The Board of Supervisors met last night to vote on the lease renewal by the Saudi government of county-owned buildings for the notorious Islamic Saudi Academy in Fairfax, Virginia. The Islamic Saudi Academy is a school in Northern Virginia and is operated by the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia. Regular Atlas readers are well aware of this dangerous institution -- see here. Their valedictorian is serving life in prison for plotting to assassinate then-President Bush. Back in 2008, State Department officials would not close the Saudi-financed Islamic school in Northern Virginia that failed to eliminate violent and intolerant language in textbooks. A prior investigation by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom focused on 17 textbooks used during the school year and found that textbooks at the 900-student private school had passages that blame the Jews for "discord" and say it is sometimes permissible to kill non-Muslims.
Last night the Board met and voted to extend the lease -- Saudi money corrupts absolutely.

Right up front, the bad news is that we lost another one by one stinkin’ vote. It was 6 to 4 to approve the ISA lease for four years to the Saudis with Cook, Frey, Herrity and McKay voting with us.
We had about a hundred people there and about 10 people testified. All of the testimony was good . I do want to note the testimony of Nina Shea of the Hudson Institute and the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom against granting the lease. She gave detailed testimony on what ISA teaches and how secretive the ISA is about current textbooks and curricula.
The ISA produced a “tea party” activist who called all of us racists, a Red Cross worker who spent a full day at ISA and a math teacher – “nobody saw nuthin” in the words of Jimmy Cagney . The Red Cross guy said he never saw a niqab or burkha even though ISA’s own webpage has lots of them.
Supervisor Gerry Hyland demonstrated just how selective a memory he has. He was ready to do an investigation and form several “task forces” on a variety of issues but he never mentioned the investigation which he did in 2008 – the one that not one can find. At the time, he said he was shocked and “troubled” by some of the curricula. We asked for a copy and he said he couldn’t find it.
Lots of discussion of Gerry Connolly and the cash bonanza he reaped from railroading the last ISA lease renewal through over community opposition. The Supervisors organized the hearings so that they always have the last word. In 2008, Supervisors Hudgins, Gross and others took a lot of cheap shots at Christians, particularly Catholics but there was none of that last night.
With the exception of Hyland – no one was talking.
Several of the Supervisors said they were given pre-vote briefing kits prepared by the staff which omitted some items which were given to others. I’ll chat with lawyers about that today.

7.07pm: Jim Lafferty: Thank you for responding to my letter. Chairman of the Virginia Anti-Shariah Taskforce, have spoken on many occasions on the lease of the ISA. The way they structured these hearings, the BOS gets to speak after public comment. First, Chairman Connolly introduced a man that was supposed to be an example of the high quality of the ISA. This individual was arrested in June 2008 for failing to report an incident of child sexual abuse at the ISA. The interesting point to make is that this person followed Shariah law — not Virginia law. That’s why we don’t like ISA — it teaches by Shariah, and promotes Shariah. Defines right according to religion and gender. Muslim males are given higher precedence. In America, everyone is equal. From this sort of teaching flows sedition, and that’s what the ISA brings. The Fairfax BOS is well aware of those who attend: photographing bridges and threatening to assassinate the President. Get as tough with these people as you are with those who aren’t cleaning their front yards! These are people who want to see Jews and Christians and Americans die; people who want to see a lot of us killed. When Abe Lincoln spoke to Congress in 1862, he said “even we here bear the power and the responsibility.” Tonight, the Fairfax BOS has the power to say no. We believe the ISA is a threat to our community, capable of doing very bad things. I would ask you to demonstrate the sort of toughness you demonstrated with these property owners. Tell the ISA once and for all and those in the world who think the way the ISA thinks that there are Americans who are not going to take it. When men and women are putting their lives on the line every day and night, it’s an outrage to think there are people walking the streets of America who preach these things.
7.13pm: Denise Lee: What’s it going to take for the Fairfax BOS to do the will of the people, and not just those who are members of a special interest group with deep pockets? What is it going to take for you guys to shut the school down? Will the texts that say it’s OK to kill? Met a former ISA teacher who is scared to death and is terrified that he will be put to death for what I am about to tell you. He says it doesn’t matter if you remove what’s in the textbook. The teachers at the ISA have the lessons down pat. Children were singing songs of killing Christians. When the teacher who was a Christian complained, the children responded that they would not kill him, but just all the other Christians. Many are concerned the Fairfax BOS is selling out the community for money. Connolly accused Lafferty of “hate mongering” even after it has been revealed Connolly received money from a Saudi communications firm. Connolly also received donations from CAIR members and avid ISA proponents. Yet the ISA got its lease renewed, and the majority of Fairfax were betrayed by their elected official. Love it or hate it, the Tea Party movement is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Tired of those who whine about their abuse but continue to rake in benefits from government. We have asked politely to shut down the ISA, members of your board have ignored and even maligned us. We’ve asked, implored, and begged. Now we’re telling you. We’re mad as hell, and we’re not going to take it anymore.

