Let me ask you a hypothetical question. What do you think America would do if Canadian soldiers were firing dozens of missiles every day into Buffalo, N.Y.? What do you think our response would be if Mexican troops for two years had launched daily rocket attacks on San Diego -- and bragged about it?

I can tell you, our response would look nothing like Israel's restrained and pinpoint reactions to daily missile attacks from Gaza. We would use whatever means necessary to win the war. There would likely be numerous casualties on our enemy's side, but we would rightfully hold those who attacked us responsible.

More than 1,300 rockets have been fired into Israel from Gaza since Palestinians were given control two years ago. Israelis, however, have gone to incredible lengths to stop the war against them without harming Palestinian non-combatants. But make no mistake, Israel is at war. The elected Hamas government regularly repeats its official promise to destroy Israel entirely and replace it with an Islamic state. Hamas openly took Credit for killing one woman and wounding dozens more last week alone. The Palestinian strategy is to purposely target and kill Israeli civilians. Then, when Israel goes after those launching the attacks, Palestinians claim to be the victims. If Palestinian civilians aren't hurt in the Israeli attacks, they stage injuries and deaths. Too often, they garner sympathy and support from a gullible or anti-Semitic media in the international community.

Israelis, themselves, are often incapable of facing the damage they inflict in self-defense. Knowing this, Islamic extremists are using their own populations as human shields.

I'm beginning to wonder how much longer this vicious plot will work though. International sympathy for Palestinians has diminished as the same Islamofascist extremists have brought havoc to Madrid, Bali, Somalia, London and elsewhere. More importantly, Israelis themselves are suffering so badly, they may be on the verge of losing their sympathy for the people who have sworn to kill them.

Imagine what it would be like to live, knowing that a rocket could fall on you or your children at any minute. Half of those who live nearest to Gaza have fled their homes. Those remaining are traumatized by daily warning sirens and explosions.

The irony is that Israel has the military might to easily win the war that is being waged against them today. They haven't used that might, in the past, out of compassion for Palestinian civilians and because it could trigger a wider regional conflict.

That balance of power is about to change, though. If Iran develops nuclear weapons, the very existence of this tiny nation of Israel will be threatened. The Iranian regime has left little doubt that it intends to see Israel "wiped off the map. Hamas is using the same language, not coincidentally, and has announced it will begin launching missiles into Israel from the West Bank too.

If the world doesn't act to stop Iran's nuclear ambitions, it must be prepared for the consequences of Israel defending itself.

IRAN: 14,635 ARRESTED IN MORALISATION CAMPAIGN

In the four weeks since a highly publicised government moralisation campaign kicked off, 14,635 people were temporarily detained under strict new Islamic dress code laws punishing offenders with arrest. Another 67,000 people were reprimanded by police, according to a tally kept by the local Rooz daily based on police statements. Only in airports and train stations some 1,115 people, mostly women, were arrested while 17,135 were not allowed to board planes or trains as they were not dressed properly.

I strongly support the wall that the Israelis have built, which has greatly reduced terrorist attacks — and believe that it’s very important for the United States to help Israel improve its missile defense in order to prevent the sort of attacks that country suffered during its war with Hezbollah last year. Incidentally, I’ve been encouraging Israel to build up her missile defense since back in 1987 as well as supporting the funding of joint missile defense technology programs such as the Arrow program.

Additionally, while the United States should do what it can to resolve the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians, it’s simply not possible for the Israelis to make peace with people who refuse to recognize their existence, kidnap their soldiers, and blow themselves up in crowds of Israeli civilians. So, until the Palestinians renounce terrorism and stop their attacks on the Israeli people, peace will be out of reach. Let me also add that I’ve been to Israel, have seen the importance of regions like the Golan Heights to their security, and believe that Israel should not be asked to give up any more land in order to make peace with the Palestinians.

I consider Israel to be America’s best ally in the Middle East and strongly support Israel’s survival as a free nation. So, if I become President of the United States, people who care about the fate of Israel can feel confident that they’ll have a friend in Duncan Hunter.

Farahat Sa'id Al-Munji: The Prophet said that circumcision is obligatory for men, and is noble for women. This means that for the sake of her honor, a woman can be circumcised. This noble act can be either carried out or not. Moreover, this noble act is subject to restrictions nowadays. I once had a discussion with a gynecologist, who said: "A man brought his daughter to me, and I told him she must be circumcised immediately." Why? Because he discovered that her clitoris was so big that it was bound to cause her pain or bother her when she reached puberty, and therefore, she had to be circumcised. He told me that other girls came to him, and he said they should not be circumcised. Why? Because their clitoris was normal in size, and did not bother them. It would be crazy to deal with such a clitoris, which does not protrude to an extent that might bother the woman, when it rubs against her clothing and so on...

