TERRIBLE TERRIBLE NEWS: NY SUN FINAL EDITION TOMORROW
One of the world's finest newspapers, The New York Sun is publishing it's final edition tomorrow. We have lost an important independent investigative voice in journalism. Clearly this is a further indication of the death of print. I rub my hands in anticipation over the future death of The New York Times. You'll see. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
The future of print is the blogs.
New York Sun Plans to Publish Final Edition Tomorrow (Update1) By Sarah Rabil (hat tip Van)
Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The New York Sun, the six-year-old newspaper that has never made money, plans to publish its final edition tomorrow, spokesman Michael Moi said in a telephone interview.
The Sun, begun as a conservative alternative to the New York Times and funded by Bruce Kovner and Michael Steinhardt, warned readers this month that it needed ``tens of millions'' of dollars to cover losses. Top editor Seth Lipsky said on Sept. 4 that he needed more investors, even after the original backers provided additional cash.
The Sun's distress came during a credit crisis that has stymied fundraising and led to the bankruptcies of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Washington Mutual Inc. Starting in 2002, the newspaper went up against the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal in New York. The Sun made gains in print advertising sales in recent years, Lipsky said this month. Industry ad revenue has posted record declines this year. CONTD...

Rumors of the death of NYT are likely to be just that.
There are too many libs who would have their head explode if it went.
What will happen is that when the price gets low enough Pinch along with some deep pocket lib enablers will take the paper private and toss all the sensible people out in a coup of the boardroom.
The only anchor to sanity at all has been the mutual fund and wall street people hooked in to the board room.

The NY Sun was a wonderful paper: I looked forward to receiving it every day.
You were guaranteed to read the unvarnished truth in its editorial pages, to get straight talk about the economy.
The additional bonus of this little newspaper is that they had unsurpassed coverage of the arts: theater, film, literture, history.
I learned more from this publication, in the few short years in was in print, particularly about New York City, than any other media source I can think of.
It will really be missed.
