyright belongs to the author(s). Papers may be downloaded for personal use only.

The new, much more prominent disclaimer reads:

The two authors of this Working Paper are solely responsible for the views expressed in it. As academic institutions, Harvard University and the University of Chicago do not take positions on the scholarship of individual faculty, and this article should not be interpreted or portrayed as reflecting the official position of either institution.

It is especially notable that while the original disclaimer merely stated that Harvard did not necessarily share the views expressed in the article, the revised disclaimer goes much further, stating that:

1. The two authors are "solely responsible" for the content.
2. This article should not be interpreted or portrayed as reflecting the official position of either institution [Harvard or Univ. of Chicago].
3. The institutions take no position on the "scholarship of individual faculty."

As both universities, in fact, routinely take positions on the "scholarship" of faculty members --  regarding tenure, hiring, salaries and so on -- the addition of wording apparently distancing the universities from the document's "scholarship" suggests a devastating vote of no confidence by Harvard and the University of Chicago in the work of Professors Walt and Mearsheimer.

Harvard and the University of Chicago should take the obvious next step and remove the paper from their websites pending correction of numerous errors of fact, logic and omission.

Thank Harvard executives for removing the Harvard and Kennedy School logo from the online report and for putting a more clear disclaimer on the work, disassociating Harvard from the shoddy paper.  However, Harvard should remove the report entirely from its website until the authors fix its manifold deficiencies.

 

The authors' report is a deep embarrassment to Harvard University and the Kennedy School. While Mearsheimer and Walt are free to make any assertions they like, no matter how baseless, Harvard University should have nothing to do with such shoddy, biased work.

The report co-authored by University of Chicago Professor Mearsheimer should be a deep embarrassment to the University of Chicago  . Palestinian/Al Qaeda Plot foiled In Israel

Israel charges Palestinians with Qaeda attack plot

JERUSALEM, March 21 (Reuters) - An Israeli military court charged two Palestinians on Tuesday with membership of al Qaeda and plotting a suicide bombing and car bomb attack for the group.

Charge sheets published by the Israeli military spokesman said Azzam Abu-Alades and Balal Hafanawi, both 19 and from the Nablus area of the occupied West Bank, were recruited to al Qaeda last year in Jordan. Both were charged by a military tribunal in the West Bank with conspiring to commit murder, membership of an illegal group, illegal possession of weapons and military training with al Qaeda.

The charges say they had plotted a suicide bombing at a pizzeria in a Jewish neighbourhood in Jerusalem to be followed by a car bomb shortly afterwards. They are also accused of recruiting potential suicide bombers to carry out the attacks.

A terrorist by any other name (al qaeda, Hamas, Hizbollah,  Palestinian Islamic Jihad, whichever hat they choose that day) is still as evil. Connect the dots. This is one large global war on Islamofascism.

Bush Says United States Will Defend Israel
President Bush on Monday reaffirmed the United States' vow to defend Israel against attacks from Iran, which is pursuing nuclear arms and has threatened to destroy the Jewish state . "The threat from Iran is, of course, their stated objective to destroy our strong ally Israel," Bush said to an audience in Cleveland.  "It's a threat to world peace; it's a threat, in essence, to a strong alliance. I made it clear, I'll make it clear again, that we will use military might to protect our ally, Israel."  The U.N. Security Council is now considering how to stop Iran's quest for atomic weapons. Meanwhile, Congress is considering the Iran Freedom Support Act, legislation that would tighten American sanctions on Iran to choke off funds it could use for atomic work. Urge your lawmakers to support this legislation.

The paper has won praise from anti-Semite and white supremacist David Duke, is being distributed by the Palestine Liberation Organization’s mission to Washington, and has been lauded by a senior member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization.    
Less thrilled with the Harvard dean’s work is one of his colleagues, Marvin Kalb, a lecturer in public policy at the Kennedy School and a senior fellow and founding director at the school’s Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy.

“I do not regard this as a Kennedy School Research Paper, because it clearly does not meet the academic standards of a Kennedy School research paper,” Mr. Kalb, who is also the faculty chair for the Kennedy School’s Washington programs, told The New York Sun in an e-mail yesterday after reading the paper.     “It is a rather sensational example of ‘realist’ journalism,” he continued. “My sense is that Dean Walt would be better advised to stick to scholarship and leave journalism to journalists, who generally check their ‘facts’ before publishing them.”

