Why are Islamic supremacists and their leftwing media hacks blaming freedom-loving Americans for this tragedy? Because that is what they do -- destroy brave souls fighting against their war on freedom. They lie in wait like serpents looking for any story to exploit for their libel and defamation campaign, and the media does the Goebbels jig. But rational Americans aren't buying it.
More proof of the subway shover's lunacy and the failed mental health system that puts citizens at risk.
Former firefighter: I was attacked by subway-shove suspect in 2003 NY Post December 31, 2012 (thanks to golem)
He’s just glad he didn’t run into her on a subway platform.
A retired FDNY battalion chief yesterday recalled a violent 2003 encounter with accused subway pusher Erika Menendez — in which she showed what a menace to society she was by ranting like a madwoman and randomly attacking him outside his Queens home.
“She said, ‘You f--ked my mother!’ ” Daniel Conlisk told The Post yesterday. “She just punched me in the face.”
Conlisk, 65, said his heart skipped a beat when he heard news this week that Menendez had struck again — allegedly pushing helpless commuter Sunando Sen to his death Thursday in front of a Queens 7 train because she thought he was Muslim.Michael HicksCHILLING ECHO: Erika Menendez, accused of pushing Sunando Sen to his death under a 7 train, punched ex-firefighter Daniel Conlisk in an unprovoked attack in 2003.Daniel ConliskSunando Sen
“It gives me chills that she did this to the other guy,” Conlisk said. “I guess I was lucky.”
The former firefighter said he was disposing of trash at about 10 p.m. on June 20, 2003, near his Ridgewood, Queens, home, when Menendez, whose boyfriend lived up the block, inexplicably confronted him.
He had no idea who she was, but she seemed to be out of her mind and ranting manically about him sleeping with her mom.
The then-21-year-old suddenly slugged Conlisk.
“It stunned me. It knocked me back,” he recalled. “She was quick. It was no little-girl hit. It was a punch, like a guy punch. It was tough.”
Menendez continued to scratch at Conlisk’s face before he managed to return some blows and escape the unprovoked assault.
“Eventually, I had to punch her just to get her off me, to knock her back so I could get back in the door,” he said.
When cops arrived, Menendez continued to scream at Conlisk and accused him of stealing her jewelry while they were in high school — despite the obvious age difference.
“That’s when they realized she was whacked out,” he recalled. “When she said that, I guess everyone realized it was bull crap.”
Conlisk said that Menendez was given six months’ probation for the attack and that he took out an order of protection against her.
“She’s a lot bigger now,” he said after seeing his attacker on television.
Conlisk was unaware that just two months prior to his beating, Menendez had been arrested for assaulting an ex-boyfriend in their shared apartment just up the street.
According to sources, Menendez knocked then-boyfriend John Goelz, now 36, in the face during an argument in April of that year.
In addition to those busts, Menendez was picked up for cocaine possession in Manhattan in 2008 and had three additional sealed arrests since then, law-enforcement sources said.
Menendez was arrested Saturday morning and charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime in the attack on Sen, a Hindu immigrant.
Officials said Menendez believed Sen was a Muslim and attacked as “revenge” for 9/11.
Meanwhile, a source told The Post that Menendez had been treated as recently as two months ago at Bellevue Hospital and had been discharged.
“There are going to be questions about that — what the circumstances were and what her condition was when they let her go,” the source said.
The attack was the second deadly shoving assault in the subway in just the past month.
UPDATE: Robert Spencer dissects another hate piece in Salon:
Imagine a political analyst in 1940 who studied the low opinion that Americans had of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, and concluded that the problem was not the genocidal anti-Semitism, the international aggression, or the vile racist ideology, but bad press. Imagine further another analyst who pointed out that the bad press that Hitler and the Nazis got was a just result of their own words and actions, and that if they wanted to improve their public image in America, they should clean their own house and stop giving decent people so much cause to oppose them.
Finally, imagine that the second analyst, the one who ascribed the public’s low image of Nazis to the actions of Nazis themselves, was derided as a “hatemonger” and “bigot” who simply had an irrational hatred of Nazis and Germans in general. Would that be absurd? Of course. Outrageous? Undoubtedly. Morally inverted? Absolutely. Yet this little thought experiment encapsulates the prevailing sentiment regarding Muslims and “Islamophobia” today.
We saw this again Saturday, when it came to light that a deranged woman in New York City, Erica Menendez, pushed a Hindu man into the path of an oncoming subway train and murdered him because she thought he was a Muslim. “I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks,” she said, “because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I’ve been beating them up.” Leftist pseudo-journalist propagandists such as Glenn Greenwald and Adam Serwer, along with Islamic supremacists such as Hussam Ayloush of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), began scratching their heads and wondering where the killer, in Greenwald’s words, “learned this level of hatred for Muslims.”
They had their answer ready, of course. The thuggish Nathan Lean, editor-in-chief of Aslan Media, answered Greenwald immediately by listing Pamela Geller and me, along with David Yerushalmi and several other counter-jihadists, as the cause of Menendez’s “hatred for Muslims.” Never mind that Menendez hadn’t mentioned any of us. Never mind that she was obviously unbalanced and irrational. The new Left fascists thought they had found another weapon they could use to try to discredit and shut down resistance to the global jihad and Islamic supremacism, and they rode it for all it was worth.
But the whole episode only highlighted the larger question. The words of a clearly insane murderess can be discounted, but insofar as sane and non-murderous Americans have a dim view of Islam and Muslims, what is the cause of that? Is it the “Islamophobic” writings of people like Pamela Geller and me? Or could it be that anti-Muslim bigotry, that is, any that may really exist, is a reaction to people like Amine Mohamed El-Khalifi, the would-be jihad/martyrdom suicide bomber at the U.S. Capitol; Naser Abdo, the would-be second Fort Hood jihad mass murderer; Khalid Aldawsari, the would-be jihad mass murderer in Lubbock, Texas; Muhammad Hussain, the would-be jihad bomber in Baltimore; Mohamed Mohamud, the would-be jihad bomber in Portland; Faisal Shahzad, the would-be Times Square jihad mass-murderer; Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, the Arkansas military recruiting station jihad murderer; Naveed Haq, the jihad mass murderer at the Jewish Community Center in Seattle; Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar, the would-be jihad mass murderer in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Ahmed Ferhani and Mohamed Mamdouh, who hatched a jihad plot to blow up a Manhattan synagogue; Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the would-be Christmas airplane jihad bomber; or the many others like them who have plotted and/or committed mass murder in the name of Islam and are motivated by its texts and teachings, all in the U.S. in the last few years?
