“A young woman who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim’s chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes.”

UPDATE: The following letter from an Iranian student was received by The Jerusalem Post via a professor at a leading American university with close ties to Iran:(hat tip Rut)
Salaam, sorry if I didn't answer to your e-mails. The Internet connection is extremely slow these days... Yahoo messenger, MSN, text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all reformist and networking Web sites are filtered. (I just got to briefly log in to Facebook last night with a "filtershekan.")
There are rallies every day... organized by word of mouth from one event to the other, and then by phone calls, and strangers just telling you to show up as they pass you by or as you are waiting behind red lights. Yesterday, it was supposed to be from Enghelab to Azadi, but it literally started at Emam Hossein Sq. (Fooziyeh) and spread all the way to Ekabatan. The number of protesters should be estimated in the millions. They were from every layer of society.
Southern Teheranis, Northern rich kids, Chaadoris, Ghertis, Hizbullahi, young, old, kids, etc. A huge sample of the Iranian nation, with all its diversity, was there, determined to make a change. They feel betrayed and insulted.
The radio and TV warned people all day long not to attend, as the rally didn't have the "permission from the Ministry of Interior" and warned of serious consequences if it took place, but no one cared.
Everybody went. The Yegaan vijeh (anti-riot police) first tried to intimidate people as they were gathering, but the immensity of the crowd then made them back up and hide in a nearby police station.
Today, the rally is supposed to be at Meydoon Vali Asr. There are words that the next one will be in front of Sedaa o Sima (National TV station).
Yesterday the rally was calm and peaceful until the crowd started to disperse at the end. Then the Lebaas shakhsi (armed thugs without uniform) and some anti-riot units showed up with more confidence. They started a fire in one corner of Azadi to attract and entrap the most enthusiastic of protesters, then started firing tear gas and shooting.
I didn't see it myself, but I heard that a man was shot in the eye.
Chants were all either conducted against Ahmadinejad or in support of Mousavi. Nothing more "sensitive" than that. It's what I call "smart protest." People are extremely vigilant about what to say... Some chants were a little more "personal" and a bit more offensive to Ahmadinejad.
Mousavi, [former president Muhammad] Khatami, [his brother] Muhammad Reza Khatami, [Teheran Mayor Gholamhossein] Karbaschi, Masjed Jamei, [former vice president Muhammad Ali] Abtahi, [reformist Mahdi] Karoubi all showed up. I missed Mousavi's speech, but Abtahi was just a few meters away from where we were. People cheered them a lot.
Apart from rallies, people cry "Allahu Akbar" every night around 9 p.m. from rooftops and cars (well, it is supposed to be 9 p.m., but Iranians are always late. So they really start around 9:30). There are also sporadic riots and tire-burning in town. Night riots are much more violent. Sa'adat Abad, Shahran, Yousef Abad are some of the hottest corners. Universities are really tense, too. Police and thugs have already stormed dorms a couple of times and seriously wounded students.
As for casualties, all we hear is rumors. I can't confirm any... One thing that I can tell with certainty is that people are really determined. They all say there is no stop to this until they get results...
Girls are extremely active in all these rallies (a little less in night riots where patches of young men are more visible). They courageously charge anti-riot police, chant slogans in front of them, lead the crowd, etc., but they are equally beaten too. The police seem to have no limit in the use of force. They are disproportionately violent. They don't use fire weapons, but they don't go easy on you with their clubs. They literally beat up protesters to death if they don't get rescued by fellow protesters or somehow break away and run.
The level of brutality is exceptional, but it is amazing to see how people stand up to them. I heard from many witnesses that thugs were brought by bus from smaller cities to assist police in the crackdown...
I estimate that more people will show up for today's rally compared to yesterday.
The word is that everyone should wear black with green bracelets or scarfs. The good thing about Vali Asr square is that it is right in "downtown" Teheran. It would be such a show of force by people. The national TV can't just keep ignoring it. (Not one single word of yesterday's rally was reported last night, except a really short footage showing Mir Hossein standing on his car to talk to his "supporters" that "contest" the results. The camera didn't zoom out one bit to show the immensity of the crowd...).
Pray for protesters and for the country. Your support means a lot, as people happily tell each other how Iranians abroad are gathering around embassies to support them. Internet sites are filtered here, so please inform people inside of events and rallies by e-mail if you hear of any. I testify with confidence that this is the most authentic, grassroots and beautiful movement from the people, by the people and for the people. No outside force, no money, no conspiracy is involved.
It's all about people telling each other where to gather next time, pledge to show up and keep their promise. There is a spirit of fraternity, determination, resistance, courage, solidarity and generosity that no words can describe. I thank God to have seen this in my lifetime, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I think Americans generally ARE getting tired of Ogiggles-the-clown, their and our country's Usurper-in-Chief. Ogiggles is so wrapped up in his smarmy adoration of himself that he is totally clueless as to how despicable his tacit partnership with the Iranian mullahs looks and actually is. (And by the way, Ogiggles is on record as saying that he considers democracy to be "dangerous"--well no wonder he's remaining silent about Iran's pro-democracy movement!!!). America's leftwing and Islamic dominated media has also robbed Americans of their voice: what we see in the news media in no way represents Main Street America--so it may APPEAR Americans are apathetic even on this matter. But I do not believe that this is actually the case. I think Americans really DO care anout freedom for Iranian people. I care. Doesn't everyone, really?
I personally have begun to seriously doubt that Obama will make it through the end of this year with his presidency in tact--if he even makes it through the year at all. Ogiggles' silence amidst this suffering of the Iranians' undermines the image Ogiggles worked so hard to create. That's good; hopefully it will speed up his impending political demise.
And I have begun to doubt that the American public is going to forgive Obama for his unforgivable (if tacit) alliance with the Iranian mullahs coupled with all those other Third World dictators that he befriended under the guise of his campaign promise that he would "talk to everybody."
So throwing democracy under the bus wasn't such a smart thing for Ogiggles to do politically after all.

