Above is a picture from an article on 24Nov Yediot Ahronot titled "The Whole Problem on One Foot" by Asaf Veiss. It tells how (translated from Hebrew) "on one brutal day the Hamas captured 22 Fatah policemen. They severely tortured them until they had to have their legs amputated. Now they are undegoing re-habilitation at Tel Hashomer hospital. A touching humanistic gesture? It depends whom you ask. 'It's an embarrasment' exclaims on handicapped IDF soldier under care at the hospital -'they are terrorists in every way' .On the other hand, Dr. Yitzhak Ziv-Ner is convinced otherwise. 'This is a rare instance of reaching out to our neighbors"

... "Zecharia el-Raii: 'It will be a problem to go back home. The proteza has a computerized knee which needs to be charged all night. In Gaza there are always power outages such that there may be a situation where I won't be able to walk."

Fair Witness Questions Church Leaders' Responses To Israel's Attack on Hamas (hat tip Stephen)

Christians for Fair Witness on the Middle East ("Fair Witness") is greatly disturbed by the escalating violence in Israel and Gaza and the tragic loss of innocent Palestinian and Israeli lives. As many church leaders in the U.S. demand an immediate cease fire however, we challenge them to acknowledge not only the human suffering, but the political realities in the region.
"In November 2001, Hamas, which openly declares its commitment to the destruction of the State of Israel, began a terror campaign launching rockets from Gaza into civilian targets within Israel," says Rev. Dr. Bruce Chilton, the Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Religion at Bard College in Annandale, New York. "It was Hamas that chose not to extend the existing cease-fire on December 18, resuming hundreds of attacks on the civilian population in Southern Israel. It is Hamas that chooses, with the Israeli army sitting right outside Gaza, to continue to target civilian areas in towns behind the army."

"Maybe people don't realize what has been going on in Israel for the past seven years," says Rev. James Noland, Senior Pastor of Reveille United Methodist Church in Richmond, Virginia. "I was in Sderot in October 2007. Six Qassam rockets hit the town just before we arrived. We saw three blimps in the air that circulate 24 hours a day seven days a week to detect incoming rockets. When the sirens go off people have twenty seconds to get into a bomb shelter. Kids couldn't sleep, everyone was afraid to leave their homes, people died, people had their legs blown off. It was especially disturbing to see these Qassams up close -- they were built not to cause damage to structures, but to kill and maim human beings. It was terrifying. How many years are people supposed to live like that before putting a stop to it?"

Rev. Dr. Scott Ickert, pastor of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington, Virginia, says "I have to put myself in the shoes of the people of Sderot and ask if some foreign country started throwing rockets at the town where my family and I live what would I expect my government to do to protect me? I think only after we answer that question in an honest way can we presume to judge what constitutes an appropriate and adequate response to Hamas' provocations."

Rev. Dr. Peter Pettit, Director of the Institute for Jewish Christian Understanding at Muhlenberg College says "Hamas has claimed its place as the liberators of Palestine and the implacable foes of the State of Israel -- not only of Israeli occupation, but of Israel's very existence. We do not condone or encourage violent resolution of political conflicts, but we question some church leaders who condemn only Israel's military action while ignoring Hamas' courting and conduct of this war. We have to question church leaders who condemn Israel for a disproportionate response, while failing to set this action in the context of a long-term course of violent struggle to which Hamas has committed itself in defiance of Israel's legitimacy as a nation."

Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said on Sunday that a spokesman for the EU presidency, currently held by Prague, had blundered in describing Israel's ground assault in Gaza as "defensive." "It was his personal mistake," he told Czech TV, adding it was a "serious one." On Saturday Jiøí Potužník, Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek's EU presidency spokesman, initially described the Israeli operation as "more defensive than offensive." and told AFP this was the position of the Czech prime minister for the European presidency. The Czech Foreign Ministry later changed tack, while Mr Potužník himself said his words had been misunderstood. The statement on Saturday was denounced by an aide close to the Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, as well by the radical movement Hamas.

I wonder what blackmail they had on the Czech -- they know what it's like to live under the boot.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when they blackballed this guy. They sure are tough when it comes to Jews and free men -- and spineless, ball-less turds when quivering to Islamic jihad.

European Union president, the Czech Republic, said on Saturday an Israeli ground incursion in Gaza was "defensive, not offensive" action.