Any bigotry and victimization of innocent people is to be unequivocally condemned and opposed. The question here, however, is whether “hatred of Muslims” is really caused by bad press, and by the “hatemongers” responsible for that bad press, or whether that hatred is a reaction to the violent actions that all too many Muslims have undertaken recently in the name of Islam. The further question is what can be done to end it. Is the remedy to stop all honest reporting about jihad violence and Islamic supremacism, and the Muslim texts that jihadis use to justify both? Or is it for genuinely peaceful Muslims to take decisive action against that jihad and Islamic supremacism?
If Muslim spokesmen in the U.S. like Hamas-linked CAIR’s Ayloush and others really want to end “anti-Muslim bigotry,” rather than use it as a tool to destroy the freedom of speech and bring Sharia blasphemy laws to the West, they need to stand against Muslims like the ones I have just listed, rather than against those non-Muslims who are trying to resist them, when “anti-Muslim bigotry” breaks out. That they do not do so shows up the hypocrisy of their entire enterprise. For this is not a difficult point to grasp. That it so persistently eludes Leftist and Islamic supremacist spokesmen who otherwise seem to display a reasonable level of intelligence indicates that a very different agenda is playing out – one that bodes ill for all free people.

"Syria rebels 'beheaded a Christian and fed him to the dogs' as fears grow over Islamist atrocities" Daily Mail, December 30 (thanks to Robert):Syrian rebels beheaded a Christian man and fed his body to dogs, according to a nun who says the West is ignoring atrocities committed by Islamic extremists.
The nun said taxi driver Andrei Arbashe, 38, was kidnapped after his brother was heard complaining that fighters against the ruling regime behaved like bandits.
She said his headless corpse was found by the side of the road, surrounded by hungry dogs. He had recently married and was soon to be a father.
Sister Agnes-Mariam de la Croix said: ‘His only crime was his brother criticised the rebels, accused them of acting like bandits, which is what they are.’
There have been a growing number of accounts of atrocities carried out by rogue elements of the Syrian Free Army, which opposes dictator Bashar al-Assad and is recognised by Britain and the West as the legitimate leadership.
Sister Agnes-Miriam, mother superior of the Monastery of St James the Mutilated, has condemned Britain and the west for supporting the rebels despite growing evidence of human rights abuses. Murder, kidnapping, rape and robbery are becoming commonplace, she says.
‘The free and democratic world is supporting extremists,’ Sister Agnes-Miriam said from her sanctuary in Lebanon. ‘They want to impose Sharia Law and create an Islamic state in Syria.’...

Exclusive: Pamela Geller blasts religious 'leaders' for failing to condemn barbaric cruelty
Where are the plaintive cries from American Muslims decrying such bloodlust in the cause of jihad? Where are the denunciations and condemnations of this jihad, ethnic cleansing and Islamic supremacism from the "moderate" Muslims? Why, they are in a froth denouncing my ads (like the one running on the backs of NYC buses, above).
#MyJihad in Nigeria: Muslims murder 22 in jihad attacks, force Christians to convert to Islam on pain of death Jihadwatch
The moral inversion of those who do not criticize and condemn this, but rather focus their ire upon those who call attention to it and its motivating ideology, is nothing short of monstrous. "22 killed in three attacks in Nigeria," by Nana Karikari-apau for CNN, December 30 (thanks to David):(CNN) -- At least 22 people have been killed in three separate attacks in northeastern Nigeria since Friday, including 15 Christians shot Sunday inside a church, according to officials.
The violence began early Friday when unidentified gunmen raided a village in Musari, in Borno state, killing five people, said Joint Task Force Lt. Col. Sagir Musa. JTF troops responded, and a gun battle ensued. Three of the attackers were killed, and troops recovered weapons and ammunition. Musa declined to provide further details of the attack.
Also Friday, gunmen with suspected ties to the Islamist militant group Boko Haram killed two people and wounded another in an attack in Maiha, in Adamawa state, according to Godfrey Okeke, Adamawa state commissioner. The attackers freed 35 inmates from the Maiha prison and set government buildings on fire, Okeke said.
In Sunday's attack, gunmen entered a church in Chibok, also in Borno state, and killed at least 15 worshipers, said Mohammed Kana, a regional official for the National Emergency Management Agency.
"Some of the people had their throats slit," Kana said, citing NEMA staff who responded to the scene.
Sunday's violence comes six days after attackers raided two churches during Christmas Eve services, killing 12 people.
In October, a report from Human Rights Watch addressed the violence plaguing northern Nigeria, particularly from Boko Haram. The group's name means "Western education is forbidden." It seeks to impose a strict version of Sharia law in the Muslim-dominated northern part of the country.
Everywhere Islamic law is applied around the world today, it looks the same as it does in Nigeria: "strict." There is no "relaxed version.""Suspected members of the group have bombed or opened fire on worshipers in at least 18 churches across eight northern and central states since 2010. In Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, the group also forced Christian men to convert to Islam on penalty of death," it said....
Again, we ask, where are the plaintive cries from American Muslims decrying such bloodlust in the cause of jihad? Where are the denunciations and condemnations of this jihad, ethnic cleansing and Islamic supremacism from the "moderate" Muslims? Why, they are in a froth denouncing my ads enforcing the blasphemy laws under the sharia -- in effect, helping advance the global jihad.
#MyJihad in Libya: Muslims bomb church, murder two Jihadwatch December 20, 2012
And yet there are people in the world who focus their moral indignation not on the perpetrators of acts such as these, but on those who dare to call attention to them and to the ideology that inspires them. This is a monstrous moral evil. It must not prevail.