So let me understand this, a big clitoris is a bad thing? Isn't a penis just a big ole clitoris? Not to get to clinical here in the Atlasshpere but perhaps cutting off all "giant clitorises" aka penises might be an answer to the growing problem of extremism in Islam. It may sound extreme, but hey extreme is their thang.

Guys, all these things appear in Islamic law. Don't think we are making these things up. It all exists [in religious law] and is determined... We say that if the clitoris is so on and so forth... What am I saying? When the Prophet Muhammad met Umm Salama in Al-Madina – what did he say to her? "Are you still doing what you sued to do in Mecca?" In other words, are you still circumcising girls, like you used to do in Mecca? She said: Yes. He said: "Trim it, but don't cut it off." According to another version, he said: "Shorten it, but don't cut it off." "Trim it" means leaving room for sexual desire. That little bit on top, which looks like the rooster's crest, is shortened, but just the upper part. She needs to cut off the prepuce, the little bit at the top.

UK University Lecturers Vote for Boycott of Israeli Universities - James Meikle
Delegates at the first conference of the new University and College Union in Bournemouth voted by 158 to 99 Wednesday for "a comprehensive and consistent boycott" of all Israeli academic institutions. A boycott might involve refusing to work with journals published by Israeli companies or collaborate on research contracts with Israeli academics.
    But Sally Hunt, the general secretary of the union, said: "I do not believe a boycott is supported by a majority of [120,000] UCU members, nor do I believe that members see it as a priority for the union." The boycott was also opposed by the education minister, Bill Rammell, who said: "The UK government fully supports academic freedom and is firmly against any academic boycotts of Israel or Israeli academics." Many of you have asked for contact information for UCU (University and College Union) members who voted to boycott Israeli academics.  Below,  the names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of the regional and local  heads of the union.  Feel free to express your opinions to them, keeping in mind that not everyone on this list voted in favor of this resolution.  Sally Hunt, joint general secretary, for example, has stated that she voted against it.

Israel's Minister of Immigration and Absorption has called upon Jews to refrain from making contributions to British institutions of higher learning.  I say, why just Jews?  I call upon all those who are committed to justice, freedom and truth to  give their contributions to academic institutions which stand firmly behind academic freedom and cultural cooperation, and which are not tainted by racism and anti-Semitism.

Unfortunately, UCU members, and the institutions that employ and nuture them, are guilty until proven innocent.  Let's hear something outloud from Cambridge and Oxford, etc. removing themselves from this shameful calumny.  Until then, silence is acquiescence.

Authorities Believe Religious Differences Played Role in Slaying of California Father, Daughter FOX News

ANAHEIM, California  —  A man held for questioning in the murder of a father and daughter in California was upset with the family because they broke off his relationship with another daughter for religious reasons, court documents indicated.

Friends told the Orange County Register newspaper the victims were devoutly Hindu, and court papers said the religions in question were Hindu and Muslim.

Iftekhar Murtaza, 22, of Los Angeles was arrested on a fugitive warrant Saturday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona, and was being held on Wednesday without bail.

An extradition hearing was scheduled Thursday.

The Register reported that Murtaza had a one-way ticket to Bangladesh.

Murtaza had not been charged with a crime but was considered a "person of interest" in the deaths of Jayprakash Dhanak, 56, and his 20-year-old daughter, Karishma, Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said Wednesday.

 

Murtaza was her ex-boyfriend, court papers indicate. He was upset with her parents and sister "for discontinuing the relationship due to different religious backgrounds, Hindu and Muslim," according to papers filed in a Phoenix court.

Two people stabbed, strangled and burned to death for what appears to be retaliation for the break up of a Muslim - Hindu couple (see photo of the burned out house where the third victim, the mother, was found).

 

Note that the police reports indicate two people did this horrendous crime, a very possible "honor" killing due to loss of face for the supposed Muslim suspect Iftekhar Murtaza . More here at OC Register and check out the slideshow.

Switzerland seems to be an unlikely locus for a battle over jihadist Islamism, but according to reports, its Muslim citizens, who make up about 5% of the total population, increasingly look to radical Middle East clerics for spiritual guidance. The country is also home to a controversial professor, Tariq Ramadan, whose visa to come to America was revoked by the State Department, and reports indicate there has been a rising tension between Muslims and non-Muslims there. In what could be considered pouring fuel on a fire, two weeks ago, the League of Swiss Muslims invited Sheik Salman bin Fahd Al-Odah of Saudi Arabia to participate in their annual conference.

Another Finnish newspaper publishes an article that degrades a Jewish parliamentarian.

