The massive explosion at a train station in the Russian city of Volgograd killed at least 16 people, including a nine-year-old girl and one police officer, the Investigative Committee of Russia said on its website Sunday.
Volgograd, once called Stalingrad, is a major rail hub in the region, and each day thousands of passengers pass through the station, many on their way to Moscow.
The devout bomber used the equivalent of 10 kilograms of TNT and included shrapnel.
The station was packed with people traveling home for New Year's celebrations when the massive explosion tore through the railway station.
Azamat Suleymanov, an officer at the Interior Ministry of Dagestan, said they are fairly certain of the identity of the bomber."For legal reasons we cannot yet say that we are 100 percent sure, but we are almost confident that it was Oksana Aslanova, a Dagestani citizen," he said. "We have her on file. She was a widow whose husband died in a special operation conducted by our forces. She was then married a few times more, always to terrorists."