"Libya church blast kills two Egyptians: embassy," from AFP, December 30 (thanks to Lookmann):AFP - An explosion rocked a Christian Coptic church near the western Libyan city of Misrata on Sunday, killing two people and wounding two others, all of them Egyptians, an Egyptian diplomat told AFP.
"Two Egyptians were killed and two were wounded," said the diplomat at the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli who declined to be named.
"The church explosion was in the town of Dafniya in Misrata (province). The consul went directly to Misrata to find out the details. We still don't have clear information," the diplomat said.
Earlier, a security official said one Egyptian was killed and three others were wounded in the blast at a Coptic church. The Egyptian diplomat said that one of those hurt in the explosion died later at the hospital.
Residents said the explosion took place in the early afternoon at a Coptic church in Dafniya, a Mediterranean town 30 kilometres (18.5 miles) west of Misrata, where brigades made up of former rebels hold a major checkpoint.
"...bounties would be valid for six months and were issued to "inspire and encourage our Muslim nation for jihad."
Obama backed al qaeda in Libya (and covered for them in the murder of Ambassador Stevens in Benghazi) and he is backing them in Syria now.
How many requests will Ambassador Gerald M. Feierstein have to make for security, and how many times will it be denied because there is no allocation for such things in Obama's 16 trillion dollar spending bacchanalia?
And the media is like the man with the shovel following behind Obama the circus elephant. Cleaning up and polishing his knob. It's what they do.
"Al Qaeda offers gold bounty for US ambassador in Yemen" ITV News (thanks to Jack)
Al Qaeda-linked militants in Yemen have pledged to give three kilograms of gold - worth around £100,000 - to anyone who can kill the US ambassador in Sanaa.
An audio message posted on militant websites also offered around £15,000 for the head of any American soldier found fighting in the country.
A statement from the al Malahem Foundation, reported by the Associated Press, said the bounties would be valid for six months and were issued to "inspire and encourage our Muslim nation for jihad."
After they squeezed every drop out of Israel that they could get ....
Now he tells us. There go twenty years of wasting our time down the drain.
Well, there it is. Israel gave up everything -- and for what? It was never about peace. It has always been a jihad on the Jews. Going to back to ...... Muhammad.
Ever since the "Palestinians" chose the unilateral path to statehood in the UN (in violation of the "peace" accords), there have been no bilateral negotiations whatsoever (a condition of Oslo).
The PLO signed the Declaration of Principles with Israel on the White House lawn.
There, the terror group committed itself to a peace process in which all disputes between Israel and the PLO – including the issue of Palestinian statehood – would be settled in the framework of bilateral negotiations.
The PA was established on the basis of this accord. The territory, money, arms and international legitimacy it has been given was due entirely to the PLO pledge to resolve the Palestinian conflict with Israel through bilateral negotiations.
Israel gifted Gaza and West Bank cities – Bethlehem, Hebron, Jenin, Nablus, Qalqilya, Ramallah, Tulkarm, and some 450 villages to jihad, billions in aid, and in exchange lost the upper hand, the respect and much-needed fear in the bloody Muslim world, and gave a free hand and sanction to the enemy in her midst.
Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby speaks at a press conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Friday, December 29 (photo credit: Issam Rimawi/Flash90)
Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby said two decades of talks with Israel have been “a waste of time” and that Palestinians will soon take a new statehood bid to the UN.
“We will return to the UN Security Council,” he said in Ramallah Saturday after meeting Palestinian officials. “Palestine will be cooperating with Arab and EU countries to change the equation (in the peace process) that prevailed over the past 20 years, which was a waste of time.”
The UN General Assembly last month granted Palestine nonmember observer state status. Last year, the Palestinians tried and failed to get full UN member-state status. The Security Council must approve new members, and the United States made clear it would veto any Palestinian attempt. But the veto was not required because the Palestinian Authority could not in any case muster enough votes at the Security Council.
Talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority collapsed in 2008 after Palestinians demanded Israel stop building in areas they want for a future state. Israel insists settlements and other issues should be negotiated.
Elaraby and Egypt’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr, who joined Elaraby on the visit, met with the Palestinian Authority’s Presidential Secretary Tayeb Abdul Rahim and Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki. The foreign leaders visited the grave of former PA president and PLO chief Yasser Arafat, and laid a wreath at his tombstone before entering into a meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinians news agency WAFA reported.
In their meetings with Abbas, Elaraby and Amr reportedly discussed the Palestinians’ million-dollar debt crisis, which has worsened following Israel’s decision not to hand over PA tax revenues and other related payments in the wake of the successful Palestinian UN bid in November. An idea being floated by the Arab League is the creation of a financial safety net of some $100 million to help the PA with its cash flow issues.
Elaraby’s visit was touted as a solidarity tour after the Palestinians’ newly upgraded status.
Via his envoy, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi passed on to Abbas a formal invitation to visit Cairo.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, who was reportedly planning to attend, did not join for the visit. Other League member countries’ foreign ministers were reportedly thwarted from coming by the United States, according to Arabic-language media source Al-Quds Al-Arabi.
“Saturday’s trip was originally scheduled for a delegation of Arab foreign ministers, but the secretariat had only received approval by Israel for the League chief and the ministers from Jordan and Egypt,” claimed a Jordanian media statement issued on Thursday.
PLO chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, however, told Haaretz that rumors of foreign ministers being denied entry were false.
Elaraby’s visit to the Muqata’a (the presidential compound in Ramallah) was the first high-profile tour in recent months. An unnamed Palestinian official told Haaretz that Elaraby’s visit was important because of the current, sensitive crossroads in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — namely the PA’s new UN status, Israeli settlement expansion plans, and the Palestinians’ looming fiscal crisis.

Cleric to Egypt's Copts: America Can't Protect You from Genocide Gatestone Institute, Raymond Ibrahim, December 28, 2012 (thanks to The Religion of Peace)
"The day Egyptians…feel you are against them, you will be wiped off the face of the Earth." — Dr. Wagdi Goneim
Islamic leaders continue to portray the popular protests against President Morsi and his recently passed Sharia-heavy constitution as products of Egypt's Christians. Recently, Muslim Brotherhood leader Safwat Hegazy said in an open rally, as captured on video:
A message to the church of Egypt, from an Egyptian Muslim: I tell the church — by Allah, and again, by Allah — if you conspire and unite with the remnants [opposition] to bring Morsi down, that will be another matter…. our red line is the legitimacy of Dr. Muhammad Morsi. Whoever splashes water on it, we will splash blood on him."