Now I ask you, look at the brain trust and ask yourself, who would I want on my team?

Dhimmitude: Media's Silence on Increasing Muslim Violence

Like many news junkies, I've noticed that stories putting Muslims in a bad light tend to be sketchy and underreported. A minor example is this comment by the head Muslim chaplain of New York City's prisons: "The greatest terrorists in the world occupy the White House." In Manhattan, remarks like that are nearly as conventional as talk about the weather, so the controversy was fairly small.

It might have been larger if the media had shown any interest in other points the imam made. For instance that Muslim prisoners are being tortured in Manhattan, and that Muslims must be "hard against the kaffir" (i.e., nasty to infidels), which presumably city employees are not paid to recommend. (By the way, why are clergymen city employees at all?)

A much bigger example is the misleadingly low-key reporting of the Ilan Halimi murder in Paris. We now know that Halimi was killed as a classic expression of Jew hatred. But with so much evasiveness and misdirection by police, government and press, it took a month to get that fact clearly on the table. Halimi, a cell phone salesman, was kidnapped and held for ransom by a mostly Muslim gang. He was horrifically tortured for three weeks, then slain. From time to time, neighbors had come to watch the torture or to participate in it. Nobody called the gendarmes.

At first the government and the press presented this story as a straightforward kidnapping for ransom. A spokesman said Jewishness may have played a role simply because the kidnappers thought Jews were rich. AP and UPI, in feeds to the United States, barely mentioned the possibility of anti-Semitism. After arrests were made, the BBC worked hard to avoid using the word "Muslim," though verses from the Quran were recited during the torture.

The Los Angeles Times account of Feb. 28 shows how hard candor can be. It reported that the gang made hundreds of abusive phone calls to Jews and had systematically tried to kidnap Jews. But the reporters wrote this: "Rather than a premeditated anti-Semitic murder, it seems a more complex product of criminality and dysfunction in the narrow world of thug culture: a poisonous mentality that designates Jews as enemies along with other faces of 'outsiders.'"

Oh, please. If whites had tortured and killed a black man, I doubt that reporters would be carrying on about how complex and unpremeditated it all was. They would just say it was a lynching.

In an excellent article last week, Colin Nickerson of The Boston Globe said the crime was being attributed to a "predominantly Muslim youth gang" notorious for "virulent anti-Semitism." The gang's taunting phone calls to Halimi's father were filled with anti-Semitic slurs and a rabbi had been told, "We have a Jew." The Globe said hatred of Jews is now a hallmark of what's cool in France, even among young immigrants from non-Muslim nations. Very strong article. No dancing around, just good reporting.

Governments and the media often avoid calling terrorism by its proper name. Presumably the idea is to calm the public and avoid embarrassing Muslims. It took nine months for the

FBI and the government to admit that the attack on L.A. airport in 2002 was a terrorist operation. We had been told that personal reasons might explain why a pro-Palestinian gunman, who openly admitted the desire to kill civilians, would kill two people at an El Al counter.

The same verbal dance took place recently when an Iranian student rented a large van and tried to run down and kill as many students as possible in North Carolina. He said he was attempting to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world." But the university tried desperately to avoid the obvious T-word.

Tony Blankley wrote a Washington Times column, March 8, on the underreporting of Muslim violence. He said British politicians tell him there is increasing radical Muslim street violence, explicitly motivated by radical Islam, but not reported or characterized as such. Blankley said rioting Moroccan youths in Antwerp went on a rampage, beating up reporters and destroying cars, but police were instructed not to arrest or stop them. A database search shows little reporting on Antwerp riots.

The scary riots in Australia last December, pitting Lebanese immigrants against native whites, were well-covered. But nobody seems quite sure that we are getting the full story about other serious disturbances. From time to time the Internet carries reports of riots that don't make the newspapers, but they are mostly uncheckable.

Suppressing news, whether out of multicultural deference or fear, is a perilous business. We can't know how to react to upheavals if we aren't told about them.

