Jews still have to put up with this dreck. Hitler was born in Austria, not Germany as many believe....
Israeli fencer Daria Strelnikov won the gold medal at the cadet's fencing world championship in Austria Saturday night. However, as the 14-year-old athlete stood at the podium waiting to hear the Israeli national anthem, she was greeted by a disturbing quiet.
Strelnikov and a fellow teammate on the podium decided to fill in the silence by singing Hatikva themselves. They were joined by their coach, and other supporting voices in the crowd.
If anyone grabs video of this, I'd like to see it.
You can take Hitler out of Austria, but there are still millions left like him.

You can take Hitler out of Austria, but there are still millions left like him.
Pamela, this an evil smear. 'Evil' because it portrays millions of Austrians to be national socialists still, 'Smear' because it's false. Sure, Austrian has its share of stupid, Israel-hating lefties, but it's no worse than other European countries (Norway, Sweden comes to mind - my country Denmark has its share).
On behalf of my fine Austrian friends, I ask you to apologize for this. It's untrue and unfair.

On behalf of my fine Jewish friends, they want their lives back.
I did not say all but Austria has a contemtible history, even now. And Malmo? Sweden? And Norway are vile to the Jews.
Spare me your platitudes. They couldn't even play the anthem of the winning team because they are Jooooooos.

Pamela, if I or my Austrian friends can help your Austrian friends by exposing the problem and the persons responsible, please let me know.
Anti-semitism needs to be dealt with, with precision. We need sniper rifles aimed at Aftonbladet and the like, not nukes against entire countries. We dealt with the evil article in Aftonbladet, we're consistently critical of the hard left for their anti-Capitalistic, anti-semitic views, and we're constantly on our toes against anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias. That goes for my Austrian friends as much as anyone.
This event could, unfortunately, have taken place in just about any European country. I know for sure that anti-Semitism is stronger in Hungary, the problems in the Nordic countries were exposed in Behind the Humanitarian Mask (full pdf here), and France is a mess, as usual, with Le Pen and the like.
There's a particular problem for Austria to deal with stealth Jihad - the non-violent infiltration of state institutions - in that Islam since 1912 has had explicit recognition in Austrial law. This makes it harder to use legal means to counter the Jihad - depicting millions of the roughly 8 million Austrians as Hitler-sympathisers is neither true nor helpful.
Anti-semitism needs to be dealt with, with precision. We need sniper rifles aimed at Aftonbladet (the organ harvesting article...) and the like. My Austrian friends and myself are here to help.

This is bull$hit, plain and simple. Sunlight is the best disinfectant! What an insult!

Vienna is beautiful but it's strangely on edge. The youth act so desperately hyperactive and falsely gleeful, as if they are in a rollercoaster on it's way down the biggest dip. It has an air of desperation. Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die. That sort of atmosphere.
As for the Hatikva, it sounds so much better when it's sung by dear, true, feeling hearts than a CD recording. The 14 year old Daria Strelnikov and teammates did it better justice. Good for them! Their parents should be extremely proud.
Keep fighting, Henrik. Don't allow the islamo-fascists to steal your nation and culture away from you and let everyone know Israel has a friend in Denmark!

Related, I am very pleased by the reaction by Daria Strelnikov and her friends. That's the way to do it!

Got curious. Here's more on the Hatikva.

As a sportsfan I am interested in learning which tournament this is. There is no record of a world championship in fencing for cadets being held in Vienna on the website of FIE (The International Fencing Federation) or on the website of the Austrian Fencing Federation). The next cadets world championship is to be held in Azerbaidjan in March 2010. However a few weeks ago the European Junior Championships was held in Odense in my home country Denmark. Daria Strelnikov competed in the Epee event and ended 15th, allthough she was must younger (born January 6, 1995) than most of her competitors, who was born in 1990 and later).
Are you sure this is not a private school tournament or something similar.
In many smaller sport events it is the responsibility of the visiting team to bring with them a cd or casette with their national anthem to have it played.
Never the less it is disgusting not to play the national anthem, but I find it hard to believe it was because Strelnkov was a jew.
I have tried to search the internet, but have not found any explinations, but remember the words of Barrack Obama "don“t jump to conclusions" (sorry bad joke).

This is an internation European confederation contest (see details in cadet circuit http://www.eurofencing.info/EfcEng/defaultE.htm)
The cometition is in Modeling.
If any Austrian wishes to show this is not representative of Austria then today there is the male cadet Epee competition. Anyone who will get to encourage the Israeli fencers is more than welcome.