More recently, Dr. Wagdi Ghoneim — who earlier praised Allah for the death of the late Coptic Pope Shenouda, cursing him to hell and damnation on video — made another video, entitled, "A Notice and Warning to the Crusaders in Egypt," a reference to the nation's Copts, which he began by saying, "You are playing with fire in Egypt, I swear, the first people to be burned by the fire are you [Copts]." The video was made in the context of the Tahrir protests against Morsi: Islamic leaders, such as Hegazy and Ghoneim, seek to portray the Copts as dominant elements in those protests; according to them, no real Muslim would participate. Ghoneim even went on to say that most of the people at the protests were Copts, "and we know you hid your [wrist] crosses by lowering your sleeves."
The heart of Ghoneim's message was genocidal: "The day Egyptians — and I don't even mean the Muslim Brotherhood or Salafis, regular Egyptians — feel that you are against them, you will be wiped off the face of the earth. I'm warning you now: do not play with fire!"
Along with trying to incite Egypt's Muslims against the Copts, and threatening them with annihilation, Ghoneim made other telling assertions, including:
Addressing the Christians of Egypt as "Crusaders," once again showing Islam's simplistic, black-and-white vision, which clumps all Christians — of all nations, past and present, regardless of historical context and denomination — as one, in accordance with an Islamic tradition that states "All infidels are one religion."
Comparing Christian Copts to animals: "Respect yourselves and live with us and we will protect you... Why?... because Allah has forbidden me to be cruel to animals. I'm not trying to compare you to animals … but if I am not cruel to animals or plants, shall I be cruel to a soul created by Allah? You are an infidel in Allah's sight — and it is for him to judge you. However, when you live in my country, it is forbidden for me to be unjust to you — but that doesn't mean we are equal. No, oh no."
Telling Copts: "I want to remind you that Egypt is a Muslim country.... if you don't like the Muslim Sharia, you have eight countries that have a Cross on their flag [in Europe], so go to them. However, if you want to stay here in Egypt with us, know your place and be respectful. You already have all your rights — by Allah, even more than Muslims... No one investigates your homes, no one investigates your churches. In fact, in the past, the Islamic groups used to fake their IDs and put Christian names on them when they would go out for [jihadi] operations, so that when the police would catch them, they would see they are Christians and be left alone." Ghoneim misses the irony of what he says: Police know that Egyptian Christians are not going to engage in terror; Egyptian Muslims are suspect.
Saying, in mocking tones, towards the end: "What do you think — that America will protect you? Let's be very clear, America will not protect you. If so, it would have protected the Christians of Iraq when they were being butchered!" — a reference to the fact that, after the U.S. ousted Saddam Hussein, half of Iraq's Christian population has either been butchered or fled the nation, and all under U.S. auspices.
Claiming that the Copts are only four million while the Muslims are 85 million — even as Coptic Orthodox Church registries maintain that there are more than 15 million Copts, and most outside analysts say 10 million— and adding that Morsi was only being nice by saying, as he did during one of his speeches: "There are no minorities in Egypt." Ghoneim fails to explain, if Copts are so few — four million compared to 85 million — how could they be so influential, and flood the Tahrir protests with such large numbers?
This is the best thing I have read on the election loss and the broader question of the loss of America.
I have, for some time, struggled with the new reality -- America void of her reason, existing without the reason for her existence, her morality. It did not seem possible. And yet what now seems impossible is that America ever was. As we revert back to the age of the primitive, the fact that America happened at all is nothing short of a miracle. The rational man's shining hour.
The United States of America was created as an independent nation whose founding ideal was the principle of individual rights. Freedom. Ayn Rand said, "freedom, in a political context, means freedom from government coercion." America was the first moral government based on individual rights, the nation of the Enlightenment.
That ideal has been tossed aside for ..... "free stuff."
Socialism may be established by force, as in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics—or by vote, as in Nazi (National Socialist) Germany. The degree of socialization may be total, as in Russia—or partial, as in England. Theoretically, the differences are superficial; practically, they are only a matter of time. The basic principle, in all cases, is the same.
The alleged goals of socialism were: the abolition of poverty, the achievement of general prosperity, progress, peace and human brotherhood. The results have been a terrifying failure—terrifying, that is, if one’s motive is men’s welfare.
Instead of prosperity, socialism has brought economic paralysis and/or collapse to every country that tried it. The degree of socialization has been the degree of disaster. The consequences have varied accordingly. (Ayn Rand, “The Monument Builders,”
The Virtue of Selfishness, 86)
“To be a socialist,” says Goebbels, “is to submit the I to the thou; socialism is sacrificing the individual to the whole.”
Who would have imagined that we would be seeing this very thing in America? Rand did, although even she thought it improbable. "In America ..... I don't think a dictatorship could take hold. Beneath all their errors the Americans' basic premise is freedom. That is the unspoken emotion - the sense-of-life- atmosphere. Traditionally and historically, the American people can be pushed so far. and then they stop it."
I am not so sure.
Op-Ed: Why Romney Didn't Get Enough Votes to WinRabbi Steven Pruzansky, Israel National News, November 13, 2012It is a different world, and a different America. Obama is part of that different America, knows it, and knows how to tap into it. That is why he won.
The most charitable way of explaining the election results of 2012 is that Americans voted for the status quo – for the incumbent President and for a divided Congress. They must enjoy gridlock, partisanship, incompetence, economic stagnation and avoidance of responsibility. And fewer people voted.
But as we awake from the nightmare, it is important to eschew the facile explanations for the Romney defeat that will prevail among the chattering classes. Romney did not lose because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy that devastated this area, nor did he lose because he ran a poor campaign, nor did he lose because the Republicans could have chosen better candidates, nor did he lose because Obama benefited from a slight uptick in the economy due to the business cycle.
Romney lost because he didn’t get enough votes to win.
