NY Times Outta Control

Are they fookin nuts? Who do these people think they are? They are beneath contempt. How dare they print the summer homes of Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld?

"The New York Times points cranks, radicals, al-Qaida operatives and would-be assassins to the summer homes of [V.P. Dick] Cheney and [Defense Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld" writes FrontPage Magazine's David Horowitz, who sees the June 30 Times feature article as an apparent retaliation for administration "criticism of the Times' disclosure of classified intelligence to America's enemies."

In the "Escapes" section of the June 30 edition, the N.Y. Times printed huge color photos of the vacation residences of Cheney and Rumsfeld, "identifying the small Maryland town where they live, showing their front driveways and, in Rumsfeld's case, actually pointing out the hidden security camera in case any hostile intruders should get careless," Horowitz writes.

Times Travel section writer Peter Kilborn even makes sure enemies of the two men will know such details as where Mrs. Rumsfeld shops in the eastern shore town of St. Michaels, Md. where the two administration officials have weekend retreats.

He even lets the curious know what street the Cheneys and Rumsfelds have to use to get to their own road. Newsmax here.

Less than two miles from the Rumsfelds', past Southwind, where the late James A. Michener wrote much of his epic novel "Chesapeake," Church Neck Road dead-ends at private Fuller Road on the left. About a quarter-mile up, past grazing cattle and sheep and four other homes, is Vice President Cheney's nine-acre place, Ballintober.

High Powered St. Michaels has become a weekend-home haven for some influential Washingtonians; even Joyce Rumsfeld shops at Big Al's Market.

UPDATE: A number of readers have advised me that Rumsfeld gave his permission for the photos to be used. I am sure he was thrilled. IMAO, I think it stinks.

UPDATE: This operaton into Gaza is the most humanitarian in human history. Think about it. Think about the extaordinary effort the Israelis are making to avoid casualties. Oh and they are dropping leaflets too.

 

 

Here's the link to one of the outrages I refer to in this blog. U.S. to pay $48 million to cover damages to Gaza power station - Haaretz - Israel News. The Israelis built that station. The Israelis gave that station to the Palestinians.  They ought to learn to start to build something. Spend their time creating something for the community so there is less time for digging under ground like rats to snatch Jewish soldiers.

I thought of all those young soldiers in the hot sun and dust of Gaza.

But the French media are only thinking of Palestinian hardship.  The only difference between present coverage and the worst of the years 2000-3 is that the novelty has worn off.  Every Israel-bashing distortion has been trotted out, but the obsession is muted by a lazy summertime-and-the-living-is-easy tone.  As I remarked the other day, Gilad Shalit has lost his hyphen, he’s not French-Israeli, he’s a simple, I’d say a lowdown Israeli soldier, no different from his buddies who blew up the Gaza power station, the ones who bop in and out of Ramallah as if it were their mamma’s kitchen, the ones who are the cause of Palestinian bitterness, the ones whose fault it is that Résistants kidnap soldiers and kill colons.  OK, maybe there was a thin trickle of sympathy on Monday for those baby-face boys, but it’s gone now.  The helmets are covering the kepelech and masking the innocent faces, we’re back to the stereotypes, the big bad Israeli army.  And now they’ve capture political figures!  What nerve!  According to Le Figaro the whole world is against these Israeli methods (no mention of George W. Bush who approves).  Maybe Fatah and Hamas can’t get their act together, but the French media are, as usual, unanimous.

The Résistants who captured the colon (in Jerusalem…but of course they knew he was a colon, it was written all over his face) threatened to kill him unless the Israelis stopped their military operation.  So when it turns out he was already dead before the operation began, how do the French media explain that one?  Easy.  They just don’t mention that insignificant detail.  In an article on the Summer Rain operation, Gilles Paris of Le Monde managed to serve up the Gaza Beach libel as if it were the hottest mystery after the virgin birth.  Did you know?  Seven people were killed on a Gaza beach and Israelis and Palestinians still disagree on who dunnit. 

The French media are clucking about the stunning Hamas about-face; the democratically elected Palestinian government has implicitly recognized the existence of __________ by signing this really neat document, the best peace plan yet! But those stubborn Israelis chose to invade Gaza instead of waiting for diplomacy to find the missing soldier.  Like they found the missing colon? 

