This is why I love what I do. Here is a wonderful letter from Atlas reader Michelle: "I am proud to say that my son's school, the Greenfield Hebrew Academy is boycotting Scholastic to Stand With Israel, even though it will cost them $3,000 in funds for their library. I am including the letter the school sent out about it, and the link for donating to support the library and Stand With Israel."
Perhaps Atlas parents out there can call for the cancellation of Scholastic Book fairs at their schools, too.
As you know schools like us around the country use Scholastic Books for their literature needs. You have probably seen the news that Scholastic made a serious error with regards to one of the books they publish. Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt, a title in the Geronimo Stilton series, includes a map of the Middle East that omits Israel. Scholastic is immediately stopping shipment on this title, revising the map, and going back to reprint. However, they have not mentioned pulling books already at stores and other online outlets that contain the erroneous map.
We feel that it is important to maintain the integrity of our mission as a school strongly supportive to Israel and take a stand that demonstrates to the powers that be at Scholastic what an egregious error this was. As a result we have canceled our fall Scholastic Book Fair which was scheduled to take place the week of December 2.
Typically, the fair raises over $3000 for the school so that we can buy two to three hundred additional books for our library. Therefore, we are asking that you stand with us and Israel and consider making a donation to the library in lieu of the book fair purchase so that we are still able to buy great reads for our students.
You may donate either online at http://www.ghacademy.org/index.php/home/donate or by sending a check to the school with a note in the memo field stating that this is a donation for the library.
Thank you for your support and for allowing us to teach our students by example that it is important to stand up for what is right.
