"It’s Not a Store.
It’s a COMMUNITY CENTER!"
NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn and mighty mosqueteer on the Ground Zero mosquestrosity supports the project.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says the proposed $100 million mosque and community center near Ground Zero won't be hampered by the city's landmark law, the DN City Hall Bureau's Frank Lombardi reports. Since the City Council has the last say in the landmarking process, Quinn's comments carry added weight.
NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn of Wal-Mart (Dec 14 was designated "Hate Wal'Mart Day):
we don’t want companies that have led the nation in law suits being brought against them by workers. We don’t want companies that have the largest class-action in history brought against them. We don’t want companies where women are, over and over, paid less than men and not promoted. You can be very clear that I don’t want that.”
Liar. They have better opportunities than the mafia unions do. She and her council puppets are upset over how Walmart treats women? But you're ok with Muslim Sharia Law.
While the NYC Council continues its ongoing war against New Yorkers in its support of the Ground Zero mosquestrosity (the majority of New Yorkers oppose the mosque), in the same befouled breath the Council has forbidden good jobs, cheap prices ....Wal-Mart and all its economic benefits (87% New Yorkers want a Wal-Mart in the city).
Who is looking after the people? The NYC Council should disbanded, rendered obsolete. The NYC Council is harmful to children and other living things.
The hypocrisy is mindblowing. The Islamic supremacists behind the mosque are applying for our taxpayer monies from a 911 fund to rebuild Ground Zero. Our dough. Juxtapose that with this. Walmart has been helping the Food Bank of NY City and food banks across the country. A financially broke city and state like NY can't manage to do this. And Wal-Mart does not even have a store in the city, becuase they been banned since 2o06.
“Food Bank For New York City is grateful to the Walmart Foundation for its generous grant to help us make energy-efficient improvements to our warehouse,” said Lucy Cabrera, Ph.D, CAE, president and CEO of Food Bank For New York City. “In addition to helping reduce operating costs, these improvements will make the Food Bank a more environmentally friendly organization —something that is very important to us.”

Grants will help regional food banks reduce energy use and save money
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Jan. 18, 2010 — As hunger relief organizations continue to look for new ways to serve an increasing number of U.S. families who need help putting food on their dinner tables, the Walmart Foundation today announced a $2 million donation to help food banks save money on their energy bills. With this funding, 16 food banks will become more energy efficient through simple and relatively low-cost upgrades to lighting, refrigeration or heating and air conditioning equipment that performs better, uses less energy and costs less to operate.
“These grants underscore Walmart’s commitment to lead on both hunger relief and sustainability,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. “Every dollar these food banks save on energy costs is another dollar they can use to help meet the hunger needs of their local communities.”
Annually, the grants are expected to help food banks:
Save more than $625,000 in energy costs
enough to buy 390,000 pounds of food+, or
enough to buy more than 300,000 meals#
Reduce energy use by more than 5.2 million kilowatt hours
enough to power more than 400 homes for a year*, or
enough to remove more than 700 vehicles from the road for a year*, or
the equivalent of avoiding more than 3,700 metric tons of carbon emissions*
“Food Bank For New York City is grateful to the Walmart Foundation for its generous grant to help us make energy-efficient improvements to our warehouse,” said Lucy Cabrera, Ph.D, CAE, president and CEO of Food Bank For New York City. “In addition to helping reduce operating costs, these improvements will make the Food Bank a more environmentally friendly organization —something that is very important to us.”
This initiative is a part of Walmart’s commitment to fighting hunger. In May, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation announced a $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment through the end of 2015, including:
Donating more than 1.1 billion pounds of food from Walmart stores, distribution centers and Sam’s Club locations, valued at $1.75 billion;
Giving $250 million in grants to support hunger relief organizations at the national, state and local levels;
Collaborating with government, food manufacturers and other corporations that are fighting hunger to increase impact and reach a greater number of families in need.
* According to the EPA calculator – http://www.epa.gov/cleanenergy/energy-resources/calculator.html
# According to the USDA, 1.28 pounds of food is equivalent to one meal.
+ According to Feeding America, the approximate average wholesale value of one pound of donated product at the national level is $1.60 – http://feedingamerica.org/about-us/~/media/Files/financial/2010-auditors-report.ashx?.pdf

The government should keep its big nose and its big ass out of both of these issues. If they stop Wal-Mart, stop the Cordoba mosque. Here's a Wal-Mart cheat sheet.
he City Council's much-anticipated hearing Wednesday on the impact of Walmart's expected entry into New York looms more as a pep rally for opponents than a sincere fact-finding inquiry.Scheduled to testify are a professor who has concluded that Walmart puts small retailers out of business; the local union leader who has led the fight against Walmart, as well as the government affairs specialist at the grocery chain that employs his members; plus a series of community activists closely allied with labor.
Given the affair's presumed one-sided nature, Walmart is unlikely to send anyone, nor are its supporters willing to participate. So if members are interested in a fair hearing, here is a sample of questions they need to ask opponents. If they don't, the council, not Walmart, will get a black eye.
How does Walmart differ from its competitors, including Target, Kohl's, Toys “R” Us and BJ's—to name only some of the superstores that have marched into the city without opposition?
The council should find out if these chains are unionized, if they pay higher wages than Walmart and if their employee benefits are better.
Much has been made of the argument that Walmart forces out neighborhood stores. How will Walmart manage to do that when its competitors haven't? And do employees at mom-and-pop operations fare better than they would working at Walmart?
The self-styled defenders of small business should be asked if they know what kind of wages small shops pay—and especially whether they offer health benefits.
How will consumers benefit by keeping Walmart out of New York?
A related exercise for representatives of the Red Apple supermarket group would be to explain how its prices and selection compare with Walmart's.
Why do opponents think so many New Yorkers go out of their way to shop and work at Walmart?
Its suburban stores do about $165 million annually in credit card sales from city residents. The Valley Stream store, a stone's throw from the Queens border, is the No. 1 location in the country for shipments ordered on Walmart.com and picked up locally; and 1,400 city residents are Walmart employees.
Finally, and most fundamentally, on what legal basis would the City Council bar just Walmart from the city?
The federal courts might have a lot to say on this issue.
Opponents think they're putting Walmart on trial Wednesday. Actually, the council will be in the dock.