That might seem obvious, but not for the obvious reasons. Romney lost because the conservative virtues – the traditional American virtues – of liberty, hard work, free enterprise, private initiative and aspirations to moral greatness – no longer inspire or animate a majority of the electorate. The notion of the “Reagan Democrat” is one cliché that should be permanently retired.
Ronald Reagan himself could not win an election in today’s America.
The simplest reason why Romney lost was because it is impossible to compete against free stuff. Every businessman knows this; that is why the “loss leader” or the giveaway is such a powerful marketing tool. Obama’s America is one in which free stuff is given away: the adults among the 47,000,000 on food stamps clearly recognized for whom they should vote, and so they did, by the tens of millions; those who – courtesy of Obama – receive two full years of unemployment benefits (which, of course, both disincentivizes looking for work and also motivates people to work off the books while collecting their windfall) surely know for whom to vote; so too those who anticipate “free” health care, who expect the government to pay their mortgages, who look for the government to give them jobs. The lure of free stuff is irresistible.
Imagine two restaurants side by side. One sells its customers fine cuisine at a reasonable price, and the other offers a free buffet, all-you-can-eat as long as supplies last. Few – including me – could resist the attraction of the free food. Now imagine that the second restaurant stays in business because the first restaurant is forced to provide it with the food for the free buffet, and we have the current economy, until, at least, the first restaurant decides to go out of business. (Then, the government takes over the provision of free food to its patrons.)
The defining moment of the whole campaign was the revelation (by the amoral Obama team) of the secretly-recorded video in which Romney acknowledged the difficulty of winning an election in which “47% of the people” start off against him because they pay no taxes and just receive money – “free stuff” – from the government. Almost half of the population has no skin in the game – they don’t care about high taxes, promoting business, or creating jobs, nor do they care that the money for their free stuff is being borrowed from their children and from the Chinese. They just want the free stuff that comes their way at someone else’s expense. In the end, that 47% leaves very little margin for error for any Republican, and does not bode well for the future.
It is impossible to imagine a conservative candidate winning against such overwhelming odds. People do vote their pocketbooks. In essence, the people vote for a Congress who will not raise their taxes, and for a President who will give them free stuff, never mind who has to pay for it.
That engenders the second reason why Romney lost: the inescapable conclusion that the electorate is dumb – ignorant, and uninformed. Indeed, it does not pay to be an informed voter, because most other voters – the clear majority – are unintelligent and easily swayed by emotion and raw populism. That is the indelicate way of saying that too many people vote with their hearts and not their heads. That is why Obama did not have to produce a second term agenda, or even defend his first-term record. He needed only to portray Mitt Romney as a rapacious capitalist who throws elderly women over a cliff, when he is not just snatching away their cancer medication, while starving the poor and cutting taxes for the rich.
Obama could get away with saying that “Romney wants the rich to play by a different set of rules” – without ever defining what those different rules were; with saying that the “rich should pay their fair share” – without ever defining what a “fair share” is; with saying that Romney wants the poor, elderly and sick to “fend for themselves” – without even acknowledging that all these government programs are going bankrupt, their current insolvency only papered over by deficit spending. Obama could get away with it because he knew he was talking to dunces waving signs and squealing at any sight of him.
During his 1956 presidential campaign, a woman called out to Adlai Stevenson: “Senator, you have the vote of every thinking person!” Stevenson called back: “That’s not enough, madam, we need a majority!” Truer words were never spoken.
Similarly, Obama (or his surrogates) could hint to blacks that a Romney victory would lead them back into chains and proclaim to women that their abortions and birth control would be taken away. He could appeal to Hispanics that Romney would have them all arrested and shipped to Mexico (even if they came from Cuba or Honduras), and unabashedly state that he will not enforce the current immigration laws. He could espouse the furtherance of the incestuous relationship between governments and unions – in which politicians ply the unions with public money, in exchange for which the unions provide the politicians with votes, in exchange for which the politicians provide more money and the unions provide more votes, etc., even though the money is gone. He could do and say all these things because he knew his voters were dolts.
One might reasonably object that not every Obama supporter could be unintelligent. But they must then rationally explain how the Obama agenda can be paid for, aside from racking up multi-trillion dollar deficits. “Taxing the rich” does not yield even 10% of what is required – so what is the answer, i.e., an intelligent answer?
Obama also knows that the electorate has changed – that whites will soon be a minority in America (they’re already a minority in California) and that the new immigrants to the US are primarily from the Third World and do not share the traditional American values that attracted immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a different world, and a different America. Obama is part of that different America, knows it, and knows how to tap into it. That is why he won.
Obama also proved again that negative advertising works, invective sells, and harsh personal attacks succeed. That Romney never engaged in such diatribes points to his essential goodness as a person; his “negative ads” were simple facts, never personal abuse – facts about high unemployment, lower take-home pay, a loss of American power and prestige abroad, a lack of leadership, etc. As a politician, though, Romney failed because he did not embrace the devil’s bargain of making unsustainable promises, and by talking as the adult and not the adolescent. Obama has spent the last six years campaigning; even his governance has been focused on payoffs to his favored interest groups. The permanent campaign also won again, to the detriment of American life.
It turned out that it was not possible for Romney and Ryan – people of substance, depth and ideas – to compete with the shallow populism and platitudes of their opponents. Obama mastered the politics of envy – of class warfare – never reaching out to Americans as such but to individual groups, and cobbling together a winning majority from these minority groups. Conservative ideas failed to take root and states that seemed winnable, and amenable to traditional American values, have simply disappeared from the map. If an Obama could not be defeated – with his record and his vision of America, in which free stuff seduces voters – it is hard to envision any change in the future. The road to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and to a European-socialist economy – those very economies that are collapsing today in Europe – is paved.
A second cliché that should be retired is that America is a center-right country. It clearly is not. It is a divided country with peculiar voting patterns, and an appetite for free stuff. Studies will invariably show that Republicans in Congress received more total votes than Democrats in Congress, but that means little. The House of Representatives is not truly representative of the country. That people would vote for a Republican Congressmen or Senator and then Obama for President would tend to reinforce point two above: the empty-headedness of the electorate. Americans revile Congress but love their individual Congressmen. Go figure.
