SVETLOGORSK, July 3 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia will support Germany's candidature for permanent membership in the UN Security Council, President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday.
The reform of the United Nations, including the UN Security Council, was a strategic item of the Sunday meeting,” Putin said. He said Russia, Germany and France have similar opinions about the UN reform. “The reform must increase the efficiency and authority of the universal organization, build up its unity and enhance the potential of response to new threats and challenges,” Putin said.
“Various suggestions are being made about the UN Security Council reform, and Russia will agree with any reasonable variant, which gains the majority of votes,” Putin said. “It is very important for us to prevent the reform debates from splitting the organization, provoking conflicts and misunderstanding, and turning the UN Security Council into a debate club unable to solve important contemporary problems.”
