Report: Sarkozy calls Netanyahu 'liar' YNET news (hat tip Katherine)

Microphones accidently left on after G20 meeting pick up private conversation between US, French presidents. Sarkozy admits he 'can't stand' Israeli premier. Obama: You're fed up with him? I have to deal with him every day!

French President Nicolas Sarkozy reportedly told US President Barack Obama that he could not "stand" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and that he thinks the Israeli premier "is a liar." According to a Monday report in the French website "Arret sur Images," after facing reporters for a G20 press conference on Thursday, the two presidents retired to a private room, to further discuss the matters of the day.

The conversation apparently began with President Obama criticizing Sarkozy for not having warned him that France would be voting in favor of the Palestinian membership bid in UNESCO despite Washington's strong objection to the move.

The conversation then drifted to Netanyahu, at which time Sarkozy declared: "I cannot stand him. He is a liar." According to the report, Obama replied: "You're fed up with him, but I have to deal with him every day!"

 

The remark was naturally meant to be said in confidence, but the two leaders' microphones were accidently left on, making the would-be private comment embarrassingly public.

I should have looked before I leapt. I apologize for yesterday's post, but it wasn't entirely wrong. I was mistaken in connecting the Soviet nuclear scientist mentioned in the Washington Post article about the IAEA paper on Iran's nuclear weapons program with Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin. As it turns out the scientist, Vyacheslav Danilenko, a Ukranian, was a former Soviet scientist who aided Iran in the 1990s before Putin was in power. I jumped the gun in assuming that Danilenko might be one of the scientists identified by Israeli intelligence as currently working with Iran on its illicit nuclear program. According to a story in Haaretz Benjamin Netanyahu on a trip to Moscow in March 2009 presented the Russians with a private list of Russian scientists working on developing an Iranian nuclear warhead. Israelis were convinced that these weren't free lance scientists like Danilenko, but that they were approved by the Kremlin. Let us just say that Danilenko is emblematic of Russia's complicity in Iran's program; and that the audience that Ali Khamenie, Iran's supremo, granted Putin in 2007 (the first time an Iranian supreme leader met with a non-Moslem head of state) was a sign of Russia's partnership with Iran on its civilian and military nuclear programs. In fact, Putin places so much value on Russia's strategic relationship with Iran that he made the flattering remark about Khamenie that when the two met he felt he was in the presence of Christ. There is something particularly ironic about the liar claim; not just that Sarkozy and Obama are two of the biggest liars in political history - but that Arab lies are at the root of the whole Middle East narrative, but nobody has called them to account for it. It is certainly true that Netanyahu has lied - most notably every time recently when he has stated that Obama is a friend of Israel he has lied through his teeth to cover up for Obama and he has also lied when he states publicly that France and the other EU countries can be a force for good in the Middle East.