The mass media’s complicity in Obama’s re-election cannot be denied. One example suffices. In 2004, CBS News forged a letter in order to imply that President Bush did not fulfill his Air National Guard service during the Vietnam War, all to impugn Bush and impair his re-election prospects. In 2012, President Obama insisted – famously – during the second debate that he had stated all along that the Arab attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi was “terror” (a lie that Romney fumbled and failed to exploit). Yet, CBS News sat on a tape of an interview with Obama in which Obama specifically avoided and rejected the claim of terrorism – on the day after the attack – clinging to the canard about the video. (This snippet of a “60 Minutes” interview was not revealed - until two days ago!) In effect, CBS News fabricated evidence in order to harm a Republican president, and suppressed evidence in order to help a Democratic president. Simply shameful, as was the media’s disregard of any scandal or story that could have jeopardized the Obama re-election.
One of the more irritating aspects of this campaign was its limited focus, odd in light of the billions of dollars spent. Only a few states were contested, a strategy that Romney adopted, and that clearly failed. The Democrat begins any race with a substantial advantage. The liberal states – like the bankrupt California and Illinois – and other states with large concentrations of minority voters as well as an extensive welfare apparatus, like New York, New Jersey and others – give any Democratic candidate an almost insurmountable edge in electoral votes. In New Jersey, for example, it literally does not pay for a conservative to vote. It is not worth the fuel expended driving to the polls. As some economists have pointed out generally, and it resonates here even more, the odds are greater that a voter will be killed in a traffic accident on his way to the polls than that his vote will make a difference in the election. It is an irrational act. That most states are uncompetitive means that people are not amenable to new ideas, or new thinking, or even having an open mind. If that does not change, and it is hard to see how it can change, then the die is cast. America is not what it was, and will never be again.
For Jews, mostly assimilated anyway and staunch Democrats, the results demonstrate again that liberalism is their Torah. Almost 70% voted for a president widely perceived by Israelis and most committed Jews as hostile to Israel. They voted to secure Obama’s future at America’s expense and at Israel’s expense – in effect, preferring Obama to Netanyahu by a wide margin. A dangerous time is ahead. Under present circumstances, it is inconceivable that the US will take any aggressive action against Iran and will more likely thwart any Israeli initiative. That Obama’s top aide Valerie Jarrett (i.e., Iranian-born Valerie Jarrett) spent last week in Teheran is not a good sign. The US will preach the importance of negotiations up until the production of the first Iranian nuclear weapon – and then state that the world must learn to live with this new reality. As Obama has committed himself to abolishing America’s nuclear arsenal, it is more likely that that unfortunate circumstance will occur than that he will succeed in obstructing Iran’s plans.
But this election should be a wake-up call to Jews. There is no permanent empire, nor is there is an enduring haven for Jews anywhere in the exile. The American empire began to decline in 2007, and the deterioration has been exacerbated in the last five years. This election only hastens that decline. Society is permeated with sloth, greed, envy and materialistic excess. It has lost its moorings and its moral foundations. The takers outnumber the givers, and that will only increase in years to come. Across the world, America under Bush was feared but not respected. Under Obama, America is neither feared nor respected. Radical Islam has had a banner four years under Obama, and its prospects for future growth look excellent. The “Occupy” riots across this country in the last two years were mere dress rehearsals for what lies ahead – years of unrest sparked by the increasing discontent of the unsuccessful who want to seize the fruits and the bounty of the successful, and do not appreciate the slow pace of redistribution.

A suspect has been apprehended in the copycat killing of a Hindu man on a subway platform on Friday. Islamic supremacists and their leftwing lapdogs are twisting themselves in knots in order to blame me and other freedom fighters for the horrific actions of the deranged madwoman who said this in her confessions:
“I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I’ve been beating them up.”
This is a copycat killing of the recent subway shove murder by a devout Muslim who went to mosque every day. That point was conveniently left out by leftist media and the Islamic supremacists now trying to blame our ads.
First off, my ads are not up yet in the subways. They are not scheduled to go up until January 7, 2013. And even if they were, how does that make me responsible? This murderess states most emphatically what her motive was: September 11. Why aren't the Islamic supremacists blaming jihad? Al Qaeda? Because they share AQ's ideology and goals and they are going to try to use this senseless murder to silence critics of genocide, ethnic cleansing and anti-humanism. Jihadists can kill thousands in the cause of Islam and the media, the left and political elites are OK with that, but some nut does something nuts and I am responsible? That's the war that we are in.
And she says she has been beating people up since 9/11/01. How is it that this lunatic has been able to roam the streets for 11 years? Another abject failure of our mental health system.
The incoherent suspect was mumbling as cops questioned her, and at one point asked where the R train was, the sources added. Her relatives called cops last night after seeing her on the news, law-enforcement sources said. Menendez could have a criminal background -- and possibly a history of mental health issues, the sources said. She has recently been living in homeless shelters. The suspect was taken to the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills.(NY Post)
Robert Spencer opines:".....their game is transparent. If this crazy woman was really motivated by "anti-Muslim bigotry," rather than a general xenophobia (e.g., also including Hindus), it didn't come from me. The causes of anti-Muslim bigotry are not those who trying to defend free societies against jihad terror and Islamic supremacism. The causes of anti-Muslim bigotry, such as any that really exists, are people like Amine Mohamed El-Khalifi, the would-be jihad/martyrdom suicide bomber at the U.S. Capitol; Naser Abdo, the would-be second Fort Hood jihad mass murderer; Khalid Aldawsari, the would-be jihad mass murderer in Lubbock, Texas; Muhammad Hussain, the would-be jihad bomber in Baltimore; Mohamed Mohamud, the would-be jihad bomber in Portland; Faisal Shahzad, the would-be Times Square jihad mass-murderer; Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, the Arkansas military recruiting station jihad murderer; Naveed Haq, the jihad mass murderer at the Jewish Community Center in Seattle; Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar, the would-be jihad mass murderer in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Ahmed Ferhani and Mohamed Mamdouh, who hatched a jihad plot to blow up a Manhattan synagogue; Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the would-be Christmas airplane jihad bomber; or the many others like them who have plotted and/or committed mass murder in the name of Islam and are motivated by its texts and teachings, all in the U.S. in the last few years.
