Hamas Leader Sets Conditions For A Truce With Israel hat tip Michael
3/12/2008 11:03:06 AM Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, has called for a truce with Israel on a set of conditions.
Speaking at Gaza's Islamic University on Wednesday, Haniyeh demanded an end to Israeli military activity in the Gaza Strip, a lifting of Israeli economic sanctions and the opening of Gaza's borders as conditions for a break in the bloody fighting that has killed dozens of people recently.
"We are talking about a mutual comprehensive calm, which means that the enemy must fulfill its obligations," the AP quoted Haniyeh as saying. He called on the Israelis to stop the assassinations and invasions so that a ceasefire can be implemented.
"Egypt is trying on this issue. We, as Palestinians, are waiting for the Israeli answers," Haniyeh said. "The ball is in Israel's court," he added.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas confirmed Monday that an agreement on a truce between Israel and Hamas had been reached, the al-Arabiyah network reported. Abbas made the comment during a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman.
