Obama's run for the Presidency is definitely setting up America for the re-emergence of racial problems. If he does not get the Presidency, the Black people are going to be very upset. Blacks and Whites, in general, perceive the world differently and both views are usually contrary and opposing. If he becomes President, his race will be a continually sensitive issue whenever he is subjected to criticism. So let's see what is in store for us.

Slavery was not confined to the African people. The Muslims had thriving slave markets for people from all over. All the areas that were conquered by the Muslims provided booty and slaves. So they included the Christians and Greek speaking people of the Levant, the Middle East, Persia, Hindu and Buddhist people, and North Africans. Inhabitants all along the Mediterranean Sea were constantly captured and sold into slavery. Europeans from almost all regions of Europe were a source for slaves to the Muslim world through raids and warfare. Even the Vikings captured and sold Europeans to the Arabs. The total number of all those slaves must have been enormous. One sad aspect to this is that almost all of these people were taken away without any trace of what happened to them. They were regarded as cheap fodder and were discarded when used up.

As Norman brought up, slavery was not just an American experience - it is a common thread throughout history (do the Jews in Egypt ring a bell?). It was western civilization that put an end to most of the slavery in the world (William Wilberforce in England is one really shining example). Other than in communist countries like North Korea where the government is the slavemaster is slavery most common? Answer - in MUSLIM countries, especially in Africa.

John Conners, the Congressman from Detroit, has been talking the reparations game since he was first elected to Congress 40 years ago. I actually lived in his district at one time and told him at a town hall meeting back in 1968 that if he really thought he'd get this passed that he must be smoking something that wasn't legal. As the years have gone on he has gotten even more looney that he was 40 years ago and I think he and the Black Caucas think they will get it passed - and of course if Barack Hussian Osama Obama is President you know he'll sign it. To amplify what I said above - "OK buddy, now try and collect it. You'll get it from my cold dead hands".

Total lie about Islam and slavery. Not only was it officially abolished in Saudi Arabia in 1962, the Saudis actually paid reparations, £1000 per slave, which was three times the going price. Of course they paid it to the owners. I would be very careful about offending Obama, he is, as you all know a Luo (a tribe which originated in the Sudan) and there are some powerful ones, such as Joseph Koni, leader of the Lords resistance army in Uganda. That alone should prove that Obama is not a muzzie.

Reparations to those entitled was established and given after the Civil War by an act of Congress on March 3, 1865 under the name Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. The Freedmen’s Bureau provided support to 4,000,000 newly freed blacks during their transition from slavery to freedom. The Bureau built hospitals and gave medical assistance to blacks, more than 1,000 black schools were built, over $400,000 was spent to set up teacher-training institutions, churches were established and the Bureau acted as a clearinghouse of information to aide blacks in finding lost relatives. All major black colleges were either founded by, or received aid from, the bureau. The first federal welfare agency was established back in 1865 for those reparations.

I've always found it interesting how historians and race mongers like to gloss over the original American destinations of the early slave ships: Boston and New York.
The human cargoes were later diverted south due to the fact slaves froze to death in northern winters, being from hot African climes. If the northern part of the country had better weather year round, who knows what would have happened? Especially since many of the early northern banks and insurance companies invested in cargoes of this nature. Sort of an early derivative, as it were. Of the human kind.

i think the argument for some form of reparations to black americans is valid. the japanese who were interred got some. actually, i feel that native americans deserve quite a bit.

Natalie, Boston was only used after the British took the country from the Dutch. The very first slaves were landed by the Dutch in New York. After the civil war, British and US forces set up a squadron in West Africa to stop slave ships, they only caught Americans, guess what, none of them were Southeners.

i'd like to see some of the detailed history about post-civil war activity that was mentioned above. also, i really liked the idea of moslem reparations. the video is true: the islamic responsibility for slavery is huge. they have the money now, so they should pay it back.

certainly, if any reparations were to be made it should not be at the expense of regular american taxpayers. there are large wealthy corporations who's initial foundations were built from slave-trade related commerce.

That’s not what is being sought today. And your question: "how it is applied, to whom etc..." Exactly ,,, what about the blacks whose ancestors owned slaves, or Americans whose ancestors hadn’t immigrated before/during that time, what about mixed race couples or people who have adopted black children????