The best media trick came from France 2, the home of Charles Enderlin of al-Dura fame.  Charles could barely contain his joy in reporting on the intransigence of the Israeli Army he so loves to hate.  And someone topped it off with the best mistranslation of the decade: Israeli leaflets dropped on Beit Hanun--famous for its Qassam launch sites--advised residents to stay in their homes because the village was going to be bombarded.  When your corner NGO announces the massacre, it will be no surprise to French viewers!

The other day my thoughts were with Israeli soldiers toiling in the dust and the heat, copped up in tanks and airplanes, desperately searching for one precious kidnapped soldier, called up once more to defend their country, while here in the Parisian Diaspora we celebrate the 2nd annual festival of Jewish cultures.  Israeli boys are in the tanks, and we are sitting in the courtyard of the 3rd arrondissement City Hall.   If I remember correctly, last year’s festival covered yiddishkeit.  The theme this year is “Sephardic Mosaic.”  A beautiful spacious Arab tent at one end of the courtyard invites visitors to stretch out on silken couches or perch on damask poufs placed around large copper-tray tables.  Mint tea and Oriental pastries are served.  An Oriental dancer performs at the opposite end of the courtyard.  The street in front of the city hall is blocked, decorated with palm trees and mountain laurel, and set out with comfortable deck chairs. It was all so convivial.  What is there to not like?  Should we cover our festival with black mourning drapes because 18 year-old Eliyahu Asheri z”l was shot in the head?  And Corporal Gilad Shalit is in the hands of bloodthirsty jihadis?  Isn’t this month-long festival proof of good relations between France and the Jews?  Which would you rather for your sons, a tank in Gaza or a pouf in the courtyard?

I’ll never forget Keith Richburg’s Washington Post article on the November uprising.  He claimed that if you were sitting in a trendy bistrot in the Marais you wouldn’t know those banlieue populations even existed.  I loved Richburg’s Out of America, but when it comes to the oppressed masses of Paris, he can’t see further than the tip of his eyelashes.  All the deck chairs in front of the 3rd arrdt. city hall (at the northern tip of the Marais, two steps away from the last trendy bistrot) were occupied by third generation third world kids who couldn’t care less about Jewish cultures, even when they are dressed in Arab trappings.  The bigger boys played impudent soccer at one end of the closed street.  Later in the day the teens were replaced by Muslim mommas with babies and toddlers.

And I couldn’t help thinking that no amount of dhimmitude would save us even one seat in the brave new world in the making. 

PS: today’s press is a chorus of wagging fingers.  Once again, Israel has gone too far!  One kidnapped soldier can’t justify all this frightful destruction.  The democratically elected Hamas government deserves respect, and the people who democratically elected the government should in no way be held responsible for the kidnapping of a soldier and a colon.  I guess these journalists still haven’t got the message.  Their Swedish colleague was shot point blank in Mogadishu, and they still think they are the good guys of the bad guys, safe from harm up there on their high horses, spitting down on Israeli heads.

Egypt To Israel No Real Peace with Arabs

Egypt has warned Israel not to take peace for granted.

So there you have peace - with an Arab nation. America has juiced them with aid and armaments and planes -we have supplied them with roughly 150+ F-16's, apaches and M-1's. In fact Eygpt has just about the same number of US built warplanes as does Israel. And this is the end result. The House of Representatives has just defeated a proposal to reduce by $100 million aid for Egypt. The US has provided Egypt with $1.3 billion a year in military aid since 1979, and an average of $815 million a year in economic assistance. All told, Egypt has received over $50 billion in US largesse since 1975.  Al-jizz reported the United States has freed 300 million dollars in aid to Egypt earlier this month. Thats alot of jyzya.

Egypt is the third largest recipient of US foreign aid, which aid it receives as a direct result of its having signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. Under that treaty, Israel gave Egypt every last grain of sand in the Sinai which Israel had captured from the Egyptians twice, once in 1956 and once again in 1967.

Today, the head of the Egyptian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Mustafa al-Fekki, a senior member of President Hosni Mubarak's ruling party, said Israel should not think the "peace reached with an Arab country can be guaranteed while it continues to perpetrate its 'crimes and aggressions'."

Islamic fundamentalists with their many names - Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Islamic Republic of Iran - are again all focused on uniting the ummah of Islam around the liberation of Palestine. It is no coincidence that the commander of Hamas' military wing, Khaled Mashaal, lives under the protection and sponsorship of the Assad regime in Damascus. Nor is it a coincidence that Hamas was born, established, and intellectually weaponized by Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood movement.

Noah, the ArK!

