You have got to the heart of the issue. The other major religions of the earth are essentially personal in nature. Islam is essentially a political ideology (Sharia) and that's what is confusing the Western-Centric "tolerance" people as they project their "values" on the Qu'ran and Islam.

Islam is a system of government that must be imposed on the Dhimmis, polytheists, atheists etc. Muhammad declared "Islam must dominate, and not be dominated," and that may be acheived by deception ("War is deceit"-Muhammed said). Islam is not like the other major religions of this earth. The Unbeliever must be deceived, dominated, and finally, if he/she does not submit-they must be exterminated. If anyone wants to read an interesting book "The Myth of Islamic Tolerance; How Islamic Law Treats non-Muslims" edited by R Spencer, you will find a factual collection of essays regarding this and a more balanced view instead of a biased one put forth by scholars who allege that Islam is a religion of peace, justice and tolerance. There you will find factual records of total suppression of human rights in Islamic society, the real meaning of jihad which means armed conflict against ALL nonbelievers, and the policy of dhimmitude which is the life of Christians and Jews under Islamic Law. Some of the conclusions are very enlightening....and very disturbing. Get educated people, forewarned is forearmed!
