According to CRIF, the representative body of French Jewry, Synagogue Beth-El was ransacked towards the end of last month while Tunisian Muslims were marking the month of Ramadan.
It is believed the synagogue has not been guarded since the Arab Spring revolutionaries overthrew the government of President Zein el-Abbadin Bin Ali.
Witnesses told CRIF that windows were broken, marble plaques marking supporters of the synagogue were smashed and the contents of cabinets including collection boxes and silver Judaica items were stolen.
In addition, several household appliances including the air conditioner unit are missing from the apartment adjoining the synagogue.
Sfax, once Tunisia's economic capital, is home to around 30 Jewish people, many of them elderly.
The rest of Tunisia's estimated 2,000-strong Jewish community live in the cities of Djerba or Tunis.
In February, Muslim protesters gathered outside the main synagogue in Tunis shouting anti-Jewish slogans and reportedly calling for death to Jews.

Hordes of Western, modern-looking Muslims attack the Great Synagogue of Tunis to the chants of "Allahua Akbar!" and the genocial Islamic death chant:
"Khaybar Khaybar ya yahud, Jaish Muhammad saya'ud," which means "Jews, remember Khyabar, the army of Mohammed is returning." This cry relates to an event in the seventh century when Muslims massacred and expelled Jews from the town of Khaybar, in modern-day Arabia.

The army responded amidst fears of increasing disorder following the revolt that toppled former President Zine al-Abdine Ben Ali. Changes in the government have resulted in otherwise peaceful days since Ben Ali's departure on January 14, following days of protests that ended 23 years of strict police rule. There were reportedly 147 persons killed during Tunisia's days of rage.
