ATLAS EXPOSE: ISLAMIC CHARITY SHAM!
MUSLIM ABUSE SHELTER TAX SHELTER?
NISA [North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused] is a non-profit organization [charity] of the parent Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), established as a [fiundraising] vehicle towards alleviating issues related to abuse and domestic violence. Our mission is to help men and women achieve domestic harmony and a happy family life in the SF Bay Area
But NISA, the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused, doesn't exist. After exhaustive investigative efforts, we find NISA is a shell. A cellphone. An 888 number that is not answered but several cell phones. The Islamic shelter for abused women (wife beating, btw, is in the Koran) has no shelter and offers no services other than referral to government shelters.
Using battered women to raise funds for what nefarious purpose? What exactly are they raising money for? In an ATLAS EXCLUSIVE, covert Atlas operative Julie blew the lid right off what appears to be a bogus Islamic charity. Julie has extensive experience in this field. Her husband is a Muslim and has written numerous books and articles exposing the jihad worldwide.
First off understand that Muslims do not believe in getting into anyone else's family business.
In Muslim households, the head of the family is the man, who is treated as a miniature god. The wife cannot hope to get to heaven unless her husband allows it. He has rights over in her, even in death (the afterlife.) The authorities, 99.9% of the time in Middle Eastern countries, turn a blind eye to any complaints a womanvoices in desperation, but they let the husband know she has complained...which brings her to more beatings...if not outright death.
Now they [NISA] have been co-fundraising with CAIR, and knowing that Islamic women do not seek help outside their families, I checked them out...
They list an 888 number for women to call. With a PO Box and that one phone line, they appear to be a worthy charity, able to collect huge amounts (from overseas??) and they now have the ability to funnel it somewhere, into buying properties, and who-knows-what, all with only a PO BOX.
This phantom Islamic abused women's shelter gives out awards (to give bogus cred to say Imam Tahir Anwar, one of the "Muslim Leader of Tomorrow");
He speaks 5 languages fluently, and was recently the recipient of the Community Service Award from NISA (North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused). More here
I wonder what his speaking fees were, and/or what that recipient award included.
NISA has hooked up with a local church as well. Julie first emailed the Unity Church trying to actually track down how much the Church had actually given the shelter and the folks at NISA. She sought to know if the shelter were actually operating from within that Church. Since NISA's website seemed to affiliate itself with the Church, she asked the Unity Church of Palo Alto for their relationship. Here is the exchange;
Well, check Google....your church appears there as associated with this group. One of your webpages references them as well.

I checked and this group has no address other than a PO Box, and yours, and they even refer to your church on their website.http://www.ask-nisa.org/They appearat joint fund raising events with CAIR, and other radical muslim groups to "fundraise" for the abused muslim women. However, nowhere in the US are there any muslim shelters for abused women, and I do feel your church should inform the FBI. CALL 4-11 in our area and ask for the local office of the FBI. They would be the ones to investigate anyway.
This group, NISA,says they have a toll free hot-line, 1-888-ask-nisa but someone should call this who is an agent and speaks fluent Arabic, and this should be the FBI. I am wondering who calls this hotline, since muslim women are too afraid to speak out about their problems. My husband is a convert to Islam. I know much about the subject, since I edit his books, one of which is on the very subject of women who are abused by islam.
This so-called non-profit group seems to have no other goal than fundraising......I would think you would want to avoid notifying them, but let the FBI know, and the FBI should do all of the contact. You could interefere in something crucial to our security......if you do not simply ask the FBI to look into it.