The Helsingin Sanomat's [the New York Times of Finland] cultural editor, Hannu Marttila published Martti Rossi's [pictured] oily/smarmy "tongue in cheek" response to Finnish parliamentarian Ben Zyskowicz outrage over Rossi being awarded a cash prize by the Finnish government for his life time work in translating Shakespeare's classics into Finnish. [The state prize for literature carries with it not only the honor of the award itself, but also 15 000 Euros.]

The reason for Zyskowicz's outrage over the Finnish state's awarding of Martti Rossi with the prize, was for Rossi's role as a snitch for the Hungarian communist government back in 75'. Martti Rossi had informed on a Hungarian writer for speaking against communism during a visit to Finland, in which he compared communism to fascism. Dénes Kiss was right on the mark.

Ben Zyskowicz had asked the government after the award had been given:

"would have Culture -and Sports Minister (yes, Finland has a government minister for sports) Stefan Wall refused to award Martti Rossi with the prize had he known that Rossi had informed on the Hungarian writer, Dénes Kiss to the communist government."

It doesn't end there. The editor for the Helsingin Sanomat's culture section, Hannu Marttila, wrote a short screed in the comment section included with the article over Zyskowicz's initial outrage, in which he down played the whole affair.

would be comparatively simple and easy. This perception was certainly encouraged and so it seemed, confirmed by the American response to a whole series of attacks -- on the World Trade Center in New York and on U.S. troops in Mogadishu in 1993, on the U.S. military office in Riyadh in 1995, on the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000 -- all of which evoked only angry words, sometimes accompanied by the dispatch of expensive missiles to remote and uninhabited places. ...

The response to 9/11, so completely out of accord with previous American practice, came as a shock, and it is noteworthy that there has been no successful attack on American soil since then. The U.S. actions in Afghanistan and in Iraq indicated that there had been a major change in the U.S., and that some revision of their assessment, and of the policies based on that assessment, was necessary.

More recent developments, and notably the public discourse inside the U.S., are persuading increasing numbers of Islamist radicals that their first assessment was correct after all, and that they need only to press a little harder to achieve final victory. It is not yet clear whether they are right or wrong in this view. If they are right, the consequences -- both for Islam and for America -- will be deep, wide and lasting.

Er, pardon my skepticism here....but how fast does a "missile" travel anyway?  Because, unless you're both really lucky and have an ultra-fast shutter speed, I'm guessing you're not going to be able to click off a picture of a "missile" miliseconds before it impacts. 

I'm also guessing that the guy in the green soccer shirt wouldn't be able to follow said "missile" with his eyes. Notice how he appears to be looking right at the incoming "missile".

So, is this a case of a "doctored photo"?

YES! Score one for the good (the exceedinglyn good guys) Those Islamic thugs in Boston have dropped their lawsuit against  David Project, Concerned Citizens, Boston Herald and Fox! Wonderful news. I am sure Jacobs, Emerson et al were exposing truths about the Islamic dirty deals that they did not want to be made public. Of this I am sure. But the truth seekers over at  The David Project will continue their lawsuit To force disclosure of evidence on Boston Redevelopment Authority-Islamic Society Land Deal. David Project to Continue Public Records Lawsuit To Force Disclosure of Evidence on Boston Redevelopment Authority-Islamic Society Land Deal

         The David Project has announced that the Islamic Society of Boston ("ISB") and its officers have withdrawn all of their claims against all of the citizens who raised concerns about the ISB, its funding and its leadership, as well as all of their claims against the Boston Herald, Fox-TV and the various journalists whose investigative pieces about the ISB in 2003 and 2004 disclosed damaging information about the ISB and its controversial land deal with the Boston Redevelopment Authority ("BRA"). The ISB and its officers have abandoned all of their claims against all of the defendants they sued 2 years ago, without payment to the ISB or to any of its officers of any money whatsoever.

     The ISB's decision to drop all of its claims against all of the 17 defendants it sued back in 2005 alleging "defamation" and accusing them of conspiring to violate its civil rights comes just months after the defendants--who included a Muslim cleric, a Christian political science professor and the Jewish daughter of Holocaust survivors, as well as Boston civic leader William Sapers and national terrorism expert Steven Emerson--had begun through their lawyers to conduct discovery into the ISB's financial records, its receipt of millions of dollars in funding from Saudi Arabian and other Middle Eastern sources, its contributions to certain organizations and the records of certain of its officers and directors. The ISB's abandonment of its lawsuits comes only weeks after two of its original Middle Eastern Trustees, Walid Fitaihi of Saudi Arabia and Ali Tobah of Egypt, suddenly resigned as Trustees just before they were required to submit themselves to the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts court hearing the case.