Thanks, amist. Last minute, but I'm trying to make one of my Austrian friends bring an Israeli flag :)

Henrick, Yes it is a short notice. :)
Posted by: amist | Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 07:20 AM
Blogs & Skype are great tools that make short notices possible. Didn't work out this time, though. My contact is not on Skype this afternoon.

Pamela, I agree the treatment of Israelis on the international stage is vile, but maybe by now Obama has found an interpreter who speaks Austrian, and he can go straighten things out.

A possibility that does not seem to have been considered is that a recording of Hatikva was not available. In such a case, though, the organizers should have apologized for not having it available.

Netanyahu just said Israel will NOT have any of this unilateral declaration of a Fakestinian Homeland crap ... GO BENJI!!! Israel belongs to the REAL God ... and you don't divide HIS land without serious repercussions.

I don't think it's so much hatred of the "good for being good" as much as it is hatred of the Jews for being Jewish.
Antisemites even try to claim that Hitler was Jewish...

Henrik,
The TRUTH can never be a "Smear".
A "Smear" is a Lie, But the Truth is THE TRUTH!
No Doubt there are MODERN-DAY Austrians such as yourself, BUT CERTAINLY NOT ALL!
And that's NOT even referring to Muslims in Austria.
Pamela is absolutly right about Austria, which actually a couple of decades ago had a NAZI WAR CRIMINAL,Kurt Waldheim as ITS ELECTED President.
The "Anschluss"of 1938 was NOT an Invasion, but a BLISSFUL annexation of OSTREICH/Austria to the 'Third Reich"
The Jewish lives Pamela refers began a LIVING HELL that day, when they were pulled into the streets of Vienna and other Austrian cities and towns and MADE TO SCRUB THE STREETS ,sometimes with tiny brushes and one Survivor I knew told me with his TONGUE.
Hitler was Austrian
A HUGE percentage of TOP Nazis were Austrian.
Adolf Eichmann, the SS officer who RAN THE HOLOCAUST was Austrian.
Ernst Kaltenbrunner, who replaced the assassinated Rheinhard Heydrich as #2 in the SS (under Himmler),and head of the Siechherheitsdienst(SD) and Gestapo,WAS Austrian.
Yet ,unlike Germany, Austria was treated like a LIBERATED Country.
So No , Not ALL Austrians ,today, are Jew Haters , but ,and with the Muslims included, there is Anti-Semitism in Austria.
To NOT Play the Israeli National Anthem is a form of NOT RECOGNIZING ISRAEL !
Posted by: CHOI | Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 03:40 PM
CHOI, anti-semitism is the problem, not Nazism. Anti-semitism is on the rise throughout Europe, fueled by the unholy alliance between Islamists and the Left. We need to focus on that in order to defeat it - and I don't think Austria plays any significantly leading role in that. Swedish daily Aftonbladet was out with a vicious smear lately, 'criticism of the state of Israel' is rampant, and lots of little steps are taken to delegitimizing Israel. That's evil - but it isn't Nazism.
As for the 'Anschluss', Austria actively resisted it for five years, with loyal backing from no other than Italy under Mussolini! Only when Mussolini went from silly to evil by aligning himself with Hitler did the Austrian resistance break.
I do know that Austria never had her Nazi heritage properly cleaned out - Kurt Waldheim is a case in point - but anti-semitism, not Nazism, remains the key problem.
I don't think we disagree significantly about the essence here, actually. Even though it's not open Nazism, it's still evil.
BTW, one of the root causes for modern antisemitism was that National Socialists didn't understand modern banking, and how people could get so rich without physical labour. Jewish dominance in banking sparked jealousy, which morphed into anti-semitism because noone could (or would) identify just why the Jews were doing so well...

Israeli athletes, including females, are required to have big brass balls.
Remember the Munich Massacre!!!
I was six years old at the time and the images of those horrible events are burned into my consciousness. The Europeans were not helpful to say the least. In fact it appeared that Germany was working in collusion with the Palestinian terrorists and there local left wing supporters.
Posted by: Jonah | Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 08:41 PM
I found an explanation for this at the German blog Politically Incorrect (in German).
In brief, they checked the hymns in advance and found that they had the wrong one for Israel. Being short on time (and probably Internet skills - download is easy :), they decided that playing the wrong hymn would be worse than not playing any, and this is what took place.
No need to 'Cry wolf' over this one. There are many genuine cases of subtle anti-Semitism to deal with.