Subject: NA Shelter for the AbusedI am trying to locate the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused. I could not find it on Google. I came to your website, but I do not see how to contact them. Please tell me if there is such a shelter, and if it located within the one existing shelter in Santa Clara County .Thank you...If you have any contact info I would appreciate it.Julie W. Note: forwarded message attached.Julie finally called NISA - she called for help. No one answered. Ten minutes later, she got a call from a woman who apparently called back on a cell phone. When asked about the number, the caller, Saha, said she "forgot to do the caller ID block, *67 before she called Julie." She said they always do that for "security reasons." This is understandable since muslim women would not want their husbands to know they had called a shelter. But Julie is wonering what would show up on caller ID if she got an incoming call from their 888 number....Maybe the name Sriram Gopalan? Would someone please have them return a call from their 888 number?
The cell phone number belonging to Sriram Gopalan, which "Saha" called back from each time, is (650) 930-0978..."Saha" said they only recently got cell phones. Most likely she was the designated person to take incoming calls for the hotline, and they are routinely forwarded to one or another's home phones. She said they have no shelter. No counsellors, and no advice other than to refer women to a local shelter....or to listen as a friend might. Saha said they have excellent shelters out there [government sponsored ones!!] but would not name one, when sincerely asked. The phone is registered to Sriram Gopalan. Maybe some readers already want to call and ask for him!
The phone is registered to Sriram Gopalan.
Who is Sriram Gopalan? He owns the cell phone that someone used to return my call to NISA, the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused, a subsidiary of ISNA, the Islamic Society of North America, closely associated with CAIR.
I first learned of NISA through one of CAIR's email bulletins last Fall, about their joint fundraising efforts for an Islamic shelter for abused Muslim women. I looked to see what information was availble. The "shelter" consisted of a PO Box, at
NISA of ISNA

Email:
admin@ask-nisa.orgThe "hotilne's" hours are listed from 10 am PST to 1 pm, a time when few women likely to be being abused. The website is truly focused on donations from the public, and I do not see any accounting where this money is going. They do not say how close they are to their fundraising goals for building a shelter.
There is almost no oversight of non-profit organizations when it comes to the money they receive or spend. Their web site does not say how much they have raised so far through CAIR, etc. and the Palo Alto Unity Church donation given to them back in October, 2006. I wonder who is watching the barn.
Certainly not the FBI.
However, my initial call went unanswered, and I did not leave a message. I got a return call about ten minutes later from a woman who identified herself as "Saha." Her English was that of a native, or at least an immigrant who grew up in US schools. She claims to be Afghan. She indicated she was using one of their several cell phones to return my call...so I saw the number on my caller ID...(650) 930-0978. She indicated she should have used the *67 beforehand for "security" reasons.
Saha had no information whatsoever for my Pakistani "friend," an abused woman neighbor of mine....she took four hours to get the wrong information to me.....several emails and some phone numbers in my area of the country. None of them was viable. I called her back, and she looked on the Internet while we were on the phone, and found one local shelter to which she referred me.
I found that the registered owner of the cell phone has a number of other phones in the Bay Area, and numerous residences. My intrigue continued, as I saw that he listed his date of birth only as 1979, but claiming to be 31 years old. My calulations are he would be 27 if he were born in 1979.
I found discrepancies enough in the information I paid for, that I obtained an email for him from his Internet posts. I wondered if someone had stolen his identity. Being 28 years old would make him very wealthy if he owned all those buildings and condos I saw listed.
I saw that he was President of the Indian Cultural Society at the University of Missouri, Maryland chapter. More residences listed in and around the nation's capitol. He has numerous residences in Atlanta and other Georgia towns. He has relatives listed all over the USA...some in New Jersey.
At one point, his identity seems to shift to being 61 years old when he lived in New Jersey. Could there be several people using this ID?
He wrote Steve Forbes' blog on a Flat Tax, and claims he would support it if the Flat Tax were zero. He seemed to think zero taxes are the way to go. This is how I obtained his email address.
Now, are his residences non-profit, his cell phhones all non-profit, and his shelter non-existent? Maybe his vehicles and orther apparaysd are all considered non-profit as weel, since they can be claimed under some non-existent domestic violence shelter.
His email is " Sriram Gopalan"
sriramgopalan@gmail.comThe gal who called me said they hope to have an Islamic Shelter next year. I can only imagine how big that building will be and for what it will actually be used.

Kofi Annan

It's very disgusting but there is VERY DANMED LITTLE oversight by local, state and federal authorities on the legitimacy of charities.
If a person sets up a "charity" it's mere paperwork. If just 1% of the money donated goes to the cause claimed to be supported it's LEGAL.
As long as the charity itself does not donate to political causes or to certain individuals it can retain its tax-exempt status.
However, it pisses me off that black churches in the USA can have Democrats speak in their "churches" and still retain tax-exempt status. But let a Catholic, Orthodox, or Jewish clergyman speak out on how to vote (especially against a Democrat), then the IRS will be knocking on that clergyman's door....guaranteed.