     The David Project, whose public records litigation against the BRA forced the public disclosure of evidence regarding the below-fair-market land deal between the BRA and the ISB and the role played in that deal of BRA Deputy Director Muhammed Ali Salaam, will proceed exactly as before with its litigation, seeking the remainder of the documents presently withheld by the BRA. That litigation, The David Project v. Boston Redevelopment Authority, is on file in Suffolk Superior Court in Boston.

With tired eyes and mussed hair, Osama Eldawoody opens his door to an unexpected guest.

Siraj, 24, was sentenced in January to 30 years in prison, but for Eldawoody the case, now under appeal, still feels raw.

They say Eldawoody effectively goaded Siraj into plotting to plant explosives -- to be supplied by Eldawoody -- in the subway station, just below the Macy's store in midtown Manhattan, and then recorded those conversations.

Police and prosecutors say Siraj was already a violent terrorist just looking for an opportunity to strike. Eldawoody says had he not intercepted Siraj, the younger man eventually would have joined a real terrorist sleeper cell.

Protest shuts down clerics' visit The Record.com hat tip kenney

Dozens of irate protesters yelling "shame," "murderers" and "terrorists" shouted down a Waterloo meeting last night that was intended to build peace.

About 50 protesters stood around the meeting hall at Conrad Grebel University College waiting for the dialogue between Mennonites and Muslim clerics from Iran to begin.

Police from Waterloo Region and Toronto, Waterloo firefighters, paramedics and University of Waterloo police were called in in anticipation of protests.

They arrived around 6 p.m., winding down their operations by about 9:10 p.m., after most protesters had left the Conrad Grebel parking lot.

Dozens of Toronto officers remained on standby throughout the evening, staged in a nearby parking lot, but weren't required to assist Waterloo police, Waterloo regional police Insp. Bryan Larkin said.

"Everybody has a democratic right to protest," Larkin said. "The underlying issue here is public safety, and our role here was to maintain the peace."

The Toronto convoy -- including several cruisers, a specialized paramedic unit and a bus carrying riot squad officers from the Public Safety Unit -- left before 9:30 p.m.

The protesters, Iranians and Afghans from the Greater Toronto Area, stayed mostly silent during the opening prayers.

They shuffled around and held aloft a gruesome photo gallery of torture victims, hangings and firing squad executions they say were taken in Iran.

But less than a minute into a talk by a Shiite Muslim cleric from the Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute in Qom, Iran, the barrage of shouts erupted.

One by one at first, then hitting a crescendo of chanting "Down with the Islamic Republic of Iran!"

Brian Ross Reports: New Tape Old Threats from American Al Qaeda ABC

The former California teenage surfer turned al Qaeda propaganda chief, Adam Gadahn, repeated his threats to kill Americans on a new tape posted on the Internet Tuesday afternoon.

Wearing a white turban, beard and glasses, Gadahn issued what he called a set of six "legitimate demands," saying, "We don't negotiate with baby killers and war criminals like you, Bush."

But this being internet, Katy of CCSC send us this great video from Chilean TV who filmed perfectly the modus operandi of the chavista police attacking mercilessly students. There is one chilling moment where about a dozen police man (S.A.?) are pursuing on their bike a single pedestrian student and shooting him with "perdigones" to injury him without killing.

To watch this fantastic video "on the ground" you need to go here, and look for the image that I repost on the right. That image was on the bottom left quadrant last time I checked. Under that image there is a video button, push it and watch. Even if you do not understand Chilean accent, the video is as clear as they come.

And Chavez? No where to be seen. As it is now a routine in his life, when he loses the emotional battle he retreats somewhere (Cuba?) to lick his bruised soul while his lackeys finish the dirty job he does not have the guts to direct. And there are still people that dare to defend him! It is simply amazing what some people will be able to accept as long as Chavez gives free aspirin to some of the poor, not the poor, some of them.

Note the appreciable size considering that it is a spontaneous march of students already blocked earlier at Plaza Venezuela. Students rise in anger against RCTV shutdown in surprisingly eventful day

It was certainly a surprising day today in Caracas. It was as if the magnitude of the measure of closing RCTV only hit people today. Or maybe they were awaiting some form of miracle or last minute concession by a Government that is not given to such gestures once it has made up its mind.

Of course, it was all started by the University students who decide to protest what they viewed as a serious step by the Government to silence the media in its criticism of what the Government does and the constant watch over its actions and missteps. It is easy to say that RCTV participated in the so called coup/Chavez resignation event of 2002, but reality is that Chavez’ cohorts themselves never allowed the infamous “truth” commission to complete its investigation so that events and facts could be hidden, manipulated and distorted by them since then. Thus, RCTV, once referred to by Chavez as one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, became a lonely horseman, as Venevision and Televen are following the party line and getting the Government's business, while Globovision’s rating is a scant 5% of the audience and the Government probably understands it is a 5% that it will have en extremely hard time convincing to jump sides.