 

"At the moment, from the perspective of the last days, we understand this step as a defensive, not offensive, action," Czech EU presidency spokesman Jiri Potuznik said.

Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg is leading an EU delegation to the region on Sunday, and Potuznik said the presidency will wait to see the results of that visit.

However, France condemned Israel's move to send ground forces into Gaza.

"France condemns the Israeli ground offensive against Gaza as it condemns the continuation of rocket firing," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"This dangerous military escalation complicates efforts by the international community and in particular the European Union and France, the members of the Quartet and the states in the region to end the fighting, bring immediate aid to civilians and reach a permanent ceasefire," the statement said.

'Luxury of telling the truth'

The Czech Republic already defended Israel's strikes against Hamas last week. At the time, Foreign Minister Schwarzenberg said Israel had the right to defend itself.

"Let us realize one thing: Hamas increased steeply the number of rockets fired at Israel since the ceasefire ended on Dec. 19. That is not acceptable any more," Schwarzenberg told daily Mlada Fronta Dnes in an interview.

WE NEED NEW JEWISH LEADERSHIP IN THE DIASPORA

Our Jewish leadership has failed us miserably. One only has to look at the lack of response to Israel's latest defensive to see we are lost. We have failed the Jewish youth who haven't a clue as to who we are and why we must fight for our survival. I attend these rallies - the Muslim youth come out in full jihad drag. It is an event, a destination - theater. Jewish youth is conspicuously absent. Why wasn't Hoelien in front of the curve on this? Why wasn't he helping to organize counter protests against the onslaught of Jewish genocide rallies? Why didn't he rally the Jewish day schools, Hebrew schools, synagogues, Christian zionists, Pastor Hagee, friends of Israel  to come together and march against this scourge?

Instead he'll put together a conference call to spout Olmerde defeatist policy positions. That is not what the Jewish diaspora should be doing. We should be fiercely defending our RIGHT TO FIGHT FOR OUR SURVIVAL.

WE NEED PROUD, UNAPOLOGETIC, VIGOROUS JEWS TO LEAD OUR PEOPLE NOW. Mr. Hoelein, please step aside for the sake of the Jews.

I call on Malcolm Hoenlein to resign. He must see what a disaster his legacy is. It is irrelevant to me if his heart was in the right place; he failed badly. His cowardice and ineffective leadership has hurt the Jewish people. Remember the Palin fiasco back in September?  Hoelein was bulied into canceling Sarah Palin, a  great American and friend to Israel at an anti-Ahmadinejad rally. "Leaders" like Hoenlein will/can never get anything meaningful accomplished. His time is over.

Israel  faces existential threats. Iranian nuclear weaponization is either here or  imminent. We need real leadership and that is why Malcolm Hoenlein must go. He is old and tired and gutless. As executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations since June 1986, Hoenlein has demonstrated he is not capable of leading the Jewish people as the world prepares for a second holocaust. Pro-Israeli rally draws thousands to Paris Israel News

Several thousand demonstrators waved Israeli flags and sang Hebrew hymns in Paris Sunday to show support for Israel in its military offensive in Gaza, a day after a huge pro-Palestinian rally.

Warmly dressed to brave seasonably cold weather, about 12,000 demonstrators gathered on a street not far from the Israeli embassy, according to organizers, the CRIF, an umbrella group of French Jewish organizations. Police said 4,000 people turned up for the demonstration held on a side street after city authorities barred them from massing directly in front of the embassy.

UPDATE: Nidra Poller in Paris wrote me of the rally:

I couldn't attend the pro-Israel gathering today because I am working on an article to be published Tuesday in the Wall Street Journal, but I was informed by friends who were present. As you see, it is not possible to have pro-Hamas and pro-Israel demonstrations at the same time in the streets of France, because the jihadis would attack the Jews with full force and the police couldn't handle it. They were overwhelmed on Saturday by two to three hundred enraged Muslims. Imagine what would happen if 20,000 of the same brand were faced with 4 or 5 thousand Jews armed with blue and white flags!

There was plenty of police protection for today's demonstration, which lasted one hour, and dispersed in an orderly manner. The question is what kind of protection can be offered to the Jews of France in the coming days, as Muslims enflamed by the bloodied bodies flaunted in Gaza turn their rage on their usual domestic target? I worry most about Jewish kids at school...the lies they are going to hear, the anger that will be poured out on them.

