OBAMA ELECTIONEERING AT TAX EXEMPT MOSQUES: POLITICAL ISLAM AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE

Michael Freund came across this on the website of Muslims for Obama and sent me the screenshots. There is a listing for a "get out the vote drive" event scheduled to take place starting next week at an Atlanta mosque.

The mosque where the event is being held, the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam (website: here) is an IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization (see the listing on Guidestar here.

According to the IRS rules (here): "In addition, other activities intended to encourage people to participate in the electoral process, such as voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, would not be prohibited political campaign activity if conducted in a non-partisan manner. On the other hand, voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) would favor one candidate over another; (b) oppose a candidate in some manner; or (c) have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute prohibited participation or intervention."

Freund opines, I'm no lawyer, but clearly a group calling itself "Muslims for Obama" conducting a "get out the vote drive" is likely to "favor one candidate over another" or at least "have the effect of favoring a candidate", so it would appear that by hosting such an event, the Atlanta Mosque is violating its tax-exempt status from the IRS as well as misusing its status as a religious house of worship for partisan political ends.

I have been railing against this for months. This is ILLEGAL. They are not entitled to tax free status, enjoying "religious" perks while electioneering. Political Islam at taxpayer expense. I am sick of it. Where are our government protections? I pay enormous taxes - for what? To keep Barney Franks in satin and Chris Dodd in gold? Broke - all of it.

I am from Georgia, and have contacted my Congressman about this. Rep. Westmoreland is generally squared away - you would like him.

Seems like a remember some churches got in trouble last election for being to conservative and slanting towards Bush and were warned or lose tax exempt. I hope Rep Westmoreland looks into this asap.