In contrast, RCTV had 40% of the audience, which was gone with the cancellation of the concession and whose possible rebirth from its ashes as a cable or satellite station, was impeded by the perverse and absurd confiscation of its equipment last Friday. Moreover, cable and satellite’s reach is a scant 28% for obvious reason, which would have severely limited its coverage anyway.

Just for knowing, Mother Sheehan -- said on that she'd rather live under Chavez's rule than in America. Go now asshat.

Venezuela to sue CNN

Venezuela says it will file charges against US cable network CNN for linking President Hugo Chavez to Al Qaeda.

It says it will also sue a Venezuelan TV network for encouraging Mr Chavez's assassination.

The move comes a day after popular Venezuelan TV network RCTV went off the air after the Chavez Government cancelled its broadcast licence.

Information Minister William Lara has presented what he says is CNN footage displaying pictures of Mr Chavez juxtaposed with those of an Al Qaeda leader.

Mr Lara says CNN also aired a story about the Venezuelan protests but used images taken in Mexico of an unrelated story.

"CNN broadcast a lie which linked President Chavez to violence and murder," he said.

Before the Duka brothers were accused in the Fort Dix terror plot, some of the people who live near them on a quiet Cherry Hill street say, they were bad neighbors.

They say lambs were slaughtered in the backyard with a kitchen knife.

Fetid diapers were tossed into an open trash Dumpster that sat in the driveway, near an array of cars and pickup trucks without license plates.

Roosters ran about.

Police cited them repeatedly on disorderly persons charges and for traffic offenses.

Despite the attention from Cherry Hill code enforcers and police officers, the Dukas' troublemaking continued until they and three other men were arrested earlier this month on charges of conspiring to kill soldiers at the Army base.

Now that the Dukas are jailed without bail, their neighbors in one of the Philadelphia region's biggest suburbs are wondering why it took an alleged jihadist plot to stop the violations of local ordinances and traffic laws.

Brothers Dritan Duka, 28; Shain Duka, 26; and Eljvir Duka, 23, are ethnic Albanians from the former Yugoslavia who were smuggled into the United States from Mexico as children in 1984.

Township records obtained by The Inquirer and further interviews paint a more complex picture. The records show that the police and township property maintenance officials were called to the Duka home at least 10 times over the last seven years. There were complaints about the Dumpster, the lamb, "sheep noises," a loud party, "juveniles running around," juveniles in the street with fireworks, unregistered cars, an illegal commercial sign on the front lawn, "running roofing business from home," and the parking of large trucks in the neighborhood.

Dan Keashen, an aide to the Cherry Hill mayor, said he didn't know the total number of complaints the township received about the Dukas because the township doesn't keep records of unverified complaints.

"Unfortunately, neighbors tend sometimes to have personal agendas when making complaints on another neighbor's home," he said.

One neighbor described it this way;

Then came the barnyard animals and the watermelon vines growing between their houses. On weekends, dozens of visitors would arrive in vans with New York license plates, the couple said. "The straw that broke the camel's back was when I looked out my kitchen window and saw the women slit a lamb's throat with a kitchen knife," Patty said. "I was so upset, I called my husband on the phone. He said to call the police and I said, 'No, call the Realtor,' " she said.

Mark, 39, said the couple complained several times to the township, "but they would say that the Dukas are taxpayers, too."

Other records show the Duka brothers had plenty of run-ins with police. From 1996 to 2006, Cherry Hill police charged Dritan Duka and Shain Duka with assorted disorderly persons offenses, including marijuana possession, improper behavior, prowling, disturbing the peace, and obstructing the administration of law. They were fined between $20 and $830 on various occasions and sent home, according to court records.

The three brothers were also issued about 50 traffic citations between 1997 and 2006 - more than 20 by Cherry Hill police - for speeding, driving without licenses, driving while on the suspended list, failure to appear in court, and other charges.

ICNA TOP DONOR TO OVERSEAS HAMAS FINANCIER

(Coral Springs, FL) Americans Against Hate (AAH), the terrorist watchdog group, is calling on the United States government to shut down the offices and freeze the assets of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) for its role in the financing of Hamas. As well, AAH is calling on the U.S. government to place the Muslim Brotherhood of Pakistan, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), on the State Department list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) for the same.

In August of 2006, just nine short months ago, JI announced on its website that it had presented, via its charity Al-Khidmat Foundation (AKF), a check for $99 thousand  (six million rupees) to the head of Hamas, Khaled Mashaal. Mashaal thanked JI and stated that Hamas would continue to wage Jihad (war) against Israel.

