WTF? While this is shocking on its face -- more of the counter jihad movement imploding -- it is characteristic of Westergaard's peculiar and obvious discomfort at being the accidental tourist in the fight for the West.
When Geert Wilders first premiered FITNA, it was Westergaard's cartoon that opened that movie. In March 2008, Kurt Westergaard threatened Geert Wilders with a lawsuit, and Wilders would have none of that internecine warfare. Wilders pulled Westergard's now infamous cartoon and inserted one by the "Scarlet Pimpernel," whom I suspect is Wilders himself. Such a Renaissance man, eh?
Anyway, Westergaard is now suing the leader of the Stop the Islamization of Europe movement and my colleague and partner in the trans Atlantic counter jihad coalition (SIOA), Anders Gravers, for the implied use of the image of the cartoon during a street protest. Yes, Gravers did not even show the cartoon. Both the SIOE (Stop the Islamization of Europe) and SIAD (Stop Islamization of Denmark) are named in the suit.
Will I get sued for running Westergaard's toon? Will every blog and news site get sued for running what is now tantamount to "an act of war" -- depiction of the Prophet Moe? Did Westergaard ever even claim copyright on this cartoon?
Perhaps some good will come from this meltdown, and those who assumed leadership but failed abysmally will finally be rendered irrelevant -- as have been most of their feeble attempts in the fight. Putting this guy up as a hero was .........ill conceived -- which was painfully apparent when he threatened to sue Wilders. Westergaard was always a reluctant 'hero' -- hardly an icon for the fight of our lives.Freedom Defense Initiative (FDI) event, Jihad the Political Third Rail, in Washington, DC, February 2010. I invited Gravers to speak.
Muhammad-cartoonist Kurt Westergaard – viewed by many as a hero and a symbol of freedom of speech – has now decided to run a lawsuit against SIOE, SIAD and Anders Gravers in collusion with the Union of Journalists, which handles the case.
The well-known autonomous activist Rune Eltard-Sørensen, who was jailed for splashing red paint on the Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has been assisting in setting up the case for the Union’s attorneys. This may be the reason why the damages have been set as high as they have, the amount being 250.000 kr. (€ 33.590, $ 43.412)Fivetotwelve has asked Anders Gravers the following questions:Fivetotwelve: How do you feel being sued by someone, with whom you are in the same boat with in many respects?Anders Gravers: I do not think that we are in the same boat. Kurt Westergaard has stated that he has nothing against Islam, and that what he drew was not Muhammad at all. Kurt Westergaard has erroneously been put up by the world press as a critic of Islam and a proponent for freedom of speech.
Fivetotwelve: But the Bailiff’s court did forbid that your display Kurt Westergaard’s drawing, because he has the copyright?Anders Gravers: Neither the SIAD nor the SIOE have displayed the drawing since the court-order, in spite of claims to the contrary. At the demonstration, the day following the court-order, we did not use the Muhammad-cartoon. We just used a pair of eyes covered by a burka, but we kept the poster’s original text, so that people could believe that Mumammad was underneath. The police can testify that he was not, because the posters were checked by the police before we were allowed to demonstrate, and they found nothing resembling Muhammad underneath the burka.
Fivetotwelve: How come you got a court-order not to use the muhammad-cartoon, while the rest of the world may use it freely?Anders Gravers: I believe that the Police Intelligence Service (PET in Danish, please do not use the English acronym! (translator’s note)) is behind this. I cannot be absolutely certain, of course, but many things point in that direction. First of all Kurt Westergaard was under PET protection, and when you are together with people 24 hours a day, they may influence you. Kurt Westergaard ‘phoned me on Wednesday, when we were to have our demonstration the following Saturday, and asked me not to use the drawing in our demonstrationThe following day a police officer hands me a summons to appear in court the following day. Friday the court-order is handed down forbidding our use of the drawing. I find it highly unusual that Kurt Westergaard should be able to pull the strings that lets him to get out a summons at such short notice, only one day after I spoke with him, and that he as an individual could get ahead of all the other court-cases pending in Aalborg. At that time one normally had to wait three months for a court hearing. Naturally, one individual cannot accomplish that.
This happened during the second muhammad-crisis when muslim thugs burned cars, because they felt offended because the drawing was shown a second time. So I believe that the PET was afraid that our use of the drawing might incite the moslim world to run amok once more against Denmark, and that they therefore were ready to use any means to stop our demonstration. Kurt Westergaard was used in their game.
Fivetotwelve: When will the hearings take place?
Anders Gravers: On the 19′th of may at 9.15 hours.