On Friday I eviscerated  Harvard’s  Kennedy  School  of  Government  for their Jew hating diatribe against Israel, American Jews and the public affairs committee that lobbies to save Israel from the very real existential threat posed by her every surrounding neighbor. The paper, however, is winning unqualified support by David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Klu Klux Klan, who  claims to be vindicated by a Harvard Dean.  That says it all. doesn't it? Duke, a former Louisiana state legislator and one-time Klu Klux Klan leader, called the paper “a great step forward,” but he said he was “surprised” that the Kennedy School would publish the report.”

A paper recently co-authored by the academic dean of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government about the allegedly far-reaching influence of an “Israel lobby” is winning praise from white supremacist David Duke.

    The Palestine Liberation Organization mission to Washington is distributing the paper, which also is being hailed by a senior member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization.

    But the paper,“The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy,” by the Kennedy School’s Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago, is meeting with a more critical reception from many of those it names as part of the lobby.The 83-page “working paper” claims a network of journalists, think tanks, lobbyists, and largely Jewish officials have seized the foreign policy debate and manipulated America to invade Iraq. Included in this network, the authors say, are the editors of the New York Times, the scholars at the Brookings Institution, students at Columbia, “pro-Israel” senior officials in the executive branch, and “neoconservative gentiles” including columnist George Will.

  “I have read about the report and read one summary already, and I am surprised how excellent it is,”he said in an e-mail.“It is quite satisfying to see a body in the premier American University essentially come out and validate every major point I have been making since even before the war even started.” Duke added that “the task before us is to wrest control of America’s foreign policy and critical junctures of media from the Jewish extremist Neocons that seek to lead us into what they expectantly call World War IV.”

Even Allan Dershowitz with whom I frequently diverge states the painfully obvious.

A professor at Harvard Law School, Alan Dershowitz, whom the authors call an “apologist” for Israel, said he found much of the paper to be “trash.” He said, “It could have been written by Pat Buchanan, by David Duke, Noam Chomsky, and some of the less intelligent members of Hamas.An intelligent member of Hamas would not have made these mistakes.”  

  Those mistakes for Mr. Dershowitz include, for example, the assertion that “There is no question,for example,that many Al Qaeda leaders, including bin Laden, are motivated by Israel’s presence in Jerusalem and the plight of the Palestinians,” which Mr. Dershowitz says “is just absurd.”

  And Martin Peretz, a retired lecturer at Harvard, who is editor of The New Republic, a magazine named in the report as one of those that “zealously defend Israel at every turn,” said, “It is easier to attribute disloyalty to Jews than to question the loyalty of Islamists.This is really questioning the loyalty of Jews, that is what this is about.

Let's take these points one by one:

• Israel is weak and surrounded by enemies. To the contrary, they say, Israel is by far the strongest regional power. Further, "Egypt and Jordan have signed peace treaties with it, and Saudi Arabia has offered to do so." This gives the Saudis far too much credit. True, as we noted in 2002, then Crown Prince Abdullah (now king) told the New York Times' Thomas Friedman that he was amenable to establishing full diplomatic relations, conditioned on Israeli withdrawal from the disputed territories (occupied by Egypt and Jordan before 1967 and Israel since). But Riyadh quickly made clear that it was unwilling even to talk to Jerusalem until after such a withdrawal. As we wrote then, "The Saudi position, in other words, amounts to: Give us land now, and maybe we'll give you peace later." It is true that Israel is the regional superpower, and that Cairo and Amman have signed peace treaties with the Jewish state, but it seems undeniable--and Walt and Mearsheimer do not deny it--that none of this would be true absent U.S. support for Israel. Thus their reasoning is circular: Israel doesn't deserve U.S. support because it has received U.S. support.
  
  
• Israel is a democracy. This they concede, but they also claim that "some aspects of Israeli democracy are at odds with core American values." In particular, they claim that Arab citizens of Israel "are treated as second-class citizens" and note that "a recent Israeli government commission found that Israel behaves in a 'neglectful and discriminatory' manner towards them." Yet even acknowledging that Israeli democracy is flawed, its political system is still vastly superior to those of its adversaries. Israeli Arabs enjoy more political and civil liberties than citizens of just about any Arab country; and the only Arab lands that come anywhere close to being democracies are Lebanon, Iraq and the disputed Palestinian territories--the last two only because of American intervention. That the Israeli government criticizes its own treatment of Arabs is a testament to its democracy; can anyone imagine, say, the Saudi regime offering similar criticisms of its treatm ent of Shiites, non-Muslims or women? American democracy, too, is not without its flaws. During World War II, for instance, black Americans were still disfranchised, and innocent Japanese-Americans were rounded up and put in camps. It does not follow that America was no better than Nazi Germany.
  
