Why would Obama's Defense Secretary Leon Panetta tell the uber left, anti-Israel NY Times that Israel is going to strike Iran in April, May or June -- before Iran enters a “zone of immunity” to commence building a nuclear bomb?

This is the act of a friend? An acquaintance? A neutral party? Or an enemy of freedom?

Why would anyone in his rational mind give a devout jihadist regime a heads up?

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes that Israel is likely to strike Iran in the coming months, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius said Thursday.

"Panetta believes there is strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June – before Iran enters what Israelis described as a “zone of immunity” to commence building a nuclear bomb," Ignatius wrote.

Asked by journalists whether he disputes the report, Panetta said, "No, I'm just not commenting."

He added, "What I think and what I view, I consider that to be an area that belongs to me and nobody else."

He noted that Israel has stated publicly that it is considering military action against Iran, adding that US has "indicated our concerns."

Panetta, along with US President Barack Obama warned Israeli officials against opting for a military offensive in Iran, saying it would jeopardize the international sanctions program and other non-military efforts to stop Iran from crossing the nuclear "red line."

Even so, Ignatius claimed that senior officials in the Obama administration have yet to decide how to respond if an Israeli military strike materializes.

The columnist states that "Israeli leaders are said to accept, and even welcome, the prospect of going it alone and demonstrating their resolve at a time when their security is undermined by the 'Arab Spring'."

Another strike in a few years

The Israeli scenario, according to Ignatius, is a five day limited offensive, followed by a UN-brokered ceasefire. The relatively light damage that is expected to be inflicted on Iranian nuclear facilities will require Israel to stage another offensive a few years down the line.

Ignatius notes that American officials see two possible options to dissuade Israel from attacking: Serious talks with Iran – including full access and supervision over its nuclear program – or increased US covert operations that will undermine the nuclear program to the extent that Israel is convinced an attack is no longer necessary.

However, such options might be in vein because Prime Minister Netanyahu has already made a decision to attack in the next six months, Ignatius claims.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday said that if sanctions are unsuccessful in compelling Iran to abandon its nuclear program, the international community will have to examine other options.

"There is a global understanding that if the sanctions don't achieve the coveted goal of stopping the Iranian military nuclear program, an operation would have to be considered," he said at the Herzliya Conference.

I may be in the minority on this one (and that's fine with me), but I believe Iran should be completely destroyed whether or not they currently have or are trying to acquire nuclear weapons. Civilization can neither progress nor maintain its humble achievements while Muslims dwell upon the earth that God made for his children.

Muslims are just as dangerous with or without nuclear weapons because they will use everything at their disposal to harm humanity. I grew up in suburban northern NJ during the 60's and 70's as a second-generation Dutch-American and had many Jewish and Italian friends. I've also served our country in the USAF, even as a civilian I supported the US Army in Dhahran during Desert Shield/Storm. I've kept in touch with some of those Jewish friends, a few living in Israel right now.
We've been corresponding a lot via e-mail and I've had to tell them that I have never, ever been so ashamed of being as american as I am right now. The level of their sense of betrayal is indescribable. Some even go so far as wishing me final farewells since they do not anticiapte making it to the end of the year.
Even as an american with what might be considered a normal amount of patriotism, I feel equally betrayed by our current administration. This is not the america I grew up in and certainly not the america I want my children to inherit.

I read the article by Ignatius and he said, "Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak may have signaled the prospect of an Israeli attack soon when he asked last month to postpone a planned U.S.-Israel military exercise that would culminate in a live-fire phase in May. Barak apologized that Israel couldn’t devote the resources to the annual exercise this spring."

From that Ignatius deduces an attack. I didn't see anything about Panetta except his refusal to comment. So where does the article from Ynet get its info?

Obama/Panetta are thinking ahead. They are afraid that Israel may be able to defend herself and they are hoping that Iran and Iran's clients, among whom are Syria, Hesballah and Hamas, will be able to destroy Israel if only they step up the (1) hardening of the nuclear weapons facilities in Iran, and (2) increase in the number and range of rockets and other weapons stored in the houses of Gaza and the Lebanese border areas.

So it is essential to spur the Iranian Axis to be prepared for the necessary and inevitable Israeli preemptive strike. Since there is little that Iran can do to speed up the hardening of the nuclear weapons facilities, and since Obama/Panetta know that the Israelis are likely to do great damage to Iran's facilities, including their conventional missile and air power, they must consider the other modes of response.