"I personally have begun to seriously doubt that Obama will make it through the end of this year with his presidency in tact--if he even makes it through the year at all."
He should not have allowed to be put here in the first place. Obama is giving tacit approval of this Hitler in Iran, by standing on the sidelines saying nothing, and Congress, the Electoral College, and the Supreme Court, gave their approval of an Indonesian citizen Imposter President running this country.

pamela:
the u.s. government should be lending at the very least moral and verbal support to what the iranians are doing, even though it will mean death to some because of the encouragement. they are the true martyrs.
it is b.hussein obama's legacy of shame that he has not done more in this, and that he has given his tacit (if not outright) approval to maintaining the mullahs and clerics in power in iran. in my view, it is because he is a muslim zealot.
i do not think that the theocracy is in trouble. the revolutionary guards and the militia, the vicious basij, remains loyal and deadly, and the police steadfast for the regime. again, there simply have not been sufficient inroads into these organizations to cause their loyalty to khamenei to waiver, and these thugs sure as hell are not gonna turn on their masters just to see themselves exposed to the wrath of the people. they will remain loyal to the theocracy, because of religious zeal, financial incentive, a favored position in society, and to save their own scaggily butts from a rightfully exacted vengence.
they have not waivered, and they appear more than willing to beat, maim and kill people to maintain khamenei's rule.
so, it will be most likely some few more deaths, perhaps in the scores, and then a cessation of the hostilities as the drive for reform peters out.
does that mean that these people have died for no avail?
i think not.
they will not topple the theocracy or the mullahs. but, they may force change in who runs things, and they may force change in the composition of the supreme councils, and maybe even the dinner jacket gets his head put on the block. maybe he won't come back from his trip to russia. and, just maybe, the iranian drive for nuclear weapons, and the desire to front the international terrorist jihad may be re-examined.
who knows.
but, it is likely there will be some reform to accomodate the views of the protestors, and, as in all such matters, not a few of them will be taken into the power structure so as to "co-opt" them, to use a 60's phrase for describing what happened to our 60's radicals.
perhaps their views, those of the iranian protestors, may someday prevail.
one sobering caveat.
remember the optimism we all had that russia might be coming into the light? well, putin and the supernationalists have put the kibosh on that, haven't they, and russia slips back into the perpetual darkness of spirit it has always known. so, any reform in iran may be extremely transient, and they, e.g., the governing regime, may slip right back into the fanatical fundamentalism they have espoused for 30 years now. the ruling clique, is, after all, fundamentalist mullahs & clerics.
we will pick up no few mathematicians and engineers and such from this. but, at the cost of injecting islam into our own midst. this prospect i do not care for, though i wish the iranians all the luck in the world in their quest to rid themselves of theocracy. but, there are too few protestors, and they have not chosen to die in numbers sufficient to shake the faith of most of their fellow citizens.
remember, that to a great many iranians, khamenei speaks for g_d, and that g_d speaks through him.

I unfortunately do not remmeber the source that I read that in. I think it was in a Wall Street Journal editorial a few weeks back on Obama's policies towards the judiciary. I didn't make quite as much of it as you are now for the reason that I have known all along that Obama is anti-democracy and intends to undermine the US Constitution whatever way he can. His free personal and professional associations with the Muslim Brotherhood which has been plotting to destroy the western democracies with a charter drafted in 1982 should convince anyone of that.
The most dangerous upcoming developments: Obama amnesty for ilelgal aliens and ACORN's involvement in the upcoing census. Watch for non-whites to outnumber whites at which point Obama will attempt to declare the US Constitution void and create both a dictatorship and armies to attack US citizens. This is what he has been up to for god knows how long, I am sure of it.

It is also possible that some of the intelligent or fair-minded people in this Admin, should they exist, might be actually worried about getting more protesters killed.

