GANGS of rioters set fire to cars and garbage trucks in northern Copenhagen after demonstrators evicted from a youth centre earlier in the year tried to occupy a new building.

Five youths were arrested in the capital after 28 cars and 35 garbage trucks were burned, Copenhagen police duty officer Jakob Kristensen said.

Danish media said arrests in other towns brought to 29 the number of people police were holding.

Scores of cars and several schools have been vandalised or burned in the past week.

Police could give no reason, but said that unusually mild weather and the closure of schools for a winter break might have contributed.

Uh, maybe it's their belief system. Global warming is not responsible.

Police arrested two Tunisians and a Dane of Moroccan descent on Tuesday for planning to kill a cartoonist who drew one of the cartoons printed in a Danish newspaper two years ago that roused a storm of protest in Muslim countries.

There have now been over 300 fires.

Firemen and ambulances workers attacked with cobbles.

The trouble started before the cartoons were republished. It began with a crackdown on drug dealers.

After death threats and a plot to kill Kurt Westergaard, the bomb in the turban cartoonist. A Moroccan Dane and two Tunisians were arrested after the plot was uncovered by PET, Danish security services.

Kurt is living in hiding under police protection. In response to the murder plot 17 Danish papers reprinted the controversial cartoon. This included left wing papers that had opposed the cartoons when they were first published.

The police had cracked down on drug dealers who had responded with gangs of "youths" burning cars and rubbish containers, blocking roads etc. Shortly after this there was an incident with an elderly immigrant man and the police, the police asked him to move his van that was illegally parked and then used some force against him, what happened here is unclear but it was no Rodney King. Then came the cartoons.

carports, with cars. Some of these were next to blocks of flats.
Bicycle sheds,
rubbish containers, these serve blocks of flats. Some are quite large.

Fire and ambulances workers stoned with cobbles and attempts to fire bomb them.

This has gone on for ten days.

The latest thing is attacks on two sun tanning centres. One was bombed and one burnt out. It is not known if this has any connection to the other stuff or is just criminal. [This is not a joke.]
