The Bush administration is once again in the process of committing a major policy blunder in the Middle East, one that is liable to have disastrous consequences and is not receiving the attention it should. This time it concerns the Israeli–Palestinian relationship. The Bush administration is actively supporting the Israeli government in its refusal to recognize a Palestinian unity government that includes Hamas, which the US State Department considers a terrorist organization. [How about the thousands of dead people they murdered? Ask them - if the notoriously Arabist State considers them terrorists they are savages Atlas] This precludes any progress toward a peace settlement at a time when progress on the Palestinian problem could help avert a conflagration in the greater Middle East.

The United States and Israel seek to deal only with the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, in the hope that new elections would deny Hamas the majority it now has in the Palestinian Legislative Council. This is a hopeless strategy because Hamas has said it would boycott early elections, and even if their outcome would result in Hamas's exclusion from the government, no peace agreement would hold without Hamas's support.

Hopeless yes because Abbas is as antisemetic as Hamas. Same wolf, different clothing.

The man was a Kapo for the Nazis. For those who don't know what was (please correct me if I have it wrong in any detail), a Kapo was a Jew who volunteered to serve his killers. Kapos would do things like handle bodies and every other unclean tasks you could imagine. Naturally, they got some degree of status and privileges for this, among others being the last on the death lists. Obviously this was of assistance to Nazi Germany's war effort as otherwise Germans or at least other auxiliaries would have been diverted from war efforts to perform such tasks. Kapos thus prolonged the war and, objectively, caused the deaths of Jews (and other prisoners) and of Allied soldiers and civilians.

Soros sold his soul to keep the breath in his body. My view is that Kapos who survived should be thankful they got the payoff they bargained for. And bother the rest of humanity no more.

Fine, he survived. He has obviously prospered. He may even have bred, though it is difficult to imagine with whom. You can't begrudge him those things.

But for him to open his mouth? To offer himself as a moral arbiter? The souls of the corpses he dragged to the incinerators cry out against this.

Let him go back to his hole and live out the rest of his unlovely life in peace, and more importantly, silence.

One can only imagine what he did to get through his experience in the Soviet gulag. If we were to meet, I don't know if I could shake his hand. Could I bring myself to touch him? Leprosy at least can be treated.

George Soros was not a kapo for the Nazis. He was what thirteen during the Nazi extermination of the Hungarian Jews in late 44-45. It is easy and safe to cast anger over the span of 60 plus years vis-a-vis how brave and selfless who would have been. Quite a lot of bullshit as well until you have a choice to save you own skin. Yes, bravery is easy to muster when the Nazis are all dead, but putting yourself in a 13 year-old Hungarian Jew's skin is quite another thing.

Condem Soros for his misguided socialistic approach; I have no problem with this, but I it is simply wrong from every level to cast apersions for what a person did to survive.

What makes an Oscar Schindler and what makes someone simply close their eyes to evil? Both can be good, moral, but one is compelled to risk life and limb. Some Jews fought back. Some prayed for the evil to pass. Some became Kapos to survive.

I have found nothing of the challenge of surviving the Shoah in my own life that allows me to issue a Kosher certification for the behavior of hunted Jews in World War II Europe. To further complicate the 'Soros L'affair'--while he may be an idiot with his pontifications on 'the theory of reflexivity' and other notions--I suspect some of the scorn heaped on him could very well stem from anti-semetism. Strange... hated by some for his 'foreign' 'secular' 'international' persona... the sad label of self hatred also could be an issue here

Soros on a 60 Mintues interview said that he never felt any guilt later on in life when he accompanied his gentile "father" in Hungary when they went around helping to liquidate Jewish property when the owners were shipped off to Birkenau Extermination camps. Ripper, Yes, I've seen it. I've read quite a bit about the topic of Hungarian Jews and 90 % of my father's family died in the killing fields of Hungary at the tale end of World War II.

The Jewish trauma of World War II was the same--and a bit different within the border of Hungary. Jews actually felt protected in Hungary and(read Wiesel's tome) many Jews even as late as 1944 felt safe within the borders of Hungary--both in the countryside and in Budapest.

The pro-Nazi Arrow Cross thugs took over in '44 and Eichman finally unleashed his killing field. The complete destruction of the Jewish Quarter within Budapest was only stopped by the end of World War II. Had the war lasted a few months over, another 200 thousand Jews would have died in Hungary.

Many Jews from the countryside moved to Hungary and did what they could to survive. Many faked baptism, changed names, ect.... Bottom line: what Soros did today is wrong--to single out Israel. It is naive, wrongheaded. But for him to feel guilt for his families' actions in world war II is not for others to judge. You, of course, can judge this... but until you walk in his specific shoes in 1944 and experienced the terror will you discover exactly how you would have acted. Would you have been a hero? a cog in the machinery? a Kapo ? commited suicide? joined the resistance ? been passive ? My only point here is that unless you are faced with those choices and trauma would you really know how you would act.

There have been psychological studies on Christians who rescued Jews in Poland or Holland in World War II. This was done to look for any common traits. There were none on the surface. Of great surprise to me, some of these true heros were actually anti-semetic, but morally opposed Hitler. All formed their decisions to rescue Jews, risk death, puth their families' at mortal risk in a split second, without deliberation; they simply chose to protect a fellow man, a Jew, because they could act in no other way. They had their faults, their positives, but they acted. 60 years later, had I been a Christian in Europe, would I have risked my life and my families to shelter my fellow man. I'd like to say, "yes, I would." But, in truth, I don't know. I may never know.

Personally, I would excuse 'almost' any behavior in the name of survival--looking in specific at actions of some Jews in World War II Europe. In that crucible, much can be forgiven. The easy, 'pat' answer is to say, "sure, I feel guilty." Having met him, I do respect his honesty; I like the guy, but I don't really agree with a single one of his solutions: in Eastern Europe or Israel. His recent piece on Israel describes two Hamas with a political wing. This sounds naive in the extreme. He looks on Israel and the Arabs as two parties in a business dispute. This is laughable and stupid, but not evil. Just my humble opinion.

I worked at Soros Fund Management, his hedge fund. It was my first job, and I was not the only one who didn't care for his policies. He paid me crap for living in NYC, but he spent millions else where. I worked 60 hour weeks; his management made sure you felt like crap.

The man is a hypocrite. I have heard has been doing poorly this year. He's also begging that they save Morgan Stanley so it will likely benefit him, since he always is marketing his exposure to the market. He likely has 40% of his assets at the Morgan Stanley Prime Brokerage. He's probably worried that if they go under that it will make things very difficult to run the place. In fact, they will have all of their swap and over-the-counter derivative contracts be terminated, and thus they will have to re-do them with others in a frenzy.