Just think of what the benefit would be if this regeime was to fall. Perhaps the threat of a necluer armed Iran and the threat of Isriel being wiped off the map would just go away. Right now Iran is probably the only place on earth where people like Osama Bin Ladin can hide without fear of being captured or killed. I believe the war on terror can not be won without bringin down this regeime. That should be the desired result. Unfortunately this all comes at a time when we are stuck with a salesman rather than a leader.

Omar, here is some information for you about an organization called "The Apostates of Islam":
"We are ex-Muslims. Some of us were born and raised in Islam and some of us converted to Islam at some moment in our lives. We were taught never to question the truth of Islam and to believe in Allah and his messenger with blind faith. We were told that Allah would forgive all sins but the sin of disbelief [Koran 4:48 and 4:116]. But we committed the ultimate sin of thinking and questioned the belief that was imposed on us and we came to realize that far from being a religion of truth, Islam is a hoax, it is the hallucination of a sick mind and nothing but lies and deceit.
Some of us have enbraced other religions but most of us have simply left Islam without believing in any other religion. We believe in humanity. We believe that humans do not need to follow a religion to be good. All we need to follow is the Golden Rule. All we have to do is to treat others the way we expect to be treated. This is the essence of all goodness. All good religious teachings stem from this eternal principle [but not Islam]. The Golden Rule is all that humanity needs.
Why Mohammed was not a prophet:
One who claims to be a messenger of G-d is expected to live a saintly life. He must not be given to lust, he must not be a sexual pervert, and he must not be a rapist, a highway robber, a war criminal, a mass murderer or an assassin. One who claims to be a messenger of G-d must have a superior character. He must stand above the vices of the people of his time. Yet Mohammed's life is that of a gangster godfather. He raided merchant caravans, looted innocent people, massacred entire male populations and enslaved their women and children. He raped the women he captured in war after killing their husbands and told his followers it's okay to have sex with their captives. He assassinated those who criticized him and executed those he wished when he came to power. He became the de facto despot of Arabia. Muhammed was bereft of human compassion. He was an obsessed man with his dreams of grandiosity and could not forgive those who stood in his way. Muhammed was a narcissist like Hitler, Saddam or Stalin [or Obama]. He was astute and knew how to manipulate people [as does Obama] but his emotional intelligence was less evolved than that of a 6-year-old child. He simply could not feel the pain of others. His ambitions were big and he honestly believed he was entitled to do as he pleased and commit all sorts of crimes and his evil deeds were justified.
Why the Koran is not from G-d:
A cursory look at the Koran reveals that this book is full of errors. It is replete with scientific heresies, historic blunders, mathematical mistakes, logical absurdities, grammatical errors and ethical fallacies. It is badly compiled and it contradicts itself. There is nothing intelligent in this book let alone miraculous, yet Muslims would kill anyone who dared to criticize it. In such a climate of hypocrisy and violence, truth is the first casuality.
Islam is the stupidist doctrine, the most backward and absurd belief. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being expended to combat Islamic terrorism but no effort is made to contain the ideology behind this terrorism. It is our belief that Islamic terrorism will not be eliminated unless and until the ideology behind it is exposed and eradicated. This is what we intend to do. The Apostates of Islam

Sorry Omar, but I feel that I learned everything I need to know about islam on Setptember 11, 2001. But I went to learn much more since then, and the more I learn about islam the less I like it. If religions are to be judged by the behavior of the people who practice them, then you guys are rock bottom. Real men don't try to make themselves look important by putting down women. You guys are not so brave or so tough when you meet up with the US Marines.

If one looks at "Apostates" in the internet, one finds hundreds and hundreds of testimonies from people from all nations, so many there wasn't room for them all. I wonder why this group isn't utilized and animated by those wanting to discourage the spread of Islam?

If I were U.S. President, I would be shipping guns to the average Iranian protestors every way possible, whether across the Iraq-Iran border, the Afghanistan-Iran border, air-dropping them into Iran, or what have you. I would also be giving unqualified verbal and moral support to the Iranian protestors in their quest for liberation from their theocratic oppressors. This is such a golden opportunity to take down an evil criminal regime which is the cause of most of the strife in the Middle East, all without having to fire a shot ourselves or send any of our troops into battle. If the protestors can't bring about the fall of the Islamic regime, then it becomes very likely we are going to have to go to war with it in the next few years. Leftists like Obama care about being popular and power above all else. They dream of being remembered as great men by historians. He was presented with a golden opportunity here to make an extremely positive mark in world history by playing a part in bringing down a purely evil regime. He blew it. Instead if he is remembered at all, his legacy will be as a villain who collaborated to perpetuate an evil regime that has menaced the world for over 30 years, and in all likelihood made a major war necessary.
While the Iranians may have to wait until 2013 before there is once again a U.S. government who will give them sincere moral support in pursuing liberty, there should be a way of letting them know that the American people overwhelmingly support their pursuit of liberty. By the way, has anyone heard of any U.S. governors or 2012 Presidential hopefuls giving unqualified moral support to the Iranian protestors against the Islamic theocracy? I bet that's something the mainstream media would choose not to report.