Atlas - this is HUGE!
You and Julie have done some very nifty undercover work.
Looks like you've exposed a false charity that has been collecting funds that is probably being used to fund a radical Islam organization if not an outright terror organization like Hezballah or Hamas.
Way to go!! (Julie, you are awesome!)

Pam and Julie, waaaaay to go. Hopefully, you can in fact turn this over to the FBI and they can shut it down and ever better, prosecute this lying thieves. Who knows, maybe even deport those that are not in fact U.S. citizens back to whatever sandbox it was they crawled out of...
Awesome work ladies. Just awesome.

When one enters the world of charitable organizations it can get mighty confusing, especially for a novice. But there are regulations and there is oversight. It is a problem for the state to regulate and oversee, however, if they don't have the paperwork to know it has to be done. Essentially, no matter how low or high profile the organization is, if it isn't registered, then it can fall through the crack.
Note, however, if it isn't registered it may be violating the law. I say may, because I can't be sure some tax-exempt organizations are required to register. In my brief browsing, I can't nail down the extent that a religious organization has to do anything more than incorporate, or at the very least file for its tax-exempt status, ether at state or federal level.
Okay with that qualifier out of the way, I did look up the Islamic Society of North America at Guidestar. While Guidestar shows it registered in several states, it does not in California. That may be gap in their database. But it also does not show up in the Cal Attny Gen. website charities search either. Could be a database error (or an input error on my part, but I tried several variations in the input.)
Neither does the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused -- at either site -- but you describe it NISA as an organization of the parent ISNA, and I do not know what the actual legal arrangement is, if there is one and it isn't just a ISNA program descriptively inflated to sound more important. I think that a 990 filing might give more info but I can't be sure.
It seems to me that there is alot more to discover here with some more digging, though it would easier for someone in California and I'm not there.
I'd be happy to supply you with the websites I perused, including the charities search sites, the Cal Code on Charities registration and the Cal Attny Gen Guide for Charities if you want them.
Good job and happy hunting.

In doing research on the Islamic Pillar of Zagat for, I came across an Islamic charity that just didn't seem quite right. I am now in the midst of trying to verify its legitimacy. Their only testimonial is, you guessed it, ISNA. There are several other things that don't pass the sniff test. Maybe I'll have more info to pass on next week. Thank you for the encouragement you've given me to pursue this thing as I was about to give up.

Here it is exactly 15 months later, and for other reasons I, Julie, am still searching/investigating Islamic organizations. I must say that they are stunningly prolific in name, monikers, and they are expert at hiding their activities, and "events." Obama is supported by a bunch of them who do voter registrations, demosntrations, such as are coming up April 11, 2008 (an odd date since it reminds me of Spain's trains.)
Some websites have nothing but a few Koranic suras to offer, and a prominent donate button. What a great way to get 500 emails that no one is watching!
The common thread I have found in these Muslim "charities" (as they all are tax-exempt, every single last one) is that the ones offering "events" or "activities" offer no infomration on events or activities, just information on other Muslim websites, so as to rank higher with Google, etc.
They all link to each other as an MO pattern; they all seem to list, or link to prayer gatherings in their areas, (major list at IslamicFinder, org, and Islamicity.com) and the MO is to use arabic and computer classes for recruiting potential converts.
I checked into my local "mosque's" computer classes, and they were shockingly expensive. Anyone stupid enough to pay for those "classes" would most likely be stupid enough to accept Islam.
My impression, after working on this for over a year now, is that a very few people are behind these organizations.....and they have perhaps one person in one small local area whom they use for a "contact representative."
I doubt if this "contact rep" ever has to see a dollar; most likely the money flows through the channels and emails that accompany the websites, from whence we can only guess...and to whom we can only guess....the front man is most likely not the one aware of what he is being used to cover up. He may or may not genuinely think he is doing a service for allah, the moon-god.
The FBI immediately got interested in the story, and followed through, but I see it's sham is still up and running fifteen months later. Sorta like our government programs, actually.