ICNA was founded in 1971 as the American arm of JI. On AKF's website, ICNA is listed as the charity's two top donors,, ICNA Relief USA and ICNA Relief Canada. Another of the listed donors is ICNA's charity, Helping Hand.

AAH Chairman Joe Kaufman stated, "We have incontrovertible evidence that ICNA is part of JI and that JI is funding Hamas through a charity that ICNA is the top donor for. Given this proof, there is no reason whatsoever for the future existence of ICNA. In addition, given JI's financing of Hamas and given JI's communiqués with the leader of Hamas, there are clear grounds for the placement of JI on the State Department list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. We call on the United States government to take immediate action, with respect to both of these organizations."

Ignorance, Cognitive Dissonance, and al-SadrBy Andrew G. Bostom

Re-emerging publicly on Friday May 25, 2007 for the first time since he went underground 4-months ago, Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr journeyed in a long motorcade from Najaf to the adjacent city of Kufa where he delivered a fiery sermon before 6,000 worshippers. "No, no for Satan. No, no for America. No, no for the occupation. No, no for Israel," he intoned-and his audience obligingly repeated-at the opening of this address. Al-Sadr then demanded that U.S. forces leave Iraq, and called upon Sunni Muslims to join his Shi'ite followers in fighting the American occupiers. "To our Iraqi Sunni brothers, I say that the occupation sows dissension among us and that strength is unity and division is weakness...I'm ready to cooperate with them in all fields." He was also critical of the nascent Iraqi government's inability to provide basic services.

While his major rival, Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq leader Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and is undergoing treatment in Iran, it was speculated that al-Sadr, backed by Iran, may have returned to parlay this Iranian support into efforts to consolidate his own power in Iraq. Al-Sadr's strategy hinges in part on his apparent belief that inevitably (and soon) the U.S. will reduce its troop strength, leaving behind a vacuum in Iraq's security and political power structure that he and his followers can fill. He is also said to believe that Iraq's current al-Maliki government may collapse in the near future because of its failure to improve security, public services, and the economy.

U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe's comments on al-Sadr's reappearance -- punctuated by the cleric's belligerent sermon -- can only be characterized as bizarre and delusional. Johndroe opined -- without any apparent attempt at deliberate irony --   that al-Sadr's diatribe somehow  indicated a desire "to play a positive role inside Iraq."  Added Johndroe,  "He [al-Sadr] has an opportunity to be a part of the political reconciliation process. We'll see if he and his followers participate."

HUH? There is something seriously wrong with this thinking. Moral illness.

Fifty years ago (1957), social psychologist Leon Festinger published his seminal analysis, A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, in which he observed

[P]ersons are not always successful in explaining away or in rationalizing inconsistencies to themselves. For one reason or another, attempts to achieve consistency may fail. The inconsistency then simply continues to exist. Under such circumstances-that is, in the presence of an inconsistency-there is psychological discomfort...The existence of dissonance [inconsistency], being psychologically uncomfortable, will motivate the person to try to reduce it, the person will actively avoid situations to reduce the dissonance and achieve consonance [consistency]. When the dissonance is present, in addition to trying to reduce it, the person will actively avoid situations and information which would likely increase the dissonance...Cognitive dissonance can be seen as an antecedent condition which leads to activity oriented toward dissonance reduction just as hunger leads to activity oriented toward hunger reduction.

GRAND RAPIDS -- Some local Muslim leaders are demanding Richard DeVos apologize for remarks he made to Cornerstone University graduates comparing the "Muslim world" to Hitler's global threat. 

Actually, Islam is worse.

A statement issued by a local mosque this week calls DeVos' comments at the May 5 Cornerstone graduation "hateful speech that seeks to lump the millions of us with a radical few."  

"What are you trying to say, Mr. DeVos, by comparing us to Hitler's war machine?" reads the statement by the Islamic Mosque and Religious Institute, 321 Fuller Ave. NE.  

Mosque leaders said they were "shocked and disturbed" by the comments, adding that lumping all Muslims with fringe groups is "equal to McCarthyism."

Mosque officers said they would like to meet with DeVos and give him an opportunity to clarify his remarks or see whether his remarks were relayed accurately. (MORE)

On Sunday evening Damascus celebrated the "victory" of Bashar el Assad in the referendum on the renewal of his mandate for seven years. The official results have not yet been published, but despite the opposition's boycott, the victory of the current president is already assured. Guysen reporting.

NO CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT Reform Party of Syria

Syrians were voting on Sunday in a no-contest referendum which will give President Bashar al - Assad another seven years at the helm of a Middle East regional heavyweight.

