The demonstration in Antwerp began around 2 o'clock in the afternoon. When the police dispersed the demonstration around an hour later the atmosphere was grave and the rioters turned in the direction of the Jewish district.

Jewish community incensed over Hamas-flag in Brussel

The Jewish community is extremely upset about the presence of Hamas-flags at the demonstration for the stopping of the bombardment of the Gaza Strip in Brussel. This was announced by Michael Freilach, the editor in chief of the monthly magazine Joods Actueel.

According to Freilach the green flag with the white text from Hamas is a symbol of a terrorist organisation and is forbidden in Belgium...

...Various protesters in Brussels carried the well known Hamas-flag. The Jewish community is very shocked that this was permitted.'Hamas is and remains an officially a not permitted organisation of terrorists' said Freilich. There is a great feeling of unease in the Jewish community. It is feared that the situation in Brussel can get out of hand as happened on Wednesday afternoon in Antwerp by a demonstration of the AEL.

Israel's Gaza initiative has had some unexpected and unwelcome results worldwide, from the hacking of an Israeli newspaper website to the suspension of trade between a British and an Israeli telecoms company.

In Mumbai, India, a local council leader told The Hindu newspaper that the Chabad movement would not be allowed to renew its work at Nariman House in the wake of the Gaza operation. Six people were killed at Nariman House on November 26, including the Chabad rabbi and his wife, when armed terrorists seized the building and two major Indian hotels.

Vijay Surve said: "Under no condition can they come back here. We have absolutely no dushmani [enmity] with Israel or with the Chabad people.

They had lived here quietly for a long time. But this attack was targeted at them and this battle [in Gaza] between Israelis and Islamic terrorists is life long. Such an attack can easily happen again.

No one can guarantee it will not." He said local residents had expressed fears about their personal security should Chabad resume its operations in the building.

Meanwhile in the UK, the FreedomCall company has informed its Israeli counterpart, MobileMax, that it is cutting all business due to Israel's attacks on Gaza.

In an email, it said: "As a result of the Israeli government action in the last few days we will no longer be in a position to consider doing business with yourself or any other Israeli company."

A gang of pro-Palestinian demonstrators rampaged through the heart of the Jewish community on Wednesday evening, attacking businesses and assaulting a motorist.

Police and the CST have increased patrols and security following the incidents in Golders Green, North-West London, amid concerns of further trouble during Shabbat.

The group of around 15 men had been demonstrating in support of Palestinians in Gaza but then made their way along Golders Green Road, attacking the man as he got into his car.

They attempted to gain access to a number of kosher restaurants and Jewish businesses, and at one point entered Solly’s restaurant, but were thrown out by staff and diners.

Despite officers arriving in the area quickly, the gang was able to escape on the Tube.

Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Tucker, acting borough commander of Barnet police, said: “We were aware that the activity in Gaza was going to have an impact on antisemitism because of our very large Jewish population in Barnet.

“We have liaised with the CST in advance to make sure our response is joined up.

“We will not tolerate any incidents of antisemitism and will investigate any allegations robustly.

“People have a legitimate right to demonstrate but that cannot be a front for antisemitism or any other type of crime.”

A CST spokesman said: “The gang-related incident in Golders Green is extremely troubling.

“The idea that events in the Middle East can trigger this kind of rampage is something that the community, police and politicians need to now consider with the utmost urgency.

“The incidents that have occurred this week are very serious and reflect exactly why we have such a large scale security operation already in place.”

He said urgent talks were taking place with police to ensure a visible police presence around synagogues and other Jewish community sites.

Earlier this week, the slogans “Jihad for Israel” and “Jihad the only solution for Palestine” were daubed on buildings in Stamford Hill, Golders Green and Manchester, and outside the main entrance of Finchley Synagogue.

Abusive messages were also left on the switchboard of the Board of Deputies.