  
• Jews deserve a homeland because of their past oppression. Walt and Mearsheimer go so far as to allow that Israel's creation "was undoubtedly an appropriate response to the long record of crimes against Jews." But, they say, "it also brought about fresh crimes against a largely innocent third party: the Palestinians." They lay the plight of the Palestinians entirely at Israel's door, failing to acknowledge the Arab states' vast culpability. The Arabs rejected the 1947 U.N. partition of Palestine, which would have created a Palestinian Arab state including territories beyond the present-day West Bank and Gaza strip. The Arabs immediately declared war on the nascent Jewish state--a war in which Israel gained more territory--and they waged war again in 1967 and 1973. All Arab states except Jordan refuse to allow Palestinians to become citizens, preferring to let them linger as stateless refugees. Nor do the authors acknowledge that since the creation of Israel many Jews who settled there were fle eing persecution in Arab lands and (since 1979) Iran. Whereas Israel has 1.3 million Arab citizens, no Arab country except Morocco has more than a handful of Jewish ones.
  
  
• Israel is morally superior to its adversaries. Here they cite various alleged abuses by Israel during its war of independence and claim that "Israel's subsequent conduct has often been brutal, belying any claim to moral superiority." Even if we concede all the criticisms of Israel, they do not belie "any claim to moral superiority," only to moral perfection. Evaluating which side is morally superior would require a comparative analysis; the only thing Walt and Mearsheimer say about Arab misconduct is that "the Palestinian resort to terrorism is wrong but it isn't surprising. The Palestinians believe they have no other way to force Israeli concessions." No such excuses are offered for Israel's purported misdeeds.

Walt and Mearsheimer's method of analysis presumes Israel's guilt. Every past or present Israeli transgression is evidence of its wickedness, whereas Arab ones, if they are acknowledged at all, are "understandable." This approach paints a highly misleading picture. It is anti-Semitic in effect if not in intent.

UN envoy: It's all the Jews' fault

Almost completely disregarding Palestinian Arab aggression against Israel's Jews, a United Nations envoy has sought to lay the blame for regional conflict at the doorstep of the Jewish state by misrepresenting and exaggerating Israel's defensive measures and isolated acts of frustration.

In a special report prepared for next week's annual meeting of the UN Human Rights Commission, South African lawyer John Dugard charged:

"It seems that settlers are able to terrorize Palestinians and destroy their trees and crops with impunity."

What he failed to mention, however, are the innumerable stoning, shooting and bombing attacks carried out against the Jewish settlers by the hostile Arab population surrounding them.  Often those attacks are launched from the cover of olive groves and fruit orchards, prompting frustrated and threatened Israelis to take matters into their own hands.

HAMAS  has formed a government with no moderates in it. Theyhave refused to renounce their vow to destroy Israel and have refused to adhere to or respect previous "peace" treaties.

The violent Hamas government must be met with crippling economic sanctions. The World Bank has warned these sanctions would devastate poverty-stricken Palestinian territories but it doesn't have to be this way. Bread lines are already beginning to form. In order to be a member of the civilized world, certain civilized behavor is de rigeuer. The Jews must be free to live and raise their children to live, learn, contribute..........does anyone really believe that Israelis want their children to go straight into the army for three years right after high school. Conventional wisdom also insists that the US is hated by Muslims because it is pro-Israel. [...]  But is it not possible that the reverse is true – that Israel is hated because it is pro-American?

When I raised that possibility in Ramadan-night debates, I was at first greeted with deafening silence. Soon, however, some interlocutors admitted that my suggestion was, perhaps, not quite fanciful.

Let us consider some facts.

If Muslims hate the US because it backs Israel which, in turn, is oppressing Muslims in Palestine, then why don't other oppressed Muslims benefit from the same degree of solidarity from their co-religionists?

During Ramadan, news came that more than 500 Muslims had been killed in clashes with the police in southern Thailand. At least 80 were suffocated to death in police buses under suspicious circumstances.