The Presidential Referendum was described by Syrian opposition as " a Sham built on a farce".
The opposition said it is boycotting the referendum and urged its supporters to vote "no to Bashar " if they had to participate.

The referendum will keep Assad 41 as president of Syria until the year 2014.

The ruling Baath party has called on voters to give a resounding "yes" to a new mandate for Assad, who it said "will express the hopes of the people and the expectations of the nation".

Sunday's referendum, in which about 12 million Syrians are eligible to vote, is the second involving Bashar al-Assad. Polling stations opened at 0400 GMT and are due to shut at 1600 GMT.

UPDATE: Tigerhawk saw a promo on one of the networks today for "Operation Hero Miles," a program of the Fischer House Foundation to recruit contributions of frequent flier miles to benefit wounded soldiers and their families (the idea being that the Foundation would get free tickets with the miles for family members to visit wounded soldiers in the hospital).

Anyway, apparently most of the major airlines are offering to match donations that come in before midnight Monday night mile-for-mile.  I did not look at all your blogs, but it seems to me that this matching program has not yet been promoted well enough among bloggers who would care.  So perhaps you can interrupt your weekend to write a little post on the subject. Saudis Arrest Christian for Entering Mecca Michael Freund, Jerusalem Post

Saudi officials have arrested a man in Mecca for being a Christian, saying that the city, which Muslims consider to be holy, is off-limits to non-Muslims.

Nirosh Kamanda, a Sri Lankan Christian, was detained by the Saudi Expatriates Monitoring Committee last week after he started to sell goods outside Mecca's Great Mosque.

After running his fingerprints through a new security system, Saudi police discovered that he was a Christian who had arrived in the country six months earlier to take a job as a truck driver in the city of Dammam. Kamanda had subsequently left his place of work and moved to Mecca.

"The Grand Mosque and the holy city are forbidden to non-Muslims," Col. Suhail Matrafi, head of the department of Expatriates Affairs in Mecca, told the Saudi daily Arab News. "The new fingerprints system is very helpful and will help us a lot to discover the identity of a lot of criminals," he said.

Criminals?

Similar restrictions apply to the Saudi city of Medina. In a section entitled, "Traveler's Information," the Web site of the Saudi Embassy in Washington states that, "Mecca and Medina hold special religious significance and only persons of the Islamic faith are allowed entry."

Highway signs at the entrance to Mecca also direct non-Muslims away from the city's environs.

WASHINGTON - Saying that "we are living in the eye of a storm," President Bush warned yesterday of the stark consequences at home if the United States gives up in Iraq.

"If we fail in Iraq, the enemy will follow us home," he said as he ticked off a slew of foiled terror plots, including one that has just been declassified.

"Al Qaeda's leaders inside and outside of Iraq have not given up on their objective of attacking America again," Bush said in a commencement address to cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

"The danger has not passed. Here in America, we are living in the eye of a storm. All around us, dangerous winds are swirling, and these winds could reach our shores at any moment."

Bush said that in January 2005, Osama bin Laden asked his top operative, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, to use Iraq as a staging ground for attacks within the United States.

Planned targets have included the New York Stock Exchange, reservoirs and U.S. military academies, such as the Coast Guard's, Bush said.

Bin Laden "believes that if al Qaeda can drive us out, they can establish Iraq as a new terrorist sanctuary," Bush said.

He also talked about how in 2003, intelligence officials uncovered and stopped an aviation plot led by an al Qaeda operative named Abu Bakr al-Azdi.

"Our intelligence community believes this plot was to be another East Coast aviation attack" rivaling 9/11 in death and destruction, Bush said.

Responding to Bush's speech, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid yesterday dismissed the argument for the Iraq war and slammed Bush because "under his watch, Coast Guard readiness has deteriorated greatly." With Post Wire Services

Report: Nobel laureate cancels U.K. trip over 'widespread anti-Israel, anti-Semitic current'  The Guardian

An American Nobel prize laureate has withdrawn from a speaking engagement at a London university, citing anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiment in the United Kingdom, a British newspaper reported Thursday.

According to The Guardian, Professor Steven Weinberg of the University of Texas told the Imperial College that his decision was motivated by a move by Britain's National Union of Journalists to boycott Israeli products.

Weinberg had been due to honor Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam, a co-winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize for physics, The Guardian said.

The paper quoted Weinberg as telling the college that he believes the NUJ's move stems from the "desire to pander to the growing Muslim minority in Britain."

In his letter of withdrawal, Weinberg wrote that, "given the history of the attacks on Israel and the oppressiveness and aggressiveness of other countries in the Middle East and elsewhere, boycotting Israel indicated a moral blindness for which it is hard to find any explanation other than anti-Semitism."

