Tonight's Saturday Cinema selection is a salute to all the working girls out there this Labor Day Weekend. Having been a newspaper girl myself, I have a special affection for this brilliant little gem. This snappy, sharp, stylish screen classic is the second version of the Ben Hecht/Charles MacArthur play The Front Page, and it is just delicious.
Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant are in top form. Superb. They don't write dialogue like this anymore, fast, witty, funny and rat-a-tat-tat in this, the "maddest newspaper comedy of our times."
Howard Hawks' superb screwball workplace comedy is one of those classics that manages to convince new viewers of its greatness despite any inflated expectations caused by its sky-high reputation.
"Cary Grant's performance is truly virtuoso -- stunning technique applied to the most challenging material."
"Perhaps the funniest, certainly the fastest talkie comedy ever made."