The Arab and the Iranian press, however, either ignored the event or relegated it to inside pages. To my knowledge, only one Muslim newspaper devoted an editorial to it. And only two newspapers mentioned that Thailand was building a wall to cordon off almost two million Muslims in southern Thailand – a wall higher and longer than the controversial "security fence" Israel is building.

Muslim states have never supported Pakistan on Kashmir because most were close to India in the so-called nonaligned movement while Pakistan was a US ally in CENTO and SEATO.

When Hindu nationalists demolished the Ayodhya Mosque, no one thought it necessary to inflame Muslim passions.

Nor has a single Muslim nation recognized the republic set up by Muslim Turks in northern Cyprus. The reason? Greece has always sided with the Arabs on Palestine and plays occasional anti-American music while Turkey is a US ally.

When the Serbs massacred 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica 10 years ago, not a ripple disturbed the serene calm of Muslim opinion. At that time, the mullahs of Teheran and Col. Muammar Gaddafi of Libya were in cahoots with Slobodan Milosevic, supplying him with oil and money because Yugoslavia held the presidency of the so-called nonaligned movement. Belgrade was the only European capital to be graced with a state visit by Ali Khamenehi, the mullah who is now the Supreme Guide of the Islamic Republic.

And what about Chechnya which is, by any standard, the Muslim nation that has most suffered in the past two centuries? Last October the Muslim summit in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, gave a hero's welcome to Vladimir Putin, the man who has presided over the massacre of more Chechens than anyone in any other period in Russian history.

Right now there are 22 active conflicts across the globe in which Muslims are involved. Most Muslims have not even heard of most of them because those conflicts do not provide excuses for fomenting hatred against the United States.

Next time you hear someone say the US was in trouble in the Muslim world because of Israel, remember that things may not be that simple.

Where is the Harvard paper on the over 2,000,000 dead and 30,000 enslaved by the Islamic government in Sudan. Is Israel culpable there too?

What followed was three days of killing and burning churches.

Around the world Islamic militants are engaging in a holy war against the infidels - from Coptic Christians in Egypt and the Dinkas in the Sudan, to Hindus in Kashmir, Bahais in Iran, Catholics in the southern Philippines and Christians in East Timor.

In Sudan, the Islamic militants impose slavery on captured Dinkas - but wherever radical Islam is in power, it subjugates people it regards as infidels. The Coalition for the Defense of Human Rights, an organization supporting those persecuted by militant Islam, argues that "radical Islamism is a world ideology, fielding a world terror-army, which oppresses millions with a racist ideology" that deems non-Muslims less than fully human.

The Harvard paper is a disgusting blood libel and every word fallacious. Blaming AIPAC? Essentially if you blame AIPAC, you are blaming me and every other believer in live free or die.

Harvard: Support of Israel, Democracy Jeopardizes U.S. Security

Stephen M. Walt, Dean of Harvard's Kennedy School, and John Mearsheimer, a professor of political science and co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, have published a paper on "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy" which blames support of Israel and the push for democracy for jeopardizing U.S. security. The paper aims to roll back the U.S. - Israel relationship, roll back U.S. efforts for the democratization of the Middle East, and end the post-9/11 foreign policy efforts of the Bush Administration.

As The New York Sun writes, "If the Islamists only hate America because of our support for Israel, why are they setting off bombs in Indonesia and Spain, which are hardly in the vanguard of support for Israel? How would abandoning Israel assuage the angry Islamists rather than encouraging them to press on to completing their end goal of making all of America subject to Islamic law?"

Did they expect to release the assassin of an Israeli  cabinet minister to be sanctioned by Israel or the world for that matter. GIVE'EM AID!

Maybe if you stop the aid and they have to work, produce, create for their daily bread they wouldn't have so much time on their hands to kill, maim, kidnap, bomb etc. And don't think for one moment this is not part of the larger war on global terror. Just a thought.........

At the initiative of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a state-run Iranian university held a Holocaust-denial conference this week.

The conference, reported by Iran's official IRIB radio, was held at Isfahan University. It was entitled Holocaust: myth or reality, and was attended by students and faculty. According to the report, it was organized by Khamenei's Isfahan office.

Alireza Soltanshahi, a representative of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who heads the Presidential Office for the Study of the Palestinian Issue, addressed the gathering, telling participants that, the Holocaust myth has turned into an industry for the Zionists to gain money.