If Muslim spokesmen in the U.S. like Ayloush and others really want to end "anti-Muslim bigotry," rather than use it as a tool to destroy the freedom of speech and bring Sharia blasphemy laws to the West, they need to stand against Muslims like the ones I have just listed, rather than against those non-Muslims who are trying to resist them, when "anti-Muslim bigotry" breaks out. That they do not do so shows up the hypocrisy of their entire enterprise."
"Woman Accused of Hate-Crime Murder in Subway Push" NY Times, December 29, 2012
A 31-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday and charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime in connection with the death of a man who was pushed onto the tracks of an elevated subway station in Queens and crushed by an oncoming train.
Police personnel patrolling the 40th Street-Lowery Street station on Friday, where a man was pushed in front of a 7 train.
The woman, Erika Menendez, selected her victim because she believed him to be a Muslim or a Hindu, according to Richard A. Brown, the Queens district attorney.
“The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway commuter’s nightmare,” Mr. Brown said in an interview. “Being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an oncoming train.”
In a statement released by the district attorney’s office, Mr. Brown quoted Ms. Menendez, “in sum and substance,” as having told the police: “I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I’ve been beating them up.” Ms. Menendez conflated the Muslim and Hindu faiths in her comments to the police and in her target for attack, officials said.
The victim, Sunando Sen, was born in India and, according to a roommate, was raised Hindu.
Mr. Sen “was allegedly shoved from behind and had no chance to defend himself,” Mr. Brown said. “Beyond that, the hateful remarks allegedly made by the defendant and which precipitated the defendant’s actions should never be tolerated by a civilized society.”
Mr. Brown said he had no information on the defendant’s criminal or mental history.
“It will be up to the court to determine if she is fit to stand trial,” he said.
The attack occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday at the 40th Street-Lowery Street station in Sunnyside.
Mr. Sen, 46, was looking out over the tracks when a woman approached him from behind and shoved him onto the tracks, according to the police. Mr. Sen never saw her, the police said.
The woman fled the station, running down two flights of stairs and down the street.
By the next morning, a brief and grainy black-and-white video of the woman who the police said was behind the attack was being broadcast on news programs.
Patrol officers picked up Ms. Menendez early Saturday after someone who had seen the video on television spotted her on a Brooklyn street and called 911, said Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman for the Police Department. She was taken to Queens and later placed in lineups, according to detectives. Earlier police reports gave Ms. Menendez’s first name as Erica.
Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said on Friday that, according to witnesses’ accounts, there had been no contact on the subway platform between the attacker and the victim immediately before the fatal shove.
The case was the second this month involving someone being pushed to death in a train station. In the first case, Ki-Suck Han, 58, of Elmhurst, Queens, died under the Q train at the 49th Street and Seventh Avenue station on Dec. 3. Naeem Davis, 30, has been charged with second-degree murder in that case. A lawyer for Mr. Davis said his client had been trying to push Mr. Han away after an altercation.

MEXICO – Chiapas is one of Mexico's most exotic federal districts. But the magical forests, appealing Indian communities, colorful towns and intriguing archeological sites – that serve as main tourist attractions – hide a political hell.
In the mid-1990s, a leftist resistance group which calls itself The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) made Chiapas its home. Its attempts to fight the Mexican Army repeatedly failed, but the Zapatistas are still very active in the district's rural areas. Chiapas is considered a dangerous place, where every home has an arms arsenal of its own; and like many other places in Mexico, Chiapas' streets have become the battlefield where the government and local drug lords wrestle for dominance. Chiapas, however, harbors an even more sinister secret: It is also a hub of radical Islamist activity.
Catholic Mexico is in the midst of a crisis of faith. According to a local businessman, who asked to remain anonymous, it is widely believed that within a decade, Chiapas will be the first federal state in Mexico to turn its back on the Church.
"The Muslim missionaries are very active there," he said. "It's hard to know exactly how many people have converted to Islam over the past few years."
The Saturday Night Cinema is Noel Coward's Design for Living, directed by the brilliant and deliciously sly Ernst Lubitsch. The play is more Lubitsch than Coward, and if you are an unabashed Lubitsch fan like me, you're in for a treat. I recently watched "To Be or Not To Be" again and it's as sharp and brilliantly funny as the first time. Actually better after repeated viewings.
Design for Living was based on the stage comedy by Noel Coward, though little of his dialogue actually made it to the screen. Playwright Fredric March and artist Gary Cooper both fall in love with Miriam Hopkins, an American living in Paris. Both men love the girl, and the girl can't make up her mind between the two men, so the threesome decide to move in together--strictly platonically, of course....
"Design for Living" (1933) NY Times Movie Review
Miriam Hopkins, Fredric March and Gary Cooper in a Film Version of 'Design for Living.'
The Ernst Lubitsch-Ben Hecht picture which was inspired by Noel Coward's stage comedy "Design for Living" may be only a skeleton of the parent work, but it has the same familiar rattle. In attacking the problem of translating the play to the screen Mr. Lubitsch was aware of the probability of censorial scowls and the chance that the English author's brilliant dialogue might be a little too lofty for some cinema audiences. Therefore he decided that something unusually drastic would have to be done in making the film. Thus all that which remains of Mr. Coward's manuscript are the title and the theme.
Aren't private citizens entitled to a right of privacy? This is the ugliness of a savage nation, the elimination of the private life.
I strongly recommend that EVERY CITIZEN in this beleaguered community BUY A GUN. And I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a run on guns in that neighborhood.
I applaud the blogger who published the names and addresses of newspaper staff after the publication of the gun-permit database. Get a taste. Did this paper print the name and addressses of sex offenders, pedeophiles, etc., in the area? No, just law-abiding ciitizens.
"New York newspaper to list more gun permit holders after uproar" Reuters (thanks to Chris)
(Reuters) – A suburban New York newspaper that sparked an uproar among gun enthusiasts by publishing names and addresses of residents holding pistol permits is now planning to publish even more identities of permit-toting locals.
Further names and addresses will be added as they become available to a map originally published on December 24 in the White Plains, New York-based Journal News, the newspaper said.
The original map listed thousands of pistol permit holders in suburban Westchester and Rockland counties just north of New York City.