Apparently they think they found Noah's Ark in Iran. A team of Texas arecheologists made the discover in the Ararat mountains. Maybe Al Gore will feel better now, he can replicate it and start building one, today! Where to find the gopher wood?

A team of Texas archaeologists believe they may have located the remains of Noah's Ark in Iran's Elburz mountain range.

What the team found jutting out of the mountain was about the size of a small aircraft carrier, similar to the Ark's dimensions as described in the Bible.

The Bible places the Ark in the mountains of Ararat, a mountain range theologians believe spans hundreds of miles, which the team says is consistent with their find in Iran.The Bible also describes the Ark's dimensions as being 300 cubits by 50 cubits -- about the size of a small aircraft carrier. The B.A.S.E. Institute's discovery is similar in size and scale.

"It is provocative to think that this could be the lost ark of Noah," Cornuke said

Oil For Food's Bulging Bags of Smuggled Cash

The testimon[e]y at this week's trial of Tongsun Park, indicted for acting as an unregistered agent for a foreign government, in the oil for food scandal is nothing short of riveting. You would think with all we've heard from Claudia Rosett's Pulitzer deserving expose(s)  of the largest scandal in human history, that nothing would shock us. You'd be wrong. The details were so stunning even John Gott Jr. was pricking up his ears in the prison cafeteria to hear the salacious details of courtroom testimony.

It was no wonder Saddam was confident no harm would come to him. He had the UN in his back pocket (the pocket with the wallet in it.) The following is in today's New York Sun. None of the dinosaur media goes near oil for food story  -- the UN is their sacred mad cow no matter how decadent and bespolied.

“I guess we have to take care of B.B.”

A Korean businessman,Tongsun Park, hinted that he needed $10 million from Saddam Hussein so he could “take care” of Secretary-General Boutros-Ghali, a court heard yesterday. Mr. Boutros-Ghali told Mr. Park he wanted to “neutralize” a top U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq and that he was relying on his “Iraqi friends” to aid his mid-1990s bid for reelection, according to testimony.

During their meeting, Mr. Park “asked for $10 million to take care of expenses and to take care of some people,” Mr.Vincent told the court. He assumed “some people” meant Mr. Boutros-Ghali, he said.

Mr. Vincent told the jury that Hamdoon, who died in 2003, said, “I guess we have to take care of B.B.” He said the initials were understood to be a reference to Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Mr. Boutros-Ghali wanted to impress Saddam’s top aide, Tariq Aziz, and the Turtle Bay leader told Mr. Park he was a friend of the regime, Mr.Vincent said.

According to Mr.Vincent’s notes, Mr. Boutros-Ghali said he always suspected the chief U.N. weapons inspector, Rolf Ekeus, “had links to the United States.” Mr. Boutros-Ghali added, however, that he had not yet been able to “neutralize” the Swedish inspector.

Mr. Vincent testified Wednesday that in an earlier stage of his and Mr. Park’s dealings with the secretary-general, Mr. Boutros-Ghali said Iraq must not be overly concerned about U.N.weapons inspectors, suggesting that the regime should “put 600 mukhabarat” — or secret servicemen — in place to monitor them.

Relaying Mr. Park’s demand for $10 million, Mr. Vincent told his main contact with Saddam’s regime, Hamdoon, that he had never heard of “Iraqis paying anything.” But Hamdoon saw an opportunity, he testified. [...]

“This is great,we can make some money,”Hamdoon told him,Mr.Vincent said. Instead of giving Mr. Park $10 million, Hamdoon suggested paying the Korean $5 million and procuring another $10 million for “us,”Mr.Vincent testified. Mr. Aziz later approved the idea, he said.

Mr. Rashid capped the Baghdad session by bringing into the room $450,000 in $10,000 bundles of $100 bills, wrapped in paper carrying the logo of the Bank of Iraq.

Mr. Vincent stuffed the cash into his “bulging” brief case, he said, and asked for a government note to help him cross the border to Jordan.

Cash payments of $1 million and $1.55 million later were delivered to the Iraqi mission to the United Nations in sealed diplomatic pouches, Mr. Vincent said.

Holding Islam Accountable

Making the case for IRAQ, coming from a prominent Muslim.

I've long admired Efraim Karsh. Truth teller, fighter, academic - here he reviews Fouad Ajami, a professor of Middle East studies at Johns Hopkins University, who "has never shied away from speaking his mind, even if it meant digressing from the received wisdom. He did so for the first time some 25 years ago in "The Arab Predicament," a scathing indictment of pan-Arabism, and has been challenging the cliches of Middle East scholarship ever since."