Uni newspaper calls Jews 'bloodsuckers'

THE University of Western Sydney has been enveloped in a race row over a student newspaper article which refers to Jewish people as "bloodsuckers".

An outraged Jewish community has demanded an apology for the "anti-semitic" comments published by student and UWS board member Luke Fomiatti.

Vice Chancellor Janice Reid has been forced to write to almost 40,000 students and staff stating the article - in the university newspaper The Western Onion - was unacceptable.

The front page spread includes anti-Jewish drawings and refers to "a vampire with a Star of David tattoo drinking the blood of a young boy labelled Europe".

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Knoll has written to Mr Fomiatti saying the article sought to "dehumanise Jews by resorting to the offensive language and disgusting illustrations which were a tool of Nazi Germany".

"To say that the Jewish community is appalled by the racist material that appeared on the front page ... is an understatement," Mr Knoll said.

The lead architect tapped to head the $1.7 billion redesign of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center last month hosted the founding meeting of an association of professional building designers considering a boycott against Israel.

   On February 2, Richard Rogers gave his office space for the inaugural meeting of Architects and Planners for Justice in Palestine in his London headquarters.

A statement from the new organization released on February 9 condemns any individual or company working on “occupied territory” as violating their professional ethics and being complicit in promoting “an apartheid system of environmental control.”

The Independent newspaper of London also said the meeting broached the idea of recommending that Israeli architects be kicked out of the International Union of Architects.

Who is responsible for this?

   Javits was one of the Jewish state’s staunchest defenders in the Senate, where he served from 1956 to 1981. In particular, he was one of the toughest voices to oppose the Arab boycott of Israel in the 1970s. In 1986 President Reagan singled out the Jewish lawmaker’s support

Jewish groups and local politicians were enraged when they learned of the involvement of Lord Rogers in the group, which accuses Israel of an “apartheid system of environmental control”.

“His associating with this bigoted view would disqualify him from receiving our tax dollars,” said Malcolm Hoenlein, vice-chairman of the Conference of Major American Jewish Organisations. Lord Rogers hosted the inaugural meeting of some 60 British architects and planners, chaired by his friend Abe Hayeem, in his London office on February 2.

A Candle for Ilan Halimi

Dubai Ports World, the company involved in the UAE port deal, participates in the Arab boycott against Israel.

"Yes, of course the boycott is still in place and is still enforced," Muhammad Rashid a-Din, a staff member of the Dubai Customs Department's Office for the Boycott of Israel, told the The Jerusalem Post in a telephone interview. U.S. law bars firms from complying with such requests or cooperating with attempts by Arab governments to boycott Israel. The U.S. Department of Commerce lists the UAE anti-Israel boycott requirement as a "prohibited boycott condition in an invitation to bid" under examples of boycott requests from the UAE that has been reported to the Office of Antiboycott Compliance. The "prohibited boycott condition" reads:

"Documents to accompany tenders [include] the declaration and Israel boycott certificate. It states the tenderer must accompany his offer with the following, written signed declaration. "We declare that we are a company which is not owned by any companies that have violated the approved rules of the boycott and that we do not own or participate in companies that are in violation of the approved rules of the boycott. Further, we do not have, nor does any of the companies that are considered to be a parent company or a branch of ours, any dealings with any Israeli party, whether directly or indirectly." Furthermore, a certificate issued by the Israel boycott office in UAE confirming that neither the supplier nor the manufacturer are blacklisted, should also be accompanied."

In one instance, according to a Department of Commerce press release, a New York-based exporter paid a $13,500 fine for violating the antiboycott provisions of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The antiboycott provisions of the EAR prohibit U.S. persons from complying with certain requirements of unsanctioned foreign boycotts, including furnishing information about business relationships with or in Israel. In addition, the EAR requires that U.S. persons report their receipt of certain boycott requests to the Department of Commerce.

Importers to the UAE, however, need to comply with the terms of the boycott. In the Frequently Asked Questions area of the Jebel Ali Free Zone Area website, six documents are listed that are required in order to clear an item through the Dubai Customs Department. One of them, called a Certificate of Origin, " is used by customs to confirm the country of origin and needs to be seen by the office which ensures any trade boycotts are enforced ."

Clearly their boycott of Israel would have to end. That's a deal breaker. No fines, no violations, no bullshit. NO BOYCOTT. And that would be a good thing. Changing the way they do business would be a good thing. And yes, we would have to enforce it.