The Guardian said that Weinberg also pulled out of a 2006 conference at Durham University due to a boycott of Israeli academics imposed by lecturers' union NATFHE.

FIGHT AGAINST BOYCOTT OF ISRAELI MDs J Post hat tip Mara

American Jewish Congress president Richard Gordon has demanded that the World Medical Association - an umbrella body of national medical associations - dismiss a call for a boycott of Israeli physicians.

In a letter sent last week to World Medical Association President Dr. Nachiappan Arumugam, Gordon said the call by a group of British doctors for the expulsion of the Israel Medical Association from the world body was based on both "factual and legal distortions."

The main argument made by the British doctors was that Israel had "systematically flouted the fourth Geneva Convention guaranteeing a civilian population unfettered access to medical services and immunity for medical staff."

MAY 24--In a recent raid on an al-Qaeda safe house in Iraq, U.S. military officials recovered an assortment of crude drawings depicting torture methods like "blowtorch to the skin" and "eye removal." Along with the images, which you'll find on the following pages, soldiers seized various torture implements, like meat cleavers, whips, and wire cutters. Photos of those items can be seen here. The images, which were just declassified by the Department of Defense, also include a picture of a ramshackle Baghdad safe house described as an "al-Qaeda torture chamber." It was there, during an April 24 raid, that soldiers found a man suspended from the ceiling by a chain. According to the military, he had been abducted from his job and was being beaten daily by his captors. In a raid earlier this week, Coalition Forces freed five Iraqis who were found in a padlocked room in Karmah. The group, which included a boy, were reportedly beaten with chains, cables, and hoses. Investor's Business Daily runs a terrific commentary on Muslim population statistics  for America, which seem to be as exaggerated as the actual size of CAIR.

We've been told for years that Islam is the fastest-growing religion in America, and that the size of the Muslim population here has swelled to 6 million to 7 million. A new study pops that myth.

The Pew Research Center just concluded an exhaustive scientific study of the size of the U.S. Muslim population. It was able to identify only 2.35 million Muslims - less than half the figure commonly cited by Muslim activists.

Pew, a liberal group with certainly no interest in marginalizing Islam, described its study as "perhaps the most rigorous effort to date to scientifically estimate the size of the Muslim American population."

The bad news? The respondents were advised prior to asking them Muslim related questions that it was a "Muslim survey" thereby tipping the respondents off in advance. So there's plenty more where they came from.

So what does all this means? How does this impact the results of the polls? Clearly pollsters do not believe that revealing the purpose of a poll is the best way to get honest answers. Questions of trust must arise in other instances. So, why make an exception for Muslim Americans and why ask the most controversial questions dealing with 9/11, suicide bombings, Al Qaeda and Israel's right to exist after issuing the warning and not as part of the first series of questions dealing with President Bush and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq? They would have seemed very natural there.

So, I downloaded the lengthy PDF file entitled Moslem Americans: Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream. As all good pollsters, they knew how to control the interpretation of their poll. I started reading. It all seemed straight forward until I came to the following passage:

Slow Loading Atlas

I have been hearing from a number of  Atlas readers that the blog is very slow to load and/or crashing browsers (!)  -- I knew I was a powerful woman but that is not what I had in mind.

I need to move content off my main page so I will be tinkering today. Moving videos (they eat a lot of bandwidth) into expanded posts and limiting the number of posts on the main page. I should trim my sidebars as well.

But I I gotta get feedback. I have no problem loading my site so it is hard to know what does or doesn't work. Everyone is always telling me to slow down so this is new terrirtory :)

What can you buy for $11,319 these days? You can rent the 14-bedroom Christian Dior Chateau on the French Riviera for a week in December. Or, you can grab a 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty two-door pickup truck that's still in pretty good shape. Or ... if your taste runs toward the grisly, you and your Muslim extremist cronies might offer $11,319 on the open fatwa market to buy a head; specifically, the head of ''notorious woman'' and dissident writer Taslima Nasreen.

Separated from her body, of course.
The president of northern India's All India Ibtehad Council recently announced a 500,000 rupee (U.S. $11,319) bounty on Nasreen's head. ''She should be killed and beheaded and anyone who does this will get a reward from the council,'' declared cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan, because Nasreen made ''derogatory references against Prophet Mohammed in her writings.''

Propeller beanie be upon him.

Granted, Nasreen's writings which demand equality and dignity for Muslim (and all) women are, to many Islamic fundamentalists, a bit radical. She writes that Muslim women should burn their burqas, that women should be treated as equals, and that religion should have no place in law or government … heretical stuff to Islamic fundamentalists. Nasreen fled Bangladesh in 1994 due to widespread violence about her writing and spent many years in exile in Europe. She recently sought permanent residency in an area of India that is culturally similar to her native country.