Along with an article entitled “The gun owner next door: What you don’t know about the weapons in your neighborhood,” the map was compiled in response to the December 14 shooting deaths of 26 children and adults in Newtown, Connecticut, editors of the Gannett Corp.-owned newspaper said.
The next batch of names will be permit holders in suburban Putnam County, New York, where the county clerk told the newspaper it is still compiling information.
Some 44,000 people are licensed to own pistols in the three counties, the newspaper said. Owners of rifles and shotguns do not need permits, the newspaper said.
The publication prompted outrage, particularly on social media sites, among gun owners.
“Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in them to protect themselves?” Rob Seubert of Silver Spring, Maryland, posted on the newspaper’s web site. “What a bunch of liberal boobs you all are.”
Republican state Senator Greg Ball of Patterson, New York, said he planned to introduce legislation to keep permit information private except to prosecutors and police.
A similar bill that he introduced earlier as an Assemblyman failed in the state Assembly.
“The asinine editors at the Journal News have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law abiding firearm owners throughout the region,” Ball wrote on his Senate web site.
The newspaper’s editor and vice president of news, CynDee Royle, earlier in the week defended the decision to list the permit holders.
“We knew publication of the database would be controversial, but we felt sharing as much information as we could about gun ownership in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings,” she said.
Some critics retaliated by posting reporters’ and editors’ addresses and other personal information online.
I don't know what is more shocking -- the horror of the jihad or that ABC actually reported it.
Obama refuses to designate the Muslim group waging jihad in Nigeria and responsible for thousands of gruesome murders a "terrorist group." He leaves that label to tea partiers.
Gunmen suspected to belong to a radical Islamist sect attacked a village in northeast Nigeria, tying up men, women and children before slitting their throats, killing at least 15 in the troubled region's latest attack, witnesses said Saturday.
The assault happened early Friday morning in the village of Musari on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the city where the sect known as Boko Haram first launched its guerrilla campaign of shootings and car bombings against Nigeria's weak central government. The gunmen shouted religious slogans and later ordered those there to be gathered up into a group, said Mshelia Inusa, a primary school teacher in the village.
"We heard some people chanting, 'God is great, God is great' amid sounds of banging on doors of houses at about 1 a.m.," the teacher said. "A voice was heard ordering people to be slaughtered and also voices of children were heard screaming."
Inusa said he and others later saw corpses with their hands tied behind their backs and their throats cut.
Later Friday morning, an ambulance arrived at the State Specialists Hospital in Maiduguri, accompanied by a group of military vehicles, a security guard said. Agitated soldiers ordered people away, but the guard said he counted at least 15 bodies being brought into the facility's morgue.
The guard spoke on condition of anonymity out of fears of angering either the military or the sect.
Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, a military spokesman, later issued a statement saying only five people had been killed in the village during the attack. However, military and police officials routinely downplay casualty figures because they are under increasing pressure from their superiors to minimize the perceived effects of the ongoing attacks by Boko Haram.
Boko Haram, which speaks to journalists through conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment Saturday. However, the attack mirrored other assaults carried out by the group as it expands its operations outside of cities in the northeast into rural towns and villages, where the security presence remains light and contact with the outside world remains difficult as the sect has destroyed a number of mobile phone towers recently.
The sect, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's Muslim north, wants the nation to enact strict Shariah law and release its imprisoned members. Despite a heavy military and police presence, the sect's adherents have continued to launch frequent attacks.
More than 780 people have been killed in Boko Haram attacks so far this year, according to an Associated Press count, making 2012 the worst year of violence attributed to the group. Boko Haram also has loose connections with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and Somalia's al-Shabab, according to Western military officials and diplomats.
Suspected Boko Haram gunmen also attacked another village Friday in Adamawa state on its border with neighboring Cameroon. Witnesses said that attack focused on the town of Maiha, where gunmen also shouted praises to God while setting fire to government buildings, a school and a prison. At least 35 prisoners were released from the prison in the attack, though 11 had been recaptured, police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim said Saturday.
Ibrahim said a civilian and a police officer were killed during the fighting.
And violence continued around the central Nigerian city of Jos, where ethnic, religious and political rivalries have caused mass killings in recent years. Authorities said at least seven had been killed in recent days around Christian villages in the rural plateau. Police said they were investigating the attacks.
Obama's legacy. US billions to these killers -- made possible by the stooge in the White House.
Hamdeen Sabahi, Amr Moussa and Mohammed ElBaradei, founders of the National Salvation Front, are accused of incitement against the state and betraying the ideals of the Revolution because they led mass protests against the Islamist constitution. Controversial Morsi-appointed Public Prosecutor Talaat Ibrahim Abdallah orders the inquiry.
Cairo (AsiaNews) - Egypt's public prosecutor, Talaat Ibrahim Abdallah, has ordered an inquiry into the leaders of the National Salvation Front, Hamdeen Sabahi, Amr Moussa and Mohammed ElBaradei. Appointed by President Mohammed Morsi, Abdallah wants the three opposition leaders, the last two former presidential candidates against Morsi, investigated on charges of "incitement" to overthrow the government and high treason. All three have led mass demonstrations against Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood and Egypt's new Qur'an-based constitution.
The legal action against the three main pro-democracy leaders comes amid criticism against the constitutional referendum, deemed invalid because of a low turnout (one third of the electorate) and numerous cases of electoral fraud by Islamists.
Unconcerned by the prevailing atmosphere of tensions, President Morsi signed the constitution on 26 December. Shortly, he will also announce the official date for new parliamentary elections.
The decision by the pro-Islamist prosecutor is further exacerbating tensions between Egyptians in favour of a secular state and defenders of a Sharia-based government, bringing the country that much closer to a civil war.
In an article published today al-Ahram online, some diplomats close to the opposition said that they had come under pressures from their superiors who want to silence all criticism against Morsi.
According to one diplomat, Egypt is now turning into a dictatorship. "I was summoned into the office of the assistant (foreign) minister," he said. The latter "asked me to be 'careful' and not to confuse my role as a diplomat with that of an activist." Another official "was told that his overt opposition to the president would undermine his chances to go a good post". (S.C)