As is vividly illustrated by the book's title,Mr. Ajami makes no bones as to where his sympathies lie. By deposing a bloodthirsty tyrant and enabling his brutalized subjects to put him on trial, he argues, the United States has established, for the first time in modern Arab history, "the precedent of holding a ruler responsible for the follies and crimes of his regime," without which there can be no civil society. This, together with the liberation of Iraq's long-oppressed Shiite and Kurdish communities to play their overdue roles in their country's future, has sown the seeds of Iraq's potential transition, if not that of the wider Middle East, to a freer and more and accountable political system.

It's an extraordinary article and a must read

In the words of Nuri Said, a longtime prime minister of Iraq and prominent early champion of this doctrine: "Although Arabs are naturally attached to their native land, their nationalism is not confined by boundaries. It is an aspiration to restore the great tolerant civilization of the early caliphate."

 If, today, America is reviled in the Arab and Muslim worlds, it is not because of "the culture of terrorism that had put down roots in the Arab world," let alone its specific policies, but because, as the pre-eminent world power, it blocks the final realization of this same age-old dream of regaining "the great tolerant civilization of the early caliphate." That this is not a vision confined to a tiny extremist fringe was evidenced by the overwhelming support for the September 11 attacks throughout the Islamic world, well beyond the confines of the Middle East, in the admiring evocations of Mr. bin Laden's murderous acts during the crisis over the Danish cartoons, and in the significant reservoirs of sympathy, shown in recent polls, among Muslims in Britain for the "feelings and motives" of the suicide bombers who attacked London last July.

In the historical imagination of many Muslims and Arabs, Mr. bin Laden represents nothing short of the new incarnation of Saladin, defeater of the Crusaders and conqueror of Jerusalem. In this sense, the house of Islam's war for world mastery is a traditional, indeed venerable, quest that is far from over. To the contrary, now that this war has met with a determined counterattack by the United States and others, and with a Western intervention in the heart of the House of Islam, it remains to be seen whether this "noble" endeavor, to use Mr. Ajami's words, "would prove to be a noble success or a noble failure."

Mr. Karsh is head of Mediterranean Studies at King's College, University of London, and author most recently of "Islamic Imperialism: A History," available from Yale University Press.

Since Israellycool linked here from his Operation Summer Rains liveblog, hundreds have read this posting. I have updated it with many more examples of Palestinian Arab female terrorists who are now in Israeli prisons. I did not list the women who were killed killing Jews or attempting to kill Jews.
Ahlam Tamimi, who drove the suicide bomber to the Sbarro's restaurant attack killing 15, including 11 children.

Amana Muna, who lured a 16-year old Israeli boy over the Internet to Ramallah where he was ambushed and killed.

Yusra Abdu, convicted of planning a suicide attack.

Wafa al-Bis, who tried to blow up the Israeli hospital that was treating her.

The BBC Newsblog, an offshoot of the BBC News website is running a self-righteous piece of self-justification by its World News editor Jon Williams, of its current selective vocabulary in reporting the stand-off between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and government over the kidnapping of Cpl Gilad Shalit:

As ever in reporting the Middle East, language - and the choice of words - is incredibly important. Was the soldier kidnapped or captured, were the Hamas politicians arrested or detained?

Our credibility is undermined by the careless use of words which carry value judgements. Our job is to remain objective. By doing so, I hope we allow our audiences on radio and television to make their own assessment of the story. So we try to stick to the facts - civilians are "kidnapped", Cpl Shalit was "captured"; since troops don't usually make "arrests", the politicians were "detained". Doubtless some will disagree. But that's, in essence, the heart of the story - two competing narratives.

Yes, but some smart commenters have spotted the glaring discrepancies in the BBC's practice...

Hirsi Ali Brings Down da Hous

When truth walks in the room, everybody stand up. In this case they all fell down. Ayaan Hirsi Ali stands alone. And Verdonk resigns. Verdonk verbonked.

Hirsi Ali dispute brings down Dutch government

A dispute over the citizenship of Somali-born Ayaan Hirsi Ali brought down the Dutch government yesterday when D66, the junior member of the centre-right coalition, walked out after demanding the resignation of Rita Verdonk, the hard-line immigration minister.

Jan Peter Balkenende, prime minister, told parliament he would go to Queen Beatrix today to begin the process of consultations that could lead either to his Christian democrat alliance continuing to govern as a minority coalition with Mrs Verdonk's liberal VVD, or to a snap general election.