Israel is a great nation. This decades long boycott must be broken. This is how we do it.

France: Halimi's Murder Diabolique and Israel's Silence

France is dead, long live the era of the living dead. Blood suckers.
Naomi Ragen wrote me about Ilan Halimi long before reports appeared in the newspapers and the crime was acknowledged as one more Muslim atrocity against Jews.

Jewish friends in Paris whispered to her in horror at the sheer barbarism of the crime, in which an innocent young man was held for twenty days, found with all his fingers cut off, and burns and bruises over 80% of his body.  Because he was a Jew.

The Jews and other decent French people have taken to the streets of Paris to finally, finally, openly protest Muslim anti Semitism and Nazi-like  barbarism.   But not a peep is heard here in Israel, even though the murderers were connected to a Palestinian terrorist organization.  Because official Israel just doesn't want to acknowledge this has nothing to do with land, or occupation, or any of the other excuses we'd like so much to believe.  It doesn't want to acknowledge that every Jew is now a target, and that Israel is the bull's eye.

Column One: Ilan Halimi and Israel Ilan Halimi's barbarous murder in France should awaken all Jews to the most significant truth of our times: Today, every Jew in the world is on the front lines of war.

As was the case 70 years ago, every Jew today is a target for our enemies, who shout from every soapbox and prove at every opportunity that their goal is the annihilation of the Jewish people. From 1933-1945, the enemy was Nazi Germany. Today, the enemy is political Islam. Its call for jihad aimed at annihilating the Jews and dominating the world is answered by millions of people throughout the world.

Among the lessons of the Holocaust, there is one that is almost never mentioned. That lesson is that it is possible, and indeed fairly easy to exterminate the Jews. The fact that the Holocaust happened proves that it is absolutely possible for the Jewish people to be wiped off the map - just as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hamas leader Khaled Mashal promise.

The story of Ilan Halimi's murder at the hands of a terrorist gang of French Muslims brings to the surface the various pathologies now converging to make the prospect of annihilating all Jews seem possible to our enemies. First, there are the murderers who took such apparent pleasure and felt such pride in the fact that for 20 days they tortured their Jewish hostage to death.

This makes sense. Anti-Semitism in the Muslim dominated suburbs of Paris and other French cities is all-encompassing. As Nidra Poller related in Thursday's Wall Street Journal, "One of the most troubling aspects of this affair is the probable involvement of relatives and neighbors, beyond the immediate circle of the gang [of kidnappers], who were told about the Jewish hostage and dropped in to participate in the torture."

It appears that Ilan Halimi's murderers had some connection to Hamas. Tuesday, French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said that police found propaganda published by the Palestinian Charity Committee or the CBSP at the home of one of the suspects. The European Jewish Press reported this week that Israel has alleged that the organization is a front group for Palestinian terrorists and that in August 2003 the US government froze the organization's US bank accounts, accusing it of links with Hamas.

Halimi's family alleges that throughout the 20 days of Ilan's captivity, the French police refused to take the anti-Semitic motivations of the kidnappers into account. The investigators insisted on viewing his kidnap as a garden variety kidnap-for-ransom criminal case, which they said generally involves no threat to the life of the captive. The police maintained their refusal to investigate the anti-Semitic motivations of the kidnappers in spite of the fact that in their e-mail and telephone communications with Ilan's family, his captors repeatedly referred to his Judaism, and on at least one occasion recited verses from the Koran while Ilan was heard screaming in agony in the background. The family alleges that if the police had been willing to acknowledge that Ilan was abducted because he was Jewish, they would have recognized that his life was in clear and immediate danger and acted with greater urgency.

Like the police, the French government waited an entire week after Ilan was found naked, with cuts and burns over 80 percent of his body by a train station in suburban Paris, before acknowledging the anti-Semitic nature of the crime. According to the press reports, the French government was at least partially motivated to suppress the issue of anti-Semitism by its fear of inflaming the passions of the French Muslims who make up between 10 to 13 percent of the French population and comprise a quarter of the population under 25 years old. And yet, now that the French government has acknowledged that the crime was motivated by hatred of Jews, it is behaving responsibly in pursuing the murderers and decrying the attack on French Jewry.

