Fourth night of Muslim riots in Paris (hat tip LGF)
A Paris suburb suffering fourth of arson, rioting and arrests sparked by the accidentAL electrocution deaths of two teenagers fleeing police. The boys Ziad, aged 17, and Banou, 15, died on Thursday when they scaled a wall of an electrical relay station while running away from police and fell against a transformer.
Sixteen people were injured in violence on Friday and hundreds of residents marched on Saturday to appeal for calm and pay their respects to the dead teenagers.
On Monday, he told police officers they had the support of the French people and promised to provide extra manpower.
"For 30 years the situation has been getting worse in a number of neighborhoods. It's not a story that's three days, three weeks or three months old," Sarkozy said.
Sarkozy, whose law and order policies have been criticized by human rights groups, made his name by cutting crime figures during his first stint as interior minister from 2002 to 2004.
