OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: A US court has ordered the government of Iran to pay $12.9 million to the family of a Hebrew University student who was killed in an 2002 bomb attack on the campus in Jerusalem. The American student, Marla Bennett of San Diego, was one of nine students and workers killed in an attack at the cafeteria of the university's Mount Scopus campus on July 31, 2002, the university said in a statement on Tuesday. Bennett, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, who was 24 years old at the time of her death, was a graduate student in Judaic studies. In his decision, US District Judge Royce C. Lamberth in Washington determined that the bombing was carried out by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. "It is undisputed that members of Hamas committed this extrajudicial killing of Marla Bennett, and indeed took credit for it," the judge's decision said. It added that there was "satisfactory" evidence that "Iran has continuously provided material support to and sponsorship of Hamas and its members so that they may undertake terrorist attacks like the one in this action. "The court ordered Iran to pay various sums to Bennett's parents and sister for wrongful death and compensation for emotional distress totaling $12.9 million. - AFP