Yep, ZBig's idea of shooting down an ally is one of the scenarios I was envisioning. That Obama would order US planes to shoot down Israeli pilots is just astounding and disgusting.

However, while I can envision President HopeNChange and his cabal of anti-semite lefties and Muslims doing both the invasion and shootdown, I suspect that because this is an election year, Obama can't totally come out against Israel without losing the rest of whatever Jewish vote he hasn't pissed off. Not yet at least.

For Obama, the sequence of events in this election year is crucial.

Every intelligence group estimates that Iran will have a operational deliverable nuclear weapon within one year. That seems to be the last window of opportunity for Israel to attack and nip Iran's nuclear program for a while. For Obama this is hugely inconvenient because of the 2012 election in November. An Israeli attack now, in March, April, May, or June, does nothing to benefit Obama, especially if Iran has the capability to conduct terrorist and assassination operations on US soil as acts of retaliation for a Israeli airstrike. The Iranian acts of retaliation on US soil & targets post-Israeli attack force Obama to commit US forces to attacking Iran which will lead to 6 or more months of airstrikes, military ops, etc. Should that start in March/April/May that means that by the November election, Americans will be involved in another costly war that will appear to be dragging on, just like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. Even if that war gives Obama the appearance of a strong aggressive president instead of a appeasing lefty, it does little to improve his standing among a war-weary American public who might balk at the prospect of another prolonged war. Not much HopeNChange from the guy who promised unicorns, puppies, kittens, waters receding, and healing the planet.

However, if Israel is merely forced to postpone a strike within that one year window, thanks to Panetta & Obama 'outing' Israel, then the timing of a August/September/October Israeli airstrike, and subsequent US entry into the war may very well seem to benefit Obama.

Let's say Israel does attack Iran in September/October. The Iranians then strike against the US on US soil via terrorists & assassins in sleeper cells. That changes everything especially in the run-up to the presidential election. Obama is forced to declare war against Iran, the country rallies, at least immediately, and in Obama gets a election bump, enough to put him over the top against the GOP candidate, likely Romney. A war-time president is a tough thing to defeat for any challenger, even more so for a guy like Romney with no military experience-his claim for being the most electable guy is due to his time as CEO at a time of financial duress, not a military leader.

The other scenario, is that if Iran is successfully able to pull off domestic terrorist acts and assassinations, then Obama as president has a legitimate reason to call for a postponement of the presidential elections, even martial law. Especially if Obama is doing poorly in the pre-election polls. At least until 'domestic security has been established, especially for the voters.' And because it is wartime, Republicans have a hell of a harder time questioning him on the indefinite postponement of elections. Thus Obama gets his 2nd term without being re-elected.

Look, I realize this ventures on 'conspiracy theory' territory, but these are extraordinary times, and we have a Chicago-thug president who is willing to 'never let a crisis go to waste.' Whether he's likely to win, in a close race, or behind and desperate, whatever the situation, Obama & Co will do everything to benefit from that situation.

What is almost certain is that if Obama is elected he will in his second term, absolutely screw over Israel. Whether he invokes the 'Samantha Power Option' and puts US troops to protect the Pali's, or the ZBig option and shoots down Israeli planes on their way to attack Iran, or merely undermines Israel and enables the surrounding Muslim nations like Egypt with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas, etc. to attack Israel the result is the same desired for Obama & co. eg the destruction of Israel.

The only real question to be answered for Obama, is how can he benefit from any of the above scenarios.

Obama wouldn't dare act on ZB's advice and shoot down Israeli warplanes once they're en route to Iran. As most of the US public is pro-Israel such an action would be politically suicidal. But it looks like he and Panetta are trying to do the next best and politically safer thing: preempt an Israeli attack before it gets underway by compromising (shooting down) the mission.

I agree, the ZBig option is highly improbable, but not impossible and you're correct, it is far more likely that Obama & Co., would just compromise an Israeli mission and let the Iranians do his dirty work to destroy the Iranians. Which is what I fear a 2nd Obama term would entail-the abandonment and undermining of Israel-its defense, its economy, its political and diplomatic standing to the point where it is so weakened that the Muslim states surrounding it feel confident enough to attack it. Obama doesn't need to put US troops in harms way or attack Israeli airfighters, all he need do is 'wash the US's hands' of Israel and set them up for attack.