Six weeks ago Mrs Verdonk threatened to strip Ms Hirsi Ali of her citizenship because she gave a false name and age when she applied for asylum in the Netherlands in 1992. That meant her naturalisation five years later was unlawful, Mrs Verdonk said.

Ms Hirsi Ali resigned her seat with the VVD and brought forward the date of a planned departure to the US, where she has been offered a job with the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think-tank.

The affair caused international outrage. The Dutch were branded intolerant and the government was accused of expelling Ms Hirsi Ali.

Bad enough she had lost her home because her neighbors were afraid to live near her. It seems they were afraid of Muslims. She  also resigned her position, was damn near forced to leave the country.

And if truth be told if the West is going to have any reconciliation with the West it will be with the inestimable contributions of Hirsi Ali, Wafa Sultan, and other courageous truth tellers that speak out at great personal risk.

Palestinian Terror Children

They say that a picture is worth 1000 words. We believe that the following photographs demonstrates vividly the moral issues facing Israeli troops when confronting armed Palestinian gunmen taking refuge among children and civilians. When taking into consideration this terrorist tactic -- operating from within civilian population -- one can only appreciate the relatively low Palestinian civilian casualty rate caused by IDF soldiers.

Iran Refuses July 5th Deadline

Why the delay (I know why)? They have had the "very generous package" since the first week June. This is an obvious stall. How much time do they need until these mad mullahs are all nuked up with no place to go?

Iran's foreign minister on Thursday brushed aside demands from the major industrialized nations to respond by July 5 to an international offer for Tehran to roll back its uranium enrichment program, saying his nation would need until August.
The ministers from the United States, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada said they expected to hear "a clear and substantive Iranian response to these proposals" at a meeting on July 5 between Solana and Iran's chief negotiator Ali Larijani.

Mottaki, asked about the Group of Eight request for a response by July 5, noted that when Solana presented the package to the Iranians in Tehran "we did not agree on any specific date to respond."

"The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the proposed package ... is clear and will be substantive but ... the proposed package contains questions and ambiguities which must be clear," he said. [ishcabibble, ishcabobble - Atlas]

There is nothing casual about Ms. Farooq’s interpretation of Islam. She reiterates the belief that jihad is the “sixth pillar” of the religion, and her on-line postings are decidedly interested in the violent kind. In the forum titled “Terrorism and killing civilians,” she writes a detailed point-by-point explanation of why the Taliban is destined to emerge victorious in Afghanistan.

Protest the New York Times Revealing of U.S. Secrets, Monday, July 10, 5 p.m.

The exact place is still to be decided, but it will almost certainly be in the Times Square area. The groups on board so far are Free Republic, Caucus for America, and the Congress for Racial Equality. High-visibility media people are interested in speaking at the protest. Murdered teen's mom, Miriam: "The pain is almost too great to bear."

Thousands of people attended the funeral of Eliyahu Asheri in Jerusalem. The 18 year old was murdered after being kidnapped by Palestinians on Sunday.

Eliyahu's mother, Miriam, eulogized: "Eliyahu, our darling, you went up in a storm of the night like Elijah the prophet," she continued.

Miriam fondly recounted how the family would sit around the Shabbat table and how Eliyahu taught them, time and time again, not to judge people, "not by outward appearances nor by stigmas."

PALESTINIAN TROOPS ARE NOT MILITANTS

News reports from the biased Reuters and AP (their stringers are, after all, Palestinians) continue to refer to the acts of war perpetrated by Palestinian troops in Gaza as militants.  This is fallacious.  Gaza is now in the hands of the Palestinians. There is no occupying force.  It is their land, they elected their own government (terrorists albeit, but their choice) - these are Palestinian troops and they are committing acts of war against a sovereign nation.

Israeli defense officials estimate militants have smuggled in hundreds of shoulder-fired anti-tank missiles, thousands of assault rifles, and tons of high explosive since Israel's Gaza "disengagement" in September 2005. Maj. Matan Gorodish told Reuters militants had only a few dozen anti-tank missiles before Israel's withdrawal. "Now they have hundreds of them," he said.
    According to Israel's internal security service, militants have brought into Gaza at least 3 million bullets, nearly 20,000 assault rifles, 430 rocket-propelled grenades, and several shoulder-fired [anti-aircraft] rocket launchers. A Western security source called these numbers "underestimates."
