UK University Lecturers Vote for Boycott of Israeli Universities - James Meikle
Delegates at the first conference of the new University and College Union in Bournemouth voted by 158 to 99 Wednesday for "a comprehensive and consistent boycott" of all Israeli academic institutions. A boycott might involve refusing to work with journals published by Israeli companies or collaborate on research contracts with Israeli academics.
    But Sally Hunt, the general secretary of the union, said: "I do not believe a boycott is supported by a majority of [120,000] UCU members, nor do I believe that members see it as a priority for the union." The boycott was also opposed by the education minister, Bill Rammell, who said: "The UK government fully supports academic freedom and is firmly against any academic boycotts of Israel or Israeli academics." Harold Tanner, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, have condemned the British University and College Union resolutions that support campaigns to boycott Israeli academic institutions and to provide unconditional financial aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority:
    "These obscene resolutions have all the faults that academics normally deplore in their profession: a superficial and flawed understanding of the subject, clear bias, and antagonism to the open exchange of ideas. Their call for unconditional financial support for the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority, which continues to terrorize Israeli civilians and calls for Israel's destruction, demonstrates that the sympathies of the majority of the union's re! presenta tives lie with a terrorist group rather than the victims of terror....The resolution asserts that boycotting Israeli academic institutions is not anti-Semitic, but singling out, demonizing, and delegitimizing the Jewish state, as the resolution does, is by definition just that." Many of you have asked for contact information for UCU (University and College Union) members who voted to boycott Israeli academics.  Below,  the names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of the regional and local  heads of the union.  Feel free to express your opinions to them, keeping in mind that not everyone on this list voted in favor of this resolution.  Sally Hunt, joint general secretary, for example, has stated that she voted against it.

Israel's Minister of Immigration and Absorption has called upon Jews to refrain from making contributions to British institutions of higher learning.  I say, why just Jews?  I call upon all those who are committed to justice, freedom and truth to  give their contributions to academic institutions which stand firmly behind academic freedom and cultural cooperation, and which are not tainted by racism and anti-Semitism.

Unfortunately, UCU members, and the institutions that employ and nuture them, are guilty until proven innocent.  Let's hear something outloud from Cambridge and Oxford, etc. removing themselves from this shameful calumny.  Until then, silence is acquiescence.

Unbelievable. The UCU's lame answer to the question "Why just Jews" is the most pathetic and obtuse load of horse shit I've read in many a year.. These people are totally brainwashed.

I've been waiting for someone in that disturbing organization, or maybe just the UK in general, to stand up and declare they will not be part of this obscenity. Has Jew hatred become so fashionable and popular that it's so out in the open, in our faces, and there's no one left to stand against it? Does the entire United Kingdom believe it's right and moral to keep the Jews out - has it really gotten to that point? If not, where are the opponents of this right-out-of-the-1930's Jew hatred? It's sickening.