7.19pm: Andrea Lafferty: Executive Director of the Traditional Values Coalition. Asking the Fairfax BOS to deny the lease to the ISA. The possibility that a Saudi operation would not be extremist is about the same as finding a McDonalds that would not sell a Big Mac. The ISA operates daily under the principles of Shariah law. It misguides the pupils into believing that they must violent repress in order to preserve their faith. 15 of the 19 terrorists at 9/11 cited their Muslim faith as reasons for executing the attacks. Proven that the Saudi curriculum advocates violence, even to the point of demonstrating how to cut off the hands and feet of violators of Shariah law. Would you allow this sort of thing in public schools? At the first controversial hearing with the ISA, it was Connolly who called us slanderers. Do you remember this? Shariah law in action and in America, I am sickened and appalled by this. Shame in Congressman Connolly for holding up this criminal. Shame on the Fairfax BOS for giving cover to Shariah law. Shame for your aggressive stance against us at the last public hearing. Leasing property of the county is not a civil right. Anti-American hatred, violence, and child abuse is not allowed. As we heard tonight, you care about rats and broken windows. Make a decision based on what the people want. We oppose Shariah law being promoted in a building owned by the taxpayers.
7.24pm: John Cosgrove: Springfield’s native son, co-worker to two members of the military killed by terrorists at the Pentagon. I am here to stand up against the baseless bullying of us for bringing up facts against the Saudi school. Supervisor Gross, if you attempt to accuse us of slander, then demonstrate this or leave it be. If you intend to compare this against your Catholic faith, then compare it and contrast it with examples. Is there a member of Fairfax County Staff that celebrated an Al-Kuds (Jerusalem) Day, at the same time Connolly was taking money from foreign governments. Since tonight seems to be about money, how’s about 12 pieces of silver? (places 12 dimes and a nickel for Supervisor Hyland, leaves them at the podium).
7.28pm: Nina Shea: with a specific religious freedom foundation… specifically has reviewed the textbooks of the ISA. Her reports can be found on the Hudson Institute website. For the record, I support religious schools, but the ISA is different. It would be irresponsible for any government authority to sponsor this school, and the Fairfax BOS should not extend the lease. As recent as two years ago, textbooks advocated killing specific religious sects and preached jihad. ISA’s accreditation is now under question and is up in the air, and is requesting their current curriculum to be open for study. ISA also teaches that militant jihad is a sacred duty, not only against Jews, but against Shias. After these reports came forward, ISA began using textbooks that were heavily redacted along with other material that is not publicly know. What is ISA currently teaching in its textbooks? We simply don’t know. ISA currently is failing 5 of 7 areas of accreditation. Written testimony has the facts for further review.
7.33pm: Robert Patrusek: The issue before this board is whether it will continue to rent this property to a foreign power who has played a dangerous two-faced game with this country: Saudi Arabia. One that pretends to be an ally of the United States, but when it’s charitable institutions indoctrinate young people in ideas that promote terrorism. This is not my opinion, it is the opinion of two well respected US Senators published in 2003 (Kyl and Schumer). This article has support from various articles of the 9/11 Commission. Schumer and Kyl submitted this article over seven years ago. What has changed? What have they done to improve the situation, particularly the funding of terrorism through their educational institutions? Not much has changed. This is not my conclusion, it is the conclusion of others.