I don't have to tell you, you know what kind of people were out there in the bitter cold today, voicing their support for Israel. The same kind you see in every pro-Israel rally in the States. This whole thing is global. The rage-spitting jihadi in keffieh at Times Square is the same as the one in London or Islamabad. And the well-behaved upright pro-Israeli on your street corner is the same as the one on my boulevard.

I heard the singing over my friend's cellphone. Osay shalom bim ramov, hoo osay shalom (excuse my transliteration, it's probably cockeyed). Earlier on, a heckler in keffieh came up to them, and a young guy from the security detachment shouted him down, but the older and wisers said, "calm it, young man, we want to maintain our dignity." I didn't hear of any other incidents... except they said some jihadis out of sight were shouting, trying to drown out the speakers.

Le Parisien quotes the Chief Rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim: "Our thoughts go first to Gilad Shalit, whose daily life is painful to imagine... Israel is fighting for its freedom and survival, nothing more. Israel is not seeking to destroy another nation. Jews and Muslims in France should have good, trusting relations." [Rabbi Bernheim's style is a bit curleycue...I can't translate it well at this late hour.]

Le Parisien notes the presence of singer Enrico Macias, UMP deputy Claude Goasguen, and Serge Klarsfeld, founder of the association of sons and daughters of the deported Jews of France [that's a bit curleycue too...what can I say, it's French for holocaust victims.]

The Parisien article closes with a reminder that yesterday's demonstration against the Israeli offensive in Gaza drew 21 to 25 thousand people.

They might have added that there are approximately 5 million Muslims in France (maybe 7 million, but who's counting?) and something like 600,000 Jews (and dwindling). Anyway, tens of thousands of people protesting a few hundred casualties in Gaza...isn't that disproportionate?

Look Who's Buying IndyMac Larrey Johnson, American Thinker

The FDIC has just announced that a consortium of private equity and hedge fund firms would be buying IndyMac. IndyMac was an independent "bridge bank" spun off of Countrywide Mortgage in the late 90s.  IndyMac acted as a "bridge bank" to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

New York Democrat Charles [dump the upChuck!]  Shumer precipitated the fall of IndyMac in May of 2008 by releasing "inside" information that the mortgage company was in dire financial straits. This disclosure created the initial "bank run" that is credited by many economists as the initial trigger that prompted the current mortgage crisis. The FDIC took over the operations of IndyMac in late summer of 2008.

So much for history. George Soros is in on the deal to buy IndyMac from the FDIC. Soros has a long history of making loads of money by first creating a financial crisis and then stepping in to grab up the bargains. Perhaps the most famous example of this tactic is "Black Wednesday," when Soros nearly sunk the entire economy of Great Britain through currency speculation.

George Soros has helped bankroll the campaigns of the Democrats in Congress who created this mess. Now, it appears, he is cashing in on his investment.

(IsraelNN.com) IDF tanks deployed on Sunday morning on the ruins of the Gush Katif town of Netzarim, preparing to encircle Gaza City just to the north. So reports Channel Two, based on civilian Arab reports from within Gaza.

The IDF’s presence on the road to Netzarim means that Gaza City is cut off from central and southern Gaza. Gaza City is the Hamas war and terrorism headquarters. It was also reported that IDF forces had taken up positions to the south, near the former Kissufim crossing, once used by Israelis to access their homes in the Gush Katif region.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (Jan. 4) - Israeli ground troops and tanks cut swaths through the Gaza Strip early Sunday, cutting the coastal territory into two and surrounding its biggest city as the new phase of the defensive against Hamas terrorists.

The military used firepower from tanks, artillery and aircraft to protect the advancing soldiers, and Gaza officials said at least 31 civilians were killed in the onslaught. The military said troops killed several dozen islamic terrorists.

Hanson on Gaza rules:

First is the now-familiar Middle East doctrine of proportionality. Legitimate military action is strangely defined by the relative strength of the combatants. World opinion more vehemently condemns Israel's countermeasures, apparently because its rockets are far more accurate and deadly than previous Hamas barrages that are poorly targeted and thus not so lethal.

If America had accepted such rules in, say, World War II, then by late 1944 we, not the Axis, would have been the culpable party, since by then once-aggressive German, Italian, and Japanese forces were increasingly on the defensive and far less lethal than the Allies.

Second, intent in this war no longer matters. Every Hamas unguided rocket is launched in hopes of hitting an Israeli home and killing men, women, and children.
