As many as 14 people were injured this afternoon by a motorist who drove around San Francisco deliberately running them down before being arrested by police, who believe the same driver struck and killed a man earlier today in Fremont.
One person was killed and 13 injured Tuesday afternoon by a driver who raced around San Francisco allegedly trying to run down pedestrians, police said. The driver, identified as Omeed Aziz Popal, 29, was arrested on suspicion of committing at least four hit-and-run attacks, but there was no immediate indication as to his motive.
Police said that Popal was probably the culprit of another fatal hit-and-run Tuesday morning in Fremont, California, just east of San Francisco.Seven of the injured were in critical condition, police and firefighters said.
-- Two people, one of them a child, were seriously injured on the 3500 block of California Street in Laurel Heights.
-- Two people were seriously hurt at Bush and Pierce streets.
-- One person was seriously injured at Bush and Buchanan streets.
-- One person suffered minor injuries in an incident at 1850 Fillmore St.
-- Two other people suffered minor injuries when they were hit at Pine at Divisadero streets.
-- Two people were hit and suffered minor injuries at Divisadero and Bush streets.
"It was like 'Death Race 2000,'" firefighter Danny Bright told the San Francisco Chronicle. "Guys were walking down the sidewalk and the guy just came up and ran them over. The guy went crazy."
"It's one of the craziest things I've seen in my years on the force," said San Francisco police Sergeant Neville Gittens. "This individual was driving around the city mowing people down."
"The hits were intentional,'' he said, noting that police are treating them as assaults.
The mayhem left a trail of debris on sidewalks and streets. White sheets covered a bloodstained patch of concrete. A broken pair of eyeglasses lay in the middle of the road. And a lone running shoe sat on the asphalt cordoned off by yellow tape. More here

A day of hit-and-run horror that started with the death of a Fremont pedestrian and culminated in a half-hour of chaos on the streets of San Francisco ended in the arrest of a 29-year-old driver described by some relatives as mentally disturbed, but by police as apparently rational and unrepentant.

Please check out the area (some of the earlier reports give the streets where the victims were hit) and if you follow the street plan, it passes in an extremely rough 'circle' around what I believe is called Temple Sherith Israel. It's an immense building, can't miss it. Huge dome - I'm certain it's the largest synagogue in San Francisco.

I would add to your posting where you talk about if a white person went on a rampage in an all black neighborhood and ended up killing some Mexicans, Asians, and Jews in the process AND THEN IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS A WHITE SUPREMACIST OR KKK MEMBER, who in the media would have said, "yeah, he drove through the black neighborhood and he's an avowed white racist, but he didn't only kill black people so there's no pattern for the victims and this definitely is not a race-based incident." Who would say that? Wouldn't the headline read:White Supremacist Runs Down 13 in Black Neighborhood?

-The driver struck pedestrians at full speed in a dozen locations.
-The final location, with 2 victims, was a Jewish Community Center.
-Intercepted Jihad documents have stated the intent to kill US pedestrians with SUVs.
-The man had recently been in Afghanistan.
-Consistent with previous jihadi attacks, the driver was reportedly calm with an angry look during the attacks, made eye contact with his victims and was unruffled afterwards.
-The man's close relatives, knowledgeable of the intimate details of his life (including his dreams), are involved with promoting books on Islam (Hamid Nekrawesh), contributing money to the anti-war Bush- hating radical Lyndon Larouche (Hamid Nekrawesh) and selling fraudulent securities as part of Pakistani earthquake "charity work" (Zarghona Ramish). Pakistani earthquake relief was also a source of funds for the UK airplane terror plotters.
