You haven't undermined your respectability in the least. The funny parts of the vlog were welcome comic relief at a tense time, and the serious points you make are right on target. And there's a serious point even behind the "don't you wish your girlfriend were hot like me" part, which is that part of what Islamists are fighting for is a culture that oppresses women. That's not the least reason why they must be defeated.

I think the vlog was _intended_ to be silly, in part, so I feel funny posting yet another comment defending it, but defend it I will:

A little vanity's okay & so is taunting religious fanatics.

Soldiers need to be allowed to cuss, and Atlas should be allowed to depart--though personally I think her departure was pretty minor--from the strictest standards of ladylikeness. I won't say anything as grandiose as "that vlog was indispensible to the war effort." No. But I did think it was funny. Plus there were some good serious parts.

The whole point is that Atlas isn't a buttoned-down Church Lady moralizing down at the rest of us with views that can only be espoused by teetotalers. She lives a real life (and, with that fish tank, a real nice one), one that fundamentalist preachers may not want her to.

The DailyKossack types also dance, sing and drink once in a while, but, when faced with deciding between a country (i.e., Israel) that has laws protecting women, free speech, gays (that's right, gays serve in Israel's military - no don't ask don't tell rule there), and the right to dance in public or drink in one's home, these "liberals" decide to side firmly with the fundamentalist, misogynist Islamic nations who have laws on their books (like Iran) calling for the murder of gays and who culturally require women to wear burkas and wink at or presribe "honor killing" (i.e., the murder of one's sister because she glanced at a man or, as Atlas did, danced in public). Israel is a liberal state (in the old sense of the word) surrounded by rigid fundamentalist regimes.

Liberalism, before being co-opted by "Liberals" meant that you engaged in ideas supported by facts, not that you hide from reality by adopting "evenhandedness", p.c. mono-thought and pacifism as a mantra. These people fight against Lieberman tooth and nail because he is a "fundamentalist" who dares to have warning labels put on violent games or support national security or say that the President of the United States shouldn't be abusing women in the Oval Office; but when the real fundamentalists engage in real violence against a Liberal state, then they must side with the "underdog", even though that underdog is evil and part of a billion-strong ethnic/religious fundamentalist alliance which vows to destroy all members of a small, postage-stamp sized nation who happen to be Jews.

I must say - don't the DailyKossacks know that the Defense Minister of Israel is not only an Arab Jew (born in Morrocco) but practically a Communist? Yet, he is directing the war in Lebanon to wipe out the fundamentalist mental-cases. He's a unionist super-liberal, but he gets it, why don't they?

So, keep dancing and singing Pamela because you are showing them that freedom means having fun and not being under the shackles of a backwards patriarchical theocracy. Larry: What's really sad it more people are commenting on how "lady-like" atlas is or is not, than on any other of the subjects that she writes about. I confess that Arab-Israeli relations is not an issue that is usually a hot topic at my dinner table, but at least I'm trying to take this blog as it's meant.