In addition to the exterminationist anti-Semitism of Ilan's murderers and the unwillingness of the French authorities to acknowledge the anti-Semitic nature of the crime until it was too late, there is one more aspect of the case that bears note. That is Israel's reaction to the atrocity. In short, there has been absolutely no official Israeli reaction to the abduction, torture and murder of a Jew in France by a predominantly Muslim terrorist gang that kidnapped, tortured and murdered him because he was a Jew.

No Israeli government minister, official or spokesman has condemned his murder. No Israeli official has demanded that the French authorities investigate why the police refused to take anti-Semitism into account during Ilan's captivity. No Israeli official flew to Paris to participate in Ilan's funeral or any other memorial or demonstration in his memory.

The number of Anti-Semitic acts in France has reached a level not seen since World War II.

We think that America, faithful to its tradition of offering asylum to people facing danger in their own country should open its doors to them. We ask the Congress to pass a legislation that would give the status of refugee to French Jews.

The Palestine Solidarity Movement's (PSM) much anticipated 5th annual conference at Georgetown University on Feb 17-19th seemed more subdued than its predecessors. Maybe PSM had learned its lesson. Past conferences had created firestorms of controversy because of their extremist rhetoric and anti-Semitic chants and their open defense of terrorism. But no one should be fooled. The crowd may have been smaller than in the past—only 200 or so students and community activists—and the volume turned down, but the message and agenda were decidedly more radical.  PSM wants the “ethno-religious” Jewish State eliminated.

The largely Arab-American, kaffiya-clad students received a weekend of training in how to   promote "divest from Israel" campaigns, how to influence the media and deceive church groups, how to frame campaigns to demonize Israel and Zionism and to prove that Israel is worse than apartheid South Africa.       

The people under the PSM umbrella were not there to find out how to build peace-directed coalitions through promoting dialogue with pro-Israel advocates around the world.  Nor were they there to learn how to improve the lives of ordinary Palestinians by building hospitals and schools. Real Palestinians seemed almost irrelevant. When an audience member asked whether Palestinians should be consulted about the boycotts, University of Wisconsin Al Awda and Boycott leader Mohammed Abed answered that “Human rights issues are too important.  A human rights group doesn’t wait for a nod [of approval] even from Palestinian civil society.”

The assault on the Jews extends far beyond American academia. The sphere of Jew Hate is multi- pronged, with the World Council of Churches taking a leading role;

The World Council of Churches Assembly, on the other side, is a wide-ranging, global gathering of Christian leaders which took place in Brazil,  is the biggest and most diverse Christian gathering in nearly a decade.

Churches Debate Pro-Palestinian Divestment

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil - A wide-ranging, global gathering of Christian leaders has become a forum for a question that one delegate calls a religious minefield: Should churches use their investment portfolios to protest Israeli policies toward Palestinians? The debate cuts across ethics, interfaith ties and Holy Land politics - and has taken on an even sharper edge since the Church of England approved a motion for "morally responsible investment" earlier this month. It could lead the church to eventually reshuffle its $1.53 billion in stocks away from companies it considers aiding or profiting from Israeli control of Palestinian territories.

Supporters of pro-Palestinian divestment are now seeking more momentum at the biggest and most diverse Christian gathering in nearly a decade: the World Council of Churches assembly of mainline Protestants, Anglicans and Orthodox churches that together represent more than 500 million followers - and billions of dollars in stock holdings. The amount the churches hold in companies targeted by the divestment campaign is just a fraction, so any possible action would be mostly symbolic. But organizers hope to raise the movement's profile by carrying it from college campuses to mainstream churches - nearly all Protestant - as a way to pressure Israel into concessions. Powerful critics stand in the way. Jewish groups are riled by echoes of the anti-apartheid campaign of the 1980s.

They call it a one-sided view of the Israel-Palestinian conflict and complain it smacks of anti-Semitism. Most evangelical Protestants, meanwhile, sympathize with Israeli policies and some believe that biblical prophecy demands Jewish sovereignty over the entire Holy Land.

"The (Church of England) has chosen to take a stand on the politics of the Middle East over which it has no influence, knowing that it will have the most adverse repercussions on a situation over which it has enormous influence, namely Jewish-Christian relations in Britain," wrote the chief rabbi of Britain, Sir Jonathan Sacks, in an article for Friday's edition of the Jewish Chronicle.
